    Avoid lifeless black and white photo edits by following this approach. It's easy to create strong black and white photos in Luminar NEO but you must follow the right conversion method. That's what I'll share with you in this photo editing tutorial. The concepts and techniques shown here are applicable to ALL genres of photography not just portraits. So if you want to learn how to make better black and white photos then follow along this demonstration with your own photo. I hope you'll be making stunning black and white photos in no time!
    A lot of what we cover is relevant to Luminar AI also (bit.ly/Lum-AI), however it's the application of tools numerous times where Luminar NEO really shines, and that's something you can't do in Luminar AI. In this case though I would recommend using the local adjustment tools in Luminar AI in a similar way to re-applying tools in NEO.
    Personally I love editing black and white photos, and I hope this video helps you to start creating better monochrome, black and white photo conversions.

    Very helpful video, Anthony. Helping to make Neo feel like a serious editing tool. I don't do portraits so, yes, showing how to do a b&w edit on a landscape or urban shot would be really interesting.

    It s always a pleasure to learn with you about the capabilities of this tool which are really large. Honnestly -and even before the application of the layers- I think we are more and more going far from photography and more and more near art … which is not a bad criticism :)… and we are free to stop where we want. Big big job here and thx for that.

    The black and white is quite a transformation from the original colour and looks really good. It was quite a bit of work to get there. As for the layers, they are not what most people
    understand as true layers. They are at the moment just textures or images you can add. The only use I've made of layers is to add a PNG signature image to use as a watermark.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken, I'll see if I can put a video together on layers. At first glance they may seem like some form of augmented texture tool but I have managed to utilise them in other creative ways...

    I learn so much from your tutorials, Anthony. Been following and learning from Lum 4. Just wondering why not to apply curves in the Develop Raw edit? Thanks and cheers

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. How much contrast is in a file is a processing decision that, in my workflow, comes closer to the end. If I go too hard with a contrast curve early on then I'm limiting my dynamic range in the rest of the process. I like to start with basic white and black point movements, shifts in shadows and highlights and then visit curves later to set my final look.

    I'm new to Neo and asking if you see that I am missing something in my workflow that is obvious to you. I'm working with RAW scans of old B&W negs using a Lumix G95 with a 30mm Macro. So starting in Develop RAW I go first to curves and invert the negative image to a positive. Then I adjust the positive image in Develop Raw as best I can. I've been using Pixelmator and Neo obviously has all those AI tools you just used in this video which should allow me to improve my old shots with say, underexposed faces as you worked with in your example. I have been just desaturating the scans but I could rescan them with the camera set to monochrome to eliminate that step. It doesn't seem to flatten the image. You seem to think similarly to me as you edit so I find your videos very helpful. Thanks from Perth.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lorenz. Sounds good to me. As your originals are black and white, desaturating your scans is fine. Sounds like you've got yourself a fun project there!

    nice job on the good facial view and location of the near eye. Only thing that I would have liked to have see is a landscape version of the frame from camera to allow for more room to look to than looking from. I also thought that maybe a bit more detail in the highlights of the face in the pure B/W image would have been nice so as to provide skin texture. Some of that came back when adding the textures. As usual, an most enjoyable tutorial. Oh, maybe someone that does videos could also include in their initial comments a .rtf file of the Keyboard shortcuts for NEO in their initial comments in text. TIA

      Hi Phlotographer. Thanks. I noticed Skylum released on the Luminar Insiders website a page with all the current keyboard shortcuts. Just the usual stuff tbh. I'm sure more will be added though as there are a few that aren't there that I'd love to see.

    I watch most of your video and have been using Skylum products since the launch of Luminar 4. In my normal workflow I use Luminar Neo as a plugin to Lightroom. It is easy to open an image from Lightroom in Neo but I can't figure out how to open the image as RAW. It always changes the format to tif. I want to use the Develop module on the RAW image as you suggest so can you explain how I can set this up?
    Thank you

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. Because you're using it as a plugin envoked from LR it's not going to let you mess with the raw file that way because LR and Neo "talk" to the file in a different way and so you'd end up with conflicting editing instructions on the same raw file, hence why LR creates a new file for editing. If you want to work raw in NEO, you'll have to start there and then bring your edit into LR afterwards.

    • @AnthonyTurnham

      You should be fine with a good tiff file. 16bit with good res and you won't be at much of a disadvantage tbh. Once we move away from the initial develop raw tool in Neo, at this point it's not working on the raw data set anyway, it's treating the photo as if it were a 16bit raster file like a tiff.
