READ ME BEFORE COMMENTING hey everyone, I’m adding this right here for people who keep asking about the longer videos. I decided I’m gonna just make longer videos when I feel the topic warrants it. Don’t wanna force anything for the sake of video length.
WHERE HAS YOUR CHANNEL BEEN?! AHHH SO HAPPY I AM HERE.... I know these people in my life too. My mom is Lorelai Gilmore. Lane is one of my favorite characters and I agree she is so underrated
Like they didn’t give us a good wedding for Luke and Lorelai, Rory didn’t get a good ending, and Lane! At least give us a good ending with Lanes character!!
"Rory is Christopher" is a genius observation. However, it was so jarring to see in the revival. The girl who had to have specific color highlighters and did all her reading in advance was also the girl who wasn't prepared to talk about ideas at a job interview and couldn't remember her own boyfriend? Oy with the poodles!
Ahhhhh u said the thing (idk why that made me excited lmao) & exactly! This is why everyone is thrown off guard by her sudden character change I think the writers wanted to shock us but like the hamster in that Drake & Josh episode we were stunned and not in the good way
But the reason Rory was so unstable in AYITL is because 1. Her whole life she based her worth on her grades in school and how good a student she was, and 2. Her life plans no longer served her because of how rigid they were, she failed to foresee (like everyone alive) that she herself would change through the years and didn’t have the flexibility to say, “maybe journalism isn’t it anymore, let me see where I can keep writing for a living”. In my opinion Christopher is just selfish, which is a trait that Rory shares, and perhaps that is what makes them similar, but Rory was always more responsible than Chris. I always thought Rory was more like a young Emily that was willing to sacrifice many things for comfort and the “finer things in life” but ultimately figured out that this sort of hollow, banal life is not enough for her (much like Emily did in AYITL when she had to figure out who she was now that she wasn’t serving the role of wife any longer).
@@michellecollinsgalaviz2126 "Rory was more like a young Emily " yea yea exactly, I also agree. I think Rory was somehow ready to be "the wife" of Logan, I think she would've liked that life. But because she is the daughter of Lorelei who despises that life (and also the disapproval of Logan's family of her), it in a way pushed her away from it, she didn't want to be "that woman" in her mother's eyes. So instead, she ended up "lost", neither here nor there.
There's an episode called "will you be my Lorelai Gilmore ?", where Lane tells Rory how important Lorelai has been for her growing up, and she asks Rory to be her babies' godmother, in the hope that they too will have their own Lorelai Gilmore to rely on growing up. So yeah, you're on to something here.
I was hoping Emily's sister 'Sweety' was going to make an appearance. It was disappointing we didn't get to see a side of Emily who had history with a person, but one she was comfortable and happy with ☹
I sustain that Lane and Paris were the best characters. Maybe it’s because I’m biased since Lane is extremely similar to my best friend and I see a lot of myself in Paris. Or maybe it’s because they were offered complexity and depth and were allowed to be flawed, whereas it seems like they tried too hard to make Rory “perfect.”
id like to point out that just like christopher to lorelai, rory was sometimes very absent in lane's life, chris was avoiding lorelai and rory was too self-centered to focus or even listen about lane's problems
Yeah! Both Lorelai and Lane had to deal with a lot of real shit as a result of decisions that they made. They didn't have an easy way out, so they were forced to grow up fast. However, both Christopher and Rory were protected from facing the real consequences of their actions and end up very self-centered. We see from Christopher that it's still possible to have that growth later in life. I can only hope that Rory gets there eventually.
It's always struck me how the Asian best friend/sidekick in TV shows and movies is almost always more interesting or likeable than their best friend, and should really be the main character, Lane included. This opinion was further solidified after reading an article called "The Rise Of The Asian Best Friend (And Why It's Not The Representation You Think)", which is long, but definitely worth the read. It just sucks that they never seem to get a satisfying ending no matter which character it is, not even today
If you know the Myers Briggs, I think Rory is ISxJ. Meaning she is good with accumulating facts, but isn’t good with out of the box ideas or processing those facts into something new. Logan’s father may have called it right. She wasn’t right for investigative journalism. She could write a book about her life with her mother because it was relaying info about something that she had experienced. Without someone directing her, she was indecisive.
