Well the PAL version generated the 1st meme "All Yours Base" craze back in 2001 on forum, sites and message groups, before social media were even a thing, so it's logical for this to follow onto the Japanese version as well! :D LoL!
The biggest troll move in all of this is that the time you beat this for the 35th time in a row, they throw at you a random ass cheat code. Said cheat code lets you select level, see the endings, and other few things.
Does the cheat code, which also works on PAL, as well as the more recent NTSB-U (yes, Toaplan FINALLY officially remade/re-released this game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive) release also let English speaking people see the endings that was in the NTSB-J original Zero Wing as well, or were those endings removed from the PAL and NTSB-U versions of the game?
I love it when games do this, where you play it multiple times and the game just keeps telling you "Dude, no. Just stop. There's nothing more to do, just stop playing".
Ending #15 may have that "Kani kani" bit be referred to as a gag, but, given the context, I think that the implied meaning is the sentence that says, "We are so crabby, SO crabby (with you)"! Ending #16 can be translated as this, "CATS hereby gives you an order. 'Work swimmingly, Sudara (Indian worker caste) rice field worker, smoothly work, and work swimmingly'! Go on, try and say it"! (I am somewhat still inexperienced with Japanese, but that is the best that I can make that dialogue sound on here.)
I think the secret code isn't incorrect/misleading. It matches exactly, as long as you know 西 represents 'right' here. I'm not 100% sure this is the reason, but... I think west may be associated with the right hand in Japan, unlike here in the west where you think of it being on the left side of a map. I've seen articles in Japanese talking about left & right (ひだり/hidari & みぎ/migi) where they describe migi/right as being west when you're facing south. I don't know if this is common, but I've at least seen it. (Or maybe they were just trolling.) Thus: A - A button ビ/bi - B button C - C button う/u - up だ/da - down (first character of katakana ダオン/daon) れ/re - left (first character of katakana レフト/refuto) 西/west - right (because reasons?)
I find is extremely ironic that they couldn't translate the introduction properly yet could spell CONGRATULATIONS right, something most badly-translated games get wrong.
I think that Ending #10 might be a misspelling of the name John Clement. John Clement, in turn, is the author son of the famous mystery author Blaize Clement, who made the Dixie Hemmingway Mysteries. John Clement is the author of The Cat Sitter mystery series, and he also took over his mother's mystery series upon her death.
I honestly wished that Endings #4, #5, #8, #9, #14, #18, #20, #22, #27, #28, #29, #31, #33, and #35 had been left in the original PAL version of the game. Hopefully, they are in the PAL re-release, as well as the more recent NTSB-U release, as well as the other endings, but with the options to see them in English or Japanese.
I think that Ending #33 really said , "You're THAT determined to keep this war from ending with accepting my victory over you and your kind? Okay, I give up, good sir! Ha ha ha! I'm so happy, I'm so elated, I'm so proud of you! Finally, you are indeed a worthy opponent, one who is better than I"!
That's all well and good, but what defines which ending you get each time?! The final score, the time it takes you to beat it, random....?! When I beat the game once in Hard Mode I got Ending 3.
The first three endings corrospond to what difficulty you play on. Easy for ending 1, medium for ending 2 and hard for ending 3. I think maybe if you play on Easy or Medium though you can beat the game a second/third time to progress through the endings?
Also, considering that this is a Genesis game with no save feature, this means that you were originally meant to play it 35 times in a single play session
@@GuppytheCat , why did people play Super Mario Brothers 2 (Japan/For Super Players/The Lost Levels) and All Night Nippon (Japan) Super Mario Brothers 24 times?

I feel like #4 through #35 were all made at like 3am one night by a really tired guy staying up late in the office or something :)
Was expecting a great end at first, i beat the game, i got ending #1...
I was like "WTF! I played Zero Wing! Not Parodius!"
*AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CLIMEN!*

Never actually managed to beat it, stuck at Stage 8.
I find is extremely ironic that they couldn't translate the introduction properly yet could spell CONGRATULATIONS right, something most badly-translated games get wrong.
a winner is you
Yes, so probably the intro was a kind of chinese restaurant menu typ thing - screw up the language on purpose to get attention
I believe I remember hearing the translator was only fluent in Spanish...
CONGLATURATION ! ! !
They misspelled Congratulations in the arcade original.
I read all of the secret endings in the original "All your base" voice
Fun.
Intro: brave shipmaster orders his warriors to escape, so they might survive to save their people
Outro: dancing prunes with racist lips
Maybe they are like a Japanese knock off/Brand X version of The California Raisins?

That can-can rendition has popped up in a lot of bootleg Mega Drive games. Huh.
You mean the one in the Super Mario World/Squirrel King bootleg?
#30 is pretty concerning...
For the one with the CATS guy, I wonder if there's someone who made a speak version of those endings

#30 was (I bet) made by someone who thought: What does our target audience want? I know, urine.
If he tried it, then he would be regretting his horrible life decision.
#23 is roughly 'Base-Goes-BOOM'

There's no way this is real
Holy crap, I just realized that the music at 7:40 is "We Put Our Faith in Blast Hardcheese'
ending 8 is similar to monkey island ending, that at the end of credits it display a label "shut down your computer and go to sleep"
Gomashio is my doo-doo too.
Ending 10: do you know my name? It's JOHN CENA!
Something tells me zero wing was more memey than it lead on
Chrono Trigger, eat your heart out.
I wonder how difficult is round 35...

The ending 11 imagine if he say he is John cena.
chrono trigger has nothing on this
#19 is my favorite
This feels like the multiple endings meme
#1 didnt make sense, #2 i liked. that music sounds like it should be in a middle school show. and #3 is sad to me.
awesome music!!!
西 character has similar shape to 右
Please do the very same video, but get the Megadrive Zero Wing translator to translate all the ending to engleshe.
Awesome !
you're a legend

Each time you complete the game it shows a new ending, but you can also use the code at the end to see them more easily.
