Holley use to have lots of recommendations and tuning tips on their web site. Usually with a rebuild kit there are lots of little tips in the instructions as well.
I've owned lots of Holleys and still have a whole shelf full of them. once you learn to tune them you won't want to run anything else.

Agreed. I used to have an Edelbrock and thought it was great and I guess I still do. I now have a double pumper and took the time to learn as much as I could about it (there's always more that I could learn though) . I've been running the Holley for over a year now and I love it.

When I was in high school a lot of kids would get the 750 double pumper & put it on their very low compression way to many pollution control engine & wonder why gas was coming out the spark plug holes . My brother in law and I wanted to turn one into an ash tray . But it was just to much carb for the motor . I like the afb's they seem to be more user friendly

Hey tony. I’m looking at a 83 F-100 with a 600 Holley 4bbl. Guy says it runs good when it’s cold. But when the engine warms up it loads up and floods out and stalls. Any idea what the issue may be?

I use the idle screw to square up the transition slot, then slightly crack open the secondaries to achieve idle, I noticed you did neither, will that be in the advanced tuning vid

WOW, Tony. Thanks a bunch for bringing back Fond memories. Of tuning and setting up the normal Holleys and the Double Pumpers.
Had a Large double on my 350 Chevy small block. After getting it in place and bringing the fuel in right.
Would take my truck around the block and after setting every thing just right. My Truck would dance!
Foot off of the Gas. Almost dead stop, just rolling. Tap the Gas it would jump forward again! Any good music worked. LOL
Any Long Highway or Freeway traveling. Just cut the Gas out until before dying. Back a touch, then adjust idle to lower rpms.
Best way to get better MPG, and save cash too.
There isn't any vehicle that you can't tune just right with those Hollys!
Thanks again for the video. And it looks like you had Fun doing it too!

I feel if people should learn how to diagnose and repair the problem rather than just replacing parts until they hit the problem.
I like Holley, Eddy (carter) and Q jets and they all get bad raps, some people blame the brand when in fact it is their own lack of knowledge and inexperience that is the problem........rant over!

Holly carbs ALWAYS make a fuel stained mess on your pretty aluminum intake anytime you need to tune something major on them. The only way to minimize the ruining of the finish on your intake was to be a strick Nazi about fuel spillage and remove one lower floatbowl screw and drain into a cup. Hard to beat their full throttle power and response when they are properly setup though. Seams like I remember ALWAYS fucking with my Holly carbs.
Carters & Rochesters I seam to remember it was always just set and forget. They didn't need the continual adjustments. They are easier and cleaner to work on once you understand how they all work.

I always adjust idle mixture screws with a vacuum gauge finding peak vacuum. Once you find peak vacuum you can take that value and divide it in half to get you in a good range for the size of the power valve you need. Example 15 pounds of vacuum would be a 7.5.

    • @jakefriesenjake
      @jakefriesenjake 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly. Some guys say thats wrong. They want you to check your Vac at your cruise speed, then go down a couple numbers (12" at cruise = 9.5" power valve)
While it does kinda work at cruise speed (dumps fuel too early for me), where it really screws things up is taking off from a red light. My cruise Vac is 15", my idle Vac is 5", so I tried an 8.5" pv. When I take off, my Vac pings to 12" maybe, then drops to below 8.5". My power valve opens and dumps in fuel at 2000 rpms, part throttle (pings 10 afr when I want it 13.5 to 14:1 afr).
I put in a 4.5" pv, all is good now

