      Obviously you want them both but Bird can play with anyone. High school and college he had to carry his team and did. Celtics his first chmpionship team was pretty different from his second and third. He had some great teammates but they all loved to play with him.
      Jordan didn't win until he got Scottie although he is probably the greatest individual player of all time. So I want Bird.

    He had bone spurs on both ankles that were embedded into his Achilles tendons. After 6 games of the 1989 season Bird had surgery on both heels. His stats when he came back in 1990 season are impressive.

    Walton protecting the rim, as best he could. I don't remember seeing him man to man on Jordan. As Coop said, Bird did so many things extremely well, off the ball, and with the ball, and many weren't, necessarily in his stats. He was more fun to watch than The Globe Trotters, but was as serious as a heart attack about winning.

    Larry Bird created the biggest turnaround in NBA history at the time when he joined the Celtics. They went from a 20-win team to a 60-win team in his ROOKIE YEAR! They won a championship in his second year. Of course he did the same thing for the Sycamores in College. Bird may be the greatest

    What's up Hen....just a fun fact. The Paxson that you saw for the Celtics was Jim Paxson. The one that you saw for the Bulls was John Paxson, his little brother. Both were good role players. I think Jim averaged 18 pts a game for the Blazers one year, but for the Celts he was a run all day, catch and shoot guy.

    Shovelling gravel in 1985, while building his mother's driveway is what originally took down his back. After he played six games in 1988 he went out for a double Achilles surgery. Achilles surgery on one foot generally would end a career. He had it on both feet, and was still an All-Star. Check out his numbers in his last three seasons. It's pretty wild

    • @alanela6761
      @alanela6761 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You might also note that the year bird was out was the only year of his career that the Celtics struggled. They were 42-40 in the 8 seed. When Bird first entered the league, joining the 29 win Celtics, the Celtics won 61, 62, and 63 games in Birds first three seasons. In 1983 they won 56 while Philadelphia was winning their division with 65. Then, Boston won 62, 63, 67, 59, 57. (88-89 was next, 42 wins with bird out). Bird came back from the double Achilles surgery and leads the C's to 52, 56, 51 wins before retiring.
      The year that he was out for that surgery is the only year that he was not an all star. He also made all NBA 10 times, which means that he made it once after that those foot surgeries...

    I love both players(I think Jordan is the best player of all time and Larry the greatest if you feel the difference) and am not a huge fan of Isaiah but that conversation was about the 80s and truth be told in the 80s Jordan was indeed a non factor. Yes his talent and skill was undisputed but as he himself said one man cannot beat the Celtics(or Lakers, or 76ers or Pistons). Also to the point of not winning a championship in his first 6 years well Magic won it in his first and Larry in his second XD, but then again the 80s were a crazy ear with historic talent. Anyway great reaction man, keep up the good work!

There was an interview where jordan said the white guys on his team work hard but dont have talent and the black guys have talent but dont work hard. Its clear to see he was a volume shooter cause he gave up on trying to always pass to his teammates when he felt he had a better chance of scoring if he had thw ball. Its the same with kobe when shaq and most of his great teammates left in 04. Point being you can only work with what you got.

    For all the greatness and accolades of Jordan he could never get past Bird in the postseason and went 0-6. Bird dominated him. It was only after Bird retired after the '91-92 season that Jordan and the Bulls went on their dynasty run in the 90's. But Bird IMO was the true G.O.A.T. and was the most complete basketball player ever. His basketball I.Q., mental toughness and killer instinct on the court was off the charts. His shooting and passing was other-worldly. As mentioned he was the true G.O.A.T. Jordan is a close second and both are on my All-Time starting 5 which is as automatic as breathing..

    Just informationally:
    From Essentially Sports:
    "And Celtic legend Kevin McHale, who was part of those teams, talked about how Jordan was different from Bird and Magic. He says, "Here's the difference between those three, and I saw it many, many times. Larry and Magic could control the game by taking 10 shots. They'd have 17 points, 15 rebounds, 12 assists, 4 steals."
    "If you got Michael Jordan to take 10 shots, you control him".

      @Tcheera ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean... I saw McHale say that, but aside from injuring him out of a game with flagrants, in reality how many times did teams hold MJ to 10 shots in reality? LOL. I mean it sounds like a good quote but when you break it down it's like "Well but does it mean anything in reality?" Teams really couldn't lock down Jordan like that.
      I compare it to the phrase "You want to have your cake and eat it too." It's like... well what's the point of having cake if you don't eat it? Dumb saying.

      Yep. Zone defenses were illegal and the rule was that you could only double a guy with the ball. Yeah, theoretically, that could make scoring easier, but I think the difference in other rules and the way the game was refereed made it harder to score. That's one thing that Jordan should always get credit for -- he could still average 35 while getting the hell beat out of him until the league started limiting the physicalness of the game.

