I'm a single American and I'm learning so many hacks for retirement and travel from this channel. Although I'm not retirement age, the information is on point. At least someone is out there doing their homework, instead of being scared of their own shadows and stuck inside all day as arm chair travelers. 👏🏾

The pandemic hit me hard. I got covid twice, once severely, and the second Omicron strain less severely but I was still recovering from the first case. Then my long time employer eliminated my job. Up to this time I'd lived a charmed life with robust health and a successful career. Well today was my 66th birthday and I finally feel great as my heath has recovered and my years of saving and investing have paid off. I'm debt free and have an income equal to what I made on my prior job. And I've moved beyond my identity being tied to what I did for a living. I've also completed my estate planning and investment strategy, dotting my eye's and crossing my tees, so to speak. I'm part way through "Swedish death cleaning" and now planning my first trip to Portugal.
I want to thank you, Tina and Norm. Your advise and example have really helped me is so many ways. I began watching your videos while I was still sick with covid. Your advise gave me something to focus on while I was recovering. I hope I bump into you sometime in the Algarve. Best wishes for safe travels, good health, and continuing prosperity.

Thanks, but I'm in the US. I don't know how our Social Security system compares but I've seen many bloggers here claim that the average monthly SS amount is about $1500 month US. Currently full retirement age here is 67. Of course, by the time I reach that they may have increased the age and reduced the pay even further. Even so, I find your videos reassuring. Each one gives me some insight and new possibilities to consider.

When we are in Europe for extended periods and are going to be driving a lot we do a short term lease through Peugeot or Citroën. You save money and avoid insurance hassles. You get full comprehensive insurance, with no deductible and no extra charges for CDW or LDW. It' the best if you are going to be there more than 21 days.

I traveled on a plane for the first time since the pandemic recently from Edmonton to Toronto and was surprised that both outbound and return flights were almost full. I had to travel for work and even though I am double vaccinated, I was hesitant.
When I returned just over a week ago, I started to feel ill about 24 hours later so I self isolated. I live alone and hadn't visited anyone when I got back. Symptoms got worse so I booked a test and found out I am positive for covid. My symtoms started a week ago last Saturday and it basically felt like a normal cold. I am almost symptom free now but it just goes to show with these new variants, you can still get Covid despite being vaccinated.
My advice is to stay away from planes and public transport until these variant cases have dropped off considerably again.
Everyone stay safe and have a good weekend

Being vaccinated protects you from severe attacks of Covid-19. As you experienced yourself, the symptoms are flu like and unpleasant but no longer deadly. We ( Netherlands) now have as of yesterday let the distance rule go. Still masks in public transport. We are asked to 'be safe' be careful, be sensible' while we find our way living with Covid. There is a light burning somewhere at the end of that tunnel. 🙏 🇳🇱🙋‍🇳🇿

Great topic and video :) I'm also in Ontario Canada and used to go on regular shopping trips with my friends to the US. I bought myself a yearly travel insurance policy from CAA and it was great! it wasn't expensive at all and gave me that peace of mind when we went on these weekend excursions. I think I also used CAA insurance for going to Ireland and Hawaii 10 years ago. It pays to shop around and read that fine print too.

You can get travel insurance with your credit card but be super careful you understand what it does and doesn’t cover especially if you have pre-existing conditions. There is a travel agency in Canada that offers a policy through Manulife that covers pretty much everything including a cancel for any reason clause. Definitely shop around so you won’t ever be faced with a big bill in another country.

Initially I planned to accompany my son to Liverpool UK for his studies. But because of the quarantine procedures plus a lot of uncertainties, I dropped the idea of accompanying him for him to get settled there. We had to do a lot of adminstrative procedures online which normally I would not. (Eventually UK did revise the procedures to trevellers from Malaysia beginning 4th October this year). Luckily there were other students like him, and they travelled in a group. I agree that the pandemic has changed a lot of things which we used to take for granted while travelling.

Another great video. Very useful information. Did you confirm with BMO that it's okay that your rental contracts are back to back? Silly of them to limit the rental period to 30 days in that case. I thought of using this hack before but thought I would have to use a different credit card for each 30 day period. Your system is easier. Please make a future video on selecting accommodations in Portugal and what to look out for. Thank you and keep up your excellent work.

Hi guys, I recently came across your videos and absolutely love them, am learning so much from them! My husband and I retired back in the summer of 2019 and very much like you did, sold our house in the GTA and planned to travel the world and rent something nice and decent in Southern Ontario. We actually spent the 2019-2020 winter away and arrived back in Canada only a couple of days before the WHO declared Covid 19 a Pandemic. So we have been renting a tiny condo in a small town north of Toronto and have been stuck in Canada and unable to travel because of Covid as we had originally planned, in the meantime we have noticed rent fees climbing up by the day, basement apartments now cost what a condo used to cost two years ago!!!! Please guys, could you please do a video on retirees who are in our position (sold house and renting), tips of how and where to find in these days, less expensive places to rent (without having to move up to remote places like Sudbury!!), what are our options, which ones are better, condos or rental buildings (we don't like the shared laundry room rentals though), any tips you may have, you seem to know so much more that we do. Thank you so much, stay safe :)

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Prices have risen in the last couple of years, we don’t do condos and look for rental apartments and in Ontario they have rent control. So you have to bite the bullet on the rent at time of leasing then your rent increases around 2% per year.

Now that was very interesting to hear about the age issue with travel insurance. I have asked my husband ( that's his part of our ship) about this. He is totally unaware of any age limits. We have selected a ongoing travel insurance as it covers us anywhere, including weekends away, overnighters in our own country as wel as having overseas specific coverage. As we are both 67 and 68 respectively, we have had no increase in fees or changes to our policies to date. Knowing the dutch culture, it would be called Age discrimination LOL! The car insurance issue has never arisen for us. We don't spend that long in any other country - except me when I go to visit the children and I then have access to my own vehicle and a NZ driver's license. Here too travel insurance policies are adapting to Covid situations, naturally at a cost. As I am not keen either yet to cross borders it hasn't applied to us as yet. Great information. Food for thought. 💖 🍷 🇳🇿 🙋‍ 🇳🇱

Thanks for sharing your travel experiences and knowledge. My wife & I are planning to spend 3 months in Portugal in 2022. And would like to pick your brains.
Aside from regularly withdrawing currency from an ATM, have you found a more economical method of accessing Euros? In the past we have simply made purchases with our credit card which charges a 2.5% fee on each purchase plus the exchange fee.
Also we will rent a car and appreciate learning of your experiences with local/regional rental companies. Would you know of a regional Co. we could contact in Lagos or Lisbon?
