If you like lacquer try using a lacquer sanding sealer primer sometime, stuff is awesome. Not necessary, but priming your door panels and rail/stile edges before assembly is nice. It reduces the amount of inside corner sanding you need to do.

Tip : DON’T use hangers!! Your work keeps wobbling as it’s only hung at one point! Use 2 attachment points instead!

Great video and beautiful work handyman! I've been using ppg breakthrough paint for cabinets. Water based, dries as fast as lacquer, and is extremely durable. Rated for foot traffic. I spray it with the graco tc pro cordless and finish is flawless

Happy to hear you read my comment about my painted oak grain cabinets and to hear your feedback. I agree if I was in the business (was once) I wouldn't hand paint them. You have to put out factory finish because that's what the customers expect. I don't have to guess what my expectations are for my own kitchen. (Also am sooo much better at brush painting than the average Joe.) Thanks for this video. Very informative.

Interesting, I think you'd get better results by having the doors flat when you spray them. You'd never be concerned with runs...Place the doors flat on two 1/2 inch by 3/4" strips of wood. Also, with "your" method change the nozzle position so you can spray the door vertically first and then change it quickly back to spray horizontally. You always have to spay the doors in both directions to eliminate the look of lines...I have no idea how I found your channel, but I used to paint cabinet doors professionally in a real cabinet shop. It looks like you got good results. Man...that's a small space to be painting in. Good job.

Build subsequent coats, lather it on. Then sand flat with 320 until no shiny spots appear. Apply final coat(s). It’ll have depth and have that hard candy look and feel.

We was told that our large kitchen was going to cost over $10,000 to replace the old cupboards. Did them through fastcabinetdoors.com and they have the best quality I have seen anywhere. No particle board, hinges and slides for under $3000. So pleased and your so right the kitchen is what sells the house.

Vintage Gopherwood, disagree it’s like anything, if you do your research, prepare everything & follow instructions, do a couple of test runs on a old kitchen cabinet door that either neighbour has thrown out for rubbish pick up, I was quoted from $22k to $35k new kitchen by trade professionals, so all I did cause I kept all appliances & water/power same, $1200 to paint/ including new splash back replaced old tiles, handles etc, I had a stone mason to come in and change the bench top to granite, about $1600 installed, looks great for $2800 only, I have friends who have payed $26k & have had issues with the Tradies even going to consumers affairs as work not to standards, at least you know you have put the time & effort in your own work, also when people come over I tell them it cost $17k as i already had new appliances, they believe me until I explained I did it.

Kitchens sell a house to a point. At certain price points people just replace everything so it’s really the kitchen size rather than the actual stuff in it.

I made bedroom furniture for my daughter and sprayed it with a Titan Airless sprayer, using a latex paint from Benjamin Moore that was designed for furniture. It required a full 16 hours before re-coat. Did 3 coats, first sanding at 220, second at 320. (One portion got 4 because I did a bad job there). The result was as smooth as glass and looked like it was lacquer. Previously, I did some kitchen cabinets with regular trim-paint on oak and it was nowhere near as good as yours. Home owner was trying to save some money.

Trendy colors come & go but white kitchens never go out of style. For long, anyway. They've been around since the early 1900's. White kitchens are pretty, cheerful, bright & clean looking work spaces. Eventually everybody returns to white.

I understand your video is on professional painting . But It really depends on what look you are going for. I work in a custom Cabinet Shop. And we have people who want painted oak cabinets (brand new). Then they rub a darker glaze in them. It makes a unique look when you can see the grain. Also some people like it for the rustic or old redone look. That's one thing I love about Construction And Cabinet building. It really comes down to what you yourself want. There are so many different ways to do things.

MAB used to make a paint called agricultural white, it had a finish like a fingernail paint and lasted for years, I painted a handrail and railing with this paint and you would've thought that the entire handrail was dipped in a paint can, with a beautiful glasslike finish, by the way without all of that prep work.

Do you use lacquer on all your paint grade projects? Do you never use enamel? I’m really intrigued by this idea. Everyone I know uses latex or enamel for cabinets and lacquer only as a clear top coat over stain. Appreciate the videos and would love to hear your response. Thanks!

  • @918scott4

I understand why you used swivel hangers. Yes, they do have to be controlled when spraying but once you need to spray the side, you can without needing to reposition yourself. How many times did I go around to the other side and accidentally touch the project with my sleeve or sprayer hose. ALSO.. this stuff dries so fast you have to keep spraying to retain that "wet edge". Your awesome dude!

Great video, thanks. FWTW, I did brush paint oak cabinets in a house I sold and I didn't hear any negative comments back from agents. I did like the look of the grain coming through. To me a lacquer finish is professional, but so common as to look cheap. I think which to use depends on the overall design. Old farmhouse look is a hot design in my area and uncommon because it costs a bit more because of higher labor. In a more modern design lacquer would be better. Just my 2 cents.
For sure I think lacquer is a more durable finish but I don't find home buyers to be very practicable and instead want a show house.

