The Mercedes GLB delivers to the market the first properly practical mid-sized SUV from the Three-Pointed Star. There's enough room for seven seats, enough capability for light off road excursions and enough of a premium feel to make other class rivals feel rather low rent.
Background
So, yet another Mercedes SUV - this is actually the eighth. But this one has a little more substance than its compact stablemates. The GLA suits only quite small families and the GLC is too expensive for larger ones - and can't be ordered with the third seating row that many of them need. In the same way that at the top of the Stuttgart brand's SUV range, the G-Class offered a practical alternative to a GLE, such is the role of a GLB against a GLA or a GLC. Still with me?
If you are, then you'll be interested in the way that Mercedes wants to use this car to address a growing niche on the mid-sized family SUV class, that for seven seats. The VW Group currently does quite well here with ones like the Skoda Kodiaq, the SEAT Tarraco and the VW Tiguan Allspace. The Koreans provide the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Sorento, plus there are 7-seat versions of the Nissan X-Trail and the Honda CR-V. There have to be buyers in that sub-sector who'd like a premium badge. The GLB, mostly offered in 7-seat form, caters directly to them.
Driving Experience
The GLB offers the same engine and powertrain combinations that you'll find in other compact Mercedes models. This means that the starting point to the range is provided by the same Renault-derived 1.3 litre petrol turbo engine you'll find in an A-Class. In the GLB 200, it puts out 163hp and drives the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox. If you want the option of 4MATIC 4WD, you'll need to move to a diesel, the 150hp GLB 200d. In the next model up, the GLB 220d with 190hp, you have to have the 4MATIC system, a variant that can be specified with an optional off-road engineering package. This gives you hill start and descent assistance, LED Multibeam headlights and an extra off-road driving mode which includes a special infotainment display showing gradient, technical settings and your various incline angles.
At the top of the range sits the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 performance model, which gets the 306hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit from the A 35 hot hatch. Power comes through an 8-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox with a race start function. Plus there's an AMG Dynamic Select driving modes system that as well as the three modes featured in other GLBs ('Comfort', 'Sport' and 'Individual') also features two further ones ('Slippery' and 'Sport+').
Design and Build
The look of the GLB draws inspiration from Mercedes' grand 'G-Class' 'Gelandewagen' - which you need to know because otherwise, you might wonder why it's quite so squarical and van-like. Even Designer Robert Lesnik describes it as 'a box with rounded edges'. The dimensions are a little confusing too, this car actually being almost the same size as the GLC model it supposedly sits beneath in the Mercedes SUV line-up; this GLB's 4.63m length sees it measuring in only 21mm shorter than a GLC - and it's actually 18mm taller than that car.
Inside buyers get much the same 'widescreen cockpit' instrument layout as you'll find on all the company's modern compact models. And as usual, it's controlled by the brand's MBUX voice-activated interface. All this hardware integrates into a rather unusually shaped dashboard, this one with an aluminium-look 'tubular' lower element. In the second row, the boxy shape contributes towards quite a spacious feel. And if you're going for a GLB with 7 seats, you'll get an easy-entry feature to reach them. As for the boot space, well there's 560-litres of it in the 5-seat model, which to give you some perspective is 140-litres more than you'd get in an Audi Q5. And you can expand that by flattening the 40:20:40-split backrest to free up 1,755-litres. In 7-seat GLBs, the third row pews fold flat into the floor when not in use.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply Honestly the price was too good to pass up... plus I feel the minor differences were not worth it... Also the 2022 has the updated infotainment system vs the GLC/GLA/GLS iirc... Also I didn't need the additional horsepower the GLC has. Also SPACE that was a huge consideration... its the biggest SUV next to the GLS or G but the GLS is a bit too big and the G is way to expensive...

I’ve had mine for over two months now and I have to say, I really love it! The space in this car is unbelievable. It is comfortable, quiet and really nice to drive.
I went for the 200 model and the little 1.3 engine has a bit of poke, thanks to the turbo. I want comfort rather than speed so this engine is fine for me and I am averaging about 39.5 mpg.
The tech in this car is superb and the two 10 inch screens are so good.
The only disappointment I had was it didn’t have the powered tailgate. Due to microchip shortage, they took this out and it has no option for a retro fit.
If you want value for money and fancy options, go for the midrange Premium option.
Overall, I would give it a 9/10.

