I remember hearing this theme song from Mannix as a 13 year old. There was always something incredibly attractive about the style of this song. 48 years later, it still moves me. So cool 😎.
+Professor Polymath Amen to THAT, man! This theme song rocks, and is just as good as Bill Conti's classic Rocky Theme "Gonna Fly Now" or the "Peanuts Theme (Linus and Lucy)" by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. Those are good songs, whereas today's music is, like you said, in the toilet. I love the drums on this one as well, especially since I'm also a drummer myself. I'm nowhere THIS good, though.
Must agree with you as a Mannix connoisseur from way back; the theme cooks, as good jazz does. Always enjoyed the show and I was attracted to Gail Fisher.
Wonderful music! Back when TV and movie themes were good enough to also become Top 10 record hits. This orchestra is fabulous, with a great arrangement...fine transcription, too!
Woke up yesterday with the Mannix Theme running in my mind. Listening to this - and watching the score flow by - satisfies my ear bug. More so than the other YT uploads of this! And I enjoy the extra piano stuff I hadn't heard before.
I just love this!!!!!!!!!!!! I was a teenager when Mannix debuted. And being a drummer, I loved the theme song. Never heard this long version before. WDR Big Band with John Riley on drums....Outstanding as usual!!!! Listen to WDR with Gunhild Carling as guest on TH-cam. She's unbelievable. Can't believe this is 3/4 time. Just shows you that Brubeck wasn't the only one who could swing odd time.
I'm a pianist and, when I was a child, I often tried to play the piano part at 0:49. Unfortunately, it was very difficult without any knowledges about chords. And now, I have the piano part right here! Great !!
Holy Cow! I thought this was played in 6/8 and it's in 3/4 and the metronome marking must be about 180-200 bpm. it gets a little tricky holding a jazz ostinato pattern in 3/4 time.
Merveille des Merveilles ! cette orchestration du feuilleton MANNIX que je regardais quand j'étais "ado" sans capter la musique, MERCI et VIVE TH-cam !!!!!!!!!!
LadyofValor ... hey LadyofValor... out of all of the flatfoot private eye show he was the best! Lalo’s best theme song, and Peggy... what a gal! Loved the respect Mike Connors had with here even though a difficult time of racial discord... you would never know it with the show. Mike connors was married to the same gal for decades. Great show and you’re comment is spot on! Wishing you all the best!
As a kid l loved this theme and still love it at 54 years old as a musician this was arranged perfectly !!!!my dad God rest him was a jazz fanatic and with arrangements like this I see why !!! I'm listening to it now as I type
GREAT MUSIC THIS HAS BEEN IN MY HEAD FOR MONTHS ACTUALLY YEARS SINCE 67 WHEN I WAS 6 IVE NEVER FORGOTTEN THIS MUSIC THATS HOW TIMELESS GREAT IT IS. EXTENDED VERSION IVE NOT HEARD THANK YOU !
I wore a Turkish outfit once, walked in and handed four fake sheet copies of this song and $20 to the jazz band playing in a bar in Ballard, Washington and walked out. This song makes my very liver curl with excitement. Peas!
At 1:26 , I get this strange compulsion to say, "Funding for Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood is made possible by WGBH-TV in Boston and by other public television grants." 🤔
Mannix was a great show, but(T) along with and Frank Cannon's sport jackets, got a bit long in the (hounds ?) tooth. Anyway, thanks for sharing, it brings back memories of Dave Grusin and that awesome Zenith tube in the family room ;)
Man this is some awesome music. Back in the 80s as a kid I would watch wrestling on Saturday nights and after it went off that channel would play Mannix. never really got into the show but I would stay up long enough just to hear this theme. Even as a 10 year old kid at tge time I knew good music when I heard it.
Guess a lotta commentators are not aware about the music. This is a fine piece of 5/4 tempo jazz. Like Mission Impossible. Indeed by the same genius composer Lalo Schifrin. This version is a phantastic workout for (German WDR?) big band and shows the true quality of the composition. Usually you can only find the 55 seconds film trailer when looking for it. Which of course can't showcase much more than the wonderful main theme further to and ended by that most remarkable intro.
Jacob, you are very ingenious! Which instruments are doing the main melody? I'm guessing they are saxophones? (tenor?) Who is the phenominal drummer on this recording? Are you playing in the orchestra?
Hi Jacob, Thanks for this GREAT Post. One of my all time favorite grooves. Do you know where I can get the drum transcription? (I am a drummer learning Jazz) Thanks
Sorry coolie. I just now read your question. WDR is German for West Deutscher Rundfunk . Which means West German Broadcasting (Radio) They're one of the greatest big bands in the world. Check out Gunhild Carling with WDR. Or just checkout Gunhild Carling on youtube. She's fantastic!!!
Hi Michael, Life has been hectic but I got around to watching John Riley. He is amazing and so great that he teaches Jazz & Big band. Are you a drummer?
wow, great job transcribing this. i could follow along with practically all of the notes. but what time signature is it? i didn't see one. i know it's like a fast waltz. i'm sorry it took mike connors' death to remind me of this great theme song. i watched "mannix" as a kid and i liked the tune back then. i just didn't know there was a soundtrack album with both the short and this long version on it. i bought them on itunes.
I remember hearing this theme song from Mannix as a 13 year old. There was always something incredibly attractive about the style of this song. 48 years later, it still moves me. So cool 😎.
Written by the same great who wrote Mission Impossible another iconic song.
This tune, heard as a young boy, is why I learned to play the sax! Stunning arrangement.
When I hear this tune it reminds me of watching the mannix show with my father....what a flood of memories....I love the 70’s...
You know music is in the toilet when a 50-year-old TV jingle kicks ass on anything going today.

