    A few years ago I bought a pair of 38mm SuperTeam wheels off of Amazon. I had been waiting and watching and was able to buy these for $275. 10,000 miles later they're still in really great shape, still extremely true, and I'm very happy with them. You can't buy a decent pair of aluminum wheels for that price. I will gladly buy another pair of these wheels when the time comes and use the old wheels on my trainer bike. There is absolutely no reason to spend thousands of dollars on wheels, or for that matter, on any branded bike part. Do your research, find a company that provides great customer service and save yourself a ton of money.

      Absolutely lovely to hear, I completely agree that Superteams are pretty much the cost of a mid-tier aluminum wheelset. When you look at it that way, really really hard to fault for the value that it offers appreciate the insights

    I treated myself back in December, and bought the 50MM through EBay same seller Princesses 123, have over 600 miles on them and they roll Beautiful with my Vittoria Corsa Control. No complaints , I took them to my local bike shop to make sure the wheels are trued . After the inspection they were straight as an arrow. Love them ! What made me purchased them, I have a cycling buddy who purchased the Super Wheels 5 years ago and had no issues , he also weighed 250 lbs, so I decided to give it a try. For $340 later I’m a happy camper !

    I build bikes during COVID. So far, I have purchased SIX sets of SuperTeam wheels - road bike, gravel bike and mountain bike. I have had wheels from SuperTeam that are rim brake and disc brake. I would agree that the basalt braking strip has its weaknesses. With disc brakes, despite the extra weight, these wheels are superb.

    • @vittoriochiu8181
      @vittoriochiu8181  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fantastic to hear, and on the basalt rim track it's certainly not perfect but not any worse than other brand offerings. Personally, I'm a rim brake believer for road riding - skinny tires, lightweight, tarmac, the power of discs aren't essential but I definitely understand the benefits there

    • @larrygross1248
      @larrygross1248 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vittoriochiu8181 Agreed - the basalt strip is the Achilles heel for all wheel brands that I've seen. I don't put disc brakes on road bikes, but not really because of weight. I use mostly old Cannondale frames that were restored. There's no clean method to attach disc brakes to these bikes, which were designed for rim brakes. (You can use an adapter, but I've tried many different adapters and found all of them to be sketchy).

    • @vittoriochiu8181
      @vittoriochiu8181  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@larrygross1248 Totally, it's simply a flaw in the rim-brake design itself but then again, if you're not descending mountains every weekend and/or you're not considered a heavy rider, I've rarely seen a failure on the rim track myself - glad to see you're using old frames, always better to upcycle than new (in my opinion)

    • @larrygross1248
      @larrygross1248 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vittoriochiu8181 These old Cannondale frames are awesome. With a good painting and some clearcoat, they're good as new - all with frames that are 25 to 35 years old. Throw on a carbon fork and handlebars with some Super Team wheels, and you're looking at an 18-lb road bike (8.2 kg) that rides better than when Cannondale made it.

    Vittorio, great review! I purchased a set for myself and for my wife. At 20 m.p.h. and above there is a noticeable difference in holding speed. Below that I can't tell much difference at all. Your review highlighted the pros and cons very well! So, if cruising around at 20 m.p.h. and above is "your thing" these wheels work. If getting to that speed is a stretch upgrade to a good set of aluminum wheels to save weight on the climbs.

  • @willishuang3660
    @willishuang3660 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have this wheelset and agree with this review. The wheels themselves are high quality, and I have had zero problems with them. The main caveat which isn't the fault of the wheel, is the carbon/basalt brake rim which is standard for most carbon wheels - you will notice a significantly longer braking distance compared to an alloy brake rim, even with Swissstop pads. I have these as an alternate wheelset to my $6500+ superbike TT and it's super fast and so good-looking that I actually get compliments from other riders quite regularly (nice wheels!) - I doubt they know these are only $380! I'm still shocked as to how good these wheels are. Note they DO make an alloy-brake model (recommended if you ride mostly mountains) so you can get that if you want to avoid the carbon brake issue altogether.

    • @vittoriochiu8181
      @vittoriochiu8181  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really glad to hear you have the same impressions, really great wheelset - no different from any other name brand but also shares the inherent faults of a carbon rim brake wheel. Thanks for sharing your experience!! Might consider switching to softer pads down the line

  • @k9taxi

    I purchased the rim brake model with basalt braking surface. The braking surfaces lasted about 600 km and were toast after that. Since they were all but worthless at that point, I cut them in half to check the QC of the rim. The carbon layup looked neat, clean and consistent. When I purchased a disc brake frame I did not hesitate to buy another set for the new bike. I would never again buy these wheels for a caliper brake setup but highly recommend them for disc setup. And yes, I did use carbon specific brake pads on the first set. YMMV