The windshield glass of the GLB250 cracks easily with any small flying object that hits the glass on the road. I have a 2020 GLB250 and so far The windshield has cracked 5 times in less than 2 years. I believe the cause is attributed to a flaw in the upright design of the front windshield. No recall has been announced and MB has not admitted any wrong.

Update: absolutely love it. Expensive initially yes, but its cheaper in insurance and I'm getting 48mpg around town, drop it in sports mode and it takes off, also very practical, great all rounder, highly recommended. Compared to my LR Disco sport its light years ahead
Update from last year. The GLB hasn't put a foot wrong, although the VED has risen to £520. Still as good as the day I brought it. Highly recommend
I’ve owned mine nearly a year and it’s pretty damn good. Either buy the 2020 /early 2021 late 2023 models. Any other models are missing features in the UK from the chip shortage.

Brilliant car, and from this Brilliant OSV presenter, however, as though the infuriating TH-cam adds weren’t bad enough the constant interruptions from OSV are even worse!

My gosh, I think I watched a lot of reviews and pretty know of the car then bought my 220d 7 seats mountain grey metallics on June 2021.

Take a look at the gls. That one really looks like a hearse. In fact the very reason I started taking a look at gl(other than s) is that gls was too much of a hearse for me.

You Know we bought Hyundai 2021 Tucson elite plus. It's a full options car. Heaters, 360 degree cameras. Seat cooler etc. I was thinking glb but it alike going backwards. No cool or no 360 cameras etc etc. Don't Know. I don't want to pay alot for just a brand. Here it is 2.000.000 Turkish Liras. Tucson is 1.500.000 TL. Too much difference.

Great car, If only merc improved the suspension and upgraded the engine to a 2 litre petrol for such a big car whilst keeping the price the same it would have ticked a lot of boxes.

It’s a gorgeous suv if not for the 7 seats I’d rather get the bigger GLC more money but I like it more

GLB or GLC? GLB is priced very closely to GLC. I think the GLC it's the more refined car.

GLB is so much bigger in the boot, especially with 3rd row down. We chose GLB over GLC for that reason. Plus it's got newer tech. Only downside is they do have cheaper interiors
I like the design and interior but the 1.3 engine is Renault sourced and is the same engine used in the Dacia Duster! This may be a good engine but I for one would expect a Mercedes engine under the bonnet considering the cost of a GLB. Obviously Mercedes have done this to cut costs (which have not been passed on to their customers.) Although the Dacia Duster does not have all of the gadgets, gizmos and space the GLB has, I could comfortably sit in my Duster at the traffic lights next to the GLB and look at the GLB driver thinking mate you have been ripped off! I drove a rental Renault Kadjar and that had the same 1.3 engine. Its a really good engine and I can see why Mercedes feel its suitable for their cars. Fits a large car really well, yeah its not fast but for most people its a good cheaper engine in a premium car. Looking at Mercedes website its nearly £3000 cheaper for that engine. Not a bad deal if you want smaller.
@@wayfaringcookie8142 I am not saying that it is not a bad engine (see my original comment) What I am saying is this is an expensive car and for the price surely Mercedes should be fitting a Mercedes designed and built engine. If I purchased a GLB, I would feel short changed as the most important component of my car is not a Mercedes Benz.

GLB is a good car, but Santa Fe and Sorento sit in a higher segment. They are substantially larger.

Please respect environment and don't buy fossil fuel cars as it not only damaging our planet but our health & it is out going technology in which car companies tring desperately/quickly get ride of them by different way or shape(Hybrid)as fossil fuel cars would be devalued next year, as the matter of fact it has already started.
My old Daewoo Nexia fwd 1997 has better off-road capabilities than this joke just because of the ground clearance. Having stability control doesn't mean "off-road vehicle" but I guess the customers like how it sounds when they're pouring their money into the pockets of the manifacturer.
I dont believe Mercedes create GLB to be a pure off road. Besides 4 matic is one the best control traction in the market.
