  • Since I posted my previous video about things I wish I knew about Etsy, I got a lot of requests to posts a video about shipping on Etsy/shipping costs.
    Here's a quick video to break down everything I know about Etsy shipping as well as things I do for my own shop! Enjoy :)

    Thank you for this very detailed video. I opened my store a few days ago and got my first sale so I’ve been so stressed with shipping cus the site makes it confusing lol.
    I thought I HAD to use the label Etsy gave me and I was freaking out since it costed way more than what I had put as shipping price for the item.
    I will be writing down the addresses instead and sending them thru my local post office as their shipping actually matches what I put on my store 😅

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get all my stamps from my local post office when I mail out orders. I don't have some at home. It would depend on your post office (i'm not sure about post offices outside of Canada) but here, you can buy 50-100 stamps in a roll. You can order them online through the post office's website or in person at the post office!

    Great video! I am still a little confused on how I can avoid charging customers shipping labels multiple times. They get turned away when they see such high shipping pricing, is there a setting that I can change to allow customers to just pay ONCE for shipping? I currently have calculated shipping on all my listings with item weight and dimensions of parcel box in each listing, yet I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Yes there is a way, you'd have to set up a shipping profile. You can set it so the initial cost is however much your shipping label will cost. Then for additional costs, you can choose to add or not to add extra money that they have to pay as they purchase more than one item.
      I go through how to get that set up in the second half of this video: th-cam.com/video/UHeFPt-JOwk/w-d-xo.html

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you can set multiple shipping profiles for the same listing but you can definitely vary them between multiple listings! Etsy will ask you which setting you want when you create the listing!

    I stared selling on Etsy 3 days ago a sell temporary tattoos and use the same shipping method you use I send the tattoos on envelopes and I buy stamps because it’s easy and cheap but I’ve been noticing that Etsy does not pay me the shipping so what happens with that money?? I’m buying the stamps my self plus the buyer is just giving money to Etsy for a shipping that I’m paying. I don’t understand

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hm.. does it not show in the breakdown of the order the shipping price the buyer was charged? There is a possibility that the amount you charged for shipping was around the amount Etsy takes as it's transaction fees/listing fees. This is not to say Etsy didn't pay you for the shipping price but due to their fees, they took back the same amount which is like -.-
      Does that make sense? haha I tried to explain it basically cancelling out. But then again I'm not 100% sure if this is the case : /

    This video was so helpful! Thank you! I do have a question though. When doing international shipping do you put different prices for different countries that are farther away like Australia? I'm afraid that if I put one general price that it will be too much for some places and too little for others. Thanks again for such a helpful video!

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd put an average amount to cover all places in one go. If there's one country that is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive/cheaper, then maybe make it separate. Sometimes it just takes some trials from orders to get a feel of the average cost.
      For me shipping letters from Canada, all international orders are the same price.

      aww thank you so much ^^ With polly mailers, I'm not too sure to be honest (this based off using Canada Post). You SHOULD be able to just write the address on it and mail it out with stamps, but i'm not 100% sure on that and have never tried. Sorry > < This was a reason why I switched to kraft bubble mailers because I knew those ones would be fine with stamps/not using shipping labels AS LONG AS the order is within Canada.

    Hello! I’m completely new to Etsy and the mail postage service in general sadly..does it matter which shipping services you offer when editing your listing- if you just ship envelope encases products?

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, I have gotten enough feedback to know it takes around 2-10 days for within Canada shipments and 7-14 days for USA shipments so I pick whichever shipping services matches those days the closest!
      I would suggest picking a service that shows more days than it would take than less. Once people start receiving your orders, you can kind of gauge how long it actually takes for your orders to arrive and adjust the shipping service days by that! I hope that makes sense haha

    • @DoodlesnTea

      You can still create a shipping label regardless of if you have free shipping or not. Some people increase the price of their items so that they can offer free shipping to customers (so customers are paying for the cost of shipping without it saying separately shipping cost is ____).

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! :) Yes in your example's case, you would receive the full $7 to pay for shipping! Etsy doesn't actually take the money you set for shipping (except for a few cents for their shipping fees which I honestly don't get.. but in the grand scheme of things it's not a lot). So whether you set the shipping price as $1 or $10, you will get all the money essentially. You can then take that money to pay for stamps, shipping labels, whatever you use for postage to mail out your order :) Hope that makes sense!

    so if etsy takes their 5% and 3% fees from the total transaction including the shipping cost, would it make sense for people selling cheap items to just not sell internationally or priority because the shipping costs would dip severely into their profit margins? I'm planning to set up a shop using the calculated shipping (at least to start out) but as someone selling things under 20$, I'm not sure what to do.

