5 minutes ago, I just was thinking about trains. Then I opened youtube to explore some more about them. Yours was just posted. Awesome timing!🎉
That's awesome!
same, the timing is impeccable
Happens with me with a lot of things. I swear there is mind reading tech in our smart phones!
Yes, a video on different intersection designs sounds awesome, and is exactly what I'll need soon.
Also rapid camera movements, circular ones in particular, can disorient and dizzy when the one watching does not have control of said camera.
yes and yes. was about to post the same feedback on the constant camera movement, made the video difficult to watch for me.
I literally had to spot watching, the rapid movements are awful!
Ive watched so many train videos today and this is the first one to talk about buffers and handling inputs/outputs. That's what I was looking for. I am happy to figure out building a train line myself, something all other videos focus on, but understanding the logic behind the inputs/outputs is what was more difficult to work out. You answered so many questions regarding this part of trains with how you demonstrated. Thanks!
bro keeps swirling my head 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫!!!
ye like super interesting video but impossible to see XD
Yea pointing at something by moving the mouse in circles works when it’s a mouse pointer in a presentation, but not so much in a first person video. /facepalm
Many frustrating nights on factorio prepared me for this
Factorio train signals and systems are slightly better though and i find it easier to do.
Well the path signal checks (or allows a train) if its path is free. If you have a train which wants to do a left turn and another one comes along from the direction the first train wants to go via its left turn they both are allowed in the same section. Something you can't do by simply blocking off the whole intersection. That's the major difference. I felt like it wasn't so clear in the video.
Best Greetz!
Can you elaborate on this?
@@Churumbele In case of intersection managed by block signals if any train in the intersection then others will wait. Which lead to "one train on intersection at the time" situation. In case of path signal, game check if path which train want to take through intersection is clear(not entire intersection) and if it is then train is free to go. You can imagine 2 trains coming from opposite directions and both want to go straight. In that case both "paths" are clear and they would go through intersection simultaneously, but in "block" scenario 2nd train will wait until first train leave intersection
@@Churumbele
Well, the path signal doesn't only check if a block is allocated by (an)other train(s) it also checks for the path, hence the name. If the trains have a path each which doesn't cross the path of the other, both are allowed in the block. Therefore you need to use path signals on crossroads and junctions, especially if you have a dual rail system (each rail does have its own direction, like IRL).
If you'd use block signals for crossroads and junctions you'd kill the actually possible flow of the railroad b/c the block signal literally blocks all other trains from getting into its block as along as a train is occupying the block.
If you have a train coming from the left and wants to take a right turn and yours is attempting a right turn on your side then a block signal would block the other train until yours has left the block while the path signal would allow both trains to enter the block b/c your paths do not cross.
Using the path signal is (to me) mandatory at crossings and dual rail system junctions.
I hope this helps and feel free to ask if there is anything you want to know :))
@@BruceCarbonLakeriver thx!!
@@mustakragen6103 thx!!
Any other factorio players, its the same for signalling. Just regular signals are block signals and chain signals are path signals.
no, its not the same at all
im factorio player here and while similar path signals dont work like chain signals. if they did it would be a lot easier.
@@Dark_shadow4056The only difference is that path signals allow multiple trains in one section if the paths don’t overlap. Otherwise they’re the same.
I heard Satisfactory copied trains Factorio but did it poorly. I don't know why though, so I ended up here.
@@GermanZindro That is exactly how it works in Factorio. If two trains have paths that don't overlap (one goes left and the other goes right) then they're able to move through a rail at the same time. For example, if you have a huge bi-directional network, two trains can still use the same rail at the same time if they're going in different directions, their path doesn't cross. This works because only the chain signals ahead are "allocated" (turn yellow) when a train is moving through a path.
Coming from 30k hours in Factorio, trains are pretty easy topic for me. But I can't get over how you don't have to make crossing tracks, you can just throw an overpass and merge single lane. That's honestly such a huge thing!
