Jerry Garcia : Best Interviews on Video (LoloYodel)

  • As many of you know, Jerry Garcia was incredibly witty and very articulate ! Thus, always a delight to listen to him.
This is what I've found to be the best (or better), witty, funny, insightful, personal exchanges, chats, interviews of Jerry Garcia on video.
Why this re-mix ? Because 1) finding each individual interview is occasionally time consuming or frustrating and 2) some of those are simply too long.
Obviously, I have heavily edited out segments and this is organized (essentially) in a simple chronological order. Lastly, I have made many color and audio-level corrections.

First concert I went to was GD at Capitol Center in DC March 91. I had heard their music, but couldn't GET IT until having gone to the show. It changed my life forever. So glad I did. THANK YOU to the band. It's too bad they couldn't have gone on forever as I truly believe they changed every person they played for For the Better. Miss them terribly.

If there was a way to gauge how much people love a performer, I'd say Jerry Garcia would register higher than anyone else. He was not only a phenomenal singer/guitarist, but was extremely witty, intelligent, self-deprecating and had truck loads of charisma. And it all just came so naturally to him. He could prompt thousands to dance with a frenzy one minute, and you could hear a pin drop a minute later.

All we can say to those who do not understand our Draw to this beautiful music, the draw to the give and take of the sacramental SHOWS, the need to continue onward even after Garcia's death, The JRAD's. The DSO's, The Wingmen, WSP, and all the others who know the pleasing chords that rock our souls??? All we can say is: It's allright, It's allright...

Working for the Grateful Dead was literally a “Dream Come True!”
And being able to have several conversations with Jerry were amazing. The most difficult thing for me was separating the man from the Idol…
It took some time, but I finally got to know him on a real level.
The reason for my interview with him was that during his “Break” while recovering from his Diabetic Coma Bill Graham Presents help a few “Night Of The Living Deadheads” get together parties at Wolfgangs in San Francisco that featured live bands, auctions benefiting The Rex Foundation and mini Shakedown Streets.
During the short 15 minute interviews were shown with Phil Lesh and then Bob Weir.
David Gans and I did the interview with Bob Weir at his house on Mt. Tamalpais with his dog, Otis.
David Gans did the interview and I ran the video camera.
When it came to possibly interview Jerry, I approached him at the Grateful Dead Productions office then located at 1016 Lincoln Avenue in San Rafael. I told him about the other interviews and told him that David would do the interview and I would run the camera. Jerry said, “ Why don’t you do the interview and David run the camera.”
So we set up the 15 minute interview for across the street at 1104 Lincoln upstairs from Jerry’s business office in what was then the Grateful Dead Ticket Sales (GDTS) office in front of our Wall of Envelopes.
I went to a lot of my Deadhead friends and asked them if they could ask Jerry one question what would it be.
I showed up with about five pages of questions for a 15 minute interview. I handed Jerry the questions and asked him to cross off the ones he didn’t want to answer and he immediately handed back the list and said, “I do t work that way. If I don’t like a question you’ll know.”
David lit up a joint. We smoked and started the interview…

Someone wrote that one of the most beautiful things about Jerry was his ability to allow people to be comfortable being exactly who they were. What a beautiful mind. As Kesey said, he was a shaman. Never was and will never be anyone quite like him.

There was an alternate west coast hot line number someone gave me, and it turned out to be a direct line to the Dead's office. I called it a couple times, and rapped with Steve Marcus. That was a treat to speak to someone within the organization.

I dated a girl for 5 years in San Francisco. Her father was the drummer in a short lived but huge band. Everyone reading this knows who itt is. Anyway, he, and the my ex's mother knew the dead circle well. Her mother dated mickey for a short while and helped build mickey's studio in the early 70s. There were also other musicians I met from that era who knew or had worked w jerry, as well as non musicians... What I'm getting at is this...every single person said jerry was BY FAR the nicest guy in the band. Obviously the most talented. I saw my first dead show in 85 at age 17. His influence on me, and I went on to perform and teach music for 25 years and made a living, was cataclysmic. The dead and Espec jerry were like an encyclopedia of knowledge for a young musician. Garcia is the mark twain of the 20th century.

"I would like to be thought as a competent musician, that would be good, I'd like that..."
You were that indeed and SO much more to so many people. The Grateful Dead as a whole through the years has shaped many of our lives, it was an honor to be a part of it...Even if I was just "one in ten thousand" who had come for the show.

My first show was Boston garden and my husband said come to the show so I did and I love the show and I told my husband wow unreal cuz I have never heard him before and I was immediately hooked to the grateful Dead and that was all I wanted to listen to. We went to the Vermont show for 5 days and that show was unreal people are climbing the fence to get in and then I went off to Boston got it again with a friend that never heard of The grateful Dead music and he fell right in love with it he was like oh my god wow unreal spectacular the experience is just something you never forget.. and that is 96 we're going to see him in Boston and my husband bought tickets and then my friend called and said he was gone the great man Jerry Garcia had passed away and I still have the tickets 25 years ago they were going to play Boston garden and the tickets have cherries face stamped on the back.. I can't believe that I still have them 2 tickets and that I will hold on to and I'm sure someday maybe they may be worth something money I don't know but I have them in my possession and I look at them every once in awhile and it's just unreal that we were just getting ready to go to the shower with Boston and then we found out and the experience and the sound of Jerry's voice was remarkable and I always tell people if you never heard the Dead you if you do and if you do listen to him once you'll be hooked like I am and I always will be.. he was a remarkable singer/ guitarists.. but the music lives on and it will always.. that's what we can do is smile some smile smile and keep on truckin..

Speaking as a fellow guitar player (of 60 years experience) I can say that Jerry, just through the singular example of his being, has guided me, with great compassion and humour, to realise that, in conventional terms, I really don't have to be any good - as long as I am honest with myself and others then I am as great as anyone else who is. Ultimately all these preconceptions about 'virtuosity', 'competence' and 'skill" have to be seen for what they are - foam, bubbles, and heat shimmer. Otherwise you just get hung up on comparison, discrimination and competition. If everyone ain't a winner, then we are all losers - Bless Your Soul Gerry xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Wow man. It's amazing to see how Jerry always looked 20 years older than he actually was. The 3rd interview here in the 1980 segment with Bob Weir, he was 38 years old and could have passed for 60. What about the idea that the fools died and at the pearly gates they asked why they could not get in. The Angel said firstly you have to be dead and they replied they were dead. Then the Angel said, 'Secondly there is no smoking'. Smoking is in the other place.
