  • What is The Clans of The Scottish Highlands?
    This massive tome, commissioned by Queen Victoria and published in 1845, is a catalog of detailed descriptions of traditional highland dress. It also includes brief histories of each of the Scottish clans represented.
    Beautiful, engrossing and inspiring, 'The Clans' is widely considered to be the first comprehensive, illustrated record of Highland dress in the world. The introduction purports that the work is highly accurate - free from the errors of previous romanticized documents.
    But is it?
    In this video we examine where this amazing work of art came from, who made it and why. We also discuss its impact on Scottish and British culture and the legacy we live with today.

    Sir Walter Scott also went around collecting Ballads from the Borders. My wife's ancestor, Robert Shortreed, was a close friend who took Scott on the "raids" to collect them over a seven year period. He definitely was on a mission to save and revive Scottish culture.

    I have one of the reprint editions, it was the later 1970s I think. Nice oversize, gorgeous volume! PS: it was the Congress of Vienna, not "Verona."

    • @crippmeister
      @crippmeister 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Congress of Vienna took place in 1814-15; George IV's visit to Scotland coincided with the 5th and final international conference which followed the Napoleonic Wars, which was held in Verona.

    Help with Irish county tartans.☘☘☘
    Can anyone provide information about the designers of the Irish county tartans and their purpose in representing the unique identity and heritage of specific Irish counties?
    The design elements, including color choices, patterns, and symbolism, may vary depending on each tartan and its historical or cultural significance.

    • @USAKiltsOfficial
      @USAKiltsOfficial  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They were designed in 1995 by a mill. No real significance to the colors chosen.

      Current best practice, according to the museum curators we spoke to, is freshly washed and dried hands. Gloves decrease tactile sensation and increase liklihood of tearing pages.
