    One thing we did in 2021 was install a NEST (smart) thermostat in our house . Now when we are on extended vacations we can check the temperature of our house via the internet at any time (and so can our kids). Much less stress and worry about how things are "back home"

    Being able to get along with your partner helps with a stress free retirement. However, not everyone who is retired is in this enviable position.

    Way ahead of you... I bought a 75" TV from Costco in November 2020 Black Friday sale for $1200. It was my best pandemic purchase ever and one that I continue to enjoy the most during cold weather!

    Great advice. Routine and ritual are important. We are both seniors. We tend to stay away from the TV during the day (slippery slope) and engage in many other activiteies. My wife and I have hobbies which consume a lot of our time. We also have part-time jobs but no more than 8 hours per week (teach online). It gives us a little extra spending money and keeps our brains stimulated. Keep up the good work. You folks are TH-camrs I regularly visit.

    You produce awesome videos, thanks. My wife and I have been using our time to take better care of ourselves. We both go to the YMCA, My wife likes to swim and I like going to the weight and machine area. We also take time to review diet, trying to move away from the Ultra Processed Foods. I have lost about 30 lbs since June and trying to get more flexibility back as well which is going to be a chore. :-) My only wishes or regrets, if you will, is that I should have retired about 3 years ago and taken better care of my health. You are quite right about when to take CPP and OAS, if you have considerable retirement income you likely should wait until 70 to collect. If one falls in the "It is a struggle to retire" group, that income could be useful! A fiduciary Certified Financial Planner could be useful if you are not sure about how much income do you need to retire! They can help one develop a financial plan, then you will know! Any way Good stuff, Cheers.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching it’s easy to say in hindsight that perhaps you should of retired earlier but you need to move forward now . Even though we have the income we still believe and both took CPP at 60 and OAS at 65 as we don’t have a crystal ball 🔮 to what the future holds . Have a wonderful week Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

    59 Evermore!
    I really have to think about a Roomba. Hmm, I have gift cards to Amazon and don't know what to do with them.......hmmmm. I still use a french press for coffee, now since I know how to properly brew coffee. The NY Times ran a piece last week in its food section. 4 minutes, then stir the cap. Wait an additional 5 to 8 minutes. Plunge. I have been doing it wrong. I would wait the 4 minutes, but then plunge. Now the coffee is much, much better.
    I have my eye on a 75 inch from Best Buy. They haul away the old TV.
    I was meaning to ask. I know a couple of Canadians that were former British citizens. When they took Canadian citizenship, they had to take an oath to the Queen again. I find that humorous. It's not like you came from the U.S. and took Canadian citizenship.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, Don't know what happened to your comment but we seemed to have just got 10 comments from you and others appear that are late!! Roomba has been good for us because it cleans better than our old upright. We had a french press for most of our lives especially in the UK with a series of Bodums. Costco had a good price pre Christmas on LG and the delivery right into our apartment was great....but it's the Costco warranty that no other store can beat! Strange how things stand out, yes we had to swear an oath to the Queen at our citizenship ceremony, but and this is the funny part British people born and living in Britain never have to swear an oath to the monarch.

    I do a few auto payments through my bank but I tend to like having a paper copy in my hand (old school, I know) before I pay. The reason is it gives me a much better sense of what going through my account at any given time. Also, if there is any dispute as to the amount charged, the receiver already has your payment and it could take time to get it rectified. Just a few things to think about. As long as you're diligent about keeping track of everything that goes through auto payments, it's fine.

    All good ideas. One additional thing we do as well is order three dinner kits a week. Each dinner comes with a recipe card and ALL the ingredients needed. Portions are big, so we can usually get two dinners or one dinner and one lunch out of each kit. Takes the hassle out of coordinating meal planning with grocery shopping.

    Great video. I pay all my bills and credit cards online too. One thing I did to remove stress was set up automatic minimum payments of the credit cards. I always pay my total credit card each month to avoid interest charges. However, I'm worried I might miss paying sometime. With the auto minimum payment I don't have to worry. I may have to pay a little interest but I don't worry that I'd miss out making any payment, which would affect my credit. I haven't missed making a full payment yet, but it has removed any stress about the possibility.

    Lots of good ideas most I already use. But, wanted to point out in USA most places do not have rent control. Just parts of NYC. So, rent can go up in USA. Usually one year lease and owners can decide to not renew. We plan to live in my townhome that I rent out now for retirement. My renters pay me with automatic deposit and I pay expenses with autopay. But, I Increase the rent as expenses go up.

