EOC was forced onto the players and underdeveloped. Even today there are certain NPCs and interactions that are broken because of it being based on pre-eoc combat.
You do know the game was massive before EOC was released, right? Obviously there would be a few NPCs that they missed when converting them over to a new combat style.
There's a small mistake on number 5, eoc mode scales the Constitution stat by a factor of x100 while legacy mode scales to x10. So you would see 5000 in eoc or 500 in legacy with 50 Constitution.

To me osrs is beautiful. The style is unique nowadays. Nothing ugly about it. My friends just don’t get the vibe of osrs... so I’m all alone by myself lol
Controversial opinion: When they took out wildy and free trade, looking back on it, I really was happy with that update. A little sad because it was like the EXACT same day I met a friend during band class and we were gonna go PK on RS after we got home bc we found out we both played it (even though I dont PK) however, with the wildy being safer, I started farming green dragons for money. Got my ranged up there too. It was eventually my first 99 and I went pretty hard until EoC came out. I honestly think if I never got that good at the game because of that, my flame for runescape would have died out and I wouldnt be addicted to OSRS right now :)
I actually don't really play runescape but I find it endlessly fascinating. The community, style, and game loop are all really appealing to me and the history and stuff makes it even more interesting.
Solid video. Definitely fun to watch. My only critique is that "updates" like OSRS, legacy mode and the return of free trade and the wilderness were a little bit more like scale backs to actual updates that did significantly more harm than the scale backs did good. That's just kinda my thought since, I'm sure there were tons of people that left when eoc was released, but when they brought in legacy and osrs, it definitely only brought back a fraction of that player base, making it hard to feel like that "saved" runescape. :/ Regardless, The video itself was super solid, and being a very old school veteran who was around when RS2 launched, I couldn't agree more with number one!
I remember back in 2004, I was in 6th grade (middle school). After school I went to the public library to meet up with all the neighborhood kids to do kid stuff, like kickball, four square etc... I ended up finding ALL my friends there literally sitting at all 11 or so computer's in the library playing this game with these bad graphics with each other. I didn't really understand the concept of them being in an online virtual world communicating with each other. Until then the most co-op play stuff I did was console gaming at my friends house or my own or whatever. So as time goes on for a few weeks I keep seeing everyone playing this game, and not wanting to be a follower or anything kinda snubbed it and brushed it off at first, as like something that would die out, but again and again these kids wouldn't go outside after playing this game, and eventually there I am making an account because I didn't wanna chill by myself anymore lol. This would be my first MMORPG experience. I stuck with this game through all the trials in tribulations it went through, I was there before slayer was even a skill, where dragon longs or dragon battle axes were king. If you had a blue party hat, you were a serious O.G. This game did so much for me, allowed me to learn how to type, experience great communities in real life with friends and with clans n such back then, for example the castle wars!! omg castle wars, especially when desert treasure was released, and I saw someone with ancient staff and ice barrage for the first time, it was mind boggling. Some great times, I played a bit of OSRS when it got released, but when they swapped and updates graphics, it was time for me to head out, I disliked everything about the direction they were heading. But this game allowed me to play on my craphole PC I had back in '04 with dial-up n all that LOL. I don't play any more, I actually play old school World of Warcraft now. Thanks Colonello for the nostalgia, you can hopefully pick up where mote pl0x left off. I feel a lot of your stuff is better anyways.
I’m gonna address the elephant in the room. The removal of free trade and the wilderness was actually one of the most game-saving updates. They explained in their documentary that the company was having a lot of problems with banks due to online scams that were directly stopped by the removal of free trade and the wilderness. Basically, though it drove a lot of players away, Jagex would have shut down if they didn’t do it.
Losing free trade would suck but I wish that wildy was safe for the first weekend of every month. There's so much content that most players won't bother with unless they need to because they don't want to get pk'd.
you forgot the removal of the wilderness as its own point to save runescape. without that update runescape would not have survived due to banks no longer supporting them.
The problem with EoC was that it was given the green light by Jagex before the player base even got to provide feedback. Our feedback did nothing, and the provided options were biased towards the update.
Free trade and wilderness being removed wasn't a mistake. It was a neccesity to keep the game from being declined by all credit card companies and being sued for huge amounts of money. After the legalities were solved and everything settled down, they brought it back.
Its funny how most of these are just fixing their mistakes. Jagex literally has been a dumb company throughout the years. Once Andrew Gower left in 2007, everything was ruined. But they also let new hire's of the company work on "EOC" basically creating an entirely different game. Whoever came up with eoc is the biggest idiot in history for runescape.
Dude I completely forgot about the internal company struggle. I remember the main guy left and someone else took over who did not actually play the game and was out of touch with what the players wanted. He ended up leaving like two years later and a much younger guy took over who actually played the game and said he'd listen to the player base. Soon after however the game started taking on major changes and in 2013 was changed completely with visuals resembling those of diablo 3 and things were only getting worse for the game.

