I love that you mentioned the 2020 Booker shortlist. I still can't believe Hilary Mantel wasn't even shortlisted

I agree about Monsters. The memoir-ish parts weakened the book. I was really excited about Real Life when it was published, but I thought it was horribly overwritten. As for Prophet Song, I was never all that interested, but you've sealed the deal!

Oh interesting thoughts on Prophet Song, was hoping to pick it up next year. I think the criticism that literary books are praised for doing something well that has been done over and better in genre fiction is just a valid representation of how literary readers look down on genre fiction and thus have probably not encountered those ideas. Those of us who read not only lit fic but are also into genre fiction have a different background going into those books.

I'm just going to ignore the Real Life portion of this, just like I've been ignoring the fact that Prophet Song won the Booker Prize. Absolutely insane.

Thank you for your honesty! I was wondering about Prophet Song and now I know to give it a pass.

    "Stains" I'm dying 🤣
I will avoid all of these books as your taste and mine are similar. I appreciate you as always 🙌💛

Ok first of all, your look is so on point here. Love the red lip with the leopard print and those earrings are my fave!
Second of all, great video as always! I now have a renewed urge to purchase the Hunger Games trilogy in the classic paperback format I remember.

For the Newfie authors (& for any author using slang that wouldn't be common in the rest of Canada or the USA) they could have a glossary of terms in the front or back of the book if they really wanted to.

Great video. I did like Yellowface but did not examine it deeply but rather just flew thru it and wanted to see how she would get caught up in her own bad deed. The Prophet Song has been of interest but I figured I would read the Bee Sting rather than Prophet Song as it has gotten such good reviews on BookTube. Looking forward to hearing your best.

I agree with your take on Real Life. I saw the potential that his later novels can definitely reach, but there were just too many little things that made me hop of the bandwagon. First novel energy.

So with you on both Yellow Face and Real Life! I honestly can’t understand why so many people lift these books (and authors) up so much. Also, love your nails matching Greek Life!

Yellowface has been on my radar, I've only read The Poppy War by R F Kuang, which was impressive, but I think I'll pass on Yellowface from what you say. Thanks for reading Prophet Song so I don't have to.

Great video. I really enjoyed Real Life, however I didn't enjoy Filthy Animals at all, and likely won't read anything by him again for a long time! And I am definitely okay to skip Prophet Song, if anything I would just read Western Lane again, as that book I loved.

I read a section of Real Life (from the beginning) and I actually thought I could read the whole thing. Most of the hyped novels this year (lit fic) are not engaging from the first page. I dipped into Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and wasn't surprised that the author writes YA. I thought it read like YA and didn't believe in her knowledge of gaming. Hunger Games is derivative of Battle Royale. I always believe that's where she ripped her idea from.

the hunger games was also inspired by roman gladiatorial battles and early 2000s reality tv shows. nothing is original. we all draw inspiration from outside ourselves to create something new.

@kat8559 However, there are innovative ways to tell an old story or use familiar ideas and tropes, HG is not one of them. Battle Royale is.

I was interested in Real Life because the author is from my state and I was interested in supporting someone from home but.......no no no. The characters did not seem real, it felt like a play with such outlandish comments and it appears he writes a lot of autofiction. I dont get the fandom
