    Our tendency, as we come close to our retirement years, is to focus only on the financial aspect and plan for that. The truth is there are many transitions that need to be planned for that will have a significant effect on your wellbeing during this season. In this video I'll take you through 4 such transitions and offer some advice on how to handle each one. Let me know how you're planning on dealing with these four transitions in the comments below. I'm a physician. I plan to scale down and work part-time and get a full night sleep every night once I've established solid savings. I think I will be sad and my brain will be sluggish if I completely stop working. Work isn't just for income, but it's a life purpose, being useful and making a contribution to the world.

    In the movie "The Shawshank Redemption", Morgan Freeman & Tim Robbins played roles as inmates in prison & were having a conversation about freedom one day on the outside world. Morgan had this one line that I'll never forget "......I don't think I'll ever make it on the outside, I'm an institutional man now, just like Brooks was....."
    I'm 58 & have been retired for about 1 1/2 yr now. Retirement is indeed hardly just about financial well being (like what most people think). It has all the factors which you have meaningfully narrated & explained....Your video gave me comfort & enlightenment, thank you so very much!

      @FJI That is so great to hear. Congratulations on your retirement! I love the illustration you shared from The Shawshank Redemption. Many people feel caught in that institutional world and can't see the way out. For those that can't completely escape inspiration is key. My hope is that this (and all my) videos brings that inspiration. Thanks for watching and, more importantly, sharing!

      Thanks so much, Celina! The market would have you think that as long as you have enough money everything is going to be ok. Fact is, many who have enough money end up going back to work. Why?

    I am retiring three days before my 57th Birthday. Here in the UK that is not that unusual, if you have enough money to do it. I am fortunate that I am not defined by my job. I have lots of other interests and activities. What does hit hard though, is knowing I will lose my professional standing. I will be an "old person".

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That loss IS one of the mental transitions that we all go through. Many professionals hold on to some function of their job for a time to ease the transition. Writing, speaking or consulting are common choices. Have a great retirement, Gordon!

    I have two 4-hour part-time shifts, but the loneliness is still killing me.

    Work associates were all I ever had.

    After working 40 years I feel my husband and I have been institutionalized mentally. He has just started going part time and I will be retiring next year. I am worried about how to fill my day. I am working already on the physical fit part. I plan to keep my friends from work but I hope to replace with new volunteer social friends. Finding ways to get my brain functioning I hope to do things I haven’t done before. Work identity and what my purpose is going to be redefined with my new self. The loss is going to be challenging as I feel I have a huge loss of losing my parents. I’m excited to spend more time with family and not be rushed to get back to work

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Laura, it seems like you're covering all that bases. That's good! Be aware that work friends may fade away as time goes on. Not being a part of the daily routine has a way of weakening the connection. That's why I like your idea of seeking new volunteer/social friends. The tendency in retirement is to let our social circles shrink and by the time we notice it's tougher to find new friends. The key is to seek new friends from the day you retire. Joining interest related groups can help. Having new people over for dinner is another great way to expand those circles. Both techniques we regularly employ. Thanks for watching and letting me know how/what you are doing!

    I think the definition of retirement is very personal and at least a little different for all of us. I also don’t think anyone should start thinking about this on the last day of work, this isn’t the last day of school before summer vacation! Thanks for this, I agree with everything you said.

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, Peter. I think our cuture pushes the "classic retirement" ending and so many assume that's what they should aim for. When they get there many find it's not for them. I fear having no meaningful things to work on. I am sick of doing what I do and definitely want to do something different. But not
    Sure what I want to do after retirement. Definitely do not want to study more of what I do now.
    You are correct with your list , but I makes me more concerned because I know I have no plan. I have devoted so much time to my career I have lost my dreams . Maybe after some rest I will awaken to a new role of interest.

    Why would you want to retire?
    Everyone who retires talks about finding a worthy endeavor, socialising with others, giving structure to their time, giving meaning and purpose to their lives.
    In other words people want A JOB in retirement.
    Duh

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I dislike it when people say, "I'm keeping busy." As if they are looking for things to fill the time until they die. Why not seek a new purpose? The third act of life is a fantastic time to explore new expressions of yourself, things your career got in the way of.

  • @Essays4College

    Why do so many retirees just sit home all day?

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because that's what they've desired to do their entire lives. Many hated their work, so retiring from it was the objective from the start.

    • @Essays4College
      @Essays4College ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulPeixoto That makes sense Mr. Peixoto. Do you think retirement is a bit different then for those who are, or were, self-employed?

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Essays4College Yes, I think it's very different for most self-employed. I'm one of those. I do the work I do because I love it. It's not physically demanding so I can continue to do it into my retirement years. I have complete control as I can slow down with each passing year and take off any time I choose during the year. This is where retirement is changing. It's not a line drawn in the sand, a date at which you expire.

    • @PaulPeixoto
      @PaulPeixoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's very often the case, Itcajh. That's why I advocate for creating your own job. This third act of life is the perfect season to go entrepreneurial. It's never been easier (due mostly to tech) and provides a much better, supplementary income stream than being a Walmart greeter.

    • @Essays4College
      @Essays4College ปีที่แล้ว

      Even that's rare. Most of the retirees I know don't work. They are home most of the day. I'm curious about this though. People talk about saving and their 401k and all that but when it actually comes to that age they are not doing most of those things or spending the money they worked so hard and long for! Why is this??
