He was a complete boxer- especially back then. People usually only think of his bombs that he threw, but you watch him bobbing and weaving, ducking his opponents shots. It's great the way he tied his defence directly to his offence. You threw a cross at his head, he would duck it, step in and hit you with a sledgehammer to the liver like he did his opponent here. Mike was very hard to hit and he hit very hard.

Glad you mentioned the bob and weave, as I was going to do it otherwise. The video, as it always is with Tyson, is fixated on his power. I get it, he was explosive and devastating, and knockouts sell tickets. However, power isn't a rare commodity in heavyweight boxing, and plenty of guys hit just as hard or harder. What made Tyson special and one of the all time greats was his pairing that power with that bob and weave defense.. I encourage people to rewatch this video and his early fights and focus specifically on the bob and weave. His instincts and speed with it make it mezmerizing to watch. It's what allowed him, despite almost always having a major reach disadvantage, to get inside, and stay inside, to work the body. He always started with a few rib cracking hammer shots to the torso which got the opponent to instictively drop his elbows for protection, and soon to be regretted, his hands by extension. (He actually dropped Johnson with one of those shots in this fight. Just listen to the sound of early body shots as they land. Damn.) That is what set up those iconic kill shot hooks to the head. The reason Tyson was so mediocre later in his career was entirely due to his abandoning the bob and weave defense, and relying solely on his power which he still possessed. Turns out it's much harder to use that power when the other guy is teeing off on your head as you're trying to get close enough to unload it. Side note... I love the bit in the beginning about no sparring partners being willing to get in the ring. Those kinds of stories were nonstop as he was coming up, but were mostly fake. It was brilliant strategy by Tyson's team. They crafted an image of Tyson in the media that instilled real fear in his opponents. As a result, most of them had lost before they even got in the ring. Spinks wanted none of it! Conversely, not having that fear is what gave Holyfield, the only boxer who I think legitimately owned Tyson, the advantage. I very much miss the days of Tyson and Holyfield, which was the last great era of heavyweight boxing and storied rivalries, when being the heavyweight champion of the world still mattered and made you famous. Doubt we'll ever see an iconic rivalry like Ali-Frazier or Tyson-Holyfield, the kind that drew non-boxing fans to the sport, in boxing again.

I read a book about Cus, and he said something about how the Peekaboo style was frowned upon by other trainers at the time because it was so different. I still think a lot of trainers look down on it, since we haven't really seen anyone with a similar style since Tyson, save for maybe David Tua, who was kind of similar. We also haven't seen many heavyweights under 6'2 in a long time. Most of today's heavyweights are like 6'7 240 lb giants. I would have loved to see how someone like Tyson or Smokin Joe would have faired against The giants that we have today.

Let me try! I clipped my chin on a brick windowsill on the way down from a 25 foot fall- to quote my surgeon, "most people break their mandible in two. You broke yours in about twenty two". Honestly though the smashed jaw was nothing against the fact that my jaw was too damaged for dental work so I had my jaw wired shut with nearly all of my back teeth- upper and lower- shattered, with the fragments in a constant state of grinding against exposed nerves... that was the end of my parkour career...
I was maybe 11 or 12 when my dad introduced me to Mike Tyson on HBO so I seen most of these fights and it was just overwhelmingly fun to watch . My dad never cared about nor watched sports but always told me that this kid was very special . Mike was a great role model for us kids knowing where he came from and what he accomplished before he got into drugs during the 90's. My Dad always said he's a very smart kid as well as a nice guy out of the ring and don't let the way he talks fool you into thinking he's dumb . RIP Dad ...
One of Mike's downfalls was when he stopped moving his head(2:12) like these early years. Once he started feeling himself a bit he just went out and head hunted without the defensive movement. This version of Mike was virtually unbeatable. He was Hungry, and disciplined.
I think he is much smaller but faster. He is older age like fighting holyfield or lennox is bigger but slower. Also when he is younger he is do a lot of body shot.
It's maybe not just a matter of headhunting too much but also a matter of biological aging. I noticed this with video games. Now that I'm in my 30s, I can't just run in and rely on my superior reflexes in Counter-Strike the way that I did when I was 16.
tyson's downfall is when he faced a well conditioned top notch heavyweight who was not afraid of tyson. We are talking about James Buster Douglas who administerd a savage 10 round beating on tyson and laid him out cold. Tyson was exposed as a beatable fighter and it was all downhill from there. The other top heavyweight of the time Evander Hollyfield dominated tyson after tyson finally was forced to fight hollyfield after running from him for severa years. Finally Lennox Lewis beat the hell out of tyson and put him out of business for good. tyson was a paper lion that never defeated a truly great heavyweight.

He fought Buster and he had so little respect for his boxing that Mike didn't even train at all for that fight. Just made weight and tried to knock his head off, when that didn't work he got tagged by some nice counter punches which was odd for Mike and lead to his first defeat. But Mike beat himself in that fight. Everyone knows that. If he had shown up 100% Buster would have been out in 2 rounds like everyone else.
Mikes best offense was putting fear into his opponent before they stepped into the ring. When Mike fought Spinks to unite the title you could see the fear in Spink it was visable to the ringside fans Spinks was a beaten fighter before Tyson threw a punch. I was so proud of Douglas fighting for his mom who had passed away a couple weeks before the fight he was determined to win he had no fear of Tyson including the Englishman they brought it to Mike and Hollyfield also they took the kong out of the king.
I'm glad Cus got to see this prodigy of his grow into a real professional and, as he was already in his latter 70's, he went out on top. It's an amazing gift to give someone, TY Mike.
You can see by the look on Johnson's face, after the body shot, that he knows he is in way over his head. He still had the guts to go on fighting, but he knew he was in big trouble.
I could watch that slo-mo starting at 2:18 over and over.. The first punch Mike didn't even know was coming.. dodged it.. the second he saw and he moves almost instantly under it to deliver the rib shot.. Unbelievable form..

