- The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra performs Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 under the baton of Chief Conductor Alan Gilbert. Anna Prohaska sings the soprano solo in the fourth movement.
Concert recording from December 2020 at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Due to the Corona pandemic this concert was played exclusively for live streaming and without on-site audience.

In this 4th symphony it is always the 3rd movement at 26:51 that has taken my main interest. Not so astonishing perhaps, with its calm harmony even in its crescendos. As if a full moon is up and shines even over the dancefloor. Thanks Alan Gilbert and Elbphilharmonie Orchester for this illumination!

Fantastic composition, diector, orchestra and soloist. Just totally mesmerizing. Do young people growing up these days (in college, maybe) understand that this type of music is the hallmark of Western Civilization? I rarely hear a performance of Mahler 4 that doesn't move me, but this is a lovely one. And it may be in my mind, but the fact that it was done during COVID, of necessity in an empty hall, adds some poignancy. Looks like Alan Gilbert landed in a good place after New York.

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser spätromantischen und perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit farbenprächtigen doch perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente sowie durchsichtiger doch herrlicher Stimme der genialen Sopranistin. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Chefdirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut analysierten Tempo und mit perfekt kalkulierter Dynamik. Wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

It's a lovely performance. The Covid orchestra placement is interesting. I'm wondering if they could hear each other well enough. I'm also sort of amazed that in the darkest days of the pandemic, the German musician's union didn't require masks on all non-wind players. What will we think about these two years of music in the future?

The text of the fouth movement is based on “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”.
Le mvt III ruhevoll me transporte au-delà des nuages, mes pensées ne sont plus terrestres. Je remarque que c'est presque toujours le cas pour les mouvements lents chez Mahler, comme chez Bruckner et bien entendu chez Beethoven. Par ailleurs, mes compliments à A Gilbert pour la 4eme de Bruckner avec le même merveilleux orchestre.

Mmmhhh, so streng sehen wir das nicht - aber wir wissen nach diesen Pandemie-Jahren doch auch ganz genau, wie wir es am liebsten haben!!
Die vielgerühmte Elbphilharmonie klingt sehr schön ohne Publikum. But I want of course to see it filled with people, me here in northern Sweden listening to this marvelous music.
