    Technically, Gabe did exactly what he was told "put the bag of fries in here". Very concrete response but I still had to giggle.
    And he definitely has a typical teenage boy's enthusiasm about cooking 😂

      From my experience, he didn't even mean to be funny, he just took that literally.

      I don't think it's always that the person wasn't totally focused on or disinterested in a particular task but more along the lines of one step then walked away to process what they just did. I saw this and other "give me a second" actions with my autistic twins. And yes, you are more in tune with people's physical (body language) communications.

    • @chloeindigo
      @chloeindigo หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I had the urge to do this but grew out of it early because I was a girl. It is because of the intensity of focus on you, how uncomfortably contrived the lesson is, the attention. If they focused on the activity itself it would be easier but they focus on the person learning the activity and it makes it harder to learn. I'm often feeling Gabe walks away because of how uncomfortably fake the spotlight of attention is. That's how it felt for me when I was young I'd just want to get the hell away from any contrived situation like my skin was crawling. Especially with people I was close to.

      It really is. At first when I was younger and dealing with a lot of bullying the laughter was often at my expense. But once I built up a solid friend group of people who care about me and want to see me safe, it entirely changed. I went from being a punching bag to letting my quirks become a signature strain of charisma. Meeting new people is still a little difficult, I tend to be on the quiet side until I have an understanding of their boundaries and sensibilities. But when I eventually do I'm told that I'm a great conversationalist. Definitely more of a listener than a talker for obvious reasons. Though it seems that that's what people need more and more these days.

    I'm autistic and him dumping the entire thing, bag and all, into the container was a big autistic moment LOL I would've done the same exact thing as a kid, albeit with a lot more hesitation and being like "um....a-are you sure?" Probably also a minor anxiety attack as I try to decipher if it's REALLY the right step or I'm overthinking it. 😅 Also, thank you for teaching him life skills. So many people don't understand that being autistic doesn't always mean the same as being, for lack of a better word, "slow" or unable to understand anything. It's truly not the case at all and in fact there are a few autistic people who are perfectly average intelligence or even above (or just slightly below) who can very much so do everyday tasks (sometimes w/ modifications) as every neurotypical person can, including those who are mute. My niece is autistic like I am but has much higher needs and accommodation requirements, and my brother was absolutely SHOCKED when he realized I was communicating with her perfectly fine. I told him, just because it doesn't seem like she doesn't understand, doesn't mean that's true. I taught her how to play Uno and she understood it perfectly fine.
    The only thing I'd say is maybe give him a bit more time to do the task before repeating yourself, as I'd bet he gets brain fog just like I do haha. I take longer to process what people say to me when I'm face-to-face with them because of how autism affects sensory input, so there's a very slight delay in processing and pursuing said tasks for me most the time. :) I love seeing your beautiful family and I'm so happy Gabe has two moms who are there to help him and love him as he is.

    I just want to say that I see Gabe being able to speak in the near future.
    I am Autistic and I've worked with a lot of Autistic people. I can tell Gabe is highly intelligent.
    He's definitely a teen, though! Lol, he's gonna push you guys a lot!
    I would like to suggest something to help him.
    If you get a VR head set and set it up for him, he would enjoy the heck out of it.
    The cool thing is that he can experience a lot of things in VR. He does not need to be verbal either.
    I've spoken to quite a few Autistic people in VR. Some are nonverbal when they start but eventually start talking as it's like he's in HIS world.
    It's kinda hard to explain, but people with autism have their own world in their heads where we feel safer.
    And there are tools in VR to help us feel like it's our world. You can turn the volume up and down. If you don't feel like talking, you can mute yourself. You can respond with thumbs up and down or head shakes and such. There is a personal bubble you can surround yourself with. And you can block people who are annoying you and they disappear.
    There are games to play with others or ones you play by yourself. My favorite is a real vr fishing game. I can fish different areas by myself or with others. It's very calming. There are areas that have different weather in them.
    I'm almost 60 and didn't get diagnosed until my 40s! When i was a kid, I guess it didn't exist! Lol!
    So i had to learn stuff by myself. Autistic females have a tendency to over talk/ share, so I was always making someone mad because I had/ have no real filter.
    I'm still horrible at eating, I get stuck in a rut where I will only eat like 3 items for months! Sometimes, the items are good for me, and other times, not so much.
    I'm in a potato chip, string cheese, and goldfish cracker phase right now.
    Anyway, sorry for rambling!! Please do try the VR for Gabe, I think you'll be totally impressed. You might also set him up his own Facebook page so he can message people. Just explain its people from all over the world, and I bet he would love getting started.
    He just needs the extra guidance you're giving him like you just did in this video.
    I had a kid I was working with who was 8 years old and non-verbal and didn't write or use a communication board.
    I got him with a little extra coaching to write a Mother's Day card for his mom.
    He drew a flower and wrote I love you, Mommy, on it.
    Mom broke down crying when he gave it to her. It took 2 hours to make, but we did it as a team, and it was amazing! Gabe CAN! Just imagine he can do it, coax him, and he CAN do anything!! I promise I see how smart he is!! He is SUPER SMART!!