Absolutely. Have you seen Perfect Score? The Asian guy stole that movie. Sorry, I wouldn’t call him the Asian guy, but I can’t remember the character or actor’s name. That in the end he was a flighty genius? LOVE IT.
i think the people who claim that the characters in gilmore girls "aren't real" are probably not in any sort of community because i know so many people in my city (hell, even my neighborhood) who are carbon copies of each character.
I've never met a single character who in any way resembles any of the main characters. They're all caricatures. From my perspective, it's a type of fantasy, that if such a place existed, this is the type of people who could populate it and this is what could happen to them.
Lane's dad's brief and insignificant appearance was a joke--an intended joke. He was spoken of in the show like he was around, but we never saw him. So it was kind of like a "he DOES exist!" moment. Giving him more airtime than that wouldn't have made sense for the joke nor the fact that they felt his presence wasn't important for the entirety of the original show.
@@somethingbambi875 I just pulled this from a wiki fandom, since I couldn't remember the exact mentions. There might be more: "Mr. Kim, is never seen in the original series. Lane does, however, specifically refer to her father when her parents plan to send her to Korea indefinitely in season 2, and Mrs. Kim mentions him briefly when reminiscing about her wedding night in season 6."
yeah i've always thought it was crazy, in the first season lane mentions her "parents" but you literally never see her father, even after lane moves out and sneaks into her mom's bedroom, her dad is not there in the bed.
I always thought he was just dead or something but thought it was weird they never ever mention him. So it was very very strange he suddenly appears, they shouldn't have done that. For someone who just had my mother, it was relateble. Same with Christopher when I realized they had a connection, it is fine, but why can't it be like I had it, just my mom, and a father living nearby but we almost never met and were like strangers, it happens. Now we know each other though.
Lane is hands down the best character of the show (apart for Loelai). She carries the show in her showlders since Rory fall of grace (since Yale). They did her dirty with the final and the revival. And making her end up with Zac, what a dense guy. Also Emily has a narcissistic personality, Miss Kim is just conservative. Wow, Rory IS Christopher, I never though that. I really like your takes (also agree, Logan is the wors with Rory, he brings the worst of her), the deep dive. Everytime I rewatch it with my mom we rant for ever about these things
I agree, only that a liked that Zac ended up with Lane, but they should have put more about her in the revival. And I hate Logan, he is the worst. Rory would have been better off with Jess, Martin, or the professor she blushed for.
@@carolina482 But Dave Ragalsky, he was the man made of dreams, soooo perfect for Lane. I ended up kinda hate loving Zac, but he was not Lane's end game. Jess was the only one who made Rory grow and question herself, and the only of her romantic partners that grow and mature. He really knows her, not the Rory she shows (Logan knows that) but the deep parts. He loves Rory, not the idea of Rory
i feel like another parallel for Lorelai’s backstory (in her teen years) is actually Jess Mariano. he was kind of a screw up in his teenage years, like Lorelai. then Jess went off on his own to California, like Lorelai running off to Stars Hollow with Rory. then, over the years, they’ve grown and matured into adults who seem to have it all figured out, but there’s always the one that got away (Rory/Christopher). it also helps to explain why Lorelai hated Jess when they first met; Lorelai used to be Jess when she was a teenager, and she didn’t want someone like that bringing Rory down. there’s a video on youtube, i forget which one exactly, but it highlights more of the parallels between Jess and Lorelai and i love their parallels.
I like the observation that Lane's upbringing is a precursor/ near mirror to Loreli's because it makes both Lane and Lorelei more relatable. when lorelai and other characters talk about lorelai as a teenager they talk about her as being a total wild child. when we look at lane's, who is much more reserved, upbringing, we realize that the observation of her being out of control is just a continued projection of her parent onto her and others, because the parent's control makes it so the kids can't actually "rebel" in a really significant way, just in their forms of expression/doing things (often considered unacceptable or taboo by the parents), just like Emily and Lorelei. Lane is a polite, well behaved, often scared kid who just has interests and dreams. It makes me wonder about Lorelai's upbringing and if she was more like Lane in that way. Maybe she was truly "wild and uncontrollable," or maybe she has just claimed that narrative as her parents and peers pushed that belief onto her.
