11:13 While none of them entered the RRA (a strictly cautionable offence), having four ATX players hounding the referee during the OFR preceding the referee keeping his original decision (that PRO is now publicly conceding should have been altered) is a really bad look. Surely there needs to be a caution here.

All I really want is some sort of rule to make it more immediately apparent a goal may be under review and/or VAR to be faster. I can’t celebrate goals as much anymore knowing that every one might get called back after a couple mins of checking/review.

The Vancouver penalty didn't seem to get a fair review. The CR was clearly distracted by the players right behind him. He should have issued a couple yellows and then given it the consideration it deserved.

Why don’t they show the ref a zoomed in view of plays???? Like how PRO gives a zoomed in explanation of the foul???? That last clip was an obvious foul but had they shown the ref a zoomed in loop, he would’ve been “convinced” as he said to the VAR officials.

While these videos show how hard the VAR officials work to get things right, the next step has to be serious sanctions on players attempting to influence the official in a situation where a VAR review is likely. Referees need to be able to say "that's enough, I'm going to the screen now, any more backtalk is an automatic yellow" and follow it up with a card for EVERY offense from that point on. There is just no excuse for the antics of the Austin players here even with both assistant referees trying to keep them away. It's shocking that the league has not given any supplemental discipline for this outrageous incident. The assistant referees should have informed the players "enough, we're taking numbers and recommending cards from here on in, disperse now." It's clear that there is a lot going on in the VAR booth and no referee needs more going on behind him as he checks the video.
I do think the constant complaint from people that "something can't be clear and obvious if it takes five minutes" is shown to be flawed by these videos: clearly it often takes several minutes to see all the angles and figure out what to present to the referee onscreen. But during that time, we need a lot less arguing from the players. VAR is going to catch most infractions missed and the small percentage that VAR cannot catch already have been called on the field. Pre-arguing with the official before he goes to the screen should not be happening, or perhaps should be limited to the captain only and even then only up to a certain point.

The handball in Vancouver was not obvious. Watch the eyes of the defenders following the ball. Watch how the defenders didn't see a handball. It was an optical illusion from the camera angles. The ball appeared to be always heading to the defender's leg. Fafa jerked his hand out of the way, making it look like possible contact. It was a maybe; not enough to overturn the call on the field. The referee took the advice of review without sufficient evidence on contact, but on the 2nd review he didn't give enough time to consider, he just went with his gut or bias. He totally gaslit the reviews, "he wasn't ready to shoot." Vancouver deserved better.

Watching again, freeze it at 8:45 and notice the ball hit the defender's right hip/thigh and then come across to his left leg. At the moment it hits the right hip, Fafa's hand is behind beside the defender. It doesn't change direction until it hits the hip. It's possible it grazed his hand while it contacted the hip, but a back-moving hand wouldn't have knocked the ball 90 degrees to the side. It wouldn't have even stopped the ball fully, it would have continued and fallen.

Also, at 8:51 you can see the ball didn't redirect when the video ref said it did in the other angle. It didn't move that 90 degrees when Fafa's hand was about the same position as the defender's right hip. The ball seems to be covered in white at that moment, blinded by the hip in that split second. A loose drawn-back hand or a hip, which do you think would turn the ball that hard into the left thigh?
Vancouver is responsible for how they react and should have kept their spirits up but it really messed with Fafa's head and killed the team's hot streak. I was able to slow it down enough on TH-cam to see it was just an illusion. This game should be used as a training exercise for other refs.

This series covers actual reviews where the referee is sent to the monitor. It does not cover scenarios where the referee is not sent to the monitor.
