- A compilation of the all-time greatest combos in Smash 64 combo contests!
Combo contests are the Smash version of the NBA slam dunk contest, with players performing combos, and judges giving ratings based on how good the combo was. They're most popular in Smash 64 due to the high hitstun allowing for absolutely insane combos that would be impossible in other Smash games, and many 64 players (Such as Prince and many others) have spent tons of time coming up with super creative and awesome combos over the years, all of these factors come together to make every 64 combo contest an absolute treat to watch!

I don't think a 10 should be common! A 10 is like "you can't improve on this, it's the best this combo can be" and I don't think we see many of those. I'm all for strict judges!

Smash 64's sound design is the epitome of "party game" and I'm fucking for it. The crowd sounds are garbage in every other game and the impact hits are so mediocre. Gonna get me a modded switch just to have Ultimate use 64 SFX

I felt like they gave out too many 10s. You can't just give out a 10 because a combo is impressive. 10 is the highest possible score, so it should be given to combos where you can comfortably say that nothing should be able to get more points. Imo only 2-3 maaybe 4 were 10s.

@@acquiescinit What these highlight reels often leave out due to being rather time-constrained, are the struggles and hustle the chaps put in. Sometimes watching the contestants glorious perform some of these on their tenth and or final try can be super satisfying to see. Smash 64 contests are some of the few feature film long yt exclusives that I would comfortably sit down watching blind.
@@acquiescinit I know it was months ago but if everyone was strict, u would score a max of 45. There are few combos that are worthy of 48-49 points where its like "The combo was really really nice but...". To balance it out, u need like 1-2 fair but strict judges that seriously play the game like Boom and Isai (the hard critics u really gotta impress). 2 fair judges for the general viewer (the average or neutral critic that u must exceed normal expectations to receive a 10). And 1 wildcard that understands hype (the guy that will most likely give u a 10). Its always like this, just look at the NBA slam dunk contest.

@Shadow Knight lol i love how you can even tell the cultural differences in the combos. I noticed the Japanese players usually had more technical combos while the Americans went for the raw hype combos

Americans go for the true combos that are technical with some items, like tacos and alvin, Japanese go for hype and rely much more on the items they use and stage rather than their own moves, mainly it is just kysk who only rarely uses items in some of the combos
Angel Castillo I gotta agree. The Japanese don’t go for flare. It’s a lot of tightness, efficiency, and nuance. Makes sense. Seems like the Americans go for more broad strokes and visuals. Really shows the difference between a super developed culture and a young culture.

Honestly the highlight of any Smash Con is the 64 combo contest. It’s so cool and just seems to get more creative every year

Dude, I LOVE that this is a thing that happens. It's competitive, yet, cooperative in a sense. Above all, it is creative and fosters a spirit of friendship and camaraderie in a way that salty 1v1s never could. I would love if everyone had a chance to do something like this after the tournaments are over, to turn over any salty feelings and emotions that might linger on and better build a sense of solidarity and unity within the smash community.

Why are Smash combos so satisfying
Because they are
Probably because there's a lot of movement.
Most combos in traditional fighting games involve one character wailing on the other while staying mostly still. The technical prowess can be impressive, and flashy animations can make it look snazzy, but it's still mostly stationary.
In Smash combos, and especially in Smash 64 combos, and _especially_ in Smash 64 combo contest combos, it's much more dynamic. Characters and projectiles are darting around the screen every which way, and it comes across as less of a beat down and more of a frantic Rube Goldberg of pain.
The noises make them satisfying

The audio cutting on these clips actually adds to the effect, really has that old school charm.
Something about this game in particular blew my mind as a kid. Seeing these characters interact...felt unreal. Words can’t do it justice. (Loved playing Pikachu and Link!)

The thing I prefer with 64 combo contest is seeing how the craziness of the combos evolved throughout the years, the full videos are worth watching but watch them from the oldest to the latest :)
i think my absolute favorite moment was at 5:25 when he walks off and the crowd gives him an additional applause and there's the bouncer dudes on the side poppin off with him

Probably my favorite (side) event to watch at SSC. I wish there were more majors with a 64 contest but if we only get 1 or 2 a year thats better than none.
Was wondering all video if there would be a final clip that could beat out the damage boost Pikachu combo. It was so hype seeing the first try when Prince sling shoted himself across the map. The crowd's initial reaction of what the hell is this set up and then going to HOLY SHIT THAT'S CRAZY! Priceless.
