      as someone who works for a video game company, the dev's aren't the ones who make these kinds of decisions or mechanics. I know what you're saying, I get it, i'm just pointing out the nomenclature because, as a dev, i have fuck all to do with my company making cash decisions, in game or out.

    • @iro6758
      @iro6758 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@flavoracid Meanwhile, Stormtroopers: "Bro, I only load the gun..."
      Seriously though lol - it's a bit disingenuous for dev's to keep pretending that they aren't literally doing this. After decades...
      Especially since they tend to introduce themselves, as proudly and enthusiastically as possible, as a dev - for whatever game company.
      This bizarre disconnect everyone has, where they literally have 0 accountability for what they do at their job, while basing their entire life, pridefully, around that job - is textbook insanity... and perfectly explains the state of the industry(society) today.
      There were always going to be garbage, pachinko style, games... Because that's literally how games started - historically.
      That never meant that literally all games ever made must literally treat players like they hadn't, actually, ALREADY paid for the fucking thing.
      Most-importantly because that literally makes it a different game...
      Have you ever played Far Cry Primal?
      It's content/story is a really cool, relatively short(6-12 hour? been years) campaign - pasted over a subset of re-imagined Far Cry 4 map terrain. (different trees, buildings - it looks dif, but saved dev time)
      Problem: the "devs" sold that idea, before selling us the game...
      Instead of THAT game that they had, actually, made... what was released was that game, plus 40-70 hours of grind forced along the way.
      It is a - literally - different GAME, now - despite the story being identical.
      Read: they - practically - never made the game, that they literally made...
      Congrats on the "profession"
      Or the last Deux Ex game, which was supposed to launch a series - but killed the entire IP, because the publishers forced MTX in the last couple weeks of development...
      Which changed the game...
      And literally killed the franchise. The entire IP.
      Devs need to stop willfully, silently, proudly churning out anti-consumer - functionally broken - "games", if they don't want to get any blame.
      (Or, if they ever want to see their work actually reach the market - wtf)
      Literally no other profession - on Earth - is allowed such a ludicrous amount of forgiveness, with regards to what they're literally producing.
      Example: if a roofer sold you a roof, which he said would be installed in august...
      And he took your money, under those conditions.
      In the gaming industry, he can install that 3 years later - in march.
      That's already insane.
      Then consider being forced to "patch" the roof when they wanted, without reservation or warning (this is how Steam operates, and why music in games like GTA have been vanishing)
      Then, you add that the roof doesn't, actually, have to... function. because it's assumed that they will be patching it...
      Then you add that they don't, actually, have to keep patching it - and they will abandon it, without warning - at will.
      Then you add that they install 3rd party hardware which drains your electric bill - just to make sure you didn't, somehow, steal the fucking roof.
      Then you add that in order to do business with them, you literally must agree that you literally don't buy anything from them, ever - so much as enter into an open-ended rental agreement - and that you will literally, never, own the roof. (again, this is literally how Steam legally operates - and how they maintain the "right" to revoke your whole library, at will)
      Then you add that the most-popular dev studios go into publishing... and cause all of this shit, all over again.
      How many times do I have to reference Valve (the company that legally argued that you are not deserving of any refund, under any circumstances - AKA, actual Ferengi ), or do I need to mention Cyberpunk 2077 - omfg...
      Also, Bethesda unlawfully partnered with Valve - to force players to install Steam, to be able to play Skyrim...
      Unlawful, because they literally never told anyone about it, until players put the DVD into their computer and it said "must install Steam"
      That's actually why everyone use Steam.
      It was, literally, *unlawfully forced* on the community - by 2 different "well-liked" developers... Literally.
      I want to be very-clear, that I'm speaking literally and honestly when I say that:
      A guy running a 3 card monte stand in a bus station, is making a more honest living than 99.999% of game "devs"
      Another example of how _other_ professions have standards:
      There are chefs, and there are cooks.
      Devs pretend that they're chefs... while only accepting the responsibility of a cook.
      It's incompetent, at best...