600 hours in satisfactory since update 3. and i never got into trains since they scared me. thanks for this vid
Yeah have about 600 myself, and finally built my first train in my last play through… just one though. 😅
Did you just belt everything over before? 😱
@@Salty_M4 yes
@@JesseO-nh3us Damn, respect!
@@Salty_M4 it takes a lot of time but does give a very cool look, random belts everywhere
I'm having a problem finding any videos with loading and unloading trains to make sure each load/unload goes to the right place with the right amount. An example would be I want to have a smelting factory that sends out ingots to 3 different factories (Screws, Rods and plates), Currently I am making 1800 ingots/min and I want to send 600/min to each factory evenly with 3 different trains and then eventually send trains from each of those factories to send those materials to higher tier parts (Heavy modular frame factory needs like 1270 of the 2400 I will be making). That plus an explanation on the stop settings for the timetable with the and/or wait for x seconds.
Thank you for the explanation!! I've used block signals before but had no idea how easy it would be to use the path signals to get multiple tracks going.
Yea, just knowing the path/block signal for junctions is a must! Glad you got some use out of the video!
Great video! If I could offer one piece of advice for your videos, when you're pointing at things with your crosshair don't jiggle/move/jerk the crosshair around to provide emphasis. Just keep the crosshair still and we'll know what you're pointing at is what you're talking about, and it avoid the jarring eye movement for the viewer :)
Every time I start a new game, I have to re-learn how to design bi-directional trains and how to setup their automated paths. Wish this video would have covered those topics as well.
I also would like a bi-directional video. I did it once by accident, but was never able to replicate it lol
I think l have something that might help you. If you add another freight platform and put a smart splitter between the first freight platform and the buffer, set it to overflow to the new platform. You'll maximize how much you can move. I learned this recently
Could you try to explain this to me in a way that makes sense, because i'm dumb but i'm curious and I want to learn
The buffers are there because the animation for the platforms stop output/input. You always, always need a buffer to handle the lost time. There is no way of avoiding the time loss when loading/unloading
Excellent presentation. Clear and simple.
I am looking forward to see the video on how to make rail blueprints. Hopefully also simple, attractive, and designed to keep your tracks aligned to the world grid. There are so many rail videos out there but it is very hard to find one that achieves all 3.
Coming soon!
@@KyloBuilds Yes, I figured. It was obvious you were going in that direction. Especially since you already have a general "curves" video with the main bit of the knowledge needed.
I love the video, it's really helpful. However, the spinning of your camera every few seconds when you've just built something or are trying to point it out is giving me motion sickness.
I have to agree with this... Keep the camera as still as possible and Change angle slowly and smoothly. This is basic video cam knowledge...
YES
How lol
Yes it is
100% need a video on different intersections :D Grewat videos thanks!
Great explanation, but that circle crosshair/camera movement is causing nausea...
Yes, More Intersections, please! Sir. Fine job and I/we look forward to the future ones as I will also need these soon.
A 4 way and if possible a roundabout (IDK if that is actually a thing in trains) unlike automobiles. Thanks again!
Roundabouts are a thing yes! Should be coming soon!
I don't believe it's right at 5:53.
You say that that the path signal is red if there's a train in the vicinity.
Path signals allow approaching trains to reserve a path through the junction. So when a train arrives, if there is a clear path out of the junction (and the exit light is green), and no bits of track in the junction have been reserved by another train, it will allow the train through.
So, it will be red IF its path through the junction is not used by any other trains in the junction.
What's cool about this is that trains coming from opposite directions, that don't turn off, can still travel through the junction, at speed, and go past each other without stopping.
youre correct the way he describes it is if the was a block signal placed on the entrance and exit of an intersection
@@ryanm7868 I guess he didn't want to overcomplicate things. Can be a tricky subject as all games use real-ish systems that slightly differ!