I think it’s the second thing. I don’t think Lorelai was just out of control maybe just a slightly more hyper version bc she’d be a teenager. I think in the eyes of her parents she was doing things normal teenagers do but it wasn’t normal to them. From their perspective it probably WAS wild and crazy bc they’d never been exposed to individualistic behavior like the kind that Lorelai shows. Anything new and different to some people is always gonna seem scary. People generally don’t like changes
I agree that Lane and Lorelai are very similar. The idea that Rory is Christopher makes SO MUCH SENSE! That explains so much. I'm interested to hear your other opinions. 🙂
I think it’s interesting that the show always comes back to try and explain, you can never fully run away from your family or your past. Hence Lane working with her mom again after so much push back. Lorelei attempted a relationship with her parents for her daughter. Rory following habits that were displayed in both her parents. Shows like Gilmore girls and one tree hill always prove to me how you treat kids matters, even well into adult hood and shapes a lot of who you are. It’s very much so nature thru nurture. Lane was around a mother like Lorelei who showed her that fun side but inevitably the biological side of things (her mom’s disapproval) shows a different side of things that she falls back on. We want the approval of our parents. We want to be loved. And how we grow up effects all of that.
Your Christopher theory has blown my mind!!! Ah! As for video length, I’d say that you should make your videos long enough to explain your ideas on whatever topic that you choose and not be too concerned with the length. Then again, what do I know? You did a great job with this and I’m going to be thinking about it.
As a 56 year old father who watched the original series every week with my daughter, and I have shared the series with so many people. Thank you for doing this and I will subscribe. 😎
Lane is actually inspired by Helen Pai, who is Amy Sherman-Palladino's long-time friend and I /think/ was also her editor when the show was first conceived. Helen Pai from what I know is also Korean, and she was the main consultant behind the scenes where Mrs Kim and Lane spoke Korean from what I remember, since the actress who plays Mrs Kim isn't Korean. And fun fact: Dave on the show is also inspired by Helen's real-life husband who is also named Dave and whose last name is almost identical to show-Dave's last name as well. Lane's band is even inspired by Helen Pai's name I think: Helen Pai -> Hemp Alien. And yeah from what I know aside from Helen Pai, I don't think that anyone else was consulted about how Lane and her family are written on the show, but I also don't think that there were even that many other writers on Gilmore Girls aside from Amy and Daniel Palladino until they both didn't renew their contract with the WB and a new showrunner and new writers were brought in. Often times the show itself suffers from a lack of other writers or input which I feel like you can definitely notice in how AYITL was made, especially in some of the very tone-deaf jokes made in it. And random sidenote but while Lane's ending storyline in season 7 is badly put together, from what I've come to understand, this was not the idea that Amy originally had for her. Though Lane's season 6 ending wasn't as promising either, and Zach as a boyfriend for her felt more random overall and just her needing to be put with another guy that her mother doesn't initially approve of rather than having someone who was at least more deserving of her as Dave was! And lastly, I get what you mean about Rory representing Christopher through her life in the revival but I also /kind/ of think that her life isn't technically going to end up like his because of her pregnancy reveal by the end. Christopher did wander and hop around jobs and was just very aimless and overall fine with it, but Rory in the revival obviously struggles with the hopping around and though she also just seems to lack the drive to get a stable job for herself, still goes back to the place that is "always there for her", aka her mom and Stars Hollow. And while I really hate the trope of a female character becoming a mother in order to "find her purpose in life", I feel like that's what the whole thing with the full-circle storyline and her getting pregnant at the end is supposed to be. So technically at first glance she does resemble Christopher, but if she keeps her kid, she most likely won't have the long-term freedom that Christopher had even as he got older. Because yeah, Christopher ended up also having another kid with Sherry but he also didn't exactly do much in raising her...
I donno about not being able to wander as long as Christopher… Revival Rory is Christopher’s age in season 1. Yeah he might have a couple more wandering years on her before becoming Gigi’s full time dad but hardly enough to say their characters are different especially since we haven’t gotten to see what kind of parent Rory would be. Personally I suspect that Rory’s baby would be Lorelai and Luke’s responsibility in a big way quite often.
@@lauravsthepage that's not what's implied through her conversation with Christopher in the revival though. Yes, she did wander, but in comparison to Christopher even in season 1, she wasn't fine with it and it was obvious that she was suffering through burnout rather than wanting to wander around the world. The fact that she's even hinted at keeping the baby is significant because it wasn't Christopher's direct choice for either Rory or Gigi to be born, it was their respective mothers'. If the show wanted to imply that Rory's kid will be Lorelai and Luke's responsibility, there likely never would've been a conversation with Rory and Christopher where it's implied that she'll take responsibility in raising her kid just like her mom did.
