His life reads like a novel or a movie. Born into a bad situation, commits crime to make ends meet, meets Cus and is adopted by him, finds out he has a talent and is guided by Cus, Cus dies, wins championship, starts to stray from his path, divorce, loses heavyweight championship, rape (convicted or wrongly convicted), prison, wins and losses, second divorce, ear bite, daughter dies, reinvents himself and finds peace. Absolutely crazy and happy that he is finally at peace with himself. Love listening to him talk now about his early days and career.
Some people always seem to overlook Tysons defensive skills. It was hard to land a solid punch on Tyson. Making his counter attacks that more lethal. He was amazing at setting his opponent up.
You have to see it to believe it. That’s the greatest combination of power and speed I’ve ever seen in a HW. I was saying just the other day that when Mike Tyson was in his prime and disciplined and coached to his best abilities, he was virtually invincible. You didn’t get into the ring with him to win; you only appeared for a quick payday.
I love Mike but in all honesty he fought a bunch of tomato cans. Almost all of his opponents are forgettable except for the fact that they fought Mike Tyson. When he fought good fighters, Lewis and Holyfield, he lost. He had two shots at Holyfield and lost both. The first fight was the most telling. If Mike could get pushed around and outboxed by Holyfield it definitely raises the question of how would he do against even better fighters in their primes, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Norton, and Frazier for instance.
@@sevenrats He did fight Holmes but of course Holmes was almost 40 when he fought him. We'll never know how it would have played out if they been the same age.
This is the Tyson that was the greatest boxer in history. His training was top notch and he was a well-oiled, trained machine. Hats off to Kevin Rooney and Cus D’Amato for what you see here.
An amazing fighter, but this dude was an example of the duds Tyson had as opponents too many times. Went on to a record of 1-6 post fight shows how bad this fresh out of prison opponent was
Its like watching an animal hunt and kill prey in the wild on a nature show, so serious and focused. He knocks the guy out and just turns around and walks away in a almost serial killer kind of way, like "Works done here....going home". Not like those guys that act like they just the lottery...dancing and jumping on the ropes or UFC guys that climb the walls and yelling the crowd. That guy on the plane this year got off easy, no gloves, Mike could of killed him for real or gave him some serious brain damage.
People will be talking about how great Tyson was till the end of time. To grow up in the 80’s and follow him through his career was a great experience. I never get tired of watching him and Star Wars of course.
Mike was and still is the greatest fighter to walk the earth, the speed and the ferocity he demonstrated against every opponent will be remembered forever
Mike beat on Donnie so hard, apparently he had a concussion: "I remember going to the fight, and I remember waking up in the hospital," Long said. "As far as the actual fight, I can't tell you a single thing." - Donnie Long in a 2005 interview with ESPN
The mindset and the determination of Tyson in that period was unmatched. He was the lion and a hunter at the same time, coming to eat you alive. A true beast.
This thread is kinda funny, but thought to add something. Male lions don't hunt, the females in the pride mostly do, and as a group. So, the analogy works out that way too.
Mike Tyson: Focused. Fearless. Ferocious. Freaking Fast. Like a real Lion. Absolute Unstoppable at this stage of his career. You can feel the passion when he fights.
most of his early opponents didn't even know, what kind of life-threatening situation they have been in when they entered the ring with Mike Tyson on the other side.
You hear this a lot.. but a prime Mike at this age was unstoppable. He had a very short prime, but during this time he was faster, lighter on his feet, and a lethal combination puncher. When his trainer Cus passed away, he quickly went down hill. Just a couple of short years into his career, he fell out of his prime. Prison ruined his drive, and technique. He was never the same after spending time away. Even at the time he fought Douglas, he was already partying and not training. Before Douglas, you can see he had this style here, which is drastically different than the Douglas fight. When Holyfield beat Mike, you could see Mike was fighting flat footed, throwing arm punches. No movement or footwork. By the time he fought Lewis, he was already finished. The Prime Mike that we see here, with this style.. would have torn through everyone right up to the early 2000s. Such a shame that his talent went to waste so early.