They made the wrong choice, but you can be damn sure they didn't just rush those updates without thinking. Lots of planning and research went into them, and they must have been aware of the drastic blowback they would receive. That just goes to show how necessary those updates must have been.
If this is supposed to be updates that saved RS, the the free trade limit and removal of the wilderness update itself should probably have been at number 1. No one liked it, it really hurt the community, but without that update RS would have had to close its doors as banks were threatening to not allow card payments, which would have ended membership and thus RS, due to the real world trading problem that was causing credit card numbers to be stolen. It’s an update that caused a massive loss of the player base, but without it, there literally wouldn’t be a Runescape.
I played rs3 for a while the grind in rs3 is way to easy and not fulfilling really, but old school definitely fills the void and I’m not just bank standing and bored of the game.

Well sure if your only intent is to get 99 i can kinda agree but you are not actually done after that(especially if you are a skiller). Good thing about xp rates in rs3 is that you can actually reasonably get 120 lv/200m xp in that game.
I think that we are nearing a 2014 day before EoC version of RuneScape. Possibly 07 becomes quite close. I'd like the graphics and overlay to come out. I would love to see the rapier back but it is true that the rapier ruined the taken because it is the only weapon that we used anywhere and everywhere. Tons of nostalgia day before EoC version of RS.
Removal of wilderness and free trade did save RS. They had no choice. Credit card companies did not want to work with them due to rwtraders using stolen cards on a large scale.
OSRS at its launch wasn't really all over the internet, it didn't even reach the highest milestone which would have pushed more dev resources into OSRS at launch. I didn't hear of it because I was totally out of the RS community for years now. It got more popular later.

i remember i lost a lot of money when they removed the trade limit and wildy since i had just gotten 99 cooking and had like 30k cooked sharks that dropped to a fraction of the price .... also to get around the trade limit when i use to rent out my sara sword was to trade them unfinished maple bows since maple logs were like 15gp and unfinished bows were like 100-300gp each ( i can't remember been so long)

The recent update that brought fletching and duel-wielding to free players was pretty good. It certainly got me playing again even if only once or twice a month. I don't think the Player Polls were as influential though. As it was one of many things that split the player base between haves and have-nots. Free players can only vote on the most basic of issues further hammering in that Jagex really doesn't give 2 cents about us...
It's sad to see that jagex is completely ignoring the people who want the 2008 / RuneScape hd graphics back. They speak so much about player interest , but they are just sitting on the problem and not realising it. Rip
2:15 legacy mode is underpowered. The game was rebalanced and designed to work with eoc (using all the abilities and all that), so not using that puts you at a disadvantage

Originally played from 2005 until Free trade and Wilderness removal. Came back at 2010 and stayed until EoC. Came back again when Oldschool released the GE back into the game. When Jagex fucks up, I leave. When they fix it I return. Simple as.

