Every band discussed sounded awesome! Love the amount of effort and nerdery Sarah puts into things. And that finnish intro was just heartwarming. Definitely gonna give all these bands a good listen. Thanks Banger! Love you, Sarah!
I know this one was mostly focused on the death/doom side with some shoutouts to the osdm and experimental death scenes but Finland also knows how to do melodeath better than most of the world: Omnium Gatherum, Insomnium, Mors Principium Est, Kalmah, Wolfheart, Wintersun, Whispered, and Children of Bodom. The melodeath/doom microgenre also has some stalwarts here from Swallow The Sun, Hanging Garden, Ghost Brigade, and Barren Earth.
@@GundamZeroDevil Haha good point! Apparently, I can't read :P I thought it said Finland knows how to do melodeath better than the rest of the world. You're absolutely right, though...they are better than MOST!
Findeath is currently having a second wave of punishing and promising Death metal fresh bands like Cryptic Hatred, Azatoth, Disguised malignance, Malformed and many more are brutaly blooming
Gorephilia, Torture Killer, Galvanizer, Mörbid Vomit, Kasvoton, Cadaveric Incubator - Not found from previous comments nor on the video but worth checking out! Thank you for making banger content!
(ROTTING WAYS TO MISERY: THE HISTORY OF FINNISH DEATH METAL by Markus Makkonen (who appears in this video) and Kim Strömsholm, the only complete book on this subject is still available from Decibel (USA) and Cult Never Dies (Europe), as well as Hell's Headbangers, Nuclear Blast, Season of Mist, Levykauppa etc.)
For the more casual fan, DEFINITELY check out early work from the bands Sarah glossed over, like Sentenced and Amorphis. There's a reason they got all the attention back in the early 90s.
I’m so happy you guys mentioned Xysma. They’re easily one of the most interesting bands around and I can’t wait to hear what their new album sounds like.
A+ content, Sarah! All of these albums sound and look (ugh the album art) fantastic. This was just the kind of primer I needed to start digging past the surface of the scene.
What an awesome video - so cool to see an underrated but essential and booming pocket of the metal scene getting some attention! I really feel that Finnish death metal is very unique and intriguing. Keep it up! Would you ever consider doing a video on DC/Maryland trad doom? Iron Man, Pentagram, The Obsessed, Internal Void, etc.
An interesting thing about Finnish DM is that it seems like the most influential bands from the 80s / 90s either dropped a few demos and EPs and like 1 album (Rippikoulu, Abhorrence, Funebre), or they had long careers where they eventually changed their style completely (Convulse, Amorphis, Sentenced). Almost nothing in between. Except for bands like Xysma, who had a short career but went weird and experimental right off the bat. I love this episode, and the fact that Finnish death metal is finally getting the recognition Swedish death metal has had for years.
I was wondering if Krypts, another fantastic Finnish band on Dark Descent, would make the list. Their 2019 album Cadaver Circulation is fucking awesome! Far as Lantern's Dimensions goes, I really wanted to like it but couldn't get on with the shouty vocals. The band's logo is amazing though
I was lucky enough to see lots of bands in this list in the UK at a helpfully named Finnfest last year. Getting to see Convulse, Demilich, Rippikoulu, Lantern and more in one weekend was truly something to behold.
Interesting video! I'm way more familiar with Finnish Black Metal. One release that came out this year that is one of my favorites is from the Finnish Death Metal band Revulsion. That album is a great slab of pure Death Metal. Highly recommended!
8:52 *Of course!* By the title alone, it's pretty obvious that Blayne's all time favorite band will be very much included here. ❤ By the way. *Rippikoulu* sounds like a clean & meaty version of *Archgoat.* And also, *Swallowed* literally kicks ass!
Paljon kiitoksia! That was cool! Even though I'm Finnish, I didn't know about half of the bands mentioned. That's probably because I'm not the biggest fan of death metal bands, and most of the bands I really enjoy only use elements of black/death metal. Oranssi Pazuzu is probably my favourite Finnish band. Their album Mestarin kynsi was my 2020 aoty.
From newer releases I would shout out Only Ashes Remain by Sepulchral Curse. Some classic finish Death Metal with some Black Meal and melodic touches. Other than that I think Demilich is just classic. Till this day one of the craziest Death Metal albums I've heard. Obviously because of these absolutely disgusting vocals which I just cant fathom. Great episode as usual. Glad you brought back this show
Finnish Death Metal is definitely one of my favourite veins of the genre. A huge diversity in sound with an overall gloomy feel often present! Rotting Ways To Misery is essential reading for any Finnish Death lovers! Finnfest (in the UK) was also one of the best shows I have ever been to.
Finnish death metal scene is shure alive and well. Just saw Convulse and Rippikoulu live, with a younger band Whisper opening up for them. They played ”World Without God” and ”Musta seremonia” in their entirety!
Finnish metal is too OP at this point, their black, doom and power metal bands are top-tier. No surprise that even their death metal bands are up there too, Hails to Finnish Metal. 🤘🏽
For Finnish DM that leans toward the doom side then look no further than the mighty Solothus. Their 2020 album Realm Of Ash And Blood was an absolute crushing beast.
Finland is without a doubt home to THE BEST Death Doom bands and where the genre started, but their death metal bands often are underrated and overlooked. My favs: Demilich, Abhorrence, Demigod, Convulse, Purtenance, Desolate Shrine, and Vorum. Also don't sleep on Lantern, fantastic Black/Death.
Love the focus on Finnish Death Metal, my favorite sub genre…..correct me if I’m wrong….I don’t ever remember hearing Insomnium mentioned on any Banger video….I thought it would get a mention here :(
Maybe if they do a melodic death metal episode they will. I believe they were brought up on Lock Horns back in the day when they were updating the mdm list of bands.
@@passionateintrovert I believe you are right, I vaguely remember that episode. I’m majorly biased….Insomnium is in my all time top 5…..so naturally I just wish they got more love :)
That Vacant Coffin album is great. Probably my favorite of the scene. 16 songs in 33 dirty, grimy minutes. Thanks for the video, Sarah! North America will miss you.
My favorites are early (Abhorrence)Amorphis, early Sentenced, Demigod, Demilich and Adramelech. Also Depravity and Purtanance are very great. Love almost all of these bands, the New Hooded Menace is also a recommended album!
Great episode! Even though my fav. Finnish band (besides Eläkeläiset) is Rotten Sound (HM-2-grind with some Death elements) I really enjoyed the picks & will dig deeper.
World Without God deserves 5/5 so hard. Nice job. Sarah got me into this album from her recommendation of it in her review of Tomb Mold's Planetary Clairvoyance. Both are excellent records.
Very cool video Sarah! Just a bit surprised that after you language course you still seem to mispronounce many words like Kalevala, Makkonen and Rippikoulu, not to mention Joensuu, my hometown for a while! 😉

These new bands have much worse audio than the original bands....The labels aren't investing nearly as much into achieving quality recordings anymore. Lots of great bands in Finland! Also nice to mention Xysma, Sarah, but you made a mistake. 'First and Magical' was not their first album. Their first was 'Yeah'. An awesome album, very original and much better than the album you mentioned (in my opinion).
Impaled Nazarene, Finland’s finest! Not death, but crust of course. Convulse i always liked, they were on Death.... is just the beginning vol.3. Never bought their albums, but might still do that!
