    This thing is great as a pair of golden ears too. 1) Put it on whatever source 2) listen if it improves things, if it does; 3) try and figure out why and learn to apply it without Gullfoss. That way you don't outsource your skills to an automated unit and get lazy.
    I've noticed that when you EQ/compress the source, trying to bring it close to what Gullfoss does, there's a point where adding it doesn't make something better anymore.

    Dude there's actually one other important feature you didn't cover: the high pass and low pass filter lines that you can drag in from the sides so that you can tell the plugin not to mess with the upper and lower extremities. I find that useful because I like what Recover is doing in the low end but my mix didn't need it in the high end, so I just drag that low pass over a little bit and bam.

    Even if you're worried about falling into some kind of preset box, you could look at what Gullfoss does to a song to learn new and better ways to clean things up; then you could do the same things manually while adding your own personal touch. Still a super useful plugin, even if you don't just throw it on there straight-up.

I'm branching more and more into the production and mixing side to add more real flavor back to music thanks to using a lot of YOUR techniques. I'm a big fan of Fabfilter plugins for mixing and mastering and recently discovered that using a Hughes and Kettner GM36 directly to a UA 6176 has offered the sweetest tones I've EVER heard out of my system. I'd really love to hear some opinions on the 6176 and perhaps this method of recording instruments/vocals.

    The side chain feature would be used similarly to Soothe 2. I've used a more basic process for making room for vocals against guitars. By sending the guitars to 2 busses and adding a cross over around 1K then side chain compressing the top end of the guitars by a couple DB of reduction only when the vocals come in allowed more clarity in the vocals. It's a lot more routing than using a smart EQ but it had a similar effect. My process also doesn't have the exact negative notching for a more natural sound.

    I do the same thing on my master track, but using multiple instances of the free TDR Nova, targeting the sides or the mid channels (high end for the sides, bass and mids on the mid channel). But using Gullfoss would probably save you a lot of CPU and will make your chain look much cleaner, and sound cleaner too since it looks like it uses 50 bands at once. With TDR nova, you're stuck with 4 bands per instance.

    • @dooshnukem32
      @dooshnukem32 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ^this.
      Purposely clipping (distorting) drum transients is a great way to get some extra perceived loudness or oomph out of the drums without having to clamp down so hard with compression or limiting. Many DAWs come with a plugin that will let you clip those transients without slamming the channel (Soft Clipper in Cubase, for instance). Works wonders for bringing out more of the drum tones as well since compression/limiting won't be crushing the overall output as much.

    there are more and more of these "auto EQ's" cropping up eg Izotope Sculptur, TB Pro Audio DSEQ, Oeksound Soothe - does this start to replace the role of the engineer? Are we dumbing down the mix process?

    • @TheRealBibwitHarte
      @TheRealBibwitHarte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technology is inevitably going to improve, so you can adjust to the times or be left in the past. It's definitely getting easier to be an engineer (which has negative consequences for the industry) but when you think about it objectively, making a skill more consumer friendly for average people to use is awesome, especially as most musos are broke anyway. I use Gulfoss on every mix I do and tbh it's not incredible - if there's unwanted noise it'll bring it up in the high frequencies and it's subtle improvements at best. The same can be said for iZotope auto mastering as well. It actually makes my workflow faster and better, so for now AI is in the hands of engineers who already know how to use the tools. In the long run, we may be replaced, but also there may be new and exciting ways our careers can unfold. Having said that, automation is very scary and is going to cause massive structural economic problems, but that's more of a Capitalist problem than an EQ thing!