@@lauravsthepage no it would be Rory responsibility. I hope they make another season and Rory is a good mom to shut up all the Rory haters. And I think Logan is like Chris he won't be involved on the baby life.
Lane was one of my favorite characters too and felt upset that she was stuck with the other guy from her band and that they band wasn't as successful as they wanted it to be, but i was also happy to see that she was happy and a kick ass mom like Lorieli
your point about rory being christopher BLEW MY MIND!! it makes her behaviour in later seasons make so much more sense like they kind of had similar stories in terms of living quite a sheltered life where nothing really went wrong for them and then suddenly something throws them off the rails and they kind of float about for twenty years lol
I completely agree the show is realistic camp The character interactions are real for the most part but the circumstances are camp A single mother and her daughter: VERY real Stars Hallow a very campy small (almost cult like town) The citizens behave like real people with the occasional campy eccentricity
i disagree that mrs kim listens to lane and takes what she has to say into account. she says several times that parents can’t trust their children and that they have to do what is right regardless of how their children feel. but the key difference between emily and mrs kim is that mrs kim grew up in the same household as lane with a mother that didn’t understand her religion or understand her. she also can be swayed by logic or dedication like with dave and zach. so she was able to save her relationship with lane. emily grew up in a world where children listen to their parents and it worked out for her. she also has that “my way or the highway” attitude regardless of the situation.
Tbh i 100% agree that with children and teens especially, parents need to be protective and make decisions based on their adult experiences. Especially those of minorities,. The US does not care much for non-white immigrants, doesn’t matter whether they go missing or is dead. It’s the hard truth. Mrs. Kim did what she had to do in a foreign land
i always thought this! great emily vs kim analysis. i like emily’s character but im so tired of people calling her “an icon that just tried her best and loved her daughter”. finally someone who sees it as i do.
yes I want longer videos; and you mentioned Cristopher, could you do a video about him-the downfall of Christopher or something. He was a mediocre father who never really showed he cared.
listening to yu and studying alone is the best , i am too shy to talk about gilmore girls to my other friends because they said the show is too common (but they dont now that i am secretely watching it ) i am glad i hop into ur channel
I completely agree! I’ve said for years that Lorelai and Lane are parallels just as much as Lane/Mrs Kim is a foil for Rory/Lorelai. And the difference between their situations is that Lorelai rebelled openly from the beginning and Emily refused to bend in any way for years. Whereas Lane cowed under the scrutiny of her mother and didn’t have the courage to stand up to her until she was much older. But when she finally did, Mrs. Kim found a way to adapt to the new dynamic and its boundaries!! That is a healthy relationship!
It's like you were reading my mind. Also, you gave me some different perspective on some characters and it totally makes sense to me. I can't agree more!!!
These people definitely exist. They just don’t exist all at once. These are people you met throughout the years, at different homes and jobs all living in the same neighborhood.
Ughhhh this just reminds me of a argument I had on tik tok about how apparently Lorelai is a very toxic mother and she did Rory so wrong, and it just made me so mad. SO hearing someone say she was a good mother and broke the cycle makes my heart happy. Yeah she made mistakes but she was far from toxic. The only characters that I could remotely see that title for are possibly Emily and Richard's grandma, and sometimes Jess. But they all pointed out the fact of Rory running to Emily when she stole the boat. Like first of all neither one of those things really had anything to do with Lorelai's parenting. It was Logan's influence (and they all argued it was Rory's idea, but who took her there, who put ideas like that in her head, her actually let her go through with it, who had the experience of doing similar things, Logan did) and Rory was scared and she knew her grandma would do anything for her. She thought that was the best option for her at the time. She was a great mother based on what she made for herself and how well she took care of Rory. And just because her and Rory was close doesn't mean she treated her like a friend. What people don't understand is Rory never did anything enough that needed "mama bear" so yeah as an outsider it probably seems way too friendly. But Lorelai showed disappointment in Rory and disciplined her when needed, she was just a great kid you know. sorry for the rant.
No you’re fine, I plan on making an entire video discussing Lorelai’s parenting bc this is something I hear often and I can’t wait bc I have so many examples and evidence that’ll hopefully put this debate to rest.
