I’ve been selling for 3 months and I’m currently at $7,800 in sales. I list when I have time. I have listed everyday before and my sells are the same either way. ( so I do not stress over that whole list everyday thing) what I have learned the past 3months…There are good days and bad days with sales. I steer clear of heavier items unless it’s really going to bring a good profit bc the shipping costs are ridiculous. I offer free shipping. Most things I do not sell with best offer. I set a reasonable price for the buyer but one that still makes profit. I do have a few heavier items that are still listed from before I realized those items are not worth the $3 profit I will make in the end, so i added calculated shipping to those items and in the description box I stated that the shipping was calculated from my location to theirs and I do not make profit off of the shipping. Being open and honest will get you way more sales. People know if a listing looks shady it probably is… like an item listed for $5 and $45 for shipping. That is just an insult to a buyer, they are not dumb but doing that basically makes them feel like the seller assumes they are also I can not stress this enough, take GOOD pictures!!! As someone who also buys a lot on EBay and other sites when I come across an item with one picture and a wimpy description it pisses me off and I immediately move on. Take the pictures as if you were the one looking to buy the item. I promise this makes a huge difference. What would you want to know about the item if you were buying it personally. Lastly, I stick to name brand items that are popular and in really good shape. Meaning just because you find a north face jacket doesn’t mean it will sell for $80 if the Zipper doesn’t work and the arms are ripped off 😂 if you do sell it for cheap and make sure to state the flaws and take pictures. People will still buy flawed items when you are honest about the flaws. I sell lots of them but I make sure it’s known. I know this is long. But I hope it may help someone, somewhere ❤

I have been selling on eBay for nearly 5 years. I have had a very successful reselling career. But…I’m quitting…and there are multiple reasons why others are as well. Higher thrift prices, lower sales prices, less sales velocity, higher fees, eBay’s moving target and no playbook provided…all businesses require adjustments thru the years…but time vs profitability is always the determining factor…and for me and many others the math is no longer mathing. Time to be smart and shift gears elsewhere.
With that being said..for those staying or just getting here…Chris is one worth following.

Platforms depend on what you're selling. You have to research them all based on what the most common items are that you sell. You have to put the time in. No one can tell you which is the best platform. For instance, if you're selling games, it's not going to go over well on Ruby. You can sell on multiple platforms.

Well said, the best business strategy I would say is dont use a platform like ebay given the option because they dictate too much of your bottom line, your ability to function, and it is borderline legally suspect quite often some of the practices they undertake. Do not see some of the things ive seen on almost any other platform to such a degree. Nor am I paying as much fees. I could make more and actually have room to grow without ebay a restrictive ebay dictatorship by just building my own website and doing some minimal marketing on multiple basically free to use channels. All in all would work out cheaper having a website than an ebay shop subscription too. Probably cost me less in advertising too lol.

      Horrible
      I’m deleting that platform
Over the course of a year I sold 791 and had to pay 320 on fees, and I charge shipping to the customers.
      Horrible platform for any dealer
It’s literally more expensive than Amazon and way more complicated to navigate

I've been selling on eBay for quite awhile now, mostly for fun and gearing up to have some extra income when I retire in a few years if needed. My biggest problem with eBay is that they allow obvious scam artists to give negative feedback. Example: "Item was delivered but was stolen from my mailbox". eBay allowed that negative feedback. I could go on.

    • @carolmchale4348
      @carolmchale4348 ปีที่แล้ว

There are ways to deal with scammers…. It is out of your control if it was delivered…. I tell them to contact their postal service, check with their neighbors etc. stolen items are not the sellers responsibility. Also if you suspect fraud tell them you will file a police report if they push it was stolen or encourage them to usually shuts them down. The other scammers out there I just tell them I will file a police report and IC3 or a report with the federal trade commission trust me they go away… if they truly are a scammer poof they disappear from eBay in seconds. Probably make another profile but I am good with that. I also report them to ebay as well, report a buyer. I have never had an issue with ebay not siding with me! It is a pain in the butt but give any platform a police report number and you get attention. Your local police probably won’t do anything but it does get filed. Only filed applies report once on a high dollar item. Got every cent back! Document everything in the chat and be polite.

