Another example of a breed of dog needing to be mixed with other breeds to counter out these issues slowly while keeping as many visible traits as possible.
As I'm learning about dog breeds I'm starting to wonder what breeds can be considered 'healthy'? German shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, bull terriers are prone to dental problems, great Danes have a reduced life span because of their size causing bone and heart problems and so on. (Still people shit on me for only adopting animals even tho their breeds are unknown, because 'i don't know their family tree')
@@CocoaPuffss for those people, it's easier to train them. Some just want to use them as show animals. I honestly don't mind mixed cats and dogs. Because they are just as cute, quirky, adorable, annoying and a handful as much as a pure-breed.
@@CocoaPuffss Basically the ones that formed over time rather than through concentrated breeding. I think the Xoloitzcuintli is fairly healthy for instance.
I don't agree sorry by cross breeding you do get rid of some health problems connected to a pure breed dog but you risk elevating the chance of some health problems if both breeds are prone to it and possibly introducing some completely new health problems along the way I own this breed and will never have another Breed And whilst cross breeding will and does have benefits there are down falls as well... no dog is perfectly healthy we just have to try to breed the right way and manage the problems that arise with any breed of dog
@@CocoaPuffssI volunteer at a shelter and we get pure breds all the time. A lot of the times it’s from people that got them from a breed we but then didn’t want them anymore. One time this family put a great white pyrenees in a shelter. They got it her as a puppy. They put her in the shelter bc they didn’t know she was going to get so big. Some people are truly idiots and just buy an animal on impulse knowing nothing and then get annoyed with them when they don’t fit their perfect cookie cutter ideal. My Cavvies lived healthy lives of 14.5 and 16 years respectively. Do not choose backyard breeders and you will get healthy dogs. They are absolutely the best small dogs - intelligent, friendly, non-barky.
My Cav is going on 13, she is totally deaf, has heart failure, and is getting cataracts. It breaks my heart to bits knowing her time is coming so quickly. They truly are my favorite breed of dog, despite the health concerns. :(
Same, mine has to have her eyes and ears cleaned multiple times daily now and she has a bad heart murmur. Our other two didn’t make it this far so I’ll take whatever time I have left with her ❤
@@ARKSYN sadly this last August we lost looloo to heart failure. She lived an amazing long life and I know she’s in pup heaven eating her bones and running in deep snow ❤️
I had a friend in middle school whose parents had waaayyyy to many pets. She gave me their Cavalier leaving out the fact that he was severely overweight and refused to walk up stairs. Which caused me and my siblings to have to carry him up the first couple times. Over time, he lost sooo much weight, became the most active dog ever and they didn’t even recognize him when I sent her the videos! My baby ran up and down those stairs like he never struggled before. Oh how I miss my King Sullivan. So so so very much. We miss you Sully 🤍🥺🐶
I'm surprised you didn't mention how incredibly prone they are to heart disease, especially dilated cardiomyopathy. That was one of the most common things I saw working in vet med with Cavvies. If you want a Cavvy, get to be good friends with a veterinary cardiologist!
This seems like another case of go to a high rated registered breeder I.e they breed show dogs. A lot of these traits can be genetically tested for and so going to a breeder that cares about pedigree will help mitigate these risks. This is especially true for any dogs at increased risk of heat disease and while way more expensive is worth it especially in the long term. And even if it can’t be tested for high pedigree breeders won’t breed dogs that have health issues
They missed a hell of a lot they have only listed the health problems that will cause the most shock to people watching the video... which is not right If they are doing a breed profile on a Breed they should list pros and cons as well as listing all health issues..
My two Cavaliers died from cardiomyopathy, because their hearts were enlarged, and the heart muscles were weaker than normal heart muscles. It was so painful having to watch them suffer and die because of it!
I had a dog just like that Basically that exact dog It passed away last week It had a heart disease And the cause of her death was a heart attack I miss her So much
My bf’s mom’s cavalier had this. Poor Willie had seizures and strokes constantly. He’d sit on his bed and just whine and cry constantly. He couldn’t even stand up to relieve himself. She REFUSED to put him down. (She did the same damn thing with her cat who was a skeleton by the end. She’d get mad at him for trying to sit in her lap because he was dirty from not being able to clean himself)
She could have gotten an operation for the dog. But, it is VERY expensive. I'm glad that I was in a position that I could pay for my dog to have the operation.
Even if they were the most ugly dogs, I would still love them the most. I just like their personalities. I’ve never seen any aggressive cavaliers. I wish there is a way to make them healthier 😢
I've had 10+ Cavaliers. Syringomyelia has never been an issue. I didn’t even know it was considered a main health concern. What I've heard is that the main health concern is congestive heart failure. One of my Cavaliers has it. She's 12.5 years old and has been doing fairly well since I started her on medication. She occasionally has some rough days, but not severe. If she begins struggling a lot and there's nothing else I can do, then I'll have to make that tough decision. Right now, her life is still valuable. I can tell when a dog is fading away, and she's not at that point yet. She's still acting like herself and is happy.
Ah miniruby trolling comments. Nothing in this world is 100% but that's no reason not to get them back to 90%+ by sacrificing the purebred suffering you desire to propagate.
I definitely disagree. Breeds that have led to such pathological consequences with no advantage to the dog or its owner shouldn't be allowed anymore. They lead only to misery and guge vet bills.