    Debits are ok for usual things , but if you're getting the pension it can fall on different dates or days ,even if it's every two weeks ,, , so you have to be careful about that ,, or make sure you have money to cover debits unless you made an arrangement with the bank to cover that debit if your pension comes in on a different day or date or late for some reason , ,,, otherwise you can end up paying a bank fee or penalty for not having enough funds to cover your debits whatever it might be , whatever you do make sure you have enough to cover your debits , or call the company in question to arrange an other payment.

    Great show. Love our Roomba and all that it picks up from our already "clean" floors. Our credit union also offers Bill Pay which you set up to have a check mailed monthly on certain dates to providers who do not take automatic payments. It works well for our gardner and HOA. If you have a small fixed amount bill, you can also pay a lump sum to cover several months to cut down on stress. Costco is moving towards more of an Amazon model with available merchandise. In the US we have Costco Next where you purchase the items directly from the manufacture at Costco negotiated pricing. One drawback is you cannot return the merchandise to your local Costco, it has to be returned to the manufacturer.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Norm and Tina - it's always nice to see you on Saturday :) We like the Roomba and tried talking our mom into getting one but she didn't like the idea. She has mobility issues and I think it would be great but she is pretty stubborn!LOL Anything that helps you feel less stressed is a bonus. I really enjoy going to the grocery store but I am tempted with the curbside pickup option. I'm sure it would help me stay on my budget as I wouldn't be tempted with all those items on offer that are not on my list. I still need to take the car out once a week to give it a run too so that would work better than delivery for us.

    Hi. I have watched and enjoyed a few of your videos but this last one may have sent the wrong message.
    Plastic bags are being banned across Canada for a reason and so to continue to use them is not a good admission. I can see the recycling aspect but everyone needs to be encouraged to use alternatives to plastic in the future.
    Secondly, shopping at Walmart.......is it supporting local Canadian stores or businesses. The megastores can be cheaper for various reasons but they are destroying other businesses, which removes competition and eventually prices will rise unabated due to lack of choice.... just some thoughts. Keep on doing the vids but the environment and things that affects the future are important.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walmart employs thousands of Canadians, during this pandemic they are offering a wonderful service ordering online and going to pick up your groceries you stay in the car.Using plastic bags is their way of supplying the food to you , we also recycle ♻️ the bags at home as bin bags . Also other grocery stores are asking you not to bring your own bags as the staff don’t want to touch them 🤔 You seem to be adding Stress to an already stressful Pandemic 😷🌺

    It’s great to see two people with their retirement plans running smoothly. Here in NZ one definition of poverty. Is paying rent in old age, Canada must be very different in that regard. Another difference is the importance of daily activity for seniors, like housework eg vacuuming and cleaning also gardening especially lawn mowing. Walking to the bank, carrying groceries, any type of movement is absolutely essential for getting the most enjoyment out of old age. If you live in a two story house walk up and down the staircase just for the fun of it!!!

      Yeah same here in Australia and in fact the benefits re Govt. pensions etc are massive as well if you own your own home.
      There are plenty of services available to keep people in their homes longer as well.
      Going to be interesting to see how a few "stress free" retirements go if economies around the world keep on the trajectories that they seem to be on atm.
      Personally I think a large part of being stress free at any time in life is to have the resources when you need them and to not be reliant on any more outside sources than you need to be.

      In our situation selling our home and renting wouldn't even be something that we would consider tbh.
      It was bought home to us even more with all the lockdowns and restrictions as we live in a nice area and we improved our place a bit so that being locked down really wasn't a hassle at all.

    Thanks for the great videos. Been enjoying for a while. We are in our 70 s and still enjoy rental income from property. Values have more than trebled in the last 10 years. Put another way we now need 40 times the money it cost to buy our first house (bought 45 years ago) , to buy that same house now! So the problem is money is losing its buying power at a huge rate. At least halving in 10 years. Now you rent and invest in the stock market and rent? Isnt your money at risk of vanishing overnight in a financial crash? At least your purchasing power can disappear! You may get good dividends but the capital is losing its purchasing power. If you plan to live another 30 years do you want to bounce the last cheque?? I guess your lifestyle is no stress. I am chasing tenants and fixing the houses I rent them so I have more stress?? Keep up the videos, very real and entertaining! Best wishes.

    Thanks for another video. My sister and brother in law in England had to isolate for the pandemic and they have been getting their groceries online from Morrison’s and really appreciated the service. I must admit that we use Amazon for items we can’t find elsewhere, but we try to order locally if possible, from Home Hardware or Canadian Tire, we just feel that Jeff Bezos has enough money. We recently went to a local shopping mall and we knew it was struggling,mouth we could hardly believe our eyes, it looked like it was 85% vacant. We know we can’t save the world, but hopefully shopping locally will keep some shops open for us. I used to work for Lewis’s in Birmingham and have been in the retail industry for over 45 years in Canada. Thanks again, keep them coming, stay well.