You're so right! It's incredibly challenging to be a parent to an anxious but self-disciplined kid. Lorelai rarely had the opportunity to take off the "friend" hat and put on her "parent" one, because Rory chose to stay within all of the boundaries most parents have to enforce. When people say that L was too much of a friend to R, I'm always like "Where are all these instances of times L failed to guide or discipline her?" Making a couple of mistakes just isn't the same as being a bad parent.
We actually DO have some insight into how Emily was raised by her mother. In the spa episode she says something basically like "mothers arent supposed to be friends with their daughters, they are supposed to be rolemodels, thats how I was raised". I may not have worded it right, but that leads me believe Emily's mother was a perfectionist who wanted/expected Emily to be the same. I'm assuming she, like Richard, came from some money (maybe not as much or as old money which could be a reason Trix hated her) and was therefore raised to be a housewife in a wealthy household. This seems to be what she was expected to do to, she even says got a degree but was only ever in college to find a husband basically. This was likely at her own mother's influence
So here's what I think about how Lane turned out. I think her and Zach are running the secret bar in Stars Hallow. Think about it. She can do the mom thing and still be her rockin' self playing music and still hiding and revelling like her character always did. It fits perfectly!
So spot on!!! I remember one time someone said that Lorelai didn't like Jess because it reminded her about herself at that age and i was like maybe??? but the person that really resonates with her is Lane literally and you can see that Lorelai and her house make her feel save and she comfortable enough to go crying to her house and staying even when Rory isn't there and talk to her. As someone who has a mother like Mrs. Kim she resonates with me a lot.
Yooooooooooou just made my brain ping. WOW. I never realized that Rory was floating around like her Dad!!! That makes so much sense. Also it took another insightful GG fan like you to make me realize that of course Rory was always gonna end up just like her Mom the upside is she’ll raise her baby with loving grandparents in Lorelai and Luke. Thank you for your videos!
I think Emily wanted Loreli to be a carbon copy of herself. I think she did lighten up somewhat over the years, although she never could accept or understand Loreli's free spirit.
and, as much as she loved Rory, of course, I don't think she ever forgave Lorelei for getting pregnant so young, or, at least, for not marrying Christopher right then, and then that she took Rory & left
Hello! I’m new, thank you for making these! I’m always telling my daughter how much I feel like they totally low balled Lane. She was incredibly smart, creative, caring, thoughtful, her future should’ve been so much more. Dave was the one her story should’ve ended with, NOT Zack. And yea that happens in real life, but her character really deserved so much more than that. And to your point they could’ve had Lane move away, go to school for music, or whatever and then come back to Stars Hollow, open a recording studio, with Dave…or something like that.
This is the first time I've heard this theory and WOW! My mind is blown. It is spot on. They are both so hardworking too. & Rory IS Christopher as an adult. It's funny how she became the parent that did not raise her. Maybe she emulated him as a way of keeping his presence in her life.
I love Gilmore girls because they have moments of fun but they also know how to be real and raw and make people think, I don't think this show could be just one it wouldn't work
Love this analysis! My dream for Lane was that she would teach music at the high school and be the next generation version of a Ms. Patty-esque character for the town. I didn't ship them, but thought it would've been cute if she ended up with Brian and he was the one who took over the antique store. Or at least he could have managed the music store.
loved the parallels you drew between characters in this video! haven't seen any other commentaries on GG that think about the show in this way. Subscribed and will be watching all your other GG commentaries!
This was fun!! Can't believe I never made that connection between Lane and Lorelai!! Makes total sense, the way Lorelai covers for Lane and wants to foster her rebellion and independence. Makes me want to watch again from the beginning with fresh eyes! 🤔😲👍😁
I feel like this miiiiight have occurred to me as I watched it for the first time like, seven years ago, but if it did, I’ve totally forgotten. Anyway love hearing your perspective on this! It makes a lot of sense that Lorelei and Lane would have a special bond, given their similar upbringings. And Lorelei would know better than most how important it is to give a teenager a space to just be themself. It’s really beautiful that she gave that to Lane. As for video length, I think it depends on the video subject! I personally prefer slightly longer videos, but I think you can feel when a creator feels pressured to make videos long just for the sake of them being long. This felt like the perfect length to discuss this topic! So honestly, just make them as long or as short you feel you need to unpack something you find interesting!