Anyone who follows rs3 will know that this is true. The dev team is just as passionate as they were at the beginning. Past the corporate and economical problems surrounding jagex, the actual heart of the company, the dev teams, are always looking out for what's best for the games.
people that think osrs is full of bots, are somewhat telling the truth. But they're also dumb at the same time. Personally from playing as a member, i can say for the most part it seems a high majority of each sever I play on are actual players. I enjoy mining, and I rarely even see more then one other person mining the popular area with me. (I do mine on servers with like 500 players).
I don't completely understand all of the hate for rs3. I started playing Runescape 2 what, 10 years ago? This is when everyone had dial up and I couldn't even watch youtube without buffering. But even I saw that rs3 brings a depth to combat that the now old school runescape just doesn't have. I know theres tic abuse and swapping gear, but the skill required for that is trivial. In many cases its click on someone and wait for someone to die.
As much as I hate EoC RS3 was still alright until the horrible microtransactions came into play. Double xp weekends were also really fucking dumb. If OSRS never happened I'd either be playing private servers or moved on entirely by now.
Most of these are just updates to mistakes jagex made themselves like taking back certain things or reversing updates which just shows u how scary it is to put ur time and effort into a game that jagex already killed 1 time
I think the free trade re-implementation update did more harm to the game then good unfortunately it killed bounty hunter and pvp worlds which was one of the reasons i quit the game. PvP died korasi sword prods ruled the day and everything was just unprofitable except pvm
Tbh I stopped playing because of eoc and Work. But honestly EOC is super fun once you understand it , makes pvming so much more challenging which is great
Legacy mode was a gimmick implemented to appease players who quit out of a stubborn resistance to change. Those who accepted EOC found that it is actually adds a lot to the game, and never looked back (except to burst in the abyss for mage training).
@@threeep4023 The point why legacy mode is dead and nobody uses it is that it is pitted against EoC so that everyone who uses it is usually at a great disadvantage at 99%+ of all combat spots or bosses because of it. Almost all higher bosses require integrated use of abilities like freedom/anticipate/surge/resonance/barricade to be efficient (or even survivable) which makes legacy be completely unsuitalbe for large portions of the game. This means no Vorago, no Solak, no AoD, no Kalphite King, no RotS, no Raids etc And if you are into slayer or other skill training you will also have less exp/h so it isn't recommendable either because it also is slower. The one spot I see legacy being used is to polystrike at duel arena staking, but that is a very specific use for gambling purposes.
God I hate myself... I left Runescape after EoC, like a lot of people did. The problem is that I never came back, not after all the things Jagex did to make it better. I've not logged into my account since 2012 and I really want to now, but there's just one problem... I no longer feel like I belong there. I've missed out on too many game changing events, I wasn't there to see the game change. I hate the feeling of being in an alien environment and I could not wish for anything more than to just...fuck that feeling off and play RS again, but I just can't

It’s weird to see people give So Wrecked so much credit for making a petition. 2006scape had 400k accounts made and a good 180k unique players, the server that was shut down just 2-3 months before old school was even announced.
At this point they must as well shut down RS3 and start to work on a new Runescape in a different continent with completely different quests, areas , minigames, skills, lore, etc. Keeping it along the same style of osrs, but with higher poly graphics and not the shitty pasted on crap they use in rs3. Giving us a reason to return to play runescape again, with new places to explore and new monsters to fight. Beings release on the phones and steam just saved RS again. It would be safe to assume if they didn't revert some of these updates the game would have died long ago. One important "update" would be Runescape mobile. This brought so many new players, some which now is at a lvl where they can do high lvl content.
I think Runescape would have a few years left at best with OS. I played from 04 to early 08 and come back in 16 and can't stop playing.

Its funny how most of these are just fixing their mistakes. Jagex literally has been a dumb company throughout the years. Once Andrew Gower left in 2007, everything was ruined. But they also let new hire's of the company work on "EOC" basically creating an entirely different game. Whoever came up with eoc is the biggest idiot in history for runescape.
Dude I completely forgot about the internal company struggle. I remember the main guy left and someone else took over who did not actually play the game and was out of touch with what the players wanted. He ended up leaving like two years later and a much younger guy took over who actually played the game and said he'd listen to the player base. Soon after however the game started taking on major changes and in 2013 was changed completely with visuals resembling those of diablo 3 and things were only getting worse for the game.
Free Trade and wilderness removal wasnt a mistake, it was a neccessity. The game was about to go bankrupt due to the credit card frauds happening.

@@brycegriffin9271 Hindsight is 20/20, so this has no real bearing on their judgment at the time. They made the wrong choice, but you can be damn sure they didn't just rush those updates without thinking. Lots of planning and research went into them, and they must have been aware of the drastic blowback they would receive. That just goes to show how necessary those updates must have been.