    • @vittoriochiu8181
      @vittoriochiu8181  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate the feedback k9, my rim brake model has been going strong as an update on my end - still using the stock brake pads which are a really hard compound. Still going strong and I've checked the surface, looks about new. However, I think rider weight makes a big difference, I'm probably on the 'underweight' side so that may be potentially why they're not toasted yet. Happy to hear disc brakes are going strong, congrats on the purchase and happy riding :)

    I have 2 sets of carbon wheels, one of these is a Superteam, 88mm front and back on my fixed gear (used as a road bike on flats), bought one and a half years ago. I have no problems so far, still stiff, aligned, and fast. Deep wheels are not the best choice for lightweight riders in windy conditions, the instability can be partially solved with the front tire being narrower than the wheel. That's why the wider/ toroidal wheels are better, my other wheelset is 28mm wide with 25mm tires. In my Superteam front wheel (25mm wide) I use a 23mm tire. About the brake experience, the original carbon brake pads are terrible, I bought a Shimano one, but you can buy it from any other big company, and it's a big inexpensive upgrade. Ride safe bro!

    2.5 years of use and they are a great buy. I recommend using Swiss Stop Black Prince brake pads. They last pretty long, brake much better than what came with the wheels and most importantly, they brake much cooler.

      Agreed, can really benefit from a set of aftermarket brake pads - for my preference I'd prefer a bit of a harder pad as they don't melt away as quickly, but can't go wrong with swissstop overall.

    My main reason for seeking a set of 45-55mm deep carbon wheels IS EXACTLY that carbon 'whoosh-roar' that they make when rolling along in a big gear.
    It is a self-motivating stimulus to keep improving, and riding even faster yet (sort of like the scrubbing sound that the old Clement Criterium Super Seta Extra green label tubular tires made against the road when one jumped, or started a sprint).
    YES, I will admit that I like the 'look' as well, but that 'sound' is just a must have for me.
    The problem is that there are basically NO narrow internal, or external width carbon wheels in existence anymore, which are all that will work with my ancient Reynolds Ouzo fork, '01 vintage Campy Record 10 calipers, or '01 vintage Merlin Road frame's narrow chainstay clearance at the bottom bracket (let alone ones with an alloy braking surface like the Mavic Cosmic Carbones which I HATE myself for selling many years ago!). :( :(

    Great looking wheels. I’ve been researching on the same topic, and something I want to share that’s not mentioned by many online reviewers - at the top of the food chain, where quality and tight metrics are part of the production process, there will be a yield, for the best wheels. And for the rejected (yield loss), generally they can be binned to different categories, like total scrap, grade A, B, C, etc. in order to save overall production cost, the lower grade products are sold to lower tier resellers/markets.
    Another factor is reused of older tooling (molds), from previous generations of design, etc. once amortized, they can continue to make wheels at lower cost. This is unlikely to be coming from the top wheel makers, because they improve their design and keep producing new wheels with new tooling. Other factories may procure older tools to make wheels at lower cost.

    What a great video! I'm glad that there is someone who's reviewing Superteam. My experience has been great. I think I was corresponding with Candy too.
    I bought a pair of 3 spokes from them for my TT/triathlon bike. Since I got a Ron rear disc I've been using only for the front. It's been very pleasant experience with it. I used Campagnolo red brake pads and stop very well even in the rain. I am talking about an inbuilt TT which tends to be quite useless normally. The handling is way better than my almost 10 year old Fulcrum 80 mm deep rims. It's quite stable even with side wind. How aerodynamic is it? It really depends on how fast we ride, but I have been to a couple of Ironman 70.3 world championships in recent years for my age group. I'd say if you cruse at around 40 km/h or slightly faster, I'd highly recommend it. Due to it's stability my average speed goes up because I can keep my aero position way longer. I have shown the wheels in my channel, but haven't done a specific review video, but maybe I should do one...

    I was looking at a used bike that came with some, but ultimately decided against it. It seems like form you experience that they’d most likely work well for me; I’m a similar weight to you. However, I was was able to get a set of used Zipp alloy wheels for about the same price. They’re a similar weight to the Superteam 50mm, but they’re 30mm. Zipp claims though that they’re able to mimic the aero profile of larger rims. Who knows what I’d be better off with, but I like the peace of mind of having alloy and having a legit Zipp logo on my rims.

    • @vittoriochiu8181
      @vittoriochiu8181  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely don't blame you, genuine Zipps are a fantastic option as well - honestly, as non-pro riders who cares ride what you want it's gonna make a night and day difference between the two... If you ever want a brand new option Superteams are just a safe bet, but in the used market everything opens up. Congrats on your wheels have fun!

