It’s a really great tool and super easy compared to traditional picking, the only downside is you need it to fit the keyway. They have them for the standard keyways you’ll find on most locks in your day to day life, but there are locks that you couldn’t use this on because it’s just the wrong keyway. These tools are really cool and useful and powerful, but they open slightly fewer locks than traditional lock picks. I hope I’ve succeeded in conveying that I really like these picks even though I’m talking about a downside of them
I love how complex his explanations got toward the end. "These are mushroom pins. They are like spool pins, but tapered like a mushroom." "Serrated pins are serrated." *chef's kiss* 👌🏼 💯
The goal of all the pin types is more or less the same, to create false sets. Normally, due to manufacturing tolerances, the core is able to rotate very slightly after each pin is set, but a false set allows toe core to rotate without the pin being set properly, which means you need to release pressure and allow the core to turn back a bit to set the pin properly, and can cause you to let other set pins fall back down. Serrated pins have multiple shallow false sets, spools can have deeper false sets (the core turns and needs to be counterrotated farther)
@@sage5296thank u for explaining all that! I didn't really understand the point of the different pins before I read ur comment. U explained it perfectly 👍👍
@@sage5296does that mean that a lock made perfectly with 0 tolerance would be unpickable because you can't turn the barrel while it's locked and thus can't set any pins?

This for some reason is what made it click for me, I finally understand some of your order of operations and what you actually did to pick the lock. I finally get it. God I'm an idiot
I love how these locks, that are clearly for training and entertainment since half the lock is missing to see the pins, end up taking longer to pick than a Masterlock.
Watching your videos makes me want to rise to the challenge and make a lock that's impossible to pick. Knowing absolutely nothing about locks could help me by not following the norm or stop me before I've started. Seeing that I'm lazy, it'll probably be the latter.
the best is a mix of multiple different types, because you get people to second guess themselves also, not pictured, another security pin called a T pin, it's shaped like a nail, and it's installed upside down with a longer and firmer spring than the other driver pins. it was made to have a very light weight and accomodate an extra long and more rigid spring, so that during a bump attack, it'll spring back down before the other pins clear the shear line, but it also doubles as basically a spool pin if you're single pin picking if you wanna learn single pin picking security pins, highly recommend one of those training cylinders with the hex key screws on the top, and a bag of all different pins, but you're probably gonna want multiple of those cylinders because each cylinder has slightly different imperfections. each lock will have a different binding order, but that binding order will be the same across re-pinnings. (the false set binding order may vary based on the width of the security driver pins, but the true binding order, when the driver pin actually clears the shear line, will always be the same)
I used to work for Bank of America from the mid '80s through the '90s. I was an in-house ATM technician. I would often refurbish ATMs to go into new branches, so I learned how to copy keys. I also got to learn how to pin locks so that differently cut keys could open them. And I learned how to make a key for a lock using files to make the cuts and notches. I enjoyed learning some things about locksmithing.
I have to admit, seeing stuff like this and the lockpicking lawyer reminds me how much of security is security theater rather than actual hard-to-break security measures
This video has made me realize it was my lack of patience and knowledge to know I was on the right track and wrongly believed a set was a set vs needing to go back cause it dropped/false set
It’s so interesting watching these videos when I have a lock on my house (and have encountered a couple of other locks already in a short time in my new job at a pick up-drop off dog daycare place) where the key barely works, and you have to kinda force it and/or there’s a trick to getting it to unlock/lock I wonder if picking would be easier, or if it’s somehow more secure (even if it’s frustrating) because lock picking is already so specific and often requires both hands.
Thank you for telling me about this. Now I can finally go back to stealing the locks around my school that I find I have currently stolen. I mean borrowed 136 locks