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I'm not sure if Etsy will let you know sell internationally (haven't dug deep enough to figure that out). I believe even with calculated shipping, you can pick which carrier to use (standard or priority) so in that case, you could use standard for a cheaper option.
      From my personal experience when I used calculated shipping, despite the higher price, people would still be willing to pay simply to support a small handmade business. Don't be too discouraged 😊

      Hi Audrey! If they buy a shipping label from you through Etsy, no you do not have to pay again at the post office. Either that or you can buy stamps to pay for postage. Essentially what's happening is when the buyer pays for shipping, they're giving you money to pay for shipping their items out at the post office. Hope that makes sense :)

      I think a regular envelope would be fine (maybe use a cellophane page to hold the bracelets inside too in case wherever it gets shipped to is raining 😅) or a bubble mailer!
      Most shops I follow who sell "not flat items" use bubble mailers but you'll have to look into shipping price. Because bubble mailers are thicker, shipping price will increase

    Hi, I was wondering when someone purchases something off of your etsy listing and you have a fixed price for shipping does the fixed costs get put into your bank account or does like etsy force you to buy one of their dumb labels. Also great video! :)

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope you don't have to buy their labels 😂 you get all the money you set for shipping, whether fixed or recommended. The money you get from it is intended to help you pay for your postage fees whether it's by stamps or labels. Do keep in mind there is a slight shipping fee regardless because Etsy is just a pain that way 😫 haha hope that helps!

    Such a helpful video! I have a couple questions, i'm planning to start an etsy shop for my stickers and was thinking of sending them in envelopes that are 7.25in x 5.25in. From what I've found online, etsy apparently does letter labels that include tracking? though my concerns with that is the size of them(i dont know what they look like/if it'll look good on a small envelope) and my main concern with shipping as a letter is that buyers wont be able to track their order, have you had any problems with that? Lastly, would you recommend taking them to the post office to be stamped or buying my own stamps? (i live in the US, but don't know much about how the postage service works...)

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm I've never heard of Etsy doing letter labels before. From my experience in the past on printing shipping labels, you can print a smaller size and a bigger size. The smaller size is around 1/3 of a sheet of standard printer paper. Larger size could be scaled up to the entire paper. Etsy should ask you what size you want to print after you buy the labels.
      I haven't had any issues with mail getting lost. Out of roughly 100 orders it's only happened once (during COVID). International orders have all arrived safely too. I think it's just important to let your buyers know a rough estimate on how long it takes to arrive (keep in mind for international orders it could be held in custom. One of mine got held up for almost 2 months...)
      Personally for me, I just buy the stamps at the post office because I have to go there anyways to mail them out haha I've only recently started buying stamps at home because I now know how many stamps I'd need for how many sticker sheets people buy on average. I'm not sure about USA though, but here in Canada, I do know buying stamps beforehand in booklets is cheaper than buying them at the post office when you mail them.
      Hope this answers your questions :)

    Part 2: will the sale on etsy say shipped or made it when they do?
    Part 3: what happens to my estimated delivery date if there is no tracking number saying they got it?

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions!
      1) Usually I write a note in the order for the buyer to tag us on socials when they get it. That way I know they got it. Usually I just assume if no one has complained about not getting it that it arrived safely haha
      2) I'm guessing you mean getting a notification from Etsy that they got their order? If that's the case, Etsy won't do that for you unfortunately.
      3) The estimated delivery date just gives the buyer an idea of when they can expect their order to arrive (especially good since you have no tracking).
      Hope that kind of helps :)

Because I know it’s American based and I was wondering how long it took for you to get paid for your first two orders. (I live in Australia for context). I changed to get paid on the 11th of August two days after I got my first two sales and I still haven’t received payment. Considering this, I don’t want to ship my products to America before getting paid otherwise I’ll be -$ so I was wondering if you’ve experienced anything like this?

    • @DoodlesnTea

      Hey! So I'm assuming you mean getting paid as in the money reaches your bank account (or whatever method you have set). In that case, usually it takes a couple days after the day you set your payment date for it to show up in your bank account. You can check how much you will receive in the finance --> payment tab.
      If you're talking about getting paid from the order itself (like it's still processing), I heard from a friend that Etsy had some issues a while back about it taking a looong time to process payments. For that, I'm not sure how to work around it besides just waiting..

So, is there a away that I can provide my own shipping labels, and then attach the tracking number to the Etsy order that I am shipping? I would like to attach the tracking # to each specific order, that way it is easier to track, and so that Etsy can see that I indeed shipped the item in question. Thank you, these videos are so great! Question for you - how do you set shipping prices using your local post office without knowing the destination of the product? Do you set it as an average cost? Is the shipping price something you add in after a sale? For example, if I wanted to use my postal rate and set my own rates instead of the recommended profile, but I don't know if a buyer would be from CA, FL, how do I set a shipping cost? Is there anyway around the multiple shipping profile issue? Ideally, customers would buy multiple items from a shop at a time, so why wouldn't the shipping compound in an organic way? I wouldnt want customers to be overcharged. Honestly this process is so frustrating I already want to close down, I've spent way too much time trying to figure this out.