    I got hooked on this game, for a few weeks until my computer broke down. And I am really happy it did. Beautiful game, interesting PvP, and the way I get obsessed with games I would have spent thousands of hours and probably some money. But while waiting for my new computer I also realized the obvious that I didn't want to think about while playing. This game is 5% entertainment, 5% joy and 90% WORK. While logged in you are basically on a 24/7 schedule with repetitve non-challenging braindead systematic tasks non-stop. Same thing day in and day out, and for what? No interesting gear really, nothing special or unique about any character whatsoever - it's all just the same sets being upgraded in the same way over and over again to raise a single value.
    This game is not relaxing entertainment, it's a game easily worth $30-50 for the PvE-content it brings with a first playthrough - but nothing more. Everything else is just me sitting there, planning my life around a stupid schedule with neverending notifications about the same things every single day. And the only thing that really matters end-game is more gambling than anything else, especially once you start putting money into it. This is of course just my opinion, but damn I am happy my computer broke down. Now instead I got my new PC and paid $1 for a xbox live-pass, casually rotating through games like Halo Infinite, Gears 5, Outrides, Anvil and so on. No stress, no schedules, just whatever I feel like in a relaxed pace offline or 1-2 hours competitive online. And I am having a blast while at the same time spending maybe 30% of the time on all these games of what I did in Lost Ark.

    • @1TotalJabroni
      @1TotalJabroni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I hear you. I will never understand why MMOs are still so popular. I played WoW on and off for 8 years but eventually I realized how everything was timegated, any accomplishment I achieved would soon be invalidated by new content, and once I stopped enjoying PvP I realized it was just a chore. I enjoyed the vast majority of my time playing WoW, but especially modern WoW, man, it's really pure dog shit now. And Lost Ark to me is almost as bad as modern WoW, solely because of how it punishes you and wastes your time with boring chores and absurdly easy content.
      I have been playing Path of Exile for most of 5 years now. It's free to play, has immense depth, complexity, replayability, and releases new content and shifts up the skill metas multiple times per year. Every league launch and reset feels like Christmas morning (every 3-4 months) and the best part is I decide my own goals. Whether it's a certain character build or endgame goals, I am able to spend my time doing whatever sounds fun to me, accomplishing goals I set for myself, not artifical time gated bull shit.

I could make it difficult for you and just throw out games like "Left for dead" or even simply "Chess" etc, but its pointless as I am sure you would find some way of explaining how it is a farming sim.
      The question then becomes, what kind of farming do people enjoy? Of course we will have different preferences, but me personally I like variation, a bit of a challenge and having to figure things out or simply fight for them. Not just show up on time, hit a button to teleport to a questspot, click the same three spots for 5 minutes and then hand in, only to repeat this process daily together with countless others that all really follow the same model kind of. If you are sitting on the edge of your seat at any other point than your first encounter with any new content, before it becomes a grind, or while honing - then I am happy for you.
      If not, I then suggest you reflect over your experience and how it could be improved, what you want to really feel entertained and have fun, and then if you can maybe get this experience in a better way from some of the countless other games out there. Unless its just a distraction from reality, something to kill concious time effectively - that is not at all uncommon and for that the game works wonders.

    As an addiction counselor, this is gambling symptoms of addiction 101, you can see the literal moment in this video where he realizes how bad its got, how much he probably wishes he knew about s.korea's 'exchange rate' and how attached to that game's money grabbing system he is because he threw that big kinda money at it.
    Then hearing about it being cheaper in korea? It's like telling a cocaine user, 'yea its $60 for a gram in the US but in Peru, a gram is a few cents' and them immediately booking a flight over to Peru, kinda thing. i Wonder if he started learning south korean and got a VPN immediately.
    Since addiction is normally a 4-5 step process - experimentation (with small purchases) then regular use/buying (getting more frequent) then high risk use/buying (by this point you don't realize how bad its got, this is where the guy *didn't realize* he was at the start) and then realization of dependency (exactly the moment he placed his head in his hands) and then acceptance of addiction/needing help, which is the point he must reach to want to actually stop it. many people remain at step 4 and lose an AWFUL lot and with gambling/overspending related addiction, that normally means losing EVERYTHING.