I can't take train knowledge from TTD, TF1/2, WAR:SR, Factorio etc. without something blowing up :)
extremely well explained! Thank you
The way I look at it for Block Signals & Path Signals;
A Block signal looks at the next Block ahead & blocks the train if the next block is occupied.
Meanwhile;
a Path Signal looks at the next 2 Blocks. The Path Signal checks if the last of the 2 Blocks is occupied, then the Path Signal checks if there is anything blocking the train that is currently stopped at it.
With path signals, you can have multiple trains passing through a junction at once, as long as all the path signals agree that none of the trains entering will block each other.
A Block Signal only junction is all stop signs.
While a Path Signal junction is more like a traffic light.
Good content, but I'm getting motion sickness when you circle the mouse to indicate an area.
I use very few long trains on single track travel so like CN Rail, path signals before hopping on the main lengths of track so basically it acts like a single large intersection. At least when I first get trains I do that.
you uploaded this at the perfect time. thank you
Too many people focus on the tracks and blocks of the trains.
I want to know how to set the settings of the train stations. How do I make sure a train doesn't leave a station empty? Can a train drop off items and pickup items in the same station? What if I want a train to only spend X time loading/unloading, regardless of whether it empties/fills completely, how do I set that and why would someone need that?
I agree. It'd be nice to show the step by step setup with the arrows and platform arrangement as well as settings to make sure it runs properly.
Dont move the Camera pls... :-) omw to toilet .. but GOOD Video TY
Ah yes train....
I think i would use kilometers long span belt network instead
NOOOOOOOO 😂
thats what my girlfriend did but she gave up that during our 1.0 game
If you just have one big factory this might work fine. But if you start to set up dedicated factories for specific products that you produce in large quantities, using specific recipes that can't just be thrown down near any single node, and then distribute to everything upstream that needs them (steel, plastic, rubber, etc.), it is so much easier to manage and expand that distribution using trains than belts. Plus, you don't have to upgrade train tiers when you hit a new milestone like Mk3 miners and want to improve your throughput.
The most basic set up is a single train on ONE track shuttling an item from one factory to another. No loops, no tracks to cross, no use of multiple trains. Show how that works as a basic set up.
Thank you for this!!
Main problem with trains is they are annoying to put down and if you make any mistake at all it takes even longer to figure out what the problem is.
Meanwhile you could have just placed belts in a fraction of the time and moved on to something else without a headache.
I unlocked trains like 2h ago and I was looking for some tips. Thanks! Perfect timing! Liked and Subbed
Before you set up to much rail I would highly suggest looking at some double rail blueprints they make setting up for train line’s really easy and quick!
Nice video. Short and informative.
Very good explanation 👍🏼
I just unlocked the train milestone and I don't think im ready for that lol
Thanks for this - would like to see how you configure loading and unloading in the freight configure settings of the station. For some reason I think it should be simple but I'm confused about it.
That was really helpful! Thank you! Yes please! A video on train track intersection designs would be very helpful too!
Do not roll screen
I get screen-sick
STOP SPINNING THE CAMERA
Besides making me want to barf, good video.
If you make a video about intersections could you make one specifically how to add a “spur” (I think that’s the right terminology) for a train station? I don’t like the idea of having a single train block the entire lane of travel for the network. I have tried but I always seem to have issues with the signals
Love the info but man your movements in this video made me dizzy, just a lot of shaking
I'm very new to trains but I've grasped how to set them up now.
Something I'm still unsure about, that videos don't seem to cover, is how to set up stations in a scalable way. I was trying to make trains send resources back to a central station, but as that central station got longer, I had to add more and more empty platforms and empty freight cars to send the resources to the right position at the central station. Would you create many stations in one location to address this? Or something else?
One thing about trains is you can have multiple trains drop off items at the same station. As long as your belt sleep can handle the total speed, you can "sushi" belt trains. Sometimes that can help save space when you have lower throughput.
