I have the canon answer for your multiple Pokémon in a Pokéball question. In Pokémon episode 185 (or Season 4, Episode 28) titled "The Light Fantastic", there are a group of Remoraid that are said to be impossible to catch. As it turns out, they are impossible to catch because when someone throws a Pokéball at one of them, the Remoraid group together, and since, as they explained, the Pokéball can't catch more than one Pokémon at the same time, the Pokéball just bounces off.

So as much as i hate that Ash's Torterra SUCKED in the anime i think i found a theory why. And it's a simple one too. Ash's fighting and training style is mostly based around speed. It's a thing we saw in the Anime too when Turtwig evolved into Grotle. When it got heavier after evolving it couldn't move that fast anymore. So Ash trained Torterra like most of his other pokemon on speed wich indeed made it alot faster but on the other hand robbed it it's Tankynes. I mean look at Pauls Torterra. It didn't move at all and almost won every battle it was in. Again it's just a theory.