If this is supposed to be updates that saved RS, the the free trade limit and removal of the wilderness update itself should probably have been at number 1. No one liked it, it really hurt the community, but without that update RS would have had to close its doors as banks were threatening to not allow card payments, which would have ended membership and thus RS, due to the real world trading problem that was causing credit card numbers to be stolen. It’s an update that caused a massive loss of the player base, but without it, there literally wouldn’t be a Runescape.
I played rs3 for a while the grind in rs3 is way to easy and not fulfilling really, but old school definitely fills the void and I’m not just bank standing and bored of the game.
Exactly. The people saying eoc is great are retarded I used to play rs3 and I only had mithril never bossed I just pk'd a bit but overall I was like why the fuck do ppl still play this. Now I play osrs I have the same account but didn't mind they gave me a lvl 3 now I can't stop
@@twitchypaladin8859 It is great for multiple reasons. Like the combat is unquestionably better and more versatile in rs3. A lot of osrs players say the xp rates are stupidly high. Well sure if your only intent is to get 99 i can kinda agree but you are not actually done after that(especially if you are a skiller). Good thing about xp rates in rs3 is that you can actually reasonably get 120 lv/200m xp in that game.

I think that we are nearing a 2014 day before EoC version of RuneScape. Possibly 07 becomes quite close. I'd like the graphics and overlay to come out. I would love to see the rapier back but it is true that the rapier ruined the taken because it is the only weapon that we used anywhere and everywhere. Tons of nostalgia day before EoC version of RS.
Old school is the update that saved runescape for me :)
Removal of wilderness and free trade did save RS. They had no choice. Credit card companies did not want to work with them due to rwtraders using stolen cards on a large scale.
Frankly they could have handled the RWT situation much better back then instead of removing free trade.
Basically all of these updates are jagex trying to fix things they fucked up big time on and already had massive feedback about from their playerbase.
The main problem with legacy mode is that eoc is WAY more powerful for pretty much every activity
OSRS at its launch wasn't really all over the internet, it didn't even reach the highest milestone which would have pushed more dev resources into OSRS at launch. I didn't hear of it because I was totally out of the RS community for years now. It got more popular later.

i remember i lost a lot of money when they removed the trade limit and wildy since i had just gotten 99 cooking and had like 30k cooked sharks that dropped to a fraction of the price .... also to get around the trade limit when i use to rent out my sara sword was to trade them unfinished maple bows since maple logs were like 15gp and unfinished bows were like 100-300gp each ( i can't remember been so long)

Do you guys remember when EOC came into the game? Jagex said after an amazing amount of great feedback we’ve decided to release EOC earlier than intended. I was like the fuck, no one wanted EOC and they said that it was so well received 😂

in all honesty, EOC saved RS, regardless of how many people hate it for stupid reasons.
The recent update that brought fletching and duel-wielding to free players was pretty good. It certainly got me playing again even if only once or twice a month. I don't think the Player Polls were as influential though. As it was one of many things that split the player base between haves and have-nots. Free players can only vote on the most basic of issues further hammering in that Jagex really doesn't give 2 cents about us...
I disagree with legacy mode, it was actually more harmful than anything, I could write an essay what it broke
It's sad to see that jagex is completely ignoring the people who want the 2008 / RuneScape hd graphics back. They speak so much about player interest , but they are just sitting on the problem and not realising it. Rip

2:15 legacy mode is underpowered. The game was rebalanced and designed to work with eoc (using all the abilities and all that), so not using that puts you at a disadvantage

People were saying the graphics were bad back in 2004. I remember being in 8th grade and when I told people I played runescape they were like ewww that game looks so ugly.
On OSRS, I might like to pick on it and call Old schoolers drama Llamas but I still see the reason for my OS cousins to exist and many of the updates I wish had RS3 equivalents. hope your guys stick around hehehe

Came back at 2010 and stayed until EoC.
Came back again when Oldschool released the GE back into the game.
When Jagex fucks up, I leave. When they fix it I return. Simple as.