Not everyone wants to become the mega-store with thousands of items in it, but I've got caught up in it as most of us have. The whole point of end and selling similar is to fix old inventory and constantly rotating your inventory. Shadow ban doesn’t exist. eBay encourage to keep updating your inventory. The main point of ending and selling similar is to correct the algorithm that isn’t working for that item based on the previous title and Cassini is smart but not that smart if you change pictures around change title change price and increase promotion it works I’ve been doing eBay 12 + yes .I’ve had items sell straight after ending and selling similar , with in days. I disagree. Not everyone can afford to list additional hundred items instead of revising 100 items a day. you have to look at things from a different perspective. Rotating your inventory instead of just adding to it and making it grow. You should be rotating and selling through old inventory as well as adding new.

Also, they absolutely shadow your listings. That's why you search for something and there's zero results but you're seeing completely unrelated products that have nothing to do with what you searched for. Yet those listings are put up by sellers and been been paid for as *"SPONSORED ADS", aka, "promoted listings."* Then go to Google and look for the same item you just searched for and you'll see the actual eBay listings for the same product. They're banking money not on fees, but charging just to be seen on their site. They are the "Sponsored ad" advertisers now. There's no way to explain it away.

  • @pennyluck9696

Well where do I begin ... ebay sellers leave for a plethora of reasons, here's just a few: Believing youtube videos of sellers showing "haul" videos with ridiculously inflated prices (ex: I'll sell this crappy old life is good t-shirt for $25 - $30), believing that all you need to do is "list at least 10 items a day", Unable to find enough "desirable/sellable" items to be able to LIST CONSISTENTLY, Unable to afford to purchase more inventory (so that you can list consistently) because your sales are so slow. When you start studying certain successful seller's stores it's very very obvious that they (mostly) have the same thing in common - HUGE stores with THOUSANDS of listings and they list large quantities of new listings daily - more than your average person can find (one lists 50 a day - there's no way I can find 350 "desirable" items every week!!! So in conclusion I think many ebay sellers leave because they're expecting the same results that they see/read about! And no, I'm not making excuses - these are all simply facts ;)

Been selling media on ebay for 4 years .I list quality items every day at fair prices. I have 100% positive feedback and am a top Rated plus seller On the last stock earnings report ebay was focused on increasing the revenue projections on income from promoted listings from sellers moving forward. Has me worried that we might need to increase prices to satisfy ebays new business model of what I am thinking wanting 7% promotion fee's to get traffic. I have seen soft sales periods in the past 4 years though nothing like what we have seen in the past 30 days. I am not trying to be negative.. Just being real with the data to back up this comment.

My account was suspended by eBay for selling a perfectly legitimate record album purchased by me in 1982. In fact, at least five other eBay sellers have the exact same album for sale. Not a single one of the sellers were suspended for selling it. When eBay starts punishing sellers for listing legitimate items for sale, we all have problems. By the way, I'm a top rated + seller. People who were once embarrassed to go in thrift stores now go in shoulders held high and sometimes holding hands with their babe like it's Saks Fifth Avenue. Why I don’t use eBay any longer:
It takes me 4 or 5 times longer to list an item on eBay than Mercari. Their algorithm often hides my listings despite promoted listings. I get far less views on my items on eBay than Mercari and Mercari has less traffic.
I absolutely can’t stand eBay and what they have become vs. eBay around 2017 or so without their stupid algorithm and unnecessarily large product details.
Please keep it simple Mercari, you are doing it right.
Edit: I’ve sold on eBay since 1998. While I agree we shouldn’t necessarily blame the platform, eBay has put obstacles up in my way vs. comparable selling platforms. Amazon does so much better for me as does Mercari.

You wouldn't be able to leave your eBay store to your children. eBay does not allow stores to be transferred or sold. It is an awful, ridiculous, unfair policy. Many families work together building a store and if the owner on file passes it cannot be left to family. If a married couple works a store together and splits...the owner on file gets the store. Something for families who run eBay stores together should think about.

    • @lclark715

100% Correct. We found that out the hard way...my husband was retired late last year and we knew he would have the time to devote to our store. Called eBay 4x to inquire about changing the SSN on our store to his SSN and were told it could be done and what we needed to do in order for this to happen. It took months to get everything accomplished (in the meanwhile he had poured a lot of time and energy into my store) and we called eBay back and were told we couldn’t change the ownership. That we had to move the almost 500 listings by hand over to his store. This had never been mentioned in my PREVIOUS 4 CONVERSATIONS with eBay ‘Customer Service.’ So, he basically wasted a lot of time and effort in building up a store that had the wrong tax info on it. I was not working the store - he was because eBay CSR’s told us we could change ownership. My store was much more established than his and we wanted to use mine if possible. If we’d have been given correct information he could have been pouring work into building up his store. I even spoke to Supervisors and they don’t give a rat’s ass what incorrect info their CSR’s give you or how much trouble that false information causes. They wouldn’t even transfer over the listings from one store to another. We’re sorry is all they kept saying. They didn’t offer ANY solution. Our sales have plummeted as a result from about $2,500 a month to about $600. It is extremely discouraging to say the least. They don’t care about their sellers AT ALL.

