I watched MASH as a child with my father who never talked about his time in the service. It wasn't till after he passed and I had to go through his belongings that I made the connection that all those hours we shared watching the show together might have been a way to say things he couldn't say.
My dad was grew up as the son of an American diplomat in Nepal in 1963. My grandfather ran USAID there and they had one of these helicopters. They actually used it to rescue some climbers with frostbite from base camp. An absolute classic.
Took me about 1-1/2 hrs to watch this video. 10 min in I paused this video to watch the final episode of MASH, before watching the rest here. Bittersweet. But your video made me smile again.
I worked in gamedev in LA for 14 years - lived less than 10 min from Malibu Creek SP and used to MTB up to the MASH site all the time. Super cool area!
OMG I didn't know you served in the British military! Huge respect from your most dedicated fan from the National Guard of Ukraine! 🇬🇧🇺🇦 P.S. MASH rocks!
Great memories - I loved that show, as did a good friend of mine. We actually hiked out to the filming site, although we took a different route than you to get there. Since we were both motorcycle riders we took our bikes along the coast up to Malibu, and then rode up the canyon to get to the park. We did make a critical error and forgot to take water with us, not realizing how far into the canyon the site actually was. It would have been a lot easier if we had a helicopter...
I'm glad someone did this scenery. I was going to do it eventually......... I did a reconstruction flight of the titles and shared it on Reddit when the Bell first came out, it was very popular. The valley you were flying south through, just south of the T shape lake is where the titles start with 2 helis flying side by side. If you carry on through the valley and turn right you are on the right flightpath.
Wow, you did really well flying the Bell with a yoke! Although I was more than a bit afraid you would hit a hill or two while looking at the map ;) The sim's scenery in this area looks absolutely amazing, and as you said helicopters are the best way to really appreciate and enjoy this. Thank you for another very entertaining and informative video!
What I didn't know until recently is that helicopters were first used in combat search-and-rescue in 1944 - in WWII Burma (Myanmar today). Absolutely mindblowing.
@@AvAngel Ahh I never noticed, must check it out. Usually you're the influence on my buying decisions, but it was so long ago I hadn't discovered you yet - flying blind 😂 but it definitely turned out to be a worthwhile purchase!

Flyinside really did a great job with the 47G-2, and they're not done with it yet. They're working on a floats version too. I hope sometime they look at doing the larger cabin 47G-3 or later, and for the true M*A*S*H model 47, the -D, which was the model that served in Korea and was used to film the TV series. For those who haven't seen it, here's the sole surviving Bell 47D actually used in the TV show: th-cam.com/video/AnHmEs3TOq4/w-d-xo.html Note the single lower-profile fuel tank on the -D compared to the big "saddle bag" style tanks on the G.
I’ve flown airplanes and helicopters for a long time in real life and on the sim. I fly everything in the Sim with a stick. There’s no way in hell I could successfully fly a helicopter with a yoke!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It's funny because we always joke in America about how the "English Countryside" in American movies always looks like California. But those hills look a LOT like North Korea, especially in the sim, just warmer and with more trees. Still, with Omicron raging, I'm not going anywhere so you're tempting me to try to learn how to fly helicopters in the sim...
Incoming wounded! All medical personnel report to the chopper pad! ;) Yes, I started humming the theme song as your approached the compound. M.A.S.H. is still one of my all time fave shows. I've watched the whole series at least 10 times over the years. The finale is the best finale to any TV show ever, IMO.
You did a good job on the video it’s fun to watch videos that you make, and I think there’s a few things that could cause some o my goodness moments while flying a helicopter!
As a huge rotorhead I thought your flying was just fine! Flying with a yoke has to be pretty unintuitive, so nice work! I've done a few long-ish trips in the 47 and it really is nice to fly. Especially once I discovered that the trim bindings work so I don't have to fight my centering spring the whole time. Might be time to take it out again soon.
That was a fun, scenic, nostalgic video. The look of the mountains, the tents with the red cross markings seen from the air, the sound off the Bell helicopter; there it was - M.AS.H. From 30 years ago. Nicely done. (BTW. Was it your voice I heard on a older video, using the name fire something?)
@@AvAngel So I looked for that channel and watched a couple of videos, as you do ... The gaming videos aren't the style of games I like but the others ... I was not expecting that ! Especially one of the answers in the top 10 ! :-)
Sorry, what is the name of that British show? Love British SitComs. Wow! Flying a chopper with a control wheel! Not sure I could pull that off. Of course I can't simultaneously pat my head and rub my tummy either.
Another great video, and very enjoyable! Can I ask, can the helicopter by controlled by my Velocity Yoke system?? Maybe an explanation video on how you control her? Regards from UK!
Throttle for collective, yoke for cyclic exactly as one would expect, just a little unusual at first but possible, I’m too lazy to swap controls! Yeah any flight control system will work, flightsim always recognised the throttle as the collective in choppers
I can't get the collective to work anymore in this model. I had flown it around before having collective assigned to the throttle, but it no longer works now. I didn't change anything since the last time I flew it. There is no assignment in MSFS specifically for collective that I have found. Also, what I did actually assign for throttle does rotate the throttle on the collective handle visually in the sim, but it doesn't seem to actually change anything. I'm guessing a recent update broke this module.
No, as I’m flying it now, reset your throttle assignment, it uses throttle yes and there is no collective as helicopters aren’t supported yet, it’s a work around everyone’s using, I believe it’s also overall throttle too not just engine one
@@AvAngel My throttle works fine in other aircraft. I did try resetting it though which made no difference. I found using the F2 and F3 keys does move the collective, but as soon as I touch my throttle, it jumps the collective all the way down and it sticks there. I've been in the aviation industry forever, and have heard all of the snarky comments about helicopters, for example, they are thousands of parts flying in close formation, helicopters don't fly, they beat the air into submission, etc. and I have to admit, I've never really liked helicopters myself, BUT, after seeing your video and realizing how perfect this helicopter is as a sightseeing platform in MSFS 2020, I'm afraid I'm going to have to visit the in-store marketplace and get it now. Awesome idea for a video. I grew up with MASH and still watch it.
They've nailed the iconic sound of the Bell 47. I might have to pick this one up.
We need that MASH music lol I remember it because I would change the channel at the start as a kid lol. Nice little flight great scenery indeed!
M*A*S*H lasted longer than the war. Great show.