    • @WRMCHNC
      @WRMCHNC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheRealBibwitHarte It's not about being left in the past, it's about whether or not you consider yourself a *true* engineer or someone who uses presets and auto solutions.
      The real difference will be when you *don't* have those tools at your disposal (working in someone else's studio etc) and you're asked to mix something.
      Not sure why people assume "most musos are broke", most I know hold down jobs to pay for their hobbies / interests. Can't buy new gear without cash.
      Not sure what the comment about Capitalism was related to, certainly not this discussion, let's leave the political stuff to politicians instead of blatantly showing a bias ;)

    • @TheRealBibwitHarte
      @TheRealBibwitHarte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WRMCHNC Don't think there's any bias in saying that our current economic landscape (globalised, neoliberal capitalist) is geared around profit maximisation, and as AI gets better and replaces huge swathes of the job market as its saves employers labour costs we're in for huge structural, economic challenges. CGP Grey has a great video called "Humans Need Not Apply" which shows that although automation creates new jobs, the vast majority of the biggest industries (and employers) in the world have existed for hundreds of years are at risk of automation. You can still be right wing and agree with this - this is an objectively big problem.
      Either way, if you're used to AI/plugins that do everything for you and don't understand the difference between opto and fet compressors, or how to use parallel compression or something, then when you don't have your easy tools lying around like Gullfoss, you're probably in trouble. I agree with you there. I also think there's inherent merit in understanding the fundamental principles behind music production - I know that my understanding of acoustics and rough engineering knowledge has improved me as an engineer. I also agree in the sense that the best engineers who make the best mixes are never going to rely 100% on AI. There is a human element to mixing and that creativity and nuance is important. You may be right that musos do have jobs, but the vast majority don't live on music alone. And lots of people who make music are young and financially struggling. There's also a difference between able to survive and buy a nice bit of gear every now and then vs having a dedicated mixing room in your house with custom built bass traps, NS10s, Amphions and original LA2A/1176s. That's super out of reach for most people, including myself as well haha
      Here's the big disagreement here though, what do you define as a 'true' engineer? I use presets all the time, when I'm using distortion or reverbs and delays and then tweak them to how I want. It's a super easy way to bounce through ideas quickly. Musos also do that with presets on their synth patches, for example. Am I not a true engineer because I do that? Because then 99% of engineers aren't either. Where is the line for a true engineer? I'm sure if you talked to older engineers when DAWs were first coming around, they said the same thing as you. That 'true' engineers record to tape, not crap sounding digitally converted garbage. And now, here we are where some of the biggest engineers on the planet are entirely ITB. My point is, there is no 'true' audio engineer. For the consumer, who wants a song to sound amazing and make them feel something, who cares if you recorded it to tape, or used a reverb room, or used Gullfoss? They want to enjoy music for the sake of music, and as engineers we can be get caught up in our world. Dave Pensado uses Gullfoss and Soothe in every one of his mixes and I guarantee engineers will continue to use AI as it gets better, because at the end of the day the only thing that matters is if the song sounds great.

    i thought we´re not puttig a ton of plugins on the Mix Bus and fix the Problems where they appear.

    Nah, in your examples of the full mix it just pumps trying to average spectral changes. This works completely against having actual arrangement and different instruments with different timbres. Spectral dynamics are much better suited to evening out individual parts such as differences in bass strings, vocal sibilance, etc.
    It could be beneficial to use it as a second pair of ears to suggest some possible changes for your mix/master, though.

    i would like to see if you put a dynamic EQ right in front of that and gave it the same general eq shape would it more flatten the Gullfoss out??

    You forgot the Boost button, which is not a volume control. It controls the low mids/bass verses upper end relationship.

    How to use this now I've got it? Can I put it after my usual mastering chain before the limiter? Need to add some fatness and tame brash HH's ;-)

      This thing will balance the mix so it does not have any coloration or appealing curve! Its best at the start of the chain so you feed the other following processors with a “good balanced mix” !! Hope you get it!

    You know you've watched too much SMG when you're looking at product demos for pieces of gear you're interested in and call out a producer on their guitar signals being basically squished cubes in their DAW instead of a normal guitar signal.

  • @Anvilshock

    Huh. Sounds like a side-chained spectral ducker working on a copy of the original, with the individual thresholds set so that the result approaches something between pink and white noise, biased by the human hearing curve.
    But cooler.
