    On a recent Beauty Brains podcast (cosmetic chemists) they said makeup doesn’t actually have expiration dates in the US unless it contains sunscreen. The little opened jar with a number of months symbol is “period after opening” suggested by the manufacturer-after 6 months, 12 months, etc. they want you to go buy more. The Beauty Brains said just be aware of changes in the product-smell, texture, consistency especially for liquids and creams. They said powders have an indefinite shelf life if it’s for your own personal use and you store it correctly (not in a humid bathroom). Just throwing that into the mix. Also, Nordstrom has a cosmetics package recycling program-you can bring any type of hair, skin, makeup that you’re throwing away to their stores and they will recycle it correctly. Last-Michelle I still think you should keep the stuff you love but don’t use in a special drawer/trunk/shelf just for collecting!

      As soon as the texture or consistency changes in any product i bin them.
      Mascaras I’ve taken to buying mini’s so I actually use them up within 3 months. There’s only me who uses my products with clean brushes.
      I think she could have kept some of these products & been fine

      In my experience, old powder products - eyeshadows in particular because they go close to a very sensitive area like the eye - CAN, in fact expire and cause irritation and eye infections.
      I'm not saying go and throw away all your decade old eyeshadow palettes, you do you, but makeup should be a pleasure and if it's causing irritations or worse, should be thrown away.
      That being said, I think I'll keep my OG Naked palette forever for sentimental value, but it's been a while since I used it last and I'm not sure I'll do it again.

  • @genevieveve

    Michele, please do not feel pressure to get rid of limited edition products you really love just because we can't get them!
    We like to watch you enjoy your collection just as much as we like to be able to purchase what you recommend. Your channel is more than just a commercial for product recommendations.
    If you want to use limited edition products in your videos, maybe consider recommending something that might be somewhat similar that is still accessible so we can look into an option that's available but you still get to enjoy what you've spent money on and still love.

    • @foxwaffles
      @foxwaffles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maybe at the very least she could consider a "nostalgia corner" for LE products she loves but doesn't use as much anymore? Many of those products can still be beautiful and be a joy to display and have even if they're not being actively used. I have my own little sentimental "makeup museum" with a handful of old products that just mean a lot to me

      @@sydneyp7867 she also got rid of quite a lot and mentioned no other reason for decluttering other than it was limited edition.
      It would just be a shame if she felt like she couldn't have it in her collection simply because we can't buy it. My comment was not made because I didn't watch the video, it was a genuine comment out of kindness.

    Eye doctor here. It was most likely a mascara or liner that caused the infection. Powders last years. ❤ Glad you are taking care of your eyes!

  • @therealdonnawagner
    @therealdonnawagner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    Considering how little you used most of these things (especially the powder products) , it's probably statistically impossible for you to get an infection from them unless your hands were just incredibly gross every time you touched them (which I doubt). Powder (dry) environments inhibit bacterial and fungal growth. IF it was her makeup (which her doctor couldn't confirm), Tati likely got an eye infection from cream products like eyeliner or mascara, which she admitted she did not replace as often as is recommended (and should be more often if they are used frequently, especially if she was sick at any time using them). You're free to do what you like, but please make sure you understand fully what Tati was likely dealing with and how it relates to your own collection before feeling pressure to mass declutter.

    • @elainebines6803
      @elainebines6803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mascara should be replaced every six weeks and if we were to be really on top of it, a mascara for each eye 🤔👁️

    • @Choree305
      @Choree305 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Many of the products we try at Sephora etc are “old”. They’re full of chemicals. They don’t expire just bc time has passed especially in an air conditioned house and never being touched.

    • @teacheschem
      @teacheschem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly- even with the mascara the expiration date of not a quick as one would think. One of coworkers used a mascara once a year for 18 years. Delighted in torturing me with the grossness of that- and nothing happened to her eyes!

    • @therealdonnawagner
      @therealdonnawagner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teacheschem That is true, though I will say it's much more subjective than with powders because liquids do encourage growth of bacteria and fungi. So, it really depends on what each person's own body flora is like (are the good bacteria and yeast killing off bad ones), how much of that got into the product (were good decanting practices used whenever possible, were clean hands and brushes used, how clean was the face when anything like applicators came in contact with it), how often is the product used and how well was it balanced in the first place with ingredients that limit growth of germs, etc...
      Martha Stewart literally said on a makeup video that she's used the same liquid eyeliner for, I think, 15+ years (they don't even make it anymore), and she just keeps adding water to it when it dries out. 😂 I've never seen her with any eye infections and she's clearly never dealt with anything that made her want to stop using that product. There are also famous makeup artists that have actively used makeup products on multiple people that haven't been manufactured for an entire generation without incident, not using a new one each time but using the same one they've carried in their kit because it's a favorite. I think that's where people have to really know themselves and know the products they're using in order to know where to draw that line. The truth is the stated expiration dates are to protect the manufacturers from lawsuits where people didn't take care to pay attention to such things, but a healthy understanding of how germs grow and pass from one thing to another goes a long way to helping know how to properly manage things like a makeup collection.

      If used for personal use only I don’t think anything needs to be disposed of. If we have an infection of any kind we know it and that is the time to dispose of anything which could be suspected as the cause…

  • @katherinechung4345
    @katherinechung4345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    Going forward, it might be helpful to put the month and year on the bottom of each of your products so that you don't have to guess when the product came out. I do that with my mascara so that I'm really good about tossing at the 3 month mark (or sooner). I use a label maker because permanent marker still manages to rub off over time.

