    You've inspired me to get my hands dirty again. Over 20 years ago I went from a welder/fabricator into a tool and die apprenticeship then graduated from a Mechanical Engineering University and into desk jobs. After watching tons of your videos I finally dug out the old welder I put up when the gun needed replaced. I installed a new gun and fabbed new suspension mounts for my Gwagon since no one made a bolt on 6" lift. The rear got finished yesterday and the front came out today. Tomorrow the front factory mounts are getting cut off and the new ones I fabbed will be welded on so reassembly can begin. Thanks for reminding me how good it feels to make cool shit.

    Heres a trick for ya, run the wire through an earplug. It'll clean it just the same, difference being most every one's got a box of foamies laying around.

    11:45 I'm not a welder but some of ma jerb involves some 'on site ' stick welding. I had an over achieving heath and safety clip board warrior INSIST that I wear my high vis jacket even though I was tucked in a corner far from the gaze of man or beast. As a man of principles and being too long in the tooth to put up with any of his book smarts learning , I told him to fornicate off but he was crying real tears so I capitumalated . Sure enough I went up like a roman candle and had to extricate myself from the burning mass of plastique and cotton much to the delight of some scaffolders that could see my now extremely high vis coat from clear across the site. Needless to say , I remained calm and finished the job . The heath and safety guy had gone home by the time I went to find the son of a....... report the incident so I left him a nice new desk ornament in the shape of a stinking pile of melted coat with a hand written note stating that "next time someone tells you you're wrong , Fucking listen ! "

    working for BPC (Buyers Products) that was one of my favorite joints to weld on the receiver tube/ A frames(trust me it aint just the home gamer using dissimilar material) try welding the big gaps out of position like V down instead of 1G or 2G and if welding flat or horiz. I would push the puddle not pull. Another cheep trick to show the youngsters is to use discarded MIG nozzles on the root pass of gaps you can get behind. You could weld gaps 3cm wide using a piece of copper as a backing strip. Ey I love this show BTW I'm a long time listener, first time calling in tho. You got a fine production going on. Cant wait till next season when somebody donates ya a miller 350p so ya can show us all the pulse width modulation wave forms on the oscilloscope. The kids love that stuff.
    Ey, why do the ladies love gettin' with welders? 100% penetration all right all right. Keep your head out of the plume.

    • @BType13X2
      @BType13X2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I work in a maintenance and repair shop in the mining industry, I wish the biggest gap I needed to fill was 3cm, it is always worse than that. There are many different non-permanent backing strip materials you can use, I personally like Brass even over the manufactured Ceramic backing strips, gouging rods will also work for smaller gaps.
      I'd love to see him get his hands on an STT machine so he can scope what the machine does, or a Powerwave. They adjust voltage and WFS so you can set your machine and weld all positions, which is awesome if your ever in a confined space and can't climb in an out adjusting things for various positions.

      Another thing that helps with the gaps/dissimilar thickness metal is to point the gun at the thicker piece or at the piece that does not have an exposed edge, they tend to burn away much easier.

      All this welding talk makes me think of when I used to weld for Union Tank Car. We had to pass 6 different welding tests, some flux core and some stainless steel. One of the weld positions was a 6G position (I'm stressed just thinking about it). Then they would cut sections out of your 4F and 2G welds to bend and x-ray your welds before you're officially hired. Friggin stressful. The 6G was x-rayed and bent to failure. Damn that job paid well though.

    I've watched this video, and the one that was made right before this video, probably 10 times each.
    I've been teaching myself how to weld. You throw out a bunch of great welding advice throughout, so I just wanted to thank you. You pretty much inspired me to get away from wood, to metal.
    I think the best advice is that ppl should learn stick welding, before mig, so you really learn what the hell is going on.

    I'm 37. I grew up with a father who taught me lots of cool, interesting and crazy things like our shop boss here does daily. Sadly, it wasn't consistent nor was the man himself. As a kid and as a younger man I craved knowledge from Men like the boss here and old timers from the greatest generation. WWII vets teaching me how to weld, run a lathe and make cool things after finishing work. I have 2 boys and a girl that I find myself teaching them the things I've always sought out. The world needs more Men like Dr. Ave here. Cheers, Mickey

    I'll wholeheartedly second the advice to keep your face away from the zip disc, or better yet wear a full face shield. One blew up in my face in January from 2 feet away cutting an exhaust pipe under a car where I didn't have a lot of room to get out of the danger zone, safety glasses saved my eyes from shrapnel but a good size chunk hit my cheek with about the force of a baseball bat and I wound up with a 2 inch gash right over my cheekbone. Have a wicked scar to remind me that my toys ain't Tonka trucks anymore, but hey chicks dig scars right?

    Bought my self a stick having seen your ‘buy a stick and learn to weld on a curve’ previous vajao. Tacking with 7018 is hard. Been cheating. Tacking with the gasless MIG. Running beads with 7018. Getting the arc to strike over and over with those 7018’s man...

      Grab some 6010 and tack with them. 1/8 at about 115 amp works good. Then you don't have to worry about switching amperage all the time, just swap rods.
      Slagle comes off easy, tips don't Slag over, just an all round easier life.

    • @dougsaunders8109
      @dougsaunders8109 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Birddy Birddy I will give 6010 a crack. I have 6013, I was amazed the difference in how arc strike between the two. 6013 easy, 7018 not so much. Good tip about the slag as well

      I love welding with 7018! Lincoln Excalibur 7018 is excellent stuff! Restrikes with it can be a pain tho. The flux undercuts and will skin over the metal tip of the rod. Keep an old file handy and just take a quick swipe across the end of the rod when you go to start welding again. Easy peasy!

    • @dougsaunders8109
      @dougsaunders8109 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Acuff I am getting better, need to practice more. I am based in UK and have some reputable brand European 7018. I like the idea of using a file, which I have seen people using, to get rid of slag. I have taken to a little tappy tap tap on the anvil which seems to do the trick. I am getting there....

    I work at a facility making the welding wires, the shmoo on the wire is deliberate, this is drawing soap that helps to form the wire through a drawing die and it left a fine layer on the wire to help it slide inside the torch lead, letting the wire go through it smoothly and preventing mechanical stress on the feed system. most manufacturers don't care about the quantity of shmoo left on the wire, but we do, just enough to get the perfect slide but not too much to prevent clogging. it's usually molybdenum disulfide or a teflon-based soap.

    Two things about a grinder.
    1. if it explodes chances are it will take your wrist with it, so unless you don't care, either use the shield or really, whatever else you do is pointless, because there's chance you'll bleed to death like a 2000s emo trend.
    2. if you try to be safe, use the shield, if you try to be safe and don't use the shield, refer to no 1.
    And people might say, come on, how bad can it be...well, it kinda looks like someone took the smudge tool in photoshop and moved it around on your hand. Saw it once, i am now a shielded convert. I've done some big shits in my life, but i don't want that bad juju.

    • @pcubiotti

      Wrong about the cut off wheel. Most are made to break away in a “safer manner”, instead of just exploding like the older ones

    • @fabronfretwell3257
      @fabronfretwell3257 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had cut off discs explode on me probably a dozen or so times in 25yrs. If you wear leather gloves and keep your head axially aligned the pieces just fly off and bounce off relatively harmlessly your arms and legs(that is, as long as your not wearing short sleeves and jogging shorts.)However, I have witnessed several coworkers get injured mainly cause they let go of the grinder as it caught and take off cutting effortlessly whatever body part it comes in contact with. I find it better to risk breaking a disk with a death grip than to have it fly out of my hands like a chicken with its head cut off.