I think the comparison is spot-on! The only depressing thing about that comparison though, in light of the revival is, it almost feels like if you've repaired your relationship with your mother and have a loving and supportive partner, the same sparky, animated person loses their drive to excel and succeed in other parts of their life. I mean, that's the difference between Lorelai and Lane isn't it? Lorelai had to do many things on her own and that gave her not just the independence, but the push to excel. And if the revival is canon, Lane settled into a more mundane life since she had all the support. Oh well, that decision is not the end of the world and she chose contentment over excitement which many people today are figuring out is what they want, so it's not all bad. Also, another commenter made a comment about Rory being like Emily and I agree. I agree with this video that she is part Christopher, but also that she is part Emily. Especially a tendency for head-in-the-sand I think. Emily tells herself she's fulfilling the roles and rules of high society in exchange for privilege and thinks she's happy doing that, but realizes her potential and drive for more. Rory tells herself that her family and boyfriend just 'happen' to be rich while she herself is humble, so she Has to do high society things, but really that's a comfort spot she chose for herself. It's not wrong for a teenager to be pulled into the promise of privilege especially when it gets her fat returns, but it's like what the Nepotism babies say: privilege only gets you so far, and maybe a cushion when you fail, but ultimately you have to prove yourself. In Rory's case unfortunately, the cushion took away her drive and tolerance for discomfort. And an exalted opinion of what she 'deserved'. But the Rory-Christopher comparison you made me feel sad for Christopher in a way: if he grew up without privilege (as in, rich family), could he have shown more potential when he was younger? I remember even Emily, who wanted Lorelai to marry Christopher, not having a good opinion about him even in his thirties. He didn't have the benefit Rory had of showing potential until college and letting everyone basking in the memory of who she was. At the very minimum, Christopher would've become Dean - not bookish smart or an intellectual, but hardworking, committed, and becoming professional from a younger age.
I am just finding your channel during a rewatch. Love the theme song you made haha. I don't know if I would consider Lane a prequel, because a prequel is something that takes place before the main story and Lane is very much in the canon here. I would consider her a kind of mirror for Lorelai's experiences though.
I like longer videos. I ultimately just am happy with any content you feel happy to share. Thank you for the video!! I enjoyed it a lot and I love hearing your thoughts 💕 (I agree with you btw)
i love how lane was respectful but still brave to do her stuff and talk to her mom about what she wanted while i feel like it never happened with lorelai and emily since they didn’t have a relationship at all! also i think lane wasn’t so pushy or stubborn as lorelai used to be and maybe that’s what changed things for her? the more she obeyed more her mom trusted her! i love how whenever her mom tried to match her with someone she said no but when she was able to choose her own partner she did get married by choice! i’m not actually about her getting married and everything but about how it was done! what makes me mad is that her love life was kinda weird after dave left and they weren’t able to build another great relationship to her! but she was capable of doing what she wanted the way she wanted and also made her mom proud and happy because she was raised right and she understood her mom’s motivation, she is so smart and strong i’m really proud of her character and i love her a lot! she was capable to have her life without losing connection with her family and that’s beautiful!
You know what should have happened with Lane, when all the teens were applying for colleges and mrs Kim applied to 7th day adventist college on behalf of Lane, why the hell didn’t stars hollow high guidance councillor sit down with Lane and help her to apply to some colleges away from stars hollow?! I know Lane loved her music but she was also highly organised with great time management skills and a passion for discovering unknown artists, I see her as more of a music producer given her advanced knowledge and love of so many bands. The episode where Lane has her aptitude test and it comes back with sales, could that have translated into something to do with the scouting of bands, and then producing and selling the albums for a label? I know mrs Kim would probably not fund a ‘’progressive’’ music school but let’s not forget about scholarships and also the fact that Lane was a grafter when passionate about something, I think she would have definitely paid her way through college with a couple jobs. Yes becoming a rockstar might have been too far fetched, but someone with Lane’s determination, passion, organisation and attention to detail could have hacked a more ‘feet on the ground’ corporate role in the industry. Don’t get me started on the Zack storyline…if there’s more to come from Gilmore girls, I hope we see Lane running an indie record label with the help of Hep Alien.
