You could also add weights to the hem. That helps them hang nicely and ups the professional look in my opinion.

Just built a new house with soooo many windows. You saved me thousands of dollars. Just had the drapery company come out and give me a bid. 5 windows came to $5000 and those were just our necessary windows so neighbors couldn’t see in. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do. You saved me. My husband says thank you, too! So glad I came across your site. You give incredibly helpful advice.

We did this too in our house in Florida three years ago. As our ceilings are quite high and I wanted the drapes to go floor to ceiling, the length of the curtains they sell at IKEA USA wasn’t going to work (98 inches). Luckily I was living between Florida and Switzerland and so I ended up buying 26 pairs of Aina curtains at IKEA in Geneva as they are 300 cm or 118 inches. So we had to distribute curtains to all our family members and get them to bring them over in their suitcases when they visited us from Europe. My husband is a wiz on the sewing machine so he triple pleated all the curtains and sewed them together to fit our various window sizes, from triple sliders to single windows and everything in between. They look spectacular! Everyone gasps when they see what we did. It was a LOT of work, but it saved us literally ten thousand dollars (that was the quote we got from a local decorator for drapes that don’t even close). So I highly recommend this Ikea hack for sensational looking windows.

I bet she could easily do that! In my camper I redid the curtains, and the fabric I bought was so white it had a blue-ish undertone that I didn’t like. I soaked the fabric in coffee for a couple minutes and they turned the perfect neutral/warm shade of white! I then washed the fabric and they’ve help up well for over 3 years now

Someone else also suggested to open up the little loops with toothpicks which I really like. I also chalked every five loops beforehand so that it was easy for me to find them rather than counting constantly as I went along while feeling uncertain that I was getting the right loop.

I remember pleater hooks from the 1960s. What goes around comes around. To achieve blackout for sleeping, without spoiling the breezy look of the drapes, install blackout shades. Since your drapery rods are installed nice and high above the window frames, there's plenty of room to outside mount the shades just above the frames or just under the rods. When rolled up during the day, they'll be very unobtrusive.

I remember years ago, making curtains with pleater hooks. But I kind of remember them being pointed and you stabbed them through the fabric and there was a lot of measuring to be done! The IKEA curtains make that process much easier. It's a great look, but my husband does not like curtains or drapes. We live in a very wooded area and our house is on a hillside, so all the windows are high up. Privacy isn't an issue, so it doesn't bother me too much. The only room with curtains is the guest room because I think other people might not feel the same. I do think they add a bit of softness to the room. And 14 windows in a 1-bedroom apartment - crazy!

  • @yensid4294

I really prefer the look of pleated draperies too. For black out, pull down shades might be a good option for a bedroom instead of curtains especially if you have several smaller windows as opposed to one big picture window. They even sell DIY kits or you can find instructions online.

Looks great! And what a good tutorial. So I did the same thing/look with these curtains for my bedroom, but I actually hand sewed a little pleat on the front, between each tab. Then I just hung them up by the tabs on the back. Not too difficult, and they look great. The only drawback is that I can't open them wide enough to fully cover my window - so it's more for looks lol! But honestly I think would do the pleater hooks next time!

Bayina you look FANTASTIC! Haven't seen one of your videos in a couple of years, got away from decorating. I'm guessing a keto diet? Whatever it is, it's working. TY for showing me how this is done. I've seen these hooks on the old formal curtains and wondered how it worked. You could also put roll-down shades on the windows. That room will be hot if it's south or west-facing, you may need to consider outside awnings. Lovely room, I'd fill it with plants if it's big enough.

Everything comes back around, as a young kid in the '70s we had custom drapes not only on those hooks but the drapes opened/closed on a track n you just opened a whole bay at one time w this pulley system. It was quick until it jammed. I hated the formal look as a kid, but I surprisingly like it now. 😇

Now my only issue is that I decided to put them around a sliding glass door that is unfortunately not centered on my wall. So when I hung the drapes I decided to center the bar and put two panels on each side but now I think it looks wonky. Guessing I need to go back and just center it over the door and have a portion of the wall that has nothing on it… really which the door was centered on the wall. I love your bedframe, it looks lovely with the curtains you have just installed, I am so glad you decided not to sell it and brought it with you. Funnily enough, we needed to get some curtains for a small bay window in our master bedroom. We were quoted £480.00 and £590.00 for two separate fabric options (keep in mind that, the one type of fabric was polyester and the other was a polyester mix!!!), which I thought it was rather ridiculous, taking into consideration the quality of the fabric!!!
I ended up sourcing a brushed heavy linen and cotton mix fabric, alongside some high quality blackout lining material, handed them to a good tailor and 10 days later we had our lovely new bay window pleated curtains for half the price we had been quoted!

Wow, looks great. I would definitely like to try this in my bedroom. We have one large window we need to cover. Thanks for teaching us and all of the reasoning behind it. It turned out beautiful in your bedroom!!