    I hate to say it as it will probably invalidate the 2 year warranty. But these wheels are cheap enough for me to factor in some replacement bearings for the hubs before Ive even had them on the bike providing they take regular cartridge bearings. replace whatever cheap bearings they use from the factory with double sealed Enduro or any SKF, NTN, Koyo bearings.
    as for the GCN stuff. I take their results with a big grain of salt because wind tunnels dont reflect real world usage where wind can be coming at you from any and every direction and not just head on.
    If it survives past the 2 year warranty period, you've got a decent foundation for a rebuild.... Sapim CX-XRay spokes and a better hub of your choosing Bitex/DT Swiss - whatever you want.

    I only wish the major brands would take notice of how many people are actually buying these lower priced wheelsets and how many sales they are missing out on because of their greed. I custom built my carbon wheels and I couldn't find one carbon rim for under $400 each here in the US. I would bet that the company I bought my rims from (Boyd) didn't pay more than $30 for the rim that was obviously sourced from China or Taiwan. I would have purchased my rims from China if I could have found the ones I wanted but they were sold out at the time.

      Completely agree with this, but at the same time I understand branding isn't cheap, R&D beyond a base mold isn't cheap, sponsoring riders isn't cheap so in a way, it does add up so I think there's a clientele for $, $$ and $$$. Some people are more than willing to pay a lot more for a little gain, and I think that's completely fair for those products to serve that market as well appreciate your thoughts on that

      @wasupwitdat1mofiki94 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vittoriochiu8181 You said the right thing there "pay a lot more for little gain". There would be no noticeable difference between the base mold and a more customized layup. The aero benefits come from the size and shape of the rim. When it comes to quality of the hubs that's really debatable because I have used a lot of different hubs in my years and a lot of the hubs people claim to be the best are not really IMO. At any rate it is nice to see this offering at such a good price, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

      That's a good question - I would say riding both aluminium wheels and carbon ones, whether Superteam or comparable, are more comfortable for sure it provides dampening qualities just like a carbon frame vs aluminium frame. Can't go wrong with either, but for my money I'd pick carbon especially if you want a deeper wheelset (30mm+), a deep section aluminium wheel is no good as they're incredibly heavy

My stock rims are 22.5 external and internal must be like around 19, have to remove the tire to measure. You stated external but wondering if this was a goof ? Seems 25mm internal would be too wide on the outside and would be very tight clearance on my road bike fork.. I would go for 25mm external for sure. Please clarify :- ) Thanks ! I mean as in riders weight?

    • @vittoriochiu8181

      There is a rider limit as with all carbon wheels, but it's in the vicinity of... over 200 lbs - for the most part everyone can ride carbon but heavier riders do see to have more issues with maintenance/failures :)

      20 km/h is about the speed you need to hold for the wheelset to make any difference - very doable on a road bike ;)

    I'm close to 200/196 ponds.

      Yes, 130 pounds is correct - I don't suspect you'll have issues at 200 pounds, but I would recommend looking at reviews from riders with similar weights first

    Barely if any lighter,lose braking power,not necessarily any faster,squirrly in wind,hubs not sealed well,................but they get a job done?................it sounds like even at 400.00 your not getting much except looks.

    • @vittoriochiu8181
      @vittoriochiu8181  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally get that, the main advantage compared to a nice set of aluminums is really the looks, but I can say the hubs have been rock solid 'til now - pretty confident to say that barely of the carbon wheels will give you a significant boost in km/h as most wind tunnel/real world tests show... whether you find a 1-2 kmh worth the expense that's up to you but as a carbon wheelset for ~$400, I still stand by the fact that it's good value IF you want carbons

      @reginaldscot165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct, in my shop I have seen the quality of Super team wheels and I would not waste my own money on them. You can get a DT Swiss wheel in aluminium for that price with DT Swiss quality hubs and they are lighter, stronger, safer and stop better. From my experience looking at the misfortunes of customers I would say never buy any carbon wheels for less than 1k. "Buy cheap buy twice" as my dad always used to say.

    • @g33m33
      @g33m33 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aerodynamics are factual. If you are a rider that has no problem going +40kph any deep section wheel will make a big difference in speed. About the weight. If you compare the weight with high quality brand, theses wheels weight is not bad at all, not the lightest but descent. Aluminum deep section wheels, with the amount of material needed, would weight a ton so there IS a weight advantage if you compare.

      Hard to say exactly/who's working on the wheelsets but from what I know their reputation is strong enough I'd trust that skilled labour is needed to create these products

    cheap (and not light), that's why I personally wouldn't want them. but if someone bought a pair and made them work for themselves long term, more power to 'em.

      Completely agree, however I'd be lying if they're anymore heavier than the competition - give or take from a name brand it's probably 100g difference been using them multiple times a week on all conditions still running fine

      Absolutely not, I apologize if you interpreted my answer wrongly - I personally don't know about the working conditions or processes to get their cost of goods low. That's something that's related to the company's practices, and I have no issues admitting that the reasoning for their pricing could or could not be potentially unethical