+classical baby Or "swing" or "grooves"?
Actually, it waltzes.
Wonderful rendition of one of the very hippest TV themes of all time. I have always loved this one and wanted to perform it
Yeah
RIP Mike Connors 1925-2017
I have it as a ringtone on my phone!! RIP MIKE CONNORS (Joe Mannix)
Also RIP Gail Fisher & Joseph Campanella. The latter passed away recently.
Wonderful music! Back when TV and movie themes were good enough to also become Top 10 record hits. This orchestra is fabulous, with a great arrangement...fine transcription, too!
After all these years, still one of my favorites.
The best double-whammy: Mannix theme and WDR Big Band! Oh, yes, another thing, this has been my ringtone for YEARS.
Woke up yesterday with the Mannix Theme running in my mind. Listening to this - and watching the score flow by - satisfies my ear bug. More so than the other YT uploads of this! And I enjoy the extra piano stuff I hadn't heard before.
As good or BETTER than the original!!!!!Awesome job, thanks for putting this up;and for making it happen.Stupendous Orchestra and arrangement.
Who even knows the old school these days? :)
Thank you for the music.
INcredible!! Best version. Loved it. Best TV theme song of all time. Lalo Schifrin lives!
Awesome arrangement and solos! I remembered that theme back in the late 60's when I was about 15 years old and always loved it! Good job:)
Brilliant! A stunning Jazz Waltz in a swing style. Well done!

At 1:26 , I get this strange compulsion to say,

@Vince(open): I know Fred Rogers was a jazz pianist; maybe he had occasion to perform tunes like this at varying functions.
I had to play it back and had to agree.
Like I always said Whenever I heard this as a kid I knew that Mannix was about to get some shit done
Thanks for posting, great arrangement and performance.
You gotta love the Mannix Theme.
Great tune. Dynamite arrangement
OMG, that's so fucking brilliant I can't believe my ears.
Awesome! Came here from Landum Pc's Mann is episode.
I love every note.

same exact thing here
This and the theme from the Jetsons, among others: are polished, sophisticated, compositions that are fun to listen to as well.
If Don Ellis wrote it, it would be in 5/4. :-)

one of the two best piano breaks ever recorded , the other being the break in Buddy Rich's "New Blues".

Freakin' fabulous.

Would love to watch this piece being played by this orchestra/band.

what bad-assed chord changes, especially at the bridge, gotta love Lalo!
what are chord changes?