I once had a Chevy 350 that I put a 750 Vac secondary Carb on.Mild cam also & old cast iron Exhaust manifold on to.It ran like a pig on full throttle but ran perfect on a Dyno.Turned out the fuel line was getting to hot next to the exhaust manifold & the fuel vapour was drawing in on acceleration full throttle & stuffing up the fuel pump. Also the fuel pump was over 7lbs pressure & this stuffed up the float level in the carbi.Next I found out the Mufflers were 2 restrictive & this buggered up acceleration also.On a good note I had a 351 Cleveland that ran way to rich just off idle & a USA magazine said drill out the butterfly,s 1/8 to lean out the mix & bring back the idle mixture use.Bingo,it worked a treat. The 750 double pumper was drilled 4mm in the end & fuel economy came back as well as clean spark plugs. It was the lumpy cam that created this drama & I had to advance the timing from 8 to 12 static & drop total from 38 to 27 deg all in by 2500 rpm .Also it had closed chamber 302 heads on it giving high compression & was told they had to come off for our low octane fuel. Not true I got 400 HP after all this and a set of 2.5 in Super Turbo Mufflers. The 1250KG T bucket got 11.8 seconds on a 1/4 mile like this any day of the week.

I have a hp950 on a 406. I took the linkage from another carb and revuilt it. I have it set with a 50cc primary with the pink cam and a 30cc on back. Some guys say I should do it the other way? I figgured having it on the primary will give me better 0-60s.. what do u think?

Hey Unc..Please look into this. I think something is different on the new Holleys. I am not the first to see this. Brand new Holley 670 Street Avenger. If I set it for 1.5 turns out, my eyes bleed from fuel odor. No kidding, I had to wear a respirator to be under there. Final setting ? A small hair past a half turn from fully closed. I am not the first to see this. Scares me I am too lean at idle but any more, you can really smell fuel. Any thoughts ?

Tony, I rebuilt my 302 in my 70 mustang mach 1, bored block .60 mild cam, long tube headers, and swapped the stock 2 bbl intake and carb with a dual plane high-rise and a Holley 4160, the cable throttle linkage is 2 to 3 inches short now, do they make a linkage kit for that or just add to the cable the best you can?

You are the Man. Not only you have the knowledge, you can also transmit it. I was wandering if you could help me with a question please. I am now 67 years old, and in my younger days I use to work on cars. Recently I have changed a 1986 Automatic Full size Bronco 351 Cleveland rebuild and with no many miles on it, from dedicated "LPG", back to Petrol, ( or what you guys in the States call "GAS", I live in Australia by the way). I fitted a 600 Holley Vacuum secondary which I had put it together at least 20 years ago. It starts at first go and idle to perfection and smooth, but I smell fuel vapour at starting, more like an exhaust fumes like, even in the engine bay. Accelerates smooth and quick .I changed the" MSD" mechanical advance bush into the blue , All up I have 32 degrees advance with 11/12 basic. the bush for LPG I had to make it myself because it didn't existed in the distributer kit , etc. .Once on the road I'll have to finally tune the through out springs, to suit the mechanical advance. Question is... : way it smells so reach??,. adjusted "carter" electric fuel pressure to 6 PSI with cold temperature anther the bonnet and engine . Fuel pump should start together with the starter motor solenoid at firs ( because of the safety switch installed), but, because it is/was only a Sunday car, or just to go bush, when I rebuild the engine I fitted a secondary oil pick up, Just a tube like, just off the inside bottom of the oil sump) in other to pressurize the block before occasionally start it, and what it does, it starts the fuel pump a bit prematurely, maybe coursing a rich condition???. I didn't had this problem with "LPG". Or I am imaging thinks???? So I dropped the Fuel pump pressure to 5 and a 1/4 "PSI" , I will restart the truck tomorrow in day time.. " too late now". Will like to see if the enrichment is gone, but a good needle and seat valve and good float adjusted (as "I THINK" they are???), should stop extra fuel passing needle and seat, unless the "O" rings are flatted???? . The carburetor was kipped in a seal plastic box, and when started first time two days ago, the throttle plate leaked a drop or two only, out of the secondary side plate shaft, (and no more now),near the secondary vacuum unit. I hope I gave you enough description, I know is never enough. You response and opinion at your time, is very much appreciated. Kind Regards... "COS".

