    If the kv is the same on both motors, you can assume the speed would be the same since kv x voltage is the RPM. I have found no advantage to expensive branded motors although it is worth getting a half decent esc. Hobbywing is as good as any more expensive option imo

    • @MatthewSimm
      @MatthewSimm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, however, I could be wrong, but if the motor magnets are stronger, it should have more torque, allowing that motor (although having the same KV) to gear up much further without over heating and therefore, achieving a greater speed.
      But, I have not tested this, I hope to soon 😀

  • @Reindeer911
    @Reindeer911 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OK, you make a very valid point re: bang for the buck. Also, for most hobbyists, the cheaper equipment will work fine. HOWEVER, your video doesn't tell the whole story, or why someone would want to buy the Castle Creations motor. It comes down to build quality, what the motor is ultimately capable of, and probably longevity. What I mean by this (amongst other things) specifically is the RPM limits of the motor. The CC Mamba series are ALL capable of 100,000 maximum RPM. The Surpass motors on the other hand are limited to 50,000 RPM with some exceptions. Their 9000kv motor has a max of 70,000 RPM for example.
    Another difference is that the Mamba ESCs are built with a cap pack (at least mine does), whereas I don't see them on the Surpass ESCs. What that does is to smooth out ripple voltage, or a series of spikes in voltage as the vehicle draws more power. The ripple voltage is another element that can destroy your ESC over time.
    I know you've been doing speed runs with a quest to break 100 mph. Same here... When you're talking about such extremes is the reason why you would want to consider the more expensive motor as that difference in RPM capability with the proper gearing could mean the difference of hitting your goal and having the motor survive or not.

    • @MatthewSimm
      @MatthewSimm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh course dude I fully agree. The video was far from in depth but rather a look at what possible with cheaper electronics with more to come.
      I personally don't think that everyone is going for the highest of speeds possible, but most will probably want between 100-150mph out of their rig, at least to start off and what a great way to do so than with a cheap setup.
      With castle, you definitely need to know what you're doing, especially going for those extreme speeds and pushing the limits of the system.
      I'll be the first to admit I'm not a pro and do not have a full understanding of speed runs, it's more just for fun for me but I'd love to learn more, for now, I'll stick to trying to keep it in a straight line hahaha 😆

    • @MatthewSimm
      @MatthewSimm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries bro! In my personal opinion, if you want the best, you will pay to get it, however, it can be diminishing returns, depending what your plan is for it!

    • @BigBallBearingturBo
      @BigBallBearingturBo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MatthewSimm from my limited research it seems like the best place to start, especially on a budget RC, is the ESC. The Rlaarlo 006 hit 78 MPH with only the ESC being changed out (stock 2847 motor and gearing) and that sounds like way more speed than I'd ever need!

  • @steveblackbird5174

    Excellent comparison Matty, I've used the Surpass hobby esc's and motors in everything from crawlers to my speed run 144001's and rate them very highly. The price point for such quality is fantastic!!
    The rocket fans are something else too, pump so much air it's ridiculous lol.
    The castle systems I've never run but there's plenty of vids of them on fire and desoldering themselves lol.
    There's a website that links esc's to the generic Traxxas and Spektrum ESC's and Traxxas uses a few castle systems.. no wonder why so many catch fire..Though I've never had an issue with any of mine.
    Spektrum are Hobbywing (win win!!)
    Yes the Arrma 1/7th scale onroads are by far on another level...there's a reason why the top speed run guys use them.

    • @MatthewSimm
      @MatthewSimm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are definitely some of the best value for money, I'd love to do a budget comparison with more brands! Good idea?
      Castle is really good and no doubt I'm sure they've had their issues, none for me personally (thankfully haha) but if you are looking to push every mile from your rc car and run some silly power setups, then castle is definitely the way to go but I highly recommend knowing what to do haha

    Can you please put the SurpassHobby part numbers in the description (including kV)?
    I'm running the Rocket 4076 with 1700kV in the Traxxas Sledge, combined with a HobbyWing Max6 (M2C Racing motor and ESC mount). The Traxxas XMAXX is running with Max5 and a Rocket 5962 in 980kV version (M2C Racing motor and ESC mount too). Paid 127 AUD for the 5962 and 92 AUD for the 4076 (living in germany and ordered at Banggood).
    The motors are a great value, but the ESC's need some further development. Go with HobbyWing and combine with SurpassHobby Motor => best value for the buck.

    • @ManuelOrtizification

      im running Surpass ESCs in 3 trucks, never had an issue. if you get the program card you can tune it to better suit your vehicle too. Hobbywing hass been my go-to for years, but Surpass is what i recommend for anyone thats looking to save a bit of money without sacrificing performance ;)

    • @hayden401
      @hayden401 ปีที่แล้ว

      That combo was the 4076 1700kv with their 120a ESC. They don't really have part numbers, just motor dimensions and KV.
      The USD against AUD has taken a BEATING. Hence being a little bit more than they used to. I sell them for very near what you can get from China. So, local shipping, supporting a fellow Aussie and they're very decent qaulity, from our testing.
      Obviously it isn't as big of a motor as that hobbywing, but I just sent Matt what I had and he's made a video with what he has!
      If you have any questions, feel free to message me :)
      Cheers, Cameron.

    Do not buy the cheapest unless you know what you are getting. Surpass motors have a great reputation. So do your homework everyone. If you are going to spend money, consider investing in a sensored system. You have better responsiveness and feel at low RPM which makes for a more quality experience without all the cogging. A used sensored system is better value than a new cheap sensor less combo (if working well)
