    His physique at the 77 Olympia is for me, the essence of bodybuilding. Yes, there are Yates, Coleman and Cutler but they all looked big and awkward. Frank was like a panther. Sleek, strong, muscular and athletic.

    I always admired Zane's physique as being more aesthetic and more attainable. He trained hard and smart, never pushing the envelope in trying to use massive weights like some of his contemporaries did. Having said that, he's being disingenuous when he talks about his steroid use. He used, and if he hadn't, doubtful he'd have attained his finished look. Back then, the best guys took at least one kind of steroid but not nearly in the amounts that the guys are taking today, not to mention the modern-day dudes using insulin, Hgh, SARMS, and lord knows what else. They were a little more health-conscious forty-something years ago.
    Some of the people commenting ask why Zane doesn't talk more about what exogenous substances he used. Easy. If he said, "I used Primobolan, Dianabol, and a shot of testosterone cypionate once a week" then it would diminish his achievements in the eyes of many, as if all the hard training and careful dieting meant nothing and taking a few pills and shots meant everything. Well...there is some truth in that.
    However, Zane, like Arnold, Franco, Lou, Sergio, and all the other greats of the '60's, '70's, and early '80's, trained brutally hard and relied more on hard work PLUS fairly minimal drug usage. JMO.

    • @chadoliver2966
      @chadoliver2966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      100 percent agree with your statement here. Zane clearly used anabolic steroids. However like you said back in the Golden Era guys did very low dosages compared to the crazy amounts the pros use today. Hence the reason he never got over 200lbs on stage. If he took huge amounts he would of been Arnold and Sergio size. Instead he focused on symmetry and being ripped on stage and had the best classic physique of all time.

There’s literally no way especially with his size at that time and the amount of training he says he was doing. His would waste away into nothing. His BMR alone would surpass that. During his day steroids weren’t banned so maybe he had no idea. He himself never gave a definite answer on them and left it really vague. The effect of taking steroids in bodybuilding is the reduction in testosterone that the body makes naturally. Once bodybuilders go off synthetic testosterone, their bodies struggle to make natural testosterone afterwards. Natural bodybuilding is the gold standard, because the natural body builder has that physique for life without dependency, he/she only needs to keep up their training. Natural bodybuilders age well without the risks. Frank Zane used synthetic testosterone conservatively and I think that is why his physique was more aesthetic and athletic compared to the bulky awkward monsters we see today.

      @@yasashii89 It's more likely the combination of the two. Exercise is 'stress' on the body. Proper nutrition is how your body fixes the damage of stress. What Zane is saying didn't adequately allow my body to repair itself. As a result, my body was under constant stress for many years. Constant stress will disrupt many processes in the body, including hormones.
      If you plan to exercise for a long time, I recommend finding a nutritionist and not taking the advice of people that had success in the 70s. Their memory and knowledge are incomplete by today's standards. e.g. Frank does not include the caloric values of his amino supplements and oils into his caloric intake. And if zane gave a detailed list of exactly what he took back then......you can almost guarantee, many viewers would have a notepad and pencil out, taking details......and l don,t think frank wants people to go on these drugs, in their quest to emulate him. If it was true that testosterone feeds cancer then you'd see men in their prime get cancer, including prostrate cancer like Frank said, and you don't see that. Testosterone declines as we age, estrogen goes up from the testosterone to estrogen ratio becoming worse and also probably for environmental reasons, so I believe the research shows that it's testosterone being low and estrogen being high that probably causes prostrate issues.

    • @coherentmedia
      @coherentmedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, it's prostate, not prostrate, and it's true that most older men die with prostate cancer, but not necessarily of it. I don't know if they know for sure if testosterone causes prostate cancer, but it may well fuel it once you have prostate cancer. Have your PSA level checked before and during taking a cycle or before and during TRT, and it might be an eye opener to you at the level changes. Affects on the prostate may differ depending on what steroid you use - of course the most commonly available is probably testosterone cypionate or enanthate, both of which are more androgenic than some others. I'm not sure if there are any studies comparing the affects on the prostate of more anabolic steroids to more androgenic steroids, but that would be beneficial to know. This is why women that want to remain feminine take mostly Anavar, because it's more anabolic than androgenic. But for older men, I'm sure if you were to ask, most urologists would recommend against taking any additional testosterone. As you age, you'll see your energy levels and sex drive drop and your physique declining, and you'll have to have the debate in your own mind about the risks/rewards of TRT. It would be good questions to ask the bodybuilders that are over 65 - do you have prostate cancer, have you had your prostate removed, do you have to take something to shrink the prostate so you can pee - things like that. When you're young, you don't really think of these things. Think about the treatments that they have for prostate cancer - cutting your nuts off, testosterone reducers, taking estrogen, etc.. Not a great prospect - losing your nuts and growing tits at the same time.

You can get pretty close to that without drugs, so his claim of doing one cycle, perhaps a year, leading up to a big contest makes sense. Think of a middleweight boxer coming in at 160 lbs. somewhere around Zane's height, rock solid with extremely low bodyfat. Those guys walk around at 175 or so before dropping the water weight and they aren't even bodybuilders trying to get big. Gotta give these older guys credit there was no internet, gurus, nothing!!!! It was all trial and error and talking to other guys at the gym. Shit I started bodybuilding in 1998 and there wasn’t a fraction of the info available that there is now
