It’s interesting that you found the smaller enclosure more successful. I know that young geckos far prefer smaller spaces due to the sense of safety it grants them. Maybe this persists in some adult lizards.

Yes I agree , it's good to keep open mind to all possibilities if a gecko's normal habits start to change.

Thank you for the helpful video. I've been thinking about getting a bigger enclosure for my guy since he's getting bigger, but this video made me feel better about the enclosure I already have.

Ive been thinking about this a lot lately. My 6-month Gargoyle is in a 67 Gallon 36x18x24 bioactive setup. He does hide during the day, and sometimes we cant even find him. I am using a Wise camera to monitor him at night, and he explores every inch of the enclosure. He jumps all over the place and seems to be trying more and more daring leaps as time goes on. In line with the video, he doesn't eat super often, but is not losing weight. I do wonder if he is occupied and stimulated enough to only eat when necessary, versus eating out of boredom in a smaller enclosure. I know breeders like geckos to put on weight faster, but after seeing how much my little guy explores and jumps, I dont think I could put him in a 12x12. Its easy to think these animals don't move around much if you only observe during the day, but get an IR camera and watch what they do at night. Some of his jumps are 6 plus inches from branch to branch, so a 12x12 just wouldn't provide enough space for that after adding plants and hardscape.

Great info, There are no hard set rules on setups. A happy thriving gecko is the most important. I encourage people to try different things so we all learn and help each other. Never stop learning...Thank you!

How long can they stay in the 8x8x12

Depending on if your gecko has big or a small structure up to 15- 20 grams. Some geckos have a big growth spurt at that size. Have the next enclosure size ready to go! 👍

I like to use a 12x12x18 for a 30gram gecko , that size would be too big for a small gecko