It's one of the best orchestrations of a liver shot I've seen. Due to human physiology, a direct hit to the liver will automatically place the recipient in a horizontal position. You can see how Johnson went straight to the canvas clutching his abdomen. He may have ruptured his liver actually.

For a long time, Mike was considered by many as a brute, strong and vicious with no talent, away from the fighters like Ali, Frazier or Sugar Ray Robinson. Nowadays we can see how technical and intelligent he was on the ring.
For a long time by who? Tyson was just a great pressure boxer who happened to have enormous power. But he was a boxer not a fighter and was appreciated as such. People who don't understand boxing don't know the difference. So your comment says nothing substantial.
I read a book about Cus, and he said something about how the Peekaboo style was frowned upon by other trainers at the time because it was so different. I still think a lot of trainers look down on it, since we haven't really seen anyone with a similar style since Tyson, save for maybe David Tua, who was kind of similar. We also haven't seen many heavyweights under 6'2 in a long time. Most of today's heavyweights are like 6'7 240 lb giants. I would have loved to see how someone like Tyson or Smokin Joe would have faired against The giants that we have today.

I had a broken jaw from a bicycle accident when I was 20. I seriously winced at this video. Mike Tyson was an absolute beast.
Let me try! I clipped my chin on a brick windowsill on the way down from a 25 foot fall- to quote my surgeon, "most people break their mandible in two. You broke yours in about twenty two". Honestly though the smashed jaw was nothing against the fact that my jaw was too damaged for dental work so I had my jaw wired shut with nearly all of my back teeth- upper and lower- shattered, with the fragments in a constant state of grinding against exposed nerves... that was the end of my parkour career...

I was maybe 11 or 12 when my dad introduced me to Mike Tyson on HBO so I seen most of these fights and it was just overwhelmingly fun to watch . My dad never cared about nor watched sports but always told me that this kid was very special . Mike was a great role model for us kids knowing where he came from and what he accomplished before he got into drugs during the 90's. My Dad always said he's a very smart kid as well as a nice guy out of the ring and don't let the way he talks fool you into thinking he's dumb .

One of Mike's downfalls was when he stopped moving his head(2:12) like these early years. Once he started feeling himself a bit he just went out and head hunted without the defensive movement. This version of Mike was virtually unbeatable. He was Hungry, and disciplined.
I think he is much smaller but faster. He is older age like fighting holyfield or lennox is bigger but slower. Also when he is younger he is do a lot of body shot.

It's maybe not just a matter of headhunting too much but also a matter of biological aging. I noticed this with video games. Now that I'm in my 30s, I can't just run in and rely on my superior reflexes in Counter-Strike the way that I did when I was 16.
tyson's downfall is when he faced a well conditioned top notch heavyweight who was not afraid of tyson. We are talking about James Buster Douglas who administerd a savage 10 round beating on tyson and laid him out cold. Tyson was exposed as a beatable fighter and it was all downhill from there. The other top heavyweight of the time Evander Hollyfield dominated tyson after tyson finally was forced to fight hollyfield after running from him for severa years. Finally Lennox Lewis beat the hell out of tyson and put him out of business for good. tyson was a paper lion that never defeated a truly great heavyweight.

He fought Buster and he had so little respect for his boxing that Mike didn't even train at all for that fight. Just made weight and tried to knock his head off, when that didn't work he got tagged by some nice counter punches which was odd for Mike and lead to his first defeat. But Mike beat himself in that fight. Everyone knows that. If he had shown up 100% Buster would have been out in 2 rounds like everyone else.
I can't imagine what it must have been like getting into the ring with him, be absolutely terrifying.

Mikes best offense was putting fear into his opponent before they stepped into the ring. When Mike fought Spinks to unite the title you could see the fear in Spink it was visable to the ringside fans Spinks was a beaten fighter before Tyson threw a punch. I was so proud of Douglas fighting for his mom who had passed away a couple weeks before the fight he was determined to win he had no fear of Tyson including the Englishman they brought it to Mike and Hollyfield also they took the kong out of the king.

You can see by the look on Johnson's face, after the body shot, that he knows he is in way over his head. He still had the guts to go on fighting, but he knew he was in big trouble.
I could watch that slo-mo starting at 2:18 over and over.. The first punch Mike didn't even know was coming.. dodged it.. the second he saw and he moves almost instantly under it to deliver the rib shot.. Unbelievable form..

Mike Tyson changing lives out there. Some fighters were literally never the same after just a few rounds with this legend.
One of those fighters was Andrew Golota of Poland who went 2 rounds with Tyson and had a concussion, a broken cheek bone, and a herniated disc after the end of just 2 rounds. He wisely decided to end the fight otherwise, he may have gotten killed for real!