Yes, this exactly. He was on a different level on his march to the unified title, which he accomplished at a younger age than anyone ever has, maybe ever will. Once he achieved this goal, he lost his superhuman drive and motivation. It's hard to stay as hyper-focused as Tyson was once you have achieved what you set out to do. He quit moving his feet and torso so much, he quit throwing those lightning combos from all angles, and started to rely on his power alone. He needed a new mountain to climb. Anyway you slice it, he is an iconic fighter who accomplished a feat that no one (as of yet) has ever matched or bested. That accomplishment alone secures his place as one of the best ever, a gifted athlete, and a supremely driven force of nature.
@@Nesto38 And you will continue to catch shit for it!! While Tyson was great for his time Ali was greater for all time! Could Tyson outbox Ali? We will never know but one thing is for sure. I've never heard anybody make such clearly audible punch impacts as Tyson when he was connecting solidly. You can hear the THWACK even above the crowd and the announcers.
If you watched professional boxing back then (family tradition for us) when you witnessed the damage Tyson could do from ANY location and especially close with guys trying to hold him it was just unbelievable. Tyson could dodge, he could take a punch and most of all when he connected he knew where to land the follow up. It was catastrophic

Much respect for Mike Tyson; probably the best boxer we’ve seen after Ali. But a moment to consider Donny Long’s life and career, and the turn of events that gave birth to a new man. What a story!
best boxer period....not after Ali who was a big blabber mouth. Tyson always will be topdog. Mike was deferential when referring to Ali but that was just respect to an older man.
We were robbed of many years of Tyson in his prime. Losing Cus and then finding Don was some real bad fate. Legend nonetheless and again a good human being today.
Every Tyson fight, in his prime, was an execution. Nobody was leaving on their feet. Ali will always be my favorite boxer, but Tyson was my favorite villain!
favorite villian for me is foreman, he was like the predecessor to tyson because foreman and tyson both looked up to sonny liston for their intimidating personas, I just like foremans style more
Check out how fast that 1 left hook was at 3:45! Even though it was slow mo replay, it still looked like a left hook by a fast light heavyweight! I think he lost a lot of fast twitch muscle fiber when he went to prison. He never had that lightning fast snap on his punches anymore after he got out in 95.
He was never the same after getting raped by Givens, Washington and Don King. After prison he was hanging around entertainers trying to be a superstar. What people forget is during all these incredible footage of Tysons best years is he had ZERO distractions, he ate, lived and slept boxing, that was his entire life. It didn't get messed up until he added women and hollywood.
@kurt drexler Distractions aren't no joke. Distraction took Tiger Woods from top of the world to a "has been" at what he does for almost ten years. We analyzed Tyson and I've come across a lot of thoughts regarding this matter. What made him was living in the gym and a 100% commitment, hardly any social life, 100% focus on training and boxing. His advantage back then was being more powerful, more highly conditioned, more explosive and these destructive combos which he could do in muscle memory. When he came out of jail he tried to live off his old rep. He probably trained 80% as hard as before. He added in the Hollywood, partying and hanging out and being a super star. He also changed trainers and no longer used his peek a boo style with the "punches in bunches" strategy, he was trying to be a one punch head hunter - and that's not what made him who he was. His thing that made him the Tyson we knew was these lightning fast destructive combos. Anyways that's how that went down at a high level. The young Tyson story is a testimony to how god will bless us if we are able to focus ourselves and stay dedicated to a prosperous path.
@kurt drexler Yeah we talked about it for some years and figured it out. His combos, his footwork, his movement was way ahead of his competition in his prime. He was simply better and more immaculately trained. His power level was higher than everyone else and he was literally able not to have to worry about defense in those days... What would be curious to see in those days was someone who could box him and how he deals with controversy and setback - because most dudes he steamrolled. Oh, Tony Tucker didn't do bad against him.