    I’m a veterinarian and before computers, we made inventory control easy by buying small colored sticker dots, and each item got a sticker coded to the month. Didn’t have to write anything, the color told you when it expired (or if you prefer, when it was bought). Easy to slap them on when the product arrived. Eliminated having expired products on the shelf.

    That was a BEAST of a declutter! 😮I don’t think I could be that ruthless, but then again, I don’t have the magnitude of products coming in that you do.
    I just go by ‘look and smell’ as a basis for decluttering.
    Perhaps you should dedicate one of your new drawers to declutter. When you receive a product that you don’t like, not your colors, or didn’t perform, it can go straight into that drawer. Might make things a little easier.
    I’m 73. I could be reincarnated three times and never use all my makeup!😳😂🤣

    Sharpening pencils, if they’re encased in wood and not crumbly, them cleans off anything growing.

It is so beloved but I think it's very true that there is not a whole lot of contrast to it! I feel like we all need to be a bit more brutal when it comes to considering buying new stuff. Yes most things are really nice but when it comes down to it, the distilled review really says it all.

    I had no idea how many items you had but I was amazed by your collection of palettes. I noticed that a lot of brands like Dior and Pat McGrath release similar color stories in similar depths which is interesting because I feel like they could release single shadows of their most popular shades and make more that way… then again, people love palettes so if they include a tone that someone likes they’ll want to collect that, too. Also, it seems like you have a system in place but it might help to organize and inventory each drawer and estimate when items were opened to help figure out if something is expired. I have the same issue with my collection so I am going to start doing this because I used an old foundation and had terrible irritation around my jaw and now my skin is red and flaking - been a week and the redness has subsided a little but since hurts to wash my face. Going to declutter starting tonight and refresh as sales start.

    Well, I guess I can add my two penny's to the big bucks being tossed, which rarely is giving on any social media platform. I understand everyone's point of view I have read in both declutter videos. I am new to watching makeup review tutorials. I am turning 65 in the beginning of the year. I needed help with navigating the new makeup products and applications after 20 years of wearing the same style. The education I received from several YTer's is very valuable. I am a portrait artist, color is my stock and trade. I am also drawn to the best products in both realms, artistry and makeup. Two months of intense study and sample collection have given me excellent choices for purchasing a whole face from skin care and makeup products, to new ideas on how to manage my grey hair. I have a closet as large as a child's bedroom filled with every conceivable way to make visual art. I have my own studio filled with the finest equipment. So my collections of premium paint, brushes, and supports may seem a bit over the top to most artists especially being I don't create for a $$$$ living. I give most of what I do away. My point is life is for living. We need to be good steward's of our world. This has a different meaning to everyone. I don't understand why everyone is not entitled to there own interpretation of that stewardship. The difference in my over abundance and Michelle's she WORKS for her products and is GIVEN many of the products for the promotion of said product along with an honest opinion. I WORKED my whole life to get to 65 to have whatever my bank account would allow me to enjoy. I will not be on YT much longer as it will have given me what I needed. This is what we are all searching for....a fulfillment what ever that may be. I just dipped into this arena to feel the best about me leaving this world as I did coming into it.

    Michele - if I were you having space at home to store makeup, I will make sure I have a cabinet designated for Archive makeup say old yet precious Natasha and Pat palettes / limited edition ones! So you can just take them out to admire and play swatches when you want to but not using on your eyes! ♥️

    Thanks so much for listing your nail polish. Next time I want to do something subtle and this color, Put it in Neutral, is gorgeous on your nails so hopefully I can do it justice. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    This was so inspiring ! I wonder if a video idea might be to actually repurchase old favourites. I’ve seen the hypothetical’ what I would replace…’ videos from influencers, but I’d be very interested in watching an actual ‘I just repurchased’ video. It would inspire us to declutter our own dangerously expired makeup too!

    I'm so very proud of you, I know how hard it can be especially when you have a complete collection, your eyes and skin thank you. I wore beige mitzvah today and I've had it 3 weeks and yours did not look right and I had it pauled on my 50" TV. So happy you did that. The good thing is, (I get it, right there is no good thing for you except favorites are gone) but, you will be able to see what you have more easily and not miss anything anymore, or forget you had something because it was buried. My hat off to you Madame. As an asside, if you would like the tiniest bit of help with some of the Pronounciations (french) I would very happily love to help you. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😘💖😘💖😘💖

    The Chanel lip and cheek, gone just like that. 😥 None of these products even looked touched. Not even used or loved or known intimately. Just discarded.

    Yes not getting rid of some of those Pat McGrath’s was an issue….. with each pallet you would say “this didn’t work for me… This didn’t work for me….” and then put them back😁.
    Why do we feel like it’s a crime getting rid of our Pat McGrath pallets?
    In all honesty it’s very rare that I reach for any of my motherships… except one that I will use the orange/copper special shade.. it’s so beautiful especially for the fall..
    You did really well considering you’ve gone through things recently… you have a magnificent Tom Ford quad collection👏👏👏👏.

    Michelle you did a great job decluttering. It must be so hard with so much you love but just has to go. Thank you for sharing the process. I've really enjoyed watching the declutter series. It reminds me to do the same. My collection of makeup is no where near yours but it still needs to be managed. Also I don't want you or anyone else to get an eye infection either!
