- Then NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra (then: NDR Symphony Orchestra) and its former Chief Conductor Christoph Eschenbach perform Mahler's Symphony No. 4 at the Opening Concert of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2010. Christiane Oelze sings the soprano solo in the fourth movement.

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser großartigen und perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit farbenreichen doch perfekt vereinigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Der letzte Satz klingt besonders schön und echt melodisch mit herrlicher Stimme der genialen Sopranistin. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das hoch funktionelle Orchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Wahrlich hörenswert!

Wonderful 4th movement. Perhaps the best I've ever heard. There was such a smooth flow out from the 3rd movement climax that continued on to the soloist and to the closing of the movement.

Outre la merveilleuse prestation de cette magnifique soprano, il faut souligner la formidable cohérence de l'ensemble, et particulièrement le sublime troisième mouvement, exécuté sans pathos, et d'une tenue exemplaire. Bravo à tutti!!

At 46:11 The cymbals and bass drum come in a bar too early !! The 2 timpani players were not put off by the obvious error and continued to play their parts correctly. Very clever that a 2nd timpanist was used for the middle note of the glorious triad of chordal notes of this marvellous opening up of the heavens moment!! BRAVO
That passage is worth the 2nd timpanist.

Presumably you mean triangle and timpani.
I think that the conductor has a lot answer for this mistake as well as he does a very strong downbeat with his baton which was probably why the cymbal player and bass drum thought that was their cue to play. Because the conductor had no score in front of him
could be a factor as well. It was an horrendous error regardless of who is responsible. I feel sorry for the 2 Percussionists .
