      Hi Connor, love your vids man. Not really a question for the bass. I’m looking to get an NX-7 soon after watching some of your snippets with one. I’m wondering if you’ve any experience tuning down to drop F# and if it holds up well enough as I know the scale length isn’t quite up to the standard with that tuning.
      If you could let me know it would be greatly appreciated as it’s currently the only barrier stopping me from purchasing!

      @@DeimosPlayz Hey! I've never gone past drop Ab but you could probably get there with a 74 gauge (i use a 74 for drop Ab and its pretty nice and tight).
      Saying that, you'll have to use the 74 gauge string to file away the nut a bit behind the zero fret or your string wont fit. You want to make sure there's contact between the string and 0 fret! I dont know if this helps but hopefully it does!

      @@ConnorKaminski I’ve no experience yet with the zero fret but I guess I’ll check it out when it comes to it! Thanks for your help, keep on rockin 🤘🏼

    This was super interesting. Appreciate how honest and thorough you are. I really wanted one of these but settled for an Ibanez EHB since they are much more affordable and offer similar ergonomic benefits such as weight and balance. Cheers!

      Man, I wanna save my money and go with the Ibanez , I'm just not a huge fan of how it looks. These strandbergs just look so cool to me!

      @@GentlyShredding Yep I feel you on that, I got an EHB1005SMS (short scale) and it's really nice to play and sounds decent but I don't like the finish on it really at all. The shape has grown on me but I do prefer the Boden shape. Also I was recently able to play one of the more affordable Standard series bass guitars and it was really good. Despite the shorter scale length I found it easier to play than the Ibanez. I think I'll be upgrading at some point, just gotta save up $$!

    Interestingly, Nolly was referring to how his pickups are wired in parallel with each other, not internally, which was already the case initially on your bass. Dingwall has that rotary to go bridge solo / bridge parallel with neck / bridge series with neck / neck solo, and this does not change the internal wiring of the pickups.
    It still holds true however, that changing a series wiring to a parallel wiring, whether it be a pickup internally or when combining pickups, will always retain more highs.
    Nice that you got the bass how you wanted it to be👌

    • @francoishtzl157
      @francoishtzl157 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And the pickups on the NG2 are both internally in Serie

    • @arunkarthikma3121
      @arunkarthikma3121 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not that it retains highs, moreso that the pickup's circuit will have a resonant peak that is much brighter.
      This is because you're changing the Q factor, the inductance and the resistance of the circuit. There are several low output active humbuckers that can accommodate for these variables without using parallel, and achieve a bright tone

    • @arunkarthikma3121
      @arunkarthikma3121 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But yeah, parallel is just the most practical way to achieve that tone.

  • @aliambassador
    @aliambassador 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    TIL the difference between parallel and series wiring. Thanks, great review!

    • @arunkarthikma3121
      @arunkarthikma3121 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An oversimplified explanation: Series basically runs one pickup's signal straight into the other. THEN into the output. This adds resistance.
      If you wire in parallel, the current gets split between both coils. This basically HALVES the resistance.

    • @arunkarthikma3121
      @arunkarthikma3121 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, series ends up sounding very close to single coils, with some slight differences in inductance and the resonant peak of the pickup.

    Thanks so much for the in depth review and all the tips! As a big Strandberg fan who owns several of their guitars I have been hoping for a long scale version of their basses as well. I already am an owner of a Musicman Bongo 5 which sounds great but I want a long scale bass for the lower tunings.
    After trying their six and 7 strings it's hard to give up that neck and lighter weight and ergonomics. So I have been avoiding the Dingwall so far. Fingers crossed they come out with a long scale bass!

    Great review on the Boden Bass- but what I’d like to ask is,, are all strandberg Basses Multiscale? I’m not much of a fan of multi scale instruments. I’m a bit old-school.

    • @MatsOrbation
      @MatsOrbation 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of them are fanned/muktiscale, but some of them not. The custom series can be ordered fanned fret, regular fret, or tru temperament fret. Cost an arm and leg though.

