    Naargh, I reckon the MacGregors were just pissed off about the price of an ice cream in the Luss giftshop.

      My great grand father was born in Glencoe, he was a Highlander who spoke Gaelic , his surname was Bryce , the Mcgegors also used the name Bryce, the Bryces became a sept of Clan Macfarlane.

    My surname is Colquhoun, and I'm learning more about it's history, including this particular battle. Its a really good summary, the only thing I'd say is that Colquhoun is pronounced Ku'hoon, the l is silent, as is the qu lol

    My family changed its name from MacGregor in 1604, they lost their lands, illegally seized by the Crown and two of them.were sold into slavery in Jamaica... they never returned. My ancestor, who was Clan Tutor was extrajudicially murdered by James VI alongside 10 other MacGregors at the Merkat Cross in Edinburgh on 16th January 1604.

      The British didn't capture Jamaica until 1655.

      @@nigelsheppard625 slavery existed in Jamaica long before the British conquered it, they were sold into Spanish slavery. This was a very deliberate policy to isolate undesirables from English speakers, although there is no evidence that either spoke English and were more likely to have only spoken Gaelic

    I always find it ironic that a lot of highland clans(including my own)were jacobites when the stuart royalty were doing their best to destroy the whole way of life.

    Surely that would work to their advantage though, fugitives have always used a pseudonym. “What’s your name!?”, “Fergus MacNeill”, “ ah right, very well” 😀

      The MacFarlaine's stole Colquoun's wrought iron gates, when Colquhoun asked the MacFarlaine's for his gates back, their reply was "If you want them, come and get them", he never did go to retrieve his gates so they remained in the posession of the MacFarlaine's.

      Look at the Massacre of Glencoe. Was even worse than Glen Fruin, in my opinion

      The people (in Scotland) haven't voted for the last five UK Prime Ministers ... if it hadn't escaped your notice, but we're still lumbered with them.

      It was because of the proscription against Clan Gregor that Conor McGregor's ancestors relocated from Scotland to Ireland. My ancestors moved to Speyside in 1690 to make illicit whisky.

    Why do the colquhouns have a french motto on their coat of arms?

    • @iainmc9859
      @iainmc9859 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For the same reason that many Scottish tombstones were written in Latin, Gaelic, French and Scots. It was a multilingual society, amongst the aristocracy. There are four different words for waterfall in the area as well - Fall (English), Eas (Gaelic), Linn (French) and Loup (Scots).
