  • The Velar is Range Rover's midsize luxury SUV. On the outside you will find full LED lighting, optional wheels, and bronze trim. On the inside you will be greeted by leather seating, 11in infotainment system and panoramic roof. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbo inline-4 producing 274HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Is the 2023 Range Rover Velar a BETTER luxury SUV to buy than a BMW X5?

Currently I own an F-Pace which is built on the same platform as the Velar. Some say it's the sporty version and the velar is the luxury version. The price gap between the two is way to big to make that jump. Yes you definitely get more vehicle with the Velar but I don't think it warrants a $15k jump.

With the cost of gas ⛽️ the 4 cylinder engine will be your friend especially for driving around town as many people do with this vehicle. Where it’s lacking in performance it’s makes up for in handling with all wheel drive. That said if you want performance Porsche cayenne is waiting for you.

Mixed gauges is weird, I kinda wish the tach and speedometer were just complete gauges with the screen in the middle. Love it but I just do not see $75,000, especially with the 4-cylinder. I see like $42,000 or something. It's got the prestige, looks, and finish of a Range Rover which I love but an Acura RDX for half the price 35,000 less is just a better deal all around unless your sitting on FU money and don't care.

    Great review Joe.
The Velar is still a very stunning looking vehicle.
I’d say that Velar would get cross shopped against
Audi Q5 Sportback & Q5 Coupe body style.
    BMW X3 / X5 / X6
Benz GLC / GLE in either the normal SUV body, or Coupe body style.
    And various other brands etc
    Depends on your budget etc
    I’d buy one with the
    P400 6 cylinder motor.
As u said, the 4 cylinder motor is adequate
This was an optioned up S model
Not an SE or HSE model
Due to semi conductor shortages, rear USB’s are currently optional features, rather then being standard.
That instrument display might be standard on an S model.
I’d pay a bit extra and order an S with full digital instrument display.
Full digital dash probably standard on
    SE / HSE
    OR
Possibly also optional on these models at the moment, due to semi conductor shortages ?

I’ve had a red 2020 Velar sport when it was still a new striking design. I would get SO many looks and head turns and compliments. You felt like you were in spaceship and the drive height was great. The interior double screens were new and high tech but buggy. Unfortunately, there was a lingering noise from the arm rest area they couldn’t fix and the radiator had issues that needed to be fixed. But most importantly the 4 liter engine was incredibly slow. It was very unbearable at times I’d see Hyundais faster than me. It got to a point where $75k was just not worth the lackluster performance. I ended up trading it in for a Alfa Stelvio. Also a 4 cylinder but that sucker is fast. I’m paying a lot less and I shaved 2 seconds off the 0-60. The Stelvio gets a lot of looks as well. I think the v6 velar would’ve been a a better option vs the 4 cyl plus noting beats a the opulent look of a RR but but at that point, 90ish thousand would buy me a high performance SUV. Not worth it. Love my Alfa.

Why does he not give the BMW X5 spec after the RangeRover? Maybe this is why, just a couple I picked up on. Center screen RR 11 inch Something, BMW 12 inch Something. Next RR towing 5000 pounds, BMWX5 towing 7200 pounds, next RR analog dash, BMW All digital dash, RR no USB in rear, BMW USB-C times 2 in rear. RR one hatchback door, BMW X5 rear door plus tailgate to hold your stuff in when opening hatch unless you want tailgate down. Totally avoided all HP and 0 to 60 specs, teehee. I did think this was a nice SUV but he did really bad trying to prove to me this is a better choice than the BMW X5. I did really like the rear wiper under the spoiler though, that did beat BMW X5

The Velar is beautiful inside and out, but honestly the P250 engine should be skipped since carrying 4000lbs of Range Rover is definitely overworking it. The R-dynamic P340 with the 3.0L Inline 6 far better suits the Range Rover upscale feel in terms of power, smoothness and the 48V MHEV start-stop system is significantly better than the base 2.0L turbo.
That said, like any other Range Rover product this is very overpriced. But alas you need to pay to play with the RR name on the front and rear.

The Velar is not an SUV in my book. It's a crossover... great looking vehicle but you're not getting anywhere near the SUV category. But, it seems nowadays that anything other than a traditional sedan is a SUV due to America's desire for SUVs and the industry slapping the SUV tag on everything.

We have a 2023 Velar as a loaner while our Sport Supercharged Dynamic gets some routine maintenance (oil change, etc.) done at the dealer, and I hate this thing more than any car/SUV I've driven in 10+ years. The lack of buttons and knobs for the stereo and HVAC is absolutely insufferable, plus the screen collects fingerprints like it's the FBI. EVERYTHING must be controlled through that horrible touch screen and it's ridiculously laggy, too. Not to mention that I have to disable the auto stop/start (which violently shakes the whole car) through that screen every single time I start it, and then drill down several more screens to disable the intrusive and infuriating collision avoidance and lane departure nannies. I'm not sure which engine this one has, but I could jog faster to 60 mph. In addition, I have to dislocate my wrist to be able to push the start/stop engine button because it's hidden behind the steering wheel at an almost completely adjacent angle to the dashboard, the pop-out exterior door handles are a total pita, opening the split-lid center console by your elbow is inconvenient as hell, the transmission is even slower to react than the touch screen, and the wallowy suspension makes me feel like I'm seasick when I go around turns. I'm not sure why anyone would pay anything for this hunk of garbage, much less pay the exorbitant amount the out-of-touch idiots who designed it think it's worth.
