    Hey Chickenman161, it looks like you're commenting from a private google+ account so I can't actually respond directly to your comment. Hopefully you see this reply sometime.
    Thanks for your kind words, I enjoy making these videos and trying to illuminate the depth of Smash (I had to learn everything by messaging better players and going through thousands of forum posts).
    I made up the fox combo at 1:00 because I wanted something that used as many tilts as possible without being a super long combo. The aerial > Dtilt setup is pretty standard but Isai once said, "the less you Dair, the better your fox combos are" (paraphrase) so most players would follow that with a Uair or maybe strong Nair.
    I think making overview videos of different characters would be great. I could talk about the perception that the character has within the competitive community, strengths and weaknesses, important advanced techniques, recovery options, basic and intermediate combos, etc. I definitely understand each character at a deep enough level to do this because I take my knowledge from high level character specialists and not from my experience with my group of friends. I would also get feedback from those character specialists before posting the videos so that they could be "approved by competitive X mains".
    Melee is a great game but not absolutely better than 64. A famous commentator once called it "free flow jazz" and I think that's about right. You have to have incredible tech skill and be able to both think on your feet and read your opponent to do well in Melee. On the other hand, I think the general Melee perception of 64 is wrong. A lot of people think 64 is strictly easier and slower than Melee and the combos are inescapable but that's simply not true. Those people are just used to the easy DI in Melee and so they talk about high hitstun without talking about the high hitlag. I would argue that you have to think further in the future in 64 than in Melee but that's certainly debatable.
    In my very limited experience I think Brawl is garbage and Smash4 is a worse version of Melee. Honestly I wouldn't care if someone told me they were a competitive Brawl or Smash4 player (wouldn't immediately disrespect them though) but I have immediate respect for competitive Melee and 64 players. Though let's be honest, the Melee community has a million more ragers and 12 year olds than 64.
    64 is a deep game with easily the chillest community and for that, I'm very glad it's the game I chose to invest in

      Nate L I am going to quote you from now on, when I have to argue somebody in 64 VS Melee, your videos are the deepest tutorials I could ever find

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      marioleon86 Thanks man I appreciate that. Keep in mind that Melee isn't a bad game at all, it's just that 64 is way deeper and better than most Melee players think it is (and most people for that matter)!

    • @Chickenman161
      @Chickenman161 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nate L Oh no my accounts private! That's funny oh man, I must have maxed out the privacy when the accounts changed over ^^'. I think I've fixed the issue now, hopefully.
      Oh my god did Isai really say that about Dairs, oh man my fox is poop lollll. I kind of discovered the effectiveness of Z-cancelled arial > Just about anything on my own and kind of overused dair lol. I guess avoiding dairs is because of DI? It's multihit so I'd imagine so, anyways.
      Those ideas for overviews sound really great! That's really amazing that you have access to that kind of information from those players too. The perception of the character is really interesting and really important too, I'm glad you think that's worth talking about.
      I agree with you with you in regard to DI, honestly think in terms of mid-combo defensive options, they seem about tied, with melee's DI and SDI probably being a liiitle better at escaping. Honestly I think Melee and 64's combo game is....kind of similar? That might sound ridiculous but what melee lacks in hit stun it sort of makes up for in gravity by keeping opponents relativity close. 64's walls and hitstun still seem to allow for a pretty ridiculous amount of creativity.
      I say this though, coming from basically a casuals perspective. I know a fair share of important tech in both games but I've never been to a tournament (though I have played against others who've learnt some tech and stuff), and I kind of find pulling off combos in either game about the same. Melee seems to have more situational moves though (or just bad ones), but I kind of feel like every character also has a "This one really huge combo that kills a lot/is very effective", which can sometimes be a bit flowchart-y? Though maybe this is just how a lot of optimally played fighters go at a high level, I've watched a lot more melee than 64. I'm sure 64 has it's flowcharts haha.
      I think the true biggest divide are the respective game's neutral. Maybe in a vacuum they aren't that different, with pivots being similar to wavedashes...kind of, but in practice 64's neutral is far slower (though very matchup dependent from what I can tell?), possibly because of the greater cost to messing up in the neutral, or maybe the AT's are more limited in terms of movement, I don't really know tbh.
      That's interesting that you think Smash 4 is like a worse Melee, would you say the same about brawl if it didn't have histun cancelling and tripping? I can't say I disrespect the players of those games, I just find the defensive - abuse that you need to utilize and the lack of options in neural just not fun (Why did we get rid of dash dancing, or cancelling a run with crouch, or pivots. All the players rely on is the occasional fox trot and lots of shield stops and...rolls) Not even mentioning no aerial lag cancelling abilities (Z-cancelling, etc).
      Also, no mention of PM, tsk tsk haha. I really like the premise of PM even though I haven't played it, and maybe it's true having a huge roster dilutes the meta, but eeeehhhhh still seems fun to know most characters are pretty badass. I guess the same could be said for 64 bar the roster size....mostly. And Brawl tech is nice, though DACUS seems somewhat ludicrous sometimes haha.
      Yeah, 64 seems far more chill, I guess players try to be more respectful of each other as there's fewer, and yeah, melee's community is a bit of a turn off, not all the time but sometimes. But hey, that's coming from someone who's never been in a tournament, so this is all observations and guesswork.
      Thanks for your response Nate..er...Tom? ;P