I remember how difficult it was to stop playing even when I didn't want to play anymore because of the feeling that "everything I've done and paid for so far would amount to nothing if I stop". I can sympathize with how difficult it is for a lot of these guys to stop, especially if you're having fun playing the game and you're a competitive player in a top spot.

So even if you for example are able to straight up use the game directly (which people don't, they RMT, which is outside of the game), you still need to be able to DO the content or you'll never get invited to a good group and get laughed at, and perma farm content with pugs, which really sucks because it's like a 50/50 success even if you do good.

    This is how I feel when I realized all the money I've wasted on MMO subscriptions. This is why if a "play forever" game ain't freemium or 1 time purchase, I don't even bother.
    Even should I regret spending too much on a freemium game, I got no one to blame but myself and I own up to my responsibility. Of course, this has never happen cuz I'm level-headed. Even when I do spend a large sum, I do so fully knowing what I'm getting into so I don't regret it. If you are one of those who aren't level-headed, then don't play these games.

    • @mesozoicera87
      @mesozoicera87 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meh. I've played Everquest and WoW continuously over the years. Prob putting $200 a year into subs and expansions for both since 2001. But that being said, let's be real. If I'm playing an average of 20 hours a week when active, that's around a thousand hours of entertainment a year for that $250. Which is like .20 cents an hour for entertainment. Even considering 21 years of subs/expansions and god knows what else, I guarantee I'm under $6000 total spent for that time. I know people who spend $10k+ a year on hobbies they spend less than 50 hours on per year.
      Def never feel like it was a waste for me. I've dropped 4 months worth of MMO sub on single player games that I've finished in less than a dozen hours plenty of times, those feel like more a waste to me, in comparison. That's why I'm really picky about which games I purchase these days.

    Don't know how it is in NA but in EU we are facing a massive deflation for a few weeks now, I assume it is due to Amazon counter measures against bots, reducing the amount of gold circulating in the region.
    I dont think the value of mats is linked to gold inflation/deflation tho, if we were to get more gold naturally in next patch mats prices would go up as well.
    Probably Korean having more ways to get mats + not needing to hone anymore (for a portion of the population) lower the mats value

    • @ToolforOffice
      @ToolforOffice 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You say you don't think the value of mats is related to the gold market? And then contradicted that statement in the same sentence. Interesting take lol

    • @johnb8319
      @johnb8319 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are not wrong because the reason behind it is due to reduced gold income in t3 abyss dungeons and argos. The gold income you get now is the nerfed version that was decided in kr server to fight off gold inflation, however as most players dont reside in those areas with their main, this was very questionable to kr players as well. Srsly i dont understand why they did not leave any content between 1325 to 1370 as well as reverse the gold income in na version to be nerfed in few months afterwards when the legion raids come out.

    • @thomasb5307
      @thomasb5307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToolforOffice I was refering to the price of mats in Kr being way cheaper than for us, while the value of gold was way lower aswell.
      For us, the price of mats increases and decreases with gold inflation and deflation, so injecting gold alone would not allow you to buy more mats since they would cost more
      (also price and value are different concepts, i said mat value remain constant but their price go up because gold value is the one changing, if i compare the price of a t2 bag of shard now vs weeks ago, the price dropped by half but so did the price of crystal, so the value of t2 bag compared to crystal remains the same)

I can't find a single game I've played where I was F2P and I felt like I needed to pay to "get more damage". The most I've done is pay a company because I want to support them when I really like their game. That's about it. Most games out there really, really aren't P2W.