    Thanks for sharing this video. I have Jordan as my #1 and Kareem as my #2 and after that it gets difficult due to so many good players and so many variables. If you are asking which player I would build a team around I have to give the edge to Bird. I feel Bird can blend his skills to fit with the other 4 players and raise the level of play for the team more so than maybe any other player? Look at what Bird did at Indiana State. Bird did not have to have the ball in his hands to dominate the game. His hustle and IQ and passing and rebounding and shooting present multiple problems to defend. Bird did have a better team than Jordan in Jordan's early years but I feel if you gave each player 4 identical twins with equal skills, Bird would find a way to get his team to win the game. Bird led by example ( see Robert Parish about leadership skills on both) and understood the dynamics of the 5 on 5 game and players strength and weaknesses and tendencies. Bird never got into fistfights or screamed at his teammates in practice. I see top ten lists today where Bird is at or near the bottom, and his skillset ( Bird was a good defender early in his career) and his 50-40-90 shooting have to put him into the top 5 discussion IMO.

    I'll tell you why Thomas now dislikes MJ, MJ did not let him on the Dream Team. I watched EVERY televised game of Bird and MJ simply could not beat Bird and the Green Machine! Scoring is nice, but that an individual thing, winning is a team thing and Bird could do it better than anyone in the NBA. He was so unselfish. It was believed, if Bird took all the shots he thought he could make, his average game would definitely be in the 40's and so, so many more triple-doubles, no doubt. He watered down his talent for the team and the win. Bottom line, how can a slow, semi-athletic player be so very great compared to such an elite athletic player, simply outsmarted them all and was gifted with his hands and mind. So, pound for pound Bird is the NBA GOAT.

    In 87 the Celtics were very injured. I can understand Jordan losing to the 86 Celtics but a nineteen eighty-seven to get swept again it causes a person to scratch their head. But you must understand the main reason why the Celtics winning it's because of Larry Bird's effect on his teammates.

    Kinda interesting topic, because Worthy was the KEY to the Lakers speed-up. They'd slow it down, slow it down, slow it down.... and then explode and score 15-20 points in a few minutes. Fuck with yo HAID....

    before Curry, I'd choose Bird, Bird couldn't even miss when he was messing around...but even Larry was in awe at Curry who shot 97-100 3ptrs in practice including 70something in a row....that is straight up alien...best pure shooter ever...has to be

    All basketball say they are taller than they really are. Larry Bird was really 6'10" instead of 6'9". When players met Bird, they always said that Bird was taller than they thought he would be!

    I think they waited until a near shooting motion from bird to double as they know how much he liked to just dump it off on the now-open man in that situation.

    Isiah Thomas was probably angry at MJ for keeping him out of The Dream Team in ‘92. It’s been said that MJ wouldn’t commit to the Team until he was sure that Thomas wasn’t on it.

    I’m the biggest Larry Bird fan ever, but … if the #2 seed 1991 Celtics hadn’t choked and lost in 6 games to the Pistons in the eastern conference semis … there is no doubt in my mind that the eventual champion Bulls would’ve beaten the Celtics in the Eastern conference finals in the next round.
    I am forever saddened that we got robbed of that series, especially since the Pistons went on to be swept by Chicago in 4 games and then infamously walked off without shaking the Bulls’ hands.

    I think MJ is the goat. But I’d still pick Larry first cause he made everyone better. MJ as a sole player was just crazy talented but Larry’s IQ was just light years ahead of the rest so he could change the dynamic of the game and team simply by his presence. Hated watching them play each other though cause I was a big MJ fan growing up 😅

    People keep saying Bird had a better team. Funny thing it, it's the same team that won 20 games the year before Bird got there. Bird added 40 wins in his rookie year and won tittle in his 2nd year. Let that sink in. Same team, 3x the wins. The only reason Bird had a better team was because he made them better. That's what makes Bird the goat. MJ didn't do anything until Bird, Magic and Kareem were gone.

    If memory serves me right, Isaiah was originally from Chicago. And Jordan was in the league 2 years or a year after Isaiah, so he was getting a little upset that he was not getting any recognition. Everything was about Jordan and Isaiah felt he was the better player. That’s why he was the main person to come up with the “Jordan rules” in order to contain him and win games.
    Larry Bird had one of the greatest NBA teams when Jordan was starting out. And people say that Larry schooled Jordan in trash talking, so Jordan learned a lot from Larry and Magic. Clearly Jordan couldn’t compete against a build team like the Celtics. But I think because of these battles, he was able to beat the bad boy Pistons and their dirty plays.

    I mean, Isiah has a legit reason for not liking MJ:the two franchises hated each other, they always went at each other's throat.
    Also, MJ basically said that he wouldn't join the Dream Team if Thomas got in too. That alone would explain a lifelong grudge.

    • @felixmalcherek2919
      @felixmalcherek2919 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also to Thomas' argument for the 80's: Yes, those were "just" 6 years, but it's almost half as many as he played in total (14, 15 if we count the 17 games in '94-'95).

    Pistons-Bulls beef, and a couple other things, lead Jordan to forever hate Isaiah, which apparently kept him off the dream team and ensured the media would never be on his side.
