@Mike Smithson Pete Townshend of «The Who» also said that S.O.S. was the greatest pop song of all-time. ♪♫♪. Björn said that, in an interview, when he was in New York City, for the opening of the «Mamma Mia» musical on Broadway.

@@escorpioomega2111 The Internet is awash that claim John Lennon and Pete Townshend both said something like this, but it was difficult finding the original citations to prove that. I found a fairly good citation for Pete Townshend: www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/pete-townshend-the-whos-final-days-108427/ As for Lennon, I only remember reading that somewhere on wikipedia, but wikipedia may not meet your criteria for "a link with his own words."

So great that you give ABBA a closer look. It‘s so worth while!
Like Queen, their true biggest hits didn‘t fit on one CD. I grew up with them and loved them, but I didn’t realize the high quality of the music: the world class voices which harmonize so perfectly, the high class compositions and instrumentations, the wonderful vocal harmonies. With everything, they were on another level. And also they were naturally beautiful, not artificial.
This song is wonderful, I also love the underlying sadness.

  • @123billydog

I'm one of the old school ABBA fans from way before you were born Hap but this is one of ABBA's greatest songs, priased by Lennon and the Who's Pete Townsend for its instrumentation. The song was a number 6 hit in the UK following their number 1 Waterloo almost 2 years earlier...other singles between didn't do so well. Each ABBA member bought something to the group. Bjorn & Benny wrote, arranged and produced virtually almost all of the ABBA catalogue in their 10 years and worked together before the group and still do today. Agnetha (a sprano) and Frida (a Mezzo Suprano) created something unique with their combined vocals, and its sometimes tricky the figure when they're singing in unison or when its just one of the womens voices. The costumes were created with designer Owe Sandstom and as you like them, you should check out 'So Long', a single released from late 74. I would suggest the 1975 clip from 'Made In Sweden'. Most of ABBA's performances are lip synched with only footage from 'ABBA - the Movie' and 'Live At Wembley' being truly live. The group were never keen on 'live' recordings but consented to the 2014 release 'Live At Wembley' which is a complete audio concert from 1979 well worth a listen to but perhaps too long for a reaction video. I like the fact you picked up on the 'reserved' / .shy' performances. By Nature Swedes are far more reserved than most US/UK/Australian people!

Interesting reaction. Don’t forget B+B wrote the songs and produced much of their sound (with Michael B. Tretow, their sound engineer and as we Fans call him: the 5th ABBA). The harmonising, lyrics and complexity of the music and wall of sound is the magic for me. I like the dark stuff from the end especially. „The day before you came“ and „the visitors“. All 4 members and the combination of them as individuals and musicians make ABBA what they are. I had the pleasure of meeting Benny ans to correspond with Björn. I visit Mono Music whenever I’m in Stockholm.

Great albums led you from song to song on a side becoming more than the individual songs. And the second side might have been a totally different journey. And the most memorable albums I ever heard were listened to lying on the carpet, lights out, giant headphones on.
Can’t go back. But I do wish platform shoes and bell bottoms would make a reappearance. At 5’10” I don’t need need high heels, but platforms are more comfortable than pumps 👠.

Hi there, they are as much as capable of performing live as they are in studio recording. Their live performance has different qualities as they're more versatile and adventurous, hence producing another level of quality that could be likened to that of a wild mountain cat. When compared to their studio recordings, these are more clean, slick and polished, sort of a beautiful sweet domestic cat. The current SOS performance was not live, as was the common TV recording norms back then.
    I tell you what-
    1. If you wish to listen to ABBA's TRULY live TV performances, take a look at the videos of ABBA in the. Dick Clavet Shows. Its truly live and awesome.
    2. If you wish to listen to their live concerts performances, do check out their live concerts in Australia 77 and US 79.

There were some standout women in 70s pop and rock: Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, Patti Smith, Carole King, Suzi Quatro, Karen Carpenter, Christie Hynde, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry, Janis Ian, Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart). But Agnetha and Anni-Frid and ABBA had something unique in the magic blend of their voices. There weren’t like other rock and pop stars of the time, dealing with alcohol, drugs and anorexia in the sexual revolution. Having already each had successful recording careers on their own in the 60s, these four were mature, married couples, young mothers and fathers, singing about married life and the struggles of holding onto relationships in the modern world. The only two bands you could really compare them to are the diabetes-inducing Brotherhood of Man, and the explosive Fleetwood Mac.

ABBA were never "goody too shoes". The fact that a politician in Australia wouldn't let them perform in his state's capital city because two ABBA members weren't married but living together, is but one example of their not so pristine reality.
As for songs, check out Gimme Gimme Gimme for a woman hanging out for an anonymous f#$k just so to ease her boredom and loneliness - hardly "goody too shoes ".
ABBA only seemed so clean because pop music culture was so utterly narcissistic and degenerate - nothing was too excessive. Anybody would seem straight compared to the boring excess of cultural officianado's then ... and now.
ABBA just let the music sing for itself rather than being tied down to a particular outrageous performance image... which is a big part of why their huge popularity keeps going.

This is one of their really early ones, so their sound isn't as developed as later on :)

The girls' costumes look better with those long skirts gone, showing the matching shorter part of the costume underneath.

I had this great write up all set to go when my ADHD hit and I punched up another song. Now I am too depressed to try again. You would think at 70 yrs. old I would have out those issues, but NOOOOOOO!!!!! I'll try and make it up the next time. The only thing I remember is I was in love with the redhead. Is that Anita? Until the next time.

Huge thanks for making two ABBA videos that are on my podium:
Waterloo and S.O.S. together with Dancing Queen are for me his three best songs
What can I suggest for future ABBA videos?
of their TV presentations I would choose "Mamma Mía" in the british program Top of the Pops
(curiosly but at this same week in January 1976 "Mamma Mía" picks at #1 in UK Charts and beat "Bohemian Raphsody" by Queen)
In your other BEE GEES video I left you a link to the premiere of "Chiquitita" for UNICEF at the United Nations (By that time the guitarist Björn and the blonde singer Agnetha had just separated)
And many of us would suggest their most famous heartbroken song
"The winner takes it all" (lyrics by guitarist Björn, about a divorce, sung by his ex-wife Agnetha)
And there is an Oliva Newton John TV special on the U.S. 1978 with Andy Gibb and ABBA as guest stars, which you can see all six interacting live with their greatest hits
This are only suggestions, surely you will have many more from other subscribers, it will be a great pleasure to see you with one of them or others that you choose
I wish you an excellent weekend
    God bless you
    My best regards from
    Buenos Aires Argentina

Why am I in the twightzone/Xfiles about this? What is going on and why did they sue Stig? And why is this the first name of a book or series I am also obsessed with. stig larsson the mellinum seirfes?

fact - The reason why they wore such "far out costumes" in the 70's was " swedish tax deduction" purposes and it quite substantial to do it. They admit it themselves & the law existed. ( dont Swedish metal bands etc, have extreme costumes too.... thats why)

Men and women's reactions are completely different when watching that song. Some people just do not want to admit the obvious.

I don't think it's your cup of tea. I remember this song when it came out. I was a kid. For me it's all about the music. I never once thought about their clothes or appearance.

Their music was disco but not quite disco. I couldn't stand the disco stuff. So, I tossed them in the discard pile. Now older, I'm fine with them.

Everybody could sing Abbafrom first listen, so you couldn’t actually admit that you liked them. Too poppy, not like the REAL bands like Led zeppelin etc. Obviously there were enough of us then and now they too are a great part of pop history.