I'm getting one soon, but from a registered, responsible breeder. The main reason these dogs have major health problems is bad breeding practices. Any breed that people think is cute is probably going to fall victim to this, because people who just want to make a quick buck will breed them like crazy until there are serious problems. Inbreeding is also an issue with these dogs. At this point, it's probably virtually impossible to have a 100% healthy Cav for their entire life, but there are things you can do to prolong their lives and make them as healthy as possible. I'm disabled and have chronic pain. Some people think I don't deserve a decent life.

I wanted one but during my research I learned of all the genetic pitfalls this breed has and I couldn't do it. Any breeder who is NOT using the breeding programs set up for this breed to counter this stuff is a monster and deserves jail time and to be stripped of any license they’ve got. It shouldn't be an optional program it should be REQUIRED and I don't care if you disagree deliberately breeding this dog outside of those programs that are made literally to only give them a chance of living a full healthy lifestyle when you know all of the horrific genetic illnesses that they are GOING to get, there's practically no chance they wont, makes you a horrible human not worthy of owning a dog. Who cares if they look slightly different. at least they’re not gonna KO from a heart condition at 5
Pedigree dogs are basically tortured, for people's entertainment. Mongrels all the way, it's insane to breed problems into healthy animals for aesthetics.
Most of these health issues are due to in breeding... but if you are going to do a breed profile list ALL health problems... I've had several of these dogs and have had none of these issues... However my current youngest has a luxating patella which she will need surgery to fix. No breeder can guarantee a 100% healthy dog. And like this breed EVERY breed had health issues
Bad breeding, bad paring, trying to make these dogs littler and littler. It’s great for likes and views but terrible for the animal. But as long as humans think they are being kind and filling their own wants this will continue to happen, like the pug.

For these reasons it is illegal to breed these dogs in Norway.. poor dogs, they never asked to be born like this 😥
And heart issues, mitral valve disease.

Is this due to inbreeding?
It’s the effect of selective breeding not inbreeding.

Who cares if they look slightly different. at least they’re not gonna KO from a heart condition at 5
unhappy thanksgiving y'all pleas have a nice healthy day 🥲
Pedigree dogs are basically tortured, for people's entertainment.
Mongrels all the way, it's insane to breed problems into healthy animals for aesthetics.
Nooooooo :(
This is nightmare fuel
The Heartbreaking Truth about Cavaliers? I can only fit so many in my car and house!!
Maybe we shouldn’t breed these anymore.
and heart issues
Most of these health issues are due to in breeding... but if you are going to do a breed profile list ALL health problems...
I've had several of these dogs and have had none of these issues...
However my current youngest has a luxating patella which she will need surgery to fix.
No breeder can guarantee a 100% healthy dog.
And like this breed EVERY breed had health issues
Stop buying pure braids people, it's not good for the dog
Actually the cocker spaniel is the most unhealthy
Bad breeding, bad paring, trying to make these dogs littler and littler. It’s great for likes and views but terrible for the animal. But as long as humans think they are being kind and filling their own wants this will continue to happen, like the pug.
Rescue dont buy
And heart disease
Why did you not change the music when you are talking about a heartbreaking dog😢
That looks like lady from lady and the tramp
Is the brain being to big is why that dog eyes bout to pop out his head
Don't buy designer dogs. They are over bred for profit, not the dog's health.
better off as food for eagles