First off I enjoyed your video and use lacquer base paints a lot. I am very familiar with lacquer base painting. My comment is a safety note for you, Please do not take it the wrong way. As a retired Firefighter and still work in the repair business I can not stress safety enough. I see that you have your compressor in the same area as the spraying. Just a note of caution, its the fumes that can ignite so I see in the video several explosive areas of danger. They are your compressor, lights, electrical outlets. I do not know if you have any mechanical ventilation for the fumes. I have seen first hand how something like this can go bad. It only takes a very small spark for it to go off like a bomb. I will continue to follow you and enjoy your work. Just trying to give a little safety note and I am sure your a very safe person. I hope that you do not take offense to my comments, I meant them in a very good way. Have a great day! And keep building!

I would have suggested using a primer. Also for that to be a hlvp there is a lot of over spray. If any one is interested in getting the. Same finish without out the high. Vocs. I would suggest using Breakthrough from PPG. The lacquer is very bad f or your heart and also very flammable. There was a case in Dallas where a paint company wen in to paint cabinets and ended up catching a.housr on fire. Even your venting has to be right or that as well can start a fire .

Good video! Just curious why you put the hooks in the top of the door, not the bottom where you'll never see it? Also, if you're concerned about their being debris in the gun and you pour the paint out to strain it, you may want to clean the gun out too because anything that doesn't get poured out will come out in the next coat. I watched this video mainly to see what people are spraying on their cabinets as well as if I can use my Sata automotive paint guns to spray it. You covered both of those topics for me!! I am curious what size the fluid tip is in that gun. Is it a 1.3 or is it bigger than that? Thanks again!

    • @stephenbellrichard214
      @stephenbellrichard214 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm guessing these are uppers, so you wouldn't be able to see holes up top. Then you put hooks on the bottom side of the lowers and hang them upside down to paint. At least that's how I did it to conceal the holes.

    Two questions.
    1. How much lacquer is a typical kitchen. I bought 3 gallons and I'm afraid it's not enough. How can I figure that out. It's pigmented so I can't just go grab another gallon the kitchen is about 30 doors 10 drawer fronts and face frames.
    2. How much are you thinking the lacquer? I see all kinds of information. I'm using and HVLP some say between 5 and 20 percent.
    Thanks

Dry spray is a bitch when lacquer retarder isn't used. May slightly slow down dry time, but helps eliminate over spray sediment, especially when using a lacquer thinner that is only good for cleaning your equipment when using Lenmar products.

Handy man you must mention your using non water based . When painting MDF fibres will lift. It’s always best to use oil base or cellulose shellac base before rub down has these harden the fibres. And as an experienced brush hand I know the fibres of MDF are carcinogenic. And oil paints make the dust fibres heavier to fall to floor level rather than misting the air with fine particles of dust , where has water base lift the fibres more . Has water an wood don’t mix especially on particle made wood.
Trust me sir i can get a mirror finish no brush marks with a brush. Just some will not pay the prep time

Curious of your gun settings: tip size (1.4, 1.8?), how many turns out from full closed and psi at trigger, not at the compressor. With auto paint I'm shooting it around 23-25 psi for base, more for clear. Not sure how this lacquer compares.

For the base cabinets you drill the holes on the bottom and for the wall cabinets you drill them from the top. Once the doors are installed only you and your cat will know about them.

Would your airless sprayer be enough for painting cabinets? If not, is a pancake compressor enough for getting them done? Wondering about the tool ($$) investment needed.

Once again, THANK YOU!!! Been watching your video for a LONG time and YOU have helped me quite a bit. I have a question, your door styles appear to be a Shaker style, which is what I will be doing but, my question is this, for your center panel, where do you buy the wood or materail that you are using for your center panel and is there a specific name for it? THANK YOU.!

Having experimented with spray finishing for about 3 years I discovered that you get the best finish outdoors on cement (if you have no professional booth) and wet down the floor to keep dust from floating in the air. I see that he sprays inside his garage where he also sands and works which is a dusty environment. I never got a chance to test but a great idea for indoors would be some kind of device that mists the air with water to keep dust from going into the air and ruining the finish but i guess water would be incompatible with non water based finishes.

@@broken1965 on wood you can go with Evercoat G2, sand and then automotive base coat and 2k satin clearcoat like PCL, great, hard and durable finish, I use satin but you can got semi gloss or the finish that you want plus the automot8ve colors are colormatch

I wonder why you don't install a filtered exhaust fan in the garage, such as a paint shop would have...Your the Handyman, surely not difficult to install. Great job though.

The app looks interesting. My only concern is what keeps someone from working very slowly and milking the hourly rate?( opposed to getting a set quote)

The reviews. You get bad reviews you are out. Same thing that happens with any hourly handyman with or without an app.

How good a result could you get with HVLP sprayer? I don't want to invest in compressor and gun for one use.... Thanks!

This is a great product. I’m using it for all my trim, baseboards, and window casing. The issue I’m trying to solve is when painting a large area (such as the casing on my 6’ tall windows), the overspray sticks to the areas I already painted that started to cure. As you know it only takes seconds for it to go from liquid to starting to tack up. When the overspray hits these areas this creates a very rough surface and looks terrible. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

You sanded the first coat but not the second and applied the last coat, is that correct? I'm painting my doors also.

Is satin the standard sheen when laquering kitchen cabinets? Our painters always use semigloss alkyd. Different demographic though

Not going to work very well. I have one and have used it but you have to let it fill up a lot.