So I let someone talk me into putting a Holley 750 on my 318 , mild cam, pistons 30 over. Never got response I hoped for..so..just installed Holley 600 double pumper, vacuum secondary.. anyway, can't get idle down. Vacuum hoses are good, 600 hooked up exactly like 750 was..is it possible my timing is the issue?. I didn't want to mess with factory settings yet

THE SIZING OF THIS DESIGNED PART is everything, just like sizing the cam for the use, this carburetor has been masterminded since 1970,me, is use the 350 500 cfm two barrels for all of my needs, for drag racing and top end speed, its a proven track winner, LINDSAY proved two of them were even better than mechanical fuel injection on the fastest SUPERBIRD in the world on the bonneville salt flats, carburetors are superior for total all out fuel flow,it was a normally aspirated and damn impressive hemi, they function pretty good on blowers too

Interesting information Uncle Tony, although the Holley Manuals can be jam packed full of Carburettor goodness, they can be a little vague at times. Wholly, I think the eagerness young blokes can be at fault here wanting bolton power - fit and forget so to speak - and wonder why they run into trouble for rushing a job they needed to take their time with. I believe the mystery of Holley Carburettor tuning is solved, so it makes more sense now. I did see and read an article last year where a double pumper was modified for street/bracket racing for aesthetics, power, metering and airflow, which was very interesting indeed. Thankyou for sharing this, Cheers :-)

Missed powervalve. If you know how much manifold vacuum your engine produces before ordering carb you can get pv installed. If not stock carb come with 6.5 hg pv. Good for 13 hg maifold vac. I have 425 hp cam large lift large duration low manifold vac (10 hg) the math is manifold vac ÷2= pv size. Ex. 10 hg manifold vac 10 ÷2= 5.0 hg power valve

My 800 DP manual tells me to use some Folded Wire to shove into the idle orifice if the idle is "off". So I did that. Idle vacuum is 6 so I use a 4 powervalve. 72-76 mainjets , 50cc pump,.... But a 650 pulls much better below 6500 rpm, the 800 makes 50hp or more above 6500
The carb shown is a single pump spread bore

Hey uncle tony ! Can u do a video on "vacuum"???? What is it? Why do u need it? Whats "vacuum secondaries"? Why some cars run wipers n headlights off of it?? Why do some guys jus stick a bolt in a vacuum line to block it off n send it down the road??? Ur expertise n explanation would sure be helpful to many i assume! Also, more content for u would be "exhaust back pressure" do u need it n why?? Many have wayyy different opinions! Btw- subbed from day 1 ,love ur vids n im also from the days of racing at "fountain ave" and "franny lew" NY in late 70's (i was a kid riding w older brother n friends)and 80's (started drivin)!!! Keep up the good work droppin ur knowledge n i wish good things for you and yours!

Uncle Tony. I need your advice. I have a new holley 670 cfm vacuum secondary with electric choke. my question is, what should the cold start RPM be? mine starts at 2600 RPM and seems a bit high. I have looked around and the closest info I find is it should idle around 1500 RPM. I have an automatic, so does it mean in gear or neutral? Can you make a video on cold starting tuning with electric choke please?

Regarding dual quad setup (specifically for progressive linkage), is there a rule of thumb for putting dual carbs on a fresh engine (assuming the heads and cam/valvetrain can flow it)? Do you set both carbs up at 80% tune from the start, or do you tune and work on the primary before the secondary? Just looking for a high level understanding based on the content you shared with us in this video. Thanks!

    • @UncleTonysGarage
      @UncleTonysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Generally speaking, you need to jet the carbs down when using in an 8bbl set-up. Example, 76's would be dropped down to 72's or so.
You treat the idle settings on both carbs equally, even on a progressive set-up, UNLESS you are using a dedicated "secondary carb" that does not have idle circuitry included. Example of that would be the factory front carb used on the Street Hemi

Holy cow UT could have propped up his Mopar or No car status up by explaining that Chrysler was the first to use a downdraft float carb on a production vehicle in 1929. Guess who Carl Breer it's designer was employed by?? Non other than Holley.