Anyone who follows rs3 will know that this is true. The dev team is just as passionate as they were at the beginning. Past the corporate and economical problems surrounding jagex, the actual heart of the company, the dev teams, are always looking out for what's best for the games.

people that think osrs is full of bots, are somewhat telling the truth. But they're also dumb at the same time. Personally from playing as a member, i can say for the most part it seems a high majority of each sever I play on are actual players. I enjoy mining, and I rarely even see more then one other person mining the popular area with me. (I do mine on servers with like 500 players).
I don't completely understand all of the hate for rs3. I started playing Runescape 2 what, 10 years ago? This is when everyone had dial up and I couldn't even watch youtube without buffering. But even I saw that rs3 brings a depth to combat that the now old school runescape just doesn't have. I know theres tic abuse and swapping gear, but the skill required for that is trivial. In many cases its click on someone and wait for someone to die.
The best thing that Jagex ever did was OSRS, no doubt. The player base and popularity of each game in itself should easily be proof enough.

As much as I hate EoC RS3 was still alright until the horrible microtransactions came into play. Double xp weekends were also really fucking dumb. If OSRS never happened I'd either be playing private servers or moved on entirely by now.
Most of these are just updates to mistakes jagex made themselves like taking back certain things or reversing updates which just shows u how scary it is to put ur time and effort into a game that jagex already killed 1 time

I don't know how EOC would have been polled after the poll system was integrated. EOC is fine now after the launch bugs are out of the game
I think the free trade re-implementation update did more harm to the game then good unfortunately it killed bounty hunter and pvp worlds which was one of the reasons i quit the game. PvP died korasi sword prods ruled the day and everything was just unprofitable except pvm

Tbh I stopped playing because of eoc and Work. But honestly EOC is super fun once you understand it , makes pvming so much more challenging which is great

I've never seen anyone in the legacy worlds. Or using legacy mode. Y'all complained for no reason.
Legacy mode was a gimmick implemented to appease players who quit out of a stubborn resistance to change. Those who accepted EOC found that it is actually adds a lot to the game, and never looked back (except to burst in the abyss for mage training).
@@threeep4023 The point why legacy mode is dead and nobody uses it is that it is pitted against EoC so that everyone who uses it is usually at a great disadvantage at 99%+ of all combat spots or bosses because of it. Almost all higher bosses require integrated use of abilities like freedom/anticipate/surge/resonance/barricade to be efficient (or even survivable) which makes legacy be completely unsuitalbe for large portions of the game. This means no Vorago, no Solak, no AoD, no Kalphite King, no RotS, no Raids etc
And if you are into slayer or other skill training you will also have less exp/h so it isn't recommendable either because it also is slower. The one spot I see legacy being used is to polystrike at duel arena staking, but that is a very specific use for gambling purposes.

I left Runescape after EoC, like a lot of people did. The problem is that I never came back, not after all the things Jagex did to make it better. I've not logged into my account since 2012 and I really want to now, but there's just one problem...
I no longer feel like I belong there. I've missed out on too many game changing events, I wasn't there to see the game change. I hate the feeling of being in an alien environment and I could not wish for anything more than to just...fuck that feeling off and play RS again, but I just can't

I love OSRS, but graphics I dislike, I wish there was a way to make it like RS3 graphics but OSRS everything else.

reeeheeheeeheehee you're forgetting the petition with over 50,000 signature to bring a 2006 version back. Many people wanted a pre eoc, yeah, but the motivation came from that petition started by So Wreck3d.

It’s weird to see people give So Wrecked so much credit for making a petition. 2006scape had 400k accounts made and a good 180k unique players, the server that was shut down just 2-3 months before old school was even announced.

At this point they must as well shut down RS3 and start to work on a new Runescape in a different continent with completely different quests, areas , minigames, skills, lore, etc. Keeping it along the same style of osrs, but with higher poly graphics and not the shitty pasted on crap they use in rs3.
Giving us a reason to return to play runescape again, with new places to explore and new monsters to fight. Although I may be delesional and just having a heavy case of nostalgia that will never ever be able to be fulfilled again.

Not gonna lie. I hate the wilderness and would’ve liked the change. PK playerbase are honestly small and just whine louder than everyone else. They also almost all bot on alts constantly to fund their losses and legit players can’t keep up

I don't personally use legacy but at times it has its uses like when I'm skilling. But for those who prefer legacy I bare no grudge I feel this was a good update. It should always have been optional

Beings release on the phones and steam just saved RS again. It would be safe to assume if they didn't revert some of these updates the game would have died long ago. RS has a long history of doing what they want with no regards to the community untill they face they the declining numbers. Then there like ok boys lets take a poll lol