    • @arunkarthikma3121
      @arunkarthikma3121 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Strandberg has a very subtle fan, only a 1.5-inch difference. This makes it very comfortable, even for non-fan players.

    @ConnorKaminski FIrst of all, thank you so much for taking the time to create such an in-depth review. I truly enjoyed it. I am more of a drop C kind of bass player, currently exploring more different tuning styles. Speaking of which I'd be curious to know what string gauge have you mounted currently and what tuning are you in with your 5 strings. Many thanks and GREAT video man!

      hey sorry i missed this! SO, i've been rocking a regular 45-105 set for a long time with an added high B at 32. but i recently picked up the 6 string extra long scale length NYXLs from daddario which are 32-130. I've been missing out the E string and going 32, 45, 65, 80, 130. and thats a drop Db so drop C will be perfect for that kinda thing

    Hey Connor! Great video! I’m using the exact same bass and I’m in love with it but I have the same issue with the tone. I’ll try doing the parallel/series routing! I have one doubt: with your actual routing, the blend knob it’s still useful? I’m thinking about trying to find a rotatory switch, like the Dingwall to replace that one, instead of the push/pull knobs!

    • @ConnorKaminski
      @ConnorKaminski  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep the blend knob still works! If you went the rotary route, you’d lose out on the blending but would probably be easier to wire? I’m no guitar tech so I’m not 100% sure!

    • @DEM94
      @DEM94 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mmm yeah, I guess so! Thanks for the answer! One more question: when you say “parallel” you are referring to the routing of the coils of each pickup, right? The blend between pickups is always in parallel?

  • @Bendalf
    @Bendalf ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wait i'm a bit confused. When you say the pickups are in series, do you mean how the 2 pickups are wired together or how each individual pickups are wired (meaning the two coils are in series inside the pickup) ?

    • @ConnorKaminski

      individual pickups :) i think so anyways! haha

    • @Bendalf
      @Bendalf ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ConnorKaminski I think what Nolly is referring to is both pickups being in parallel, not individual pickups, since the FD3-N in his signature are single-coils. But what you did definitely achieved similar tone, and what a tone ! Keep up the Awesome stuff ! 🤘🏼

    I wonder why not all fanned frets basses are made headless. Because, you don't have to hunt down special extra long "bespoke" string sets for this do you? Any regular long string set from any manufacturer, will fit doesn't it?

I’d be curious if they tried any of your ideas and a) found negatives that we haven’t thought of and they haven’t said or b) might be planning for down the line when they have their bass production revved up and more fine tuned

    Dingwall pickup are not in parallel most of the time.
    In the video with Nolly they are both in Serie but in Parallel with each other.
    And depending on the model it can be in Serie or Parallel.
    Also, the pickup on a Dingwall are not humbucker but split coil like a P bass.

      The NG2 has both in serie (and then the 4 ways Switch with : bridge, both in serie, both in parallel, middle)
      The NG3 is serie, parallel, serie (neck, middle, bridge)
      The DRoc is Parallel, serie, serie (Neck, middle, bridge).

    Really great video. I have one of these and completely agree with all of your comments. I keep mine in standard B-G 5 string but agree about the string comments. Also very hard to get other strings- even long scale ones tend not to fit but I find the NYXL ones fine.
    My main criticism is that it is very hard to mute- probably a function of how alive and well built it is but not an easy bass to play in a highly controlled manner and I am by no means a beginner (though i'm not exactly Lee Sklar either!) I find a string wrap helps enormously.
    I find the Darkglass preamp a bit anaemic. I have a Maruszczyk with the same pre and the same issue- if i plug in my tiny little Hofner violin bass after the Boden the output is about double. The Stingray pre-amp is a million miles better as well. I might change the pre at some point and do the same series parallel mod you have done.
    Beautifully built though, the weight is incredible, the playability first rate and it is a bass for life kind of bass. One you keep.
