Here's why Lake Tahoe doesn't freeze, even in the most bitter cold winters

  • A relentless winter has spilled over into a very cold and snowy start to spring for the High Sierra. March 2023 will likely end up colder than January, February and March for South Lake Tahoe, possibly setting a new record for the coldest March at that location. Despite the copious amounts of snow and persistent cold, Lake Tahoe remains sparkling blue and largely free of any ice cover, with the exception of marinas along the shore. Experts say it won't freeze this year and likely never has in human memory. That's because Lake Tahoe is deep, very deep. At 1,645 feet, it is the second-deepest lake in the United States. Meteorologist Heather Waldman reports.
