    Thank you Mike. Seeing fellow pickers leaving garage sales/estate sales with hundreds if not several thousands of merchandise can be depressing and trigger the I "HAVE" to find something to buy gene. Getting comfortable walking away empty handed is a huge part of the battle when it comes to accidentally building a worthless death pile. Tough lesson to learn.
    Blessings,
    K.T.

    I love your videos. As a hopeful early retiree, your content is so relatable and gives me a lot of hope. There are some eBay resellers who have been pretty negative lately and as a reseller hoping to use eBay as my main retirement income source, that concerns me, so your positivity is so encouraging! Thank you! One question… does it just take time to become a full time seller? As in, having enough in sales to be able to use it as a full time income? I’ve been reselling part time for about 7 months and working really hard at it but still only selling 5-10 things a week.

    • @goldenstatepicker
      @goldenstatepicker  ปีที่แล้ว

      You really have to have good sourcing skills. Networking and find people who will sell you stuff in bulk, and others who will point in the right direction. It all depends on yourself. I did it in 1.5 years. Now I don't have really any debt. So, that makes a huge difference. It can be done, but will take patience and some time. Best to you.

    I think calculated shipping hurts sales, it seems like it is charging the buyer significantly more than they need to be charged. I mostly sell clothes and they cost $7.60 or $7.90 to ship and I charge $9 or $9.50 but calculated shipping would charge the buyer like $11 to $15 and then they don't buy it. I've also experimented with free shipping by listing two identical items with the exact same net cost to the buyer, and the one with buyer paying shipping got twice the views the sold way faster than the free shipping.

    Did anyone else notice what ebay is not doing in the Performane tab?
    Ebay is not deducting the FedEx and UPS shipping expense again. Only USPS.
    At a quick glance it is showing an inflated bottom line.
    Scroll down the summary page and you will see the actual numbers.
    A few months ago ebay did this for a month. It messed up the numbers for two full months before it completely reversed itself.
    I believe this is done by design to purposely mislead sellers. Mostly newer sellers and those discouraged with poor sales. At a quick glance, they receive a more optimistic, but false, snapshot of their profitability.
    For me, this makes the quick glance tab mostly useless.
    The remaining information below, looks pretty accurate.

    I am with you on 8 out of 10.
    I do accept 30 day returns. I don't get many buyer returns, so no biggie here.
    It blows my mind seeing the Amazon returns at UPS.
    I do Promote. Apparently, my category needs some promoting. Without it, my sales tank. This is probably due to my getting top dollar for an item along with hefty shipping charged on top. Most sellers in my category often give their items away with free shipping.
    Appearing near the top of a heavily populated field is a must.
    I will add some of my don't do things.
    1. I don't do best offer.
    Buy it now only.
    2. I don't take fancy pictures. Mostly just on the floor or on my concrete driveway.
    White? What is white?
    3. I don't use many specifics. As Joe Friday said, "just the facts"
    4. I don't use bubble wrap. I have a better system to fill boxes and protect fragile items.
    5. I don't waste time going to thrift stores or garage sales. I have 4 main suppliers that have more than enough merchandise arriving every day. I usually make two 4 hour trips per week on a rotating basis. I am in their top tier of customers and they appreciate my business. I sometimes receive special discounts and freebies.
    The bottom line is every reseller has a unique set of circumstances. Our business models have a lot in common but there are still other variations to take into consideration.
    I always enjoy your common sense approach to reselling.

      @@crystalcole888
      For the majority of items I sell, I need to suspend them within sometimes awkward configurations.
      Bubble wrap could work but the amount needed and time and cost to achieve a good fit, places it down my list.
      It tried packing peanuts which worked but too much of a mess. Cut up pooll noodles works but time factor isn't ideal. Pooll noodles still have some specialized uses.
      What gives me an almost 100% success rate is crumpled up, heavy duty paper. It can be shaped to fit all voids inside the package. For me it makes the perfect cushion.
      Before you ask about weight. The label cost for very large packages is based more on dimensions rather than weight. (DIM)
      I buy it in large rolls at Lowes or Home Depot. It is used mostly by painters when masking large areas like windows or doors.
      This concept came to me thinking back many years ago when newspapers were abundant and piles of old ones stacked up. Crumpled up newspapers were the "gold standard" for cushioning breakable items. And free for the taking.
      The price for the rolls I used has gone up with the recent inflation but it still works great for me.
      By the way, this is how FedEx does it also.
      Thanks for asking.

    • @goldenstatepicker
      @goldenstatepicker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do like that craft paper. I also just use plain newspaper as filler. The craft paper that has some weight is really nice. Yes, it's mostly cubics that are more the cost than the weight. Thanks for the comment.

Most major pickers will tell you they don't either. I have it down to a science. Every day I MAKE MONEY OFF MY SHIPPING. That is called taking into account all supplies and my time. I make quite a bit of extra $$ using calculated shipping. Takes me literally 30 seconds to put the item on the scale and measure what size box, bubble wrap and paper would be needed. Most of the “major” TH-cam resellers use calculated shipping…whom exactly are you talking about that doesn’t (not including those that do free shipping)?? Not to say that you are totally incorrect, but saying that calculated shipping is wrong is just incorrect info. Jmo. Thanks for the video!!

    I really stick to don't buy just to buy. I made the newbie mistakes, but not anymore. Another thing you were talking about is the two guys on your shoulders buy and don't buy. If you have been reselling for awhile and you get a gut feeling about don't buy, then you probably shouldn't. Experience is telling you it isn't a good thing to buy that item.

    I offer free returns for the same reason you give. They can return it anyway for free. I believe it gives buyers a little confidence. My return rate is almost zero. Now like you touched on, clothing and similar items a no return policy could reduce returns as those who buy will hopefully ask questions that could prevent a return before they buy. But, I might be giving buyers too much credit! Lol

    The last tip is definitely the best one! I've been guilty of just "buying for the sake of buying", especially if I can't find anything decent that day. But if it doesn't meet my criteria, or I'm feeling doubtful, I'm learning to be tougher and put it back on the shelf. 😊

    Yep Mike, I live outside of Chicago and I do make money on shipping, (most of the time). It is an advantage. I would rather have your advantage in sourcing in your area. It is tough sourcing out here.

    • @goldenstatepicker
      @goldenstatepicker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I do have a big advantage with my sourcing. So, thanks for the comment and watching my channel.

    I only set free when I’m listing commodity type items. Fortunately, most of my listings are the type Mike sells and are more rare with little competition so I can charge shipping with no push back.

    Mike is 100% correct in you get out what you put in. As long as you’re priced right!

    I am going to try the flat rate shipping. I live in central Indiana and have always done calc shipping but your shipping points make sense so I will try it out. Also, I might have missed it, but do you do OBO on all your items? Thanks Mike!

    • @goldenstatepicker
      @goldenstatepicker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do OBO on all ads. If you do shipping right you will make money being in Indiana. Don't give your shipping away.

    Shipping is really "shipping and handling". Buyers seem like they've never shipped anything in their life. Haha, they must think it's a free government service or something! They have exceedingly unrealistic price and transit time expectations.