I grew up watching some pretty dominant sports figures and dynasties like the 80s Lakers & Magic Johnson, the 80s and 90s 49ers & Joe Montana/Rice, the 90s Bulls with Jordan/Pippen, & the late 90s Yankees with Jeter. I STRONGLY believe that the up and becoming version of Iron Mike was the most DOMINANT of them all. Watching Tyson fight was like watching other fighters attempt to stave off a demolition wreaking ball with a jab. Tyson made short work of alot of good fighters. Ill never forget when he hit Spinks so hard his eyes rolled into the back of his head and must have saw GOD!
Watching Mike walk down his trainer, Kevin Rooney, as he slips past multiple jabs is just one of the most terrifying and beautiful things to see. It’s like the complete opposite of what I think a fighter would/should do, but it’s his preferred method and fighting style (peekaboo). Absolutely menacing; farewell Donny boy. 🎤 🥊
Tyson was a short heavyweight. It's exactly what a fighter of his dimensions should be doing to avoid the jab. Not the opposite. It's just that you need to be in tremendous shape to pull it off. Tyson was in great shape then. When he got older, and more out of shape, he couldn't do that anymore.
I think he actually lost the fight that he was talking about when he said this publicly, which is pretty ironic. From what I've been able to learn, this quote may have originated from Joe Louis - I've heard it was said by various boxers before Tyson said it.
Mike Tyson's career from '85-'91 is the most sensational stint in boxing history. I even throw in the Buster Douglas fight as part of that run because everyone loses from time to to time. His 2 fights with Razor Ruddock after the Buster loss showed that Mike had a lot of heart; in my opinion anyway.
@@SmoothJK but he folded against Holyfield, he got disqualified on purpose. He completely folded psychologically against Lewis, MCBride, and Williams to. Mike was not as psychologically tough as guys like Lennox and Evander...and they proved it.
I love watching videos of Tyson. I'm now 46, I'm French and this guy was a terror back in the day, even seen from France on TV. But now, football star Kylian Mbappé reminds me of him. A terror for its opponents on the pitch but a sweet and articulate guy in interviews. Not a show off, not the kind to boast off or to pose as bigger than he really is, never taunts but hits and hits hard The guy is there to do the job. Love that !
I think ultimately it played against him that he looked too damn mature at 19. He looked like a grown man in his 30s or something. So big, fast and strong it was hard to believe or understand that he was still a young man like others his age and that he still has a lot of growing up and learning to do. He was incredible though! Love Mike!
he found a better con, frankly. tax free money, no real work, and a cover for when you screw up yet again "god forgives me, so you have to as well". pretty much bought himself a few bonus crimes by doing it.
Good for Donnie for turning his life around in the end, that makes him a true champion, not really in the ring, but in life, which is what really matters and is much more important
Tyson at 19 has a lot of brains. His intelligence is underrated. He straight up disciplined himself to be the best, and he succeeded. Some random drug dealer street tough never was a match against Mike Ty's genius.
I agree, watching early interviews and fights, I'd rate him as very smart and kind of relaxed with an almost goofball sense of humor. Like he saw the funny side of being a goofball who was also a killing machine!
Remember that Tony Tucker, Mitch Green and James Tillis all showed that they could take Tysons punches and frustrate him with lateral movement and decent jab. Mike was in his prime. I'm not bashing on Iron Mike but he always had trouble with larger men who could move laterally and had accurate jabs.
Evander holyfield proved that he could. I would say a 25-year-old George Foreman could knock Tyson out as well. Tyson had good defense, but he never fought anyone that hit his hardest Foreman.