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me in Canada, our post office's site breaks it down to domestic, USA, and international rates. That's where I can gauge how much each will be because the flat rate is constant.
      Because of this on my shipping profiles, I have it set to the same three locations: within Canada, USA, and international. Through that I just input the same number as what the post office rate charges. (under your shipping profile, you can put how much to charge depending on location the buyer is in)
      Based off where the person lives, they will already be able to see their designated shipping cost for their location. Hope this clarifies it a bit 😊

      Let's say for example the item you're shipping is $20 and shipping is $16. The total would be $36 right? I would probs shift maybe $10-15 to your item price so your shipping cost is lower. In the end you could price your item at $30 with a shipping price of $6. In the end, they're still paying $36 to cover everything but someone is more likely to buy something with a shipping price of $6 than $16.
      As long as your total (item + shipping) is the same, it should be fine. Etsy will pay you all the money from your shipping price (minus like maybe a couple cents for their shipping fee because Etsy 🙄)
      Hope this clarifies it a bit 😊

    so im planning on opening an etsy store selling stickers and i have a question
    so you know how there is a shipping price for the buyers that u set
    so when you set the price for example we will say 20 bucks
    where does the 20 bucks go do you get it or not and if you do is there any fees
    also does the shipping price that you set have anything to do with the price you pay to ship your items

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you would get the $20 you set (minus a minor shipping fee etsy takes off. I'm not sure how much exactly but they take a bit per transaction). Basically that $20 is what Etsy is giving you to pay off your shipping costs whether that's through buying their shipping labels or your own postage.

      @@DoodlesnTea so basically they take the shipping price u pay from that 20$

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@inanexistentialcrisis7378 think of it this way:
      Whatever you set up for shipping price to be is what you're asking the buyer to pay YOU to mail out the order. So if you set it to $20, the buyer would think "oh it costs this shop owner $20 to mail out my order".
      Of course if your shipping price is too high, some buyers might not like that. So you can say make your item more expensive to lower your shipping price but in the end, they're actually paying the same amount (I gave an example in the video!)
      But long answer short, you will be getting the money you set for shipping price. Etsy might just take a couple cents because that's Etsy 🙄

Thank you for the video!

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd suggest raising your item price so you can show that your shipping price is lower. Either way, someone is going to have to pay the amount for shipping but you can trick their mindset into thinking they're not paying as much (I use an example at the end of the video!)
      If you're purchasing a shipping label, you buy it off Etsy and stick it on your package. At the post office, you just need to drop it off. Nothing else needs to be done (yay avoiding human interactions! Lol)
      If you're writing the address, you'd need to go purchase stamps at the post office to mail it off! Of course this depends on if you can mail it as lettermail (I talk about that in my calculating shipping price video!)
      Essentially the money a buyer pays for shipping (in the order) is giving to YOU to pay for shipping out their order. Hope this helps 😊

    Hi! This was a super helpful video, i haven't found anything so far that talks about shipping lighter weight items. The other annoying thing is that Etsy doesn't support flat letter mail, so the automated shipping options make a single greeting card hella expensive! Do you have any video that focusses on how you tackle manually setting up shipping costs for international shipping? Thank you so much!! :)

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Shruti 😊 yeah it's definitely annoying. I've had some people ask me to make a video showing how I set up shipping profiles from start to finish so I have that scheduled for the future!
      To give a short quick answer though, I just set my shipping prices based off how much Canada post charges for lettermail. I mail out 90% of my orders with stamps now (this vid is kind of old for my workflow too 😅). If you don't live in Canada, I'd suggest looking up the lettermail rates on your postal office and seeing what they charge 👍

      @@DoodlesnTea hello! Thank-you for taking the time to reply to my query! Actually, I do live in Canada which is why I appreciated this post so much. Not many talk about Canadian shipping, and that can get frustrating. If you don't mind a follow up question, for letter mail, I notice that Etsy doesn't offer that. So do you manually enter the cost to ship by letter? And do you also include the price to track it? Sorry I could also email you if you prefer! Thanks again, I really appreciate it 😊

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shruti0488 no worries! I manually input the shipping price on the shipping profiles in Etsy. When I mail out an order, i write the address on the envelope. By doing this, unfortunately you don't get tracking but I've only have maybe 1 or 2 orders that were actually lost (out of maybe 300 orders). You can always buy tracking to add on but that's at least $10 extra. At that rate, might as well just buy a shipping label off Etsy 😂
      If you're afraid of it being lost but also want to keep shipping low, you could set up two options of shipping for people: tracking and no tracking. That way if they really wanted tracking, they can pay extra for it. If not, then they accept the risk of it being lost and you won't send a replacement (for example). With the extra money people pay for tracked shipping, you can directly buy a shipping label off Etsy and input your envelope dimensions there. I've been doing that for my washi tape orders to the states and international because it's a bit too thick to be considered lettermail anymore 🙃

    • @DoodlesnTea
      @DoodlesnTea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a good idea! I would suggest maybe adding a half of your shipping price into the sticker. For me, my shipping price is based off my local post office's price for lettermail (ranges from $2-$3ish depending on where it's going) so I find people don't mind paying that. I'd try to keep the shipping price lower than your item itself. Even when I go online shopping, I always end up not buying things because shipping price is like double the cost of the item I'm paying.
      It's a lot of trial and error to see how people would react but I'd suggest adding some of the shipping price into your stickers to start out and see how that goes first!