For a person who want to leave beneficiaries to their children, you must have your own company. Ebay doesn't have a ESPP (Employee Stock Purchasing Plan) available to sellers. Ebay is just a third-party buying and selling platform, which sellers cannot purchase shares and stocks in the business to gain part ownership in the company.

I believe why is that they watch the resellers who post "I made 2,468 within my first week, you can too" videos. Then this new small reseller thinks off the bat he/she will make a few thousand with no knowledge on what items to get..then if they dont get the same results within a few week, they think it's not working then quit. When I began, I didn't have high set expectations. Which left more room to learn more and watch myself grow little by little. Don't get so high on expectations! The resellers who make 1k+ a week have alot of time and experience. If you're new and want the same results. DO.YOUR.RESEARCH!!...Learn the business a bit more and continue to build. Don't listen to naysayers who are on the outside looking in. 9/10 they are stuck in the comfort of a typical 9to5 and have no knowledge on owning a business or have never given it any mind..so of course it's a bad idea to them. Majority of the naysayers I had are now wanting to learn how to do it too..but as I said, they are too in the comfort zone to run it as a business. Keep pushing forward. Just think..all corporations all started as small business and grew through time. Even Sam Walton (Walmart)..he started as a small general store that was open only 5 hours a day...from that small start to the world's #1 retailer.

Watched this video during my office break. Reselling is just on the side for me and no way close to what I'm making here at my 8-4. Started by selling stuff from around the house. I do see my efforts pay off as I'm making better buys, listing regular, currently selling 4% of my inventory each day and maintaining to one room in the house. Took a few months to get to that. I think there are resellers that watch those youtuber haul videos and wonder why they aren't finding similar items. That's a disservice and only giving them watch hours. Each area will have it's own special items to find and you gotta have more than a couple sources for inventory as well as knowledge.

I’ve had a goal of 10 per day, it’s usually 5 for maybe a week and a half it was one a day at best. the last (and my first) month I have sold almost half my inventory. I studied like I am in collage for several weeks about my business. I sold 4 things just today after taking the whole weekend off and posted 10 things the last two days. I keyword my titles, I mostly sell things that research tells me is trending or people want. My goal now is to up my Inventory and daily post with higher priced items and a higher sell through rate. If I can double what I’ve done my first month that is a good income stream. I’m having fun and I don’t have to work 70 hours away from my kids. Not a lot of complaints here. Any work takes a lot of time and studying what your doing.

The main reason small businesses quitting eBay is eBay advertising system, They tell you the (suggested rate) for advertising and sometimes it's 15% if you don't advertise the suggested rate your listing will not show up in first 10 search results and, Basically it's either you pay another 15% on top of the 12% they already charge or good luck selling your items

Well, if you buy promoted listing...who are you competing against? I am assuming another promoted lister. eBay gets it's 12 percent from each of the competitors. I only see one winner...😅😅😅😅😂😂😂

Kind of depends on your CSG and your business model, i.e. slow dime or fast nickel.. or REALLY slow dollar, lol.
Another thing is, while everyone should be working towards a higher ASP, cheaper items say your average $12 T-shirt, those sales of “garbage”are what helps build your velocity. Especially when your store isn’t like 5000 items… Still you need to be at 1% or better turn. Like sometimes accepting an offer that you would rather not, but, perhaps it builds a velocity in the system.. that lower profit flip leads to more sales activity. Hopefully.
And if your business model is to race to the bottom, you have to do what’s right for you not other people. Like those who feel it is chivalrous or something to “protect a brand” (oh, puhleeze!)
Like Chris says in the video there’s so many different small variables involved that contribute to your success or not…
PS we do end & sell similar but it’s not a religion, and it’s proven empirically to move our dead stock. Even w/o pumping up (Improving) the listing.