@@rtsjunk1417 Holyfield never dodged anyone. He was fighting at light heavy and cruiserweight and it wasn't until 1989 he started climbing the heavyweight ladder. Yes and I'm fairly certain I watched a much smaller Holyfield at 192 pounds knock around Tillis until he quit in round 5 . You forget that about that Mr Expert? Had they fought in 1990 as planned Evander would have beaten Tyson even more convincingly. You forget Mr Expert that Evander was past 34 years old when he beat Tysons ass like a drum. Mike is nearly 4 years younger than Evander. You also probably are completely unaware that when Tyson was around 210 in 1984 before turning pro the next year that Evander dropped Tyson on 3 separate occasions sparring and that in toe to toe exchanges he always had the advantage. That is unless Teddy Atlas, Kevin Rooney and others are liars . BTW , Evander was around 178 pounds when he dropped Tyson the first time. Yes yes yes Tyson did mostly dominate Tillis but he was unable to knock him out. He tried very hard but failed. I've watched the fight several times and even recorded that fight on VHS tape back in 1986. Also he fought Green 17 days later . I had both of those fights on the same VHS tape until I converted them to DVD about 15 years ago. I'm sure you didn't do the same.

💯, he was unbeatable
most of his early opponents didn't even know, what kind of life-threatening situation they have been in when they entered the ring with Mike Tyson on the other side.
All don kings fault.
When he started getting high it was over for Prime Iron Mike!
I always catch shit for saying that tyson was the goat, not Ali. Even Ali recognized tyson as being his equal if not better
@kurt drexler His calm style kinda sucked out some of Tysons power in the first few rounds. Tyson wasn't able to get a rythm at first.

@@rtsjunk1417 Holyfield never dodged anyone. He was fighting at light heavy and cruiserweight and it wasn't until 1989 he started climbing the heavyweight ladder. I have every single Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield fight (including Olympic trials and Olympics) that they ever fought ,that's part of well over 3,000 hours of my fight library. Go check out boxingwholesale.com. Chances are if they don't have a fight you are looking for, no one does. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
@@paysonfox88 If Gregorio Peralta who barely weighed 196 pounds could go nearly a full 20 rounds with George, I'm fairly certain that a prime Tyson would have been just fine. Tyson had trouble with big men who could box ,with good jabs and lateral movement. George never had hardly any lateral movement. I put it at 50 50 who would win . I seriously doubt it goes 10 rounds.
Honestly, Mike Tyson in his prime was one of the greatest fighters ever.
Can you imagine being him? He was probably the baddest man on earth.....
@@buckfiden6102 - He probably was, that was before MMA, and BJJ (I believe), or in their infancy. Can’t think of who could’ve taken him.
He's still bad...hes faster than most of us young guys....does he have kids? I bet them girls wanted his genetics...
@@clinicaltranscription1190 he was like a real life super hero...if I was robbing a bank and he came in like put that money back before I hit you. Oh shit it's Mike Tyson...yes sir my bad...
Damn..at 19...young ,rich. Powerful..the heavyweight boxer on earth. He was the MAN....just imagine? Nobody wants to fight you.....
3:07”Well, that was quick”🤣
That outro is so good, does anyone know the song or edit?
Mike Tyson is the most feared boxer ever, Even George Foreman wasn’t feared as much as this, and he literally almost killed a few people. You gotta respect Tyson, you ain’t got a choice!
sonny Liston was just a feared and just as dangerous
Foreman and Morrison..two Tyson never went against...
@@Cincinnatus1869 Sonny was even more..."Solemn Sonny"...Tyson himself stated Liston was the most brutal.
@@mikatamminen2786 i could see Tyson saying that, but Tyson was also very modest. If he knew he was the most feared, he'd of course say someone else was. That was Tyson. Great all around guy on the inside too.
@@mikatamminen2786 Yes, but Tyson might have put a beating on him worse than Ali LoL.
Grew up watching him KO opponent after opponent. His speed & power was amazing. I remember watching him as I was a kid eyes glued to the tv because I knew if I blinked I’d miss the KO. Lightning speed! Amazing power. They’ll never be another.
At 3:28 Donny Long's own right leg tries to abandon him and leave the ring.🤣
My man Donnie Long already looks Punch drunk like he's already ready taking a nap before the fight even starts 😂😂🤣🤜🏾💥🤛🏾
3:13 🤣 almost flew out the ring💀
