I am so glad someone’s talking about how great a boost this pedal can be on top of it being an excellent fuzz. Very tempted by the Peppers’ Pedals Humongous Fuzz just for the ability to cycle through the modes with a footswitch alone. The HM-2 EQ knob and clean blend are just great added bonuses.
Still have mine bought back in 1994. I remember walking into a local guitar shop and heard someone playing it, and at that moment, I knew i had to buy it. It works very well with other pedals too.
You could buy these for $40 in the 90's. Everyone thought the fuzz modes sounded like hot garbage, and it did not sell. Jus didn't turn me on to the pedal though. Steph Carpenter(Deftones) was using the boost mode all over ATF and White Pony and recommended it in some gear interview back in the day. Remember quite a few of the Nu- Metalers using the boost mode as the anti-TS of the time.
Good comment. Yeah, it didn't sound like the more popular fuzz pedals at the time, the Fuzz Face and the Big Muff. The FZ-2 also sounds amazing with a bass, something that doesn't get mentioned very often.
@@sassulusmagnus I don't understand the SF300 thing either... I own all these pedals. I can barely play chords on Fuzz mode II on my original boxes. It's like the pronounced ring mod effect mangles the signal and they don't render. The SF300 reminds me more of a polished BeeBaa... No differential pair of FETS on the front end, just a 16+ dip IC doing the work so the boost is completely different, as well. It's just a work alike that sounds like all the other boosted superfuzz variants out there. FZ2 deserves more respect than being compared to that plastic pile of shit with a zinc baseplate. JHS needs to apologize for letting that rumor run wild around the gear community, he doesn't even own an FZ2 for comparison or a PQ4 for that matter, in that massive collection of his. He was just spouting nonsense from an old FSB thread.
@@scramblesthedeathdealerthat was Eric Valentine's PQ4, and that pedal doesn't rely on a mirrored differential FET pair for its boosting like the FZ2. Josh typically used a Maestro/Stone Deaf Parametric Filter or a Qzone Jus Oborn, is who I mentioned, and he used the boost throughout the entire Electric Wizard catalog. Mode 2 was just the Dopethrone gimmick. If you own the FZ2, that sound gets tired fast.
Appreciate the video brother. Gonna have to get this badboy. I like the Doom and the Hendrix tones . I mainly play modern metal tones but I'd like to get some fuzzy doom flavors going on. I've gotten into the stoner/doom metal more last few years.
As stated the dose it doom stuff seems awesome, but also check out Fuzzlord Effects for some sick fuzzy tones. I’ve reviewed most of their pedals on my channel.
Absolutely! Does it Doom and Fuzzlord are top of the line. Like I said, Elder God is the best pedal I ever bought for CRUSHING fuzz. I am 48yrs young. Been playing since I was 13. Took a few years off in my early 40's from playing guitar because that is what happens when your soon to be ex-wife let's you go. When she does... Damn! Time to Doom all over again.
Nice axes man, kick ass tones🤘🏻.I use EHX Rams Head and EQD Dream Crusher V2 fuzz face and a Billy Gibbons Octavio for all my fuzz glory! Can't go wrong with the Boss fuzz tho.
Nice video i just bought an FZ-2 i also have an Earthquaker Devices Hizumitas, a Fender Shields Blender, Wren and Cuff Box of War i really wanna get a Wren and Cuff Black-Violet Special Caprid OG, Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 OG, Catalinbread Fuzzrite, Sola Sound MKI Tone Bender by Stu Castledine, the Sola Sound Professional MKII Tone Bender by D*A*M, 4 Analogman Sun Faces with AC128, Red Dot NKT-275, BC108C & BC109C Transistors, a Acid Fuzz Buzz-Tone, a Ibanez No. 59 Standard Fuzz, Roland AF-100 BeeBaa, MXR M103 Script Blue Box, Ampeg SCP-OD Scrambler, Maestro BB-1 Bass Brassmaster, a Roger Mayer Visage, Roger Mayer Axis & Roger Mayer Classic Fuzz for my dirt pedalboard
Picked up my Behringer Super Fuzz around 2012 when I was in highschool. I believe it was my first pedal I ever bought with my own money. My friends were listening to terrible stuff like Five Finger Death Punch, Metallica, and Iron Maiden while I was eviscerating my eardrums with Electric Wizard, SLEEP, Conan, and Sunn O))) and on that same note my first vinyl record I ever bought was Dopesmoker, because it had just been reissued on Southern Lord at the time. Great times, too bad they never got it despite my continual push for them to listen and rise above that normie radio trash.
I love the fuzz tones from this circuit, but the middle position clean boost and the buffer on this are what keeps it on my board. My tone is better from this pedal when its not even on
There was actually a couple early ones, the AF-100 BeeBaa and the AF-60 BeeGee fuzz pedals are both fairly well know. Neither of these were in the typical boss compact format and were actually pre-boss, so they have the Roland name on them. The Hyper Fuzz was the first compact fuzz pedal from boss.

I just got one of these in the mail today, I can't wait to play it when I get home!
Love the Jazzmaster choice for doom
It’s such a cool and underrated choice for the genre imo
Yeah very cool. I use a JM and a SG.
For sure. For anything really.

Superfuzz into a high headroom amp really shines. Tons of harmonics.
Cool review, thanks!

Elder God from Does it Doom. Best fuzz I ever bought. Check out the reviews. Have a good one.

What's your chain for recording guitar? I rly like your doom sound
For this video I believe I ran it into a Dunwich DA120 and then Into the strymon iridium.
Most know this by now, but for easy reference: Boss FZ2 = Behringer SuperFuzz SF300 (£24, $29)
What fuzz came before the FZ-2? You said the FZ-2 was the second fuzz from Boss/Roland.

Yeah Peppers pedals are awesome too. I got the Dirty Tree and forgot he makes a badass fuzz as well.
I’ve heard nothing but great things about the dirty tree, I really need to pick one up.
Did you ever try one since this video ? Great Vibe brotha.
Simple answer: there is no "best" Fuzz whatsoever. The best Fuzz is the one that serves your purpose, depending on the sound you wish to achieve.
