London has always been dodgy, particularly around the tourist areas. Watch your valuables carefully. Rest of the country you'll be fine 99% of the time.
This instance isn't really related to targeting of tourists. ATMs (particularly those not at the ever diminishing number of banks) and POS terminals are vulnerable everywhere.
How can you justifiably say you’ll be fine 99% everywhere else? Birmingham ain’t exactly known for being family friendly and neither’s Manchester or Nottingham. Just keep ya wits about you man
Damn I'm surprised that would happen in a small town, I live in the biggest city in Australia and I've personally never had an issue with skimmers and I always try and check if there are skimmers anywhere I put my card into.
@@josephhutchins8 Having grown up in a very small rural town as well as cities (father was a military man so we moved quite a bit), let me dispel any romantic notions you might have that rural people are lovely simple folk that won’t rip you off, friend! Certainly many are nice, wholesome people. But the thing is the ones who are in on scams often are in cooperation (or sometimes even related to) local influential powers like law enforcement or local government. So you can get completely fleeced in a rural area and be able to do essentially nothing about it. Safe to be cautious anywhere.
As a guy who works with these things for 20 years now, 1)YES! Cover the pinpad when you are punching the pin ,2) use contactless when possible 3) if you get skammed, file a formal complaint to the bank- a field engineer will verify the skimming and the bank will return your money!
You can get faraday shields for your cards, too. And shielded wallets. There's been a problem with hacked cash machines here in the UK for a while now.
Yes unfortunately here in the UK at ATMs there's quite often a device that fits over where you put your card in, looks like the original, skims your card as you insert it (passing through to the actual ATM) and has a little camera built in that send video to someone stood close by...
I got mine skimmed I think in York, fortunately it wasnt my main account it was a card I load as and when required, think Chase, Revolut etc. I actually got my money back anyway from the card provider and I was able to change the card number too, but I only ever load it £50 to £100 a time so worst case scenario is that I'd lise £100. Sorry Joey😞
Sorry that happened in England. London can be risky and tourists will get targeted. Again, apologies for that happening to you and I hope it doesn’t put you off returning. The north of the country is far friendlier ;)
Yep, look out for skimmers on ATMs and eftpos terminals. If the keypad or slot look a little dodgy back away smartly. The false stick on keypads record your pin number.
Damn, what a bummer! I'm guessing it's a debit card situation instead of a credit card? I recall coming home after a trip to NYC with a couple 'unapproved' charges. I'm 99% sure it was when I bought tickets to an event over the unsecure hotel network. Electronic theft is rampant and that's why I only use a credit card (aka the never-never) when traveling. Visa has never denied an 'unauthorized' claim, and my wife and I have, frustratingly, had many over the years.
I don’t know why more ppl aren’t saying this. Never use debit as payment source. Either pay cash if you don’t like/have credit or use someone else’s money like Visa lol
card skimmers capture the card info and pin numbers. the easiest way to miss those is by not using an unattended terminal (like pay at the gas pump here in the states)
Don't use a debit card linked to your personal account anywhere if you can help it. If you do, transfer everything but the minimum out of the checking account into savings while you travel. That will hopefully minimize any theft. Totally sucks man!
Have 2 card accounts only keep just enough money in one that you are using. The other is not to be used anywhere but the bank. Need more? Open the bank app in your phone and transfer over. That way if they rob n you, they're only getting less than 5$£€
Don’t ever use cash. Use your mobile device to pay for everything if you can. I also use an alternate bank just for traveling. Have all sorts of free or low conversion rates
Traveling during 2020, I made this mistake also. Middle of the night, unfamiliar place, half a continent away in the rain, some very lovely person placed a skimmer on a CC pad and I just wanted gas
I live in London and this kind of stuff happens a lot, at least you didn’t get stabbed cause that happens every day and in school when we play a game and someone gets stabbed, I always say “You wouldn’t survive one day in london” so yeah sorry that this happened to you
While I'm not downplaying getting stabbed, I almost want to laugh being in the US because as you know over here it's not going to be a knife coming at you.... I just stopped going to the city. A professional musician that no longer goes to or plays shows. I prefer my blood inside my body, & my car & gear in my own possession.
Maybe get a cash card and load that up and only transfer limited funds to it. Never let anyone use your card where you can’t see it, people can skim your card out of sight and take an image of your ccv number on the back.
Yeah the corner shops are a hazard. If you are travelling consider a top-up debit card that you load with money before you use it. Hopefully Joey's bank will refund him.
Dude. Never use debit when traveling. Always use credit cards because you can call them and tell them to cancel that transaction, as it wasn’t you. I’ve done that numerous times from online thieves, etc…
Be really careful of cash machines they put a device in them that reads the card and a tiny camera that watches your pin number. Always cover your hand when you enter your pin
Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience . If you’re in London again and need a tour guide . Give me a shout . I can do videography too get nothing but cool shots . Let me know .
We were in the UK and Paris this past February, and most all places we went to have tap-to-pay now (tap the chip in the card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, etc...). My understanding is that this is much more secure due to the encryption on the transaction that occurs, especially with Google/Apple pay as they also use a temporary number for the transaction. Sorry to hear he got his card number jacked :(
Probably not by an indigenous person.London has very few genuine British people left living there. Sorry this happened to you, I'm ashamed of what our country has become.

Corner stores is right. Sorry to hear it guys. Paying cash is not safe either. Some prick almost grabbed it out of my hands and had a fucking audacity to have a go at me. Probably had a fucking knife on him too.
always try to feel if there is a second number pad placed on top of the original one at the atm that is how they get your pin if it seems like you can pull it of they probably put a second layer on that saves the pins

Joey should have gotten an alert on his phone of the transaction. He then could have stopped it. I travel to Europe a lot. Always get messages on transactions outside the U.S . Instantly. Good luck guys!
@@TheOnlyJoeyYT Actually it does, but it depends on the bank. That's how this year we caught on time an attempt to charge my dad from Amazon France, while we're in Spain, and he didn't even had an Amazon France account. It can really vary. I felt safer on May/June while I travelled in China. You associate a card to Weixin Pay or Alipay, and then you pay with a QR code, or you scan the code of the merchant. This code is constantly renewed, even if it's not scanned. They can't rob you, unless you authorise the charge operation (so then it would become a scam).