    I guess this is a good time to say that your series rocks and has made the tech of smash 64 way more transparent and less scary for me. It's been amazing!
    I was wondering, do you have any plans from here? It doesn't seem like there's much more tech to cover, but do you think maybe a "X Combos for Beginners" for some other characters would be cool? I don't know if you have an interest in other characters to want to do this or the knowledge, which is totally cool.
    You could always expand your falcon tutorials, but I feel like you may have a fox or kirby hmmmm? I can't really tell lol, just judging from the highlights you put in (That fox combo 1:00, though it's probably really common and I know nothing, lollll).
    Btw, what do you think of the other smash games? Why choose 64? Do you feel like 64 affords the most creativity due to the hitstun, do you think the hitstun oversimplifies certain interactions? I dunno i like to hear players opinions on their smash games of choice, htistun probably being 64's most contentious quality, probably.

    Hi Nate, once again a great video. I am really learning a lot from your videos. I've picked up one of your recommended control sticks from lukiegames and have been practicing. To me it is still very sensitive, but I'm improving all the time. Can pivot uptilt and fastfall upair be done with the stick on a consistent basis? I seem to miss these way more than I hit them.
    Any drills you recommend for a beginning player to develop movement and tilt control? I've been doing your back jump, upair, fast fall drill from one of your fist vids, but I think I am buffering the uptilt instead of letting the stick come back to neutral.
    Thanks very much!

    • @Dugimeister
      @Dugimeister 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good, I'll look into it soon. One last question, what do you think about joystick replacement? I bought one that is very rigid so it doesn't get loose, but I found the game play was much harder, perhaps I only need to get used to it? It's so sensitive I found it nearly impossible to drop from a platform combining an Up A, my character would just jump every time instead, hehe. Thinking about returning to a controller with the original joystick

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dugimeister I should get a FAQ, this question is really common.
      I (and I have seen some high level players with a controller with it installed) use a gamecube style replacement stick: (www.lukiegames.com/n64-replacement-thumbstick.html)
      It is buttery smooth and DI is absolutely guilt-free. However, you will run into the problem of jumping when you try to do falling uairs. Just practice and be ready to re-learn your tilts and I think it's worth it.
      The original thumbstick is also a great choice. If you do get one, take it apart and grease the bowl and parts to prevent wear

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is 64 not melee. Also there is strong evidence Sakurai did add Z-cancelling intentionally, here's the official post-release website he maintained describing the technique: www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/Control.html#%E7%A9%BA%E4%B8%AD%E6%94%BB%E6%92%83%E7%9D%80%E5%9C%B0. Copy/paste because I get this question a lot:
      I do use an original controller but I had to update the thumbstick after mine wore out (despite me greasing it when it was new). The new thumstick that I have is gamecube style:
      www.lukiegames.com/n64-replacement-thumbstick.html
      There are mixed reviews in the competitive community about them.
      I love it. But I think that's mainly because I was willing to invest time into practicing the hard things with it. The thumbstick achieves maximum activation very quickly which makes movement like dashing and FF off platforms really smooth. As a falcon main, this is very desirable. Also, because I don't have to worry about wearing it out, I DI every chance I get and get tons of practice that way (there is a philosophy that you sometimes don't DI during friendlies on an original thumbstick because you will loosen it up too much).
      On the other hand, maximum activation makes tilting a much smaller window. It's very easy to accidentally jump while attempting an utilt even if you can utilt very comfortably on an original thumbstick. By extension, uairing without jumping a dairing without fast falling are also much more difficult. If you are super used to an original thumbstick, the transition to my thumbstick can be very arduous.
      But as I said, I was willing to practice and I hadn't played competitively on an original thumbstick that long anways so the transition was okay.
      My practice drill: I would start at the top platform on DL and run off to do an uair without jumping, landing on a side platform. Then I would drop to the middle of the stage doing the same thing. I would then run and single jump uair onto other side platform and do the same thing to get back to the top. I often do this drill as a warmup before games. When done correctly, you go in a large circle around DL, touching each of the platforms and the ground like a clock hand. Obviously the same thing can be done with dairs but the goal is to not fast fall instead of not jump.
      If you want to replace your thumbstick and get the original feel, I'd recommend browsing ebay and just grabbing a new controller. Just buying the stick won't save you much money and, in my experience, no remake feel the same. Only buy controllers with sticks that claim to be "tight" or "like new". It's a risk but you can contact the seller beforehand as well to try to be sure. Good luck!
      Just to be clear, I have adjusted my emulator settings to match the N64 and I can (and do) plug in my controller to my actual console to play. So this isn't a computer only thing