I’m quitting selling on eBay as well. But there’s a lot of reasons for it. One big reason is scam buyers . Another is feeing me to death on ebay so it jacks the price up to a no sell point. I’ve notice ebay tapping into your shipping costs as well so when you charge shipping you pay the shipping the buyer pays for eBay takes a piece of that in total sales number instead of taking the shipping out of the total sale . So effectively ebay is stealing from you also. I’ve had enough of that. So I’m shutting down on ebay. Stagnant sales very stagnant sales even on high sell through rate items. Insertion feee percentage fee nipping your shipping charges and finally now there’s promotion fees. I’m stopping all online sales. I don’t like the way it operates soooo I’m gonna open a physical shop instead . I eliminate scam buyers , I eliminate stagnant sales I eliminate theft I eliminate nipping of my profits etc. I know what my expenses are in a physical location I have considered opening a flip shop . What I mean by that is designed and built to sell to resellers . I already have a template in mind for exactly this.

Chris, I hope you realize that sometimes sellers can have the best price, sell a high demand item with great pictures and great description and Ebay might not let them sell that item, no matter what they do. I have some items that are 30 - 40% cheaper than anyone else on Ebay and the platform will not let me sell it for 2 months, until the algorithm decides it's my turn to sell it. Sometimes, you are at the mercy of the algorithm and there is nothing you can do to change that.

Honestly quick solution, have come to discover if you put your ad rate high enough you will make sales lol. Ebay is self interested, if they will make good money from your sales in ad revenue you will make sales. I noticed on some listings the difference between 9.5% ad rate at a 10% lower price, and 10% ad rate at a 10% higher price, I would unituitively make more sales (somewhere in the range of 33-100% more) at the higher price, purely because ebay would give the listing more exposure to interested buyers with the higher rate. Which also makes me question the whole system, because the view rate did not change drastically, nor did the watchers, but 0.5% at a higher price would increase sales drastically, so there is probably a set number ad wise on their system where they give sellers greater priority on the platform, and the normal numbers you see may be questionable. I've noticed though you can game it slightly, because the algorithm will give you higher placement for sales/page views essentially, you can do short spurts of high ad rate, followed by short spurt of lower, and keep the listing highly placed and still with momentum without consistently getting done over by crazy fees. Also good to do high ad rates prior to big selling periods, so by the time the big selling period comes around, you are strong in the algorithm, and can then lower the ad rate, making more profit whilst retaining a good amount of sales - and then you are also not in a battle with ad spending rates with big brands during these periods, because you probably wont win combined with the fact ebay will also push these more. But this strategy will also slowly squeeze out your competiton granted you make more sales and they struggle for market exposure as a result.

I quit because when covid ended, all of a sudden Goodwills and estate sale companies raised the prices up. So high that the second day wasn't even profitable. So, Ebay isn't my problem. Gas, shipping cost, even shipping material is up higher. So yeah economics was it for me.

I suggest starting out as a small eBay seller as a hobby and don't quite your day job or you most likely will experience burnout!
I don't have a problem waiting to get top dollar for my niche items, because I have a day job.
If I like the things I'm selling, They are very nice, well kept and I have other uses for the items....I am willing to wait longer for sales.
    I am unique though.

With ebay fees i am loosing over 30% because you have to pay for the additional add ons if you want people to actually find your product now. I tested on a few items that weren't selling. Paid for the extra addons and all the sudden they are selling again. Loosing over 30% on ebay plus my materials and labor i am making hardly anything. I may have to jump ship and find an alternative.

The other issue you are not mentioning is the capital that you have as a large seller. You can put 10-30 new items a day on. The smaller sellers do not have this capital.

The issue is here, that Ebay say that your listings become effectively stale and hidden at about 6 months. Which I also know from experience is true. So what do you do with those items? Just de-list them and throw them away at a loss? I’m not sure that’s the right answer for most businesses either. Ideally, yes we would be buying items in that will sell, but nothing is a sure thing.

      @ThisisJo ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@pkzenk2158 yes, I think 3 months and they are buried. But, yes they are free falling from the top of the search results very fast soon after listing. And of course if you are in a category like clothes (as I am), it’s hard to have unique / rare items so it means you do get lost in the mix.

But just last week I started listing my better items on there but haven't gotten 1 sale yet. You also need to list consistently and typically Poshmark works better for higher dollar merchandise . If you’re selling clothes under 30 or 35 dollars or not great brands , you’ll struggle

but you could say relist your entire store of 200 items and keep listing 10 or 20 new things a day. i think to some degree relisting old items that have become stagnant will make them get more action than letting them just sit.
