@strawman x worst years for film? Since this movie came out during the pandemic alongside with other movies that's been nominated for an Oscar, it's technically not that worst year for films, it's a bit of a distraction to say worst years for films. I'm sure you're just expecting some blockbuster big budget CGI movie that didn't came out in 2020. Also not many directors edit their own film, this is just to keep her vision. I love Nomadland, Chloe did great on that movie
@strawman x Those things (having traveled with these people for a year in their same means, written the book, and consulted for the adaptation of her experience to the film) literally makes the film exist. It's odd for you to even take the time to deride it.
Nomadland was so authentic and genuinely honest storytelling. Brilliant directing and acting. Truly a riveting human story about invisible Americans who are struggling to live with integrity despite hardship.
Chloé Zhao became the first Chinese American woman to win the Academy Award for best director in the Oscars' 93-year history. Her film “Nomadland” also won awards for best picture and best actress....
I’m so excited to see The Eternals. Her filmography is so different from anything Marvel has ever done, and that of most of the past directors they’ve used, I can’t wait to see her take on it. The best MCU films are the ones with a whole new spin on them from an outside-the-box director - CA: Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Ragnarok, etc.
I think Taika Waititi, is the closest we got so far, he bring a lot of humanity into his films. Mostly his other films that are not marvel. He wrote most of his films but he didn’t wrote Thor ragnarok which unfortunate. But he will be writing the sequel.
If your library is a participating institution on Hoopla you can stream it there too for freeee! Not a lot of people know about it but you can just make an account with your library card. I'm a Boston public library cardholder and that's how I watched it.
"Songs My Brother Taught Me", the title, seemed copied from a typical Chinese song, named "Mom Left Me a Song", which is extremely a popular children song in China since 1950s last century. A romantic, sad, emotional, and a mellow one, has touched tons of thousands people's hearts with tears when you sing it or hear its tones till now, and hv no an end but eternal...
Chloé Zhao and the film's success prior to and leading up to the Golden Globes and the Oscars were initially praised on Chinese social media outlets, as well as official state-controlled news media. After the Golden Globes, Zhao was scrutinized by Chinese netizens over her remarks in a 2013 interview for Filmmaker magazine, in which she described China as "a place where there are lies everywhere". In response to the controversy, Nomadland was pulled from theatrical release by Disney China, and the 93rd Academy Awards were censored by Chinese media outlets along with all mention of Zhao or the film on social media. Chloé Zhao became the first woman of Asian descent honored, and only the second woman to win a Golden Globe for directing since Barbra Streisand in 1984.
It's unfortunate that the Chinese government won't even acknowledge her historical Oscar win nor will they allow her film to be shown in theaters across China.
Chloe Zhao, You are such an impressive young woman. Exceedingly proud of you. Truly hope u will use your celebrity status to make even more positive changes by telling inspiring real life stories of Chinese people & cultures. There are so many that you must share with the world, Chloe, to correct much misunderstandings about China and her people out there. Congratulations.
SIri: "You have 1 appointment today. Live interview with Seth Meyers for Late Night." Chloe: "Hmm, better wear my nice tie-dye." Siri: "And reminder, it will be on national tv at 11:30 PM." Chloe: "And do my hair. Nah, looks good. Let's do this!" Love it! 😛😝
Real and normal, I like it, too. Positive vibes from New Hampshire and remember to be kind to each other and yourself during this pandemic and social crisis
Nothing going on, it´s just that the general public is utterly unfamiliar with Nomadland, almost nobody watched it in the theaters where they were open (domestic gross TOTAL $2m, worldwide $4m), the buzz you hear is among cinephiles only, and that it just a tiny minority compared to the mainstream audience.
Or maybe a better shirt or a comb might help... I’m sure she’s super talented. No doubt. But my 1st instinct was to click next. And what’s with the swiveling. On a Seth Meyer show..chill vs slob. Just saying...
@@JeffreyGoddin It is a big hit among critics and most cinephiles, and the film is winning all the awards, but the general public doesn´t care for it, because the subject matter is dull and depressing and most in the mainstream audience just want popcorn munching, "theme park ride" movies as Scorsese put it.
Editing is a nightmare in my opinion, but for director's that edit (Alfonso Cuaron comes to mind)... the movie _becomes_ the vision the director is aiming for.
Just FYI, her step mother is a beloved comedian on Chinese television for decades. Regardless of some sensitive comments she made about China which caused some controversy, she is considered by most Chinese as one of our own.
I've been homeless on and off since the late 80's, it is positively illegal to have no money in America. You cannot ''wander lonely as a cloud'' here without attracting law enforcement, resentful people who call you names and ''shoo'' you along as if you're a coyote on the back porch.

I met her while she was at NYU and I hung out with her circle. She definitely was very driven but also very spoiled by her rich father, very insecure person. Hope she has grown to have more inner peace since then, and not because of the external accolades she's been given.
She directed, adapted the book to a screenplay, produced and edited the film. I mean, give her all the awards, this woman is fantastic.
I didn’t know that. Thanks for mentioning her achievements. That’s inspiring. May you be healthy, happy, safe, and have all you need.
@strawman x Nah it's super rare that directors edit their own film.
Jessica Bruder bought an RV, traveled the American West for a year, wrote the book, and consulted for the adaptation.
She also deserves credit!

Her Best Director Oscar is just a matter of time.
She´ll win this year, she has won every award so far this Awards season, BAFTA, DGA, Critics Choice and Golden Globe.
And a well deserved one too,I'm tired of explaining it is to people who think it's coz of SJWs or whatever
I think about 1 week from now.