    • @Posmlady
      @Posmlady ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @Ricky Rascon There is what they call a spectrum, yes. For some reason, females with autism generally are much more verbal than males.
      There are mild cases where we basically seem normal but generally have horrible social skills. In cases where we can completely be in our own worlds and find out difficult to communicate at all.
      There is a tendency to have high IQs in Autistic people, which makes it even more difficult for us to fit in. We have a tendency to live in black and white. It's either right or wrong. And we take things much more literally than other people.
      We all have different programming systems and tend to focus more on our own than anyone else's.
      It's not rude to ask questions either. That's how you learn, right?
      Personally, i feel that having Autism is a gift more than a curse. And i believe that it's actually more of an evolution of the species than a disability. Eventually, everyone will have a form of autism a the birth rate for it climbs yearly.
      I really do see Gabe eventually talking and communicating well, once he feels more comfortable with the concept.

      I'm autistic, verbal and I think I have the super power to make people smile and laugh without even intending to do so. Took me a while to understand that they were not exactly laughing at me. Some even compliment me for my blunt and straight faced punch lines...
      I was just telling the truth, stating a fact, or observing and reducing it to one precise sentence. Yet people laugh at this.
      For example, I said with a straight face and no intention to hurt my friends feelings: "It ain't sad the old chair is gone, you would not have fit in it anyways." (He just bought a new piece of armour at the medieval fair and the chair was meant to be used there. With his armour he wouldn't fit in the chair because of the added width)
      Everybody laughed, yet he wasn't sure if I was provoking him or mocking him. For me, i was just stating the facts.
      Sorry for rambling, truth is, Gabe was just doing what he literally was asked for. He did not necessarily mean it in a funny way. That's a trait that autistic people tend to have to a certain degree: take things literally.

      Same here. I used to cry as a child when people would laugh at something that I did. I couldn't tell the difference between their laughing AT me or laughing WITH me.
      Even now,a lot of times that I'm trying to make people laugh, they don't and I'll feel embarrassed.
      I'm thinking " Please, at least pretend to laugh, instead of leaving me hanging "
      When I'm not TRYING to make people laugh, I'm just trying to be sarcastic or slightly funny, just not hilarious funny, I'll have them in stitches sometimes.
      I'll have people then tell me that I'm so funny( in a good way).
      I guess that's the secret, just pretend that you're not trying to be funny.

      I have a younger brother who has cerebral palsy and we believe he has some autistic tendencies because he gets really frustrated and angry when he wants something done a certain way. People in my life are always so surprised at my patience and ability to adapt to whatever situation I'm in, but when you live with a special needs family member you just have to have that mindset. You'll do anything for the people you love, and in these cases, patience and understanding is the top priority 💜

    • @Kessik8
      @Kessik8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm autistic and I had to learn to be patient with those who can't be. Sometimes that means being patient with my father who is still struggling to understand me. Must be hard for him to only notice me perceiving the world differently when I got my diagnosis four years ago at age 22.

    This is the first time I see Gabe, but I see a lot of mannerisms that I know from me. He is smart and notices a lot, even though he might seem distracted. I'm very thankful for your help and encouragement.
    Personally, I'd be a bit overwhelmed by you talking that much, but you know Gabe better than I do.
    BTW. I'm autistic, got adhd and was diagnosed with both at age 22, which was four years ago. I'm female.
    I got a but dizzy by all the things you asked him to do in such a short amount of time. That would be stressful for me. I couldn't tell if he got more nervous, the amount of stimming seemed to remain the same.

    What an inspiring video and you are a wonderful Mother who gives your son such encouragement in life! Your videos help other parents who have kids who are autistic to see positives rather than focus on society's negative response to autism; brilliant! As a psychotherapist I have and do work with a great many autistic clients and they are so stigmatised against by neurotypicals; it's wonderful to see them grow through their therapy into understanding that they are different AS WE ALL ARE but just as capable of achieving great things in life. I have subscribed to your channel as you are a joy to watch and learn from in a very positive way...thank you!

    Oh my goodness! I just discovered you guys❤️your videos have been so educational for me, as I am a caregiver for a verbal autistic woman who also has a traumatic brain injury. Though she is verbal, she has difficulty forming coherent sentences but is extremely aware of her environment. She often experiences delayed processing and trying to keep her attention poses quite the challenge, but when she is able, she follows simple commands and is easily redirected. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with those of us who have so much to gain from watching the content you put forth. I strive to adapt to her situation/environment so that I can best tend to her needs-of course all through the strength and patience of Jesus Christ. So, thank you!