@@KyloBuilds Hmm I guess that does make sense. Could lead to sinking a lot of excess but it's a good idea I hadn't properly considered. Thanks for the advice
How do you deal with inputs that exceed a single belt?
I got 3x bauxit miners overclocked and theyre producing: 780 - 780 - 600. How would you load this into your train?
In an ideal world, Id balance the 3 belts into 4 and feed them into 4 train freight stations, but then you run into issues when one of the stations becomes full. The same principle applies if you use programmable splitters with overflow. What do you recommend?
Could send 1 belt into 1 freight each and call it a day, but then I kinda want to keep track of how much im putting into each freight if im using a 2nd bauxite train no?
why do i have the feeling i saw this vid a long time ago?
Impossible! unless you are a time traveler... 👀
Its exactly like factorio then. I should be good
I’m not as familiar with factorio, but that does seem to be what people are saying lol
you should look up what 'rule of thumb' means and decide whether you should be saying it so often. 'for multi train setups, you must have one more section of track than trains' is just exactly how it works, its not a rule of thumb.
So i have built my first train track today, and i have some issues. The train will not stop at the load station, i went with train track loop that kinda looks like this (>-
If you make a video on intersections, I'll watch it at least twice.
Do i hear 3? 👀 I plan on making a video on some easy intersections very soon!
This might be a very primitive question, but how does distribution management work?
Example: if you have a train with 2 wagons, filling in iron and copper seperately in one single station, but unloading the material on two seperate stations that have only one platform to unload.
Will it pick the right wagon for that?
Or what will happen if the slot for loading copper is in the front of a station at one place, but in the back in a second location?
unfortunately, you need every station long enough for your longest train if you want to have multiple stops for it. each wagon needs its own platform. train engines only stop at the station, they are not going to position a second wagon on a single platform.
if you want to use double headed trains and terminus stations (train drives in foward and out backwards), getting the correct wagon to the correct platform gets complicated because you have to avoid situations where the train would turn around, like driving trough a normal station or a turnaround loop. that would flip everything around... dont mix and match train types.
most simple solution would be, more trains, just long enough for each task. and maybe smart splitters plus sink to filter the cargo at each unloading station, to prevent stuff getting on the wrong belts.
path signals = life
YES!
It would have been nice to touch on why you didn't put a second belt in the middle.
I struggle with getting consistent throughput with my trains. Dose anyone have any tips?
Nice. Cheers.
i still dont get why to use trains at all
wouldnt conveyor belt highways be more efficient? also that wouldnt need any power
Trains are much more efficient over long distances.
Also, power really is really a non-issue mid to late gane
Its better than belts for high throughput stuff over long distances, however it still kinda sucks because train stations take tons of time and space to setup
You explained the path signal WAY wrong. You said it asks if there is a train in "this vacinity" as you motioned toward the intersection and then said; if it says yes; the train will stop... etc. What it actually does is reserve a path for the train so that 2 trains can travel the intersection at the same time without crashing when possible. The way you described it.. you might as well just use block signals because that's what you described.
I still don't see why I should bother setting up a train system. Seems redundant.
🤢😵💫
Sounds easier than factorio so should be cake…right? Lol
It's the same as factorio

had to stop watching after one minute. please hold still a few moments. this camera movements makes me dizzy!
this is NOT a beginner guide, never played the game, I'm just trying to setup my first train and can't figure it out and you start talking about efficacy and I still can't even get my train to move lol
Make sure the train station is powered. The power will carry through the rails and you should be able to hop in the train and pick a destination
@@chefboyardong1008 Oh I found what was my issue watching another video... my station wasn't pointing in the right way
I dont understand why you have a belt going between the 2 points. Surely thats what the train is for?
Trains go brrrrr🚅
trains are a waste of time
I have never used trains, or trucks for that matter, I just don't see the need for them when you can just use conveyor belts.