Thank you for explaining how people like this DO exist. I was heated when another youtuber was saying that the way Mrs. Kim was portrayed was problematic and this youtuber even listed her accent as a reason why without further explanation. There are mothers, particularly Asian mothers, who are like this (e.g., my own). Mrs. Kim might be extreme for a lot of people who never met someone like her, but it doesn't mean that she doesn't exist IRL. and like you said, Mrs. Kim was extreme but she meant well and she ultimately cared about Lane being protected. Sorry for the rant. You explain things very well in general and I am now subscribed :)
I havent watched the video yet but holy shit you’re so right! it’s painful/frustrating watching how she was treated, especially as someone who is Asian. And sure i get it, it’s early 2000s and white writers but nonetheless this show being iconic and watched by lots of ppl and getting away with it is what is just…ugh. And omg i love emily because she reminds me of my grandma (in the positive and negative ways) but honestly ms.kim is much better. (im listening to the video playing while im typing this lmao so yeah) but omg yeah like lane’s story being a prequel is accurate and as i am typing this im just listening to the video, all the points being made were on point! an amazing video! (And lmao yeah it’s kinda like rory doesn’t realize she’s more like christopher and wants to be like lorelai/mimic her mostly) and yeah lane deserves so much better writing!
I though it was pretty clear that Rory was a wannabe Lorelai, and she never grows out of it and regressed to being flaky like Christopher. The same as how she doesn't acknowledge her priviliged background, and acts as if she's different from other trust fund kids. As for Mrs.Kim she was never shown to be manipulative like Emily. I don't think the writing was bad but non-Asians perception of Mrs. Kim being a strict parent out of protection may be overlooked by the audience. The only thing that bugs people the most is Lane's outcome.
All I can say is that writing stuff that stands the test of time is really hard. No show has come close to accomplishing what this show has but despite all the brilliance, there are plenty of things about it that don't hold up.
Thank you for this video! I'm currently re-watching GG and you made me realize that Lane is Lorelai's Subplot Character(it may go by different names). Basically, the subplot character is supposed to parallel the protagonist by going through similar experiences so we - the audience - get to compare their actions and results in order to gain more insight. Lorelai thrived but Lane didn't. It's the saddest thing about the show bc Lane is a wonderful character and deserved the world but for the writers it might have been unrealistic to make both characters achieve their dreams. :(
Very good insights. I've loved Gilmore Girls for years and still binge watch often. One thing you mentioned though about how Lane didn't grow up rich - I think the fact that Mrs. Kim owned an antique store, she probably did make some pretty decent money, but she was probably just less showy about it in comparison to Richard and Emily. One other thing: has anyone else ever wondered how Lane got all of her CDs and stuff? She didn't have a job before she started working at Luke's much later on and of course Mrs. Kim would never buy her any of those things! lol
This video made me subscribe. I have watched GG maybe over 25 times in a row? I have thought about the similarities between Lorelai and Lane's childhood before but not in such an in-depth way. This is a great analysis! It would also make sense that Lane is Rory's friend since Lane shares so many similarities with Lorelai.
@@kierralovestv Also Lane deserved so much more! There is a point in the series where she should have cut Rory off! Rory was not a good friend to her. She deserved a better friend, husband, band, career, and life!
ive been rewatching this show since i was 14. im now 21 and lately my favorite character is lane. i adore how she adores music. every time theres a scene with her being an awesome music freak, it makes me happy. like when she was making her ads for the band & she included all her favorite music inspirations in alphabetical order. anyways i have been watching this show for ages but ive never really gotten into the online community. i’ll watch some more of your videos :-)
Thoughts: I loved the video! I'm definitely one of those who loves longer and deeper videos on niche topics. Honestly girl you have great ideas on Gilmore Girls and although I've watched the series several times, you seem to have a knack for finding concepts I hadn't considered. The only thing I'd say on criticism is that you seemed very worried/focused on when something messed up in your videos (like audio quality herein) and tend towards drawing attention to it. I understand -- point it out yourself so no one else can. But the consistent reminders just made it difficult for me to focus on what you were saying, and I doubt I'd have noticed the issues had you not pointed them out. Be proud of your work, girl! I love your videos!
Thank you! I do that because the internet has a unfortunate problem with being mean to random people for no reason just to be nitpicky or just for the sake of pointing out flaws on people. So yea, it’s about saying it so I don’t get 50 comments sayin “I liked the video but those audio issues ugh” it doesn’t really bother me personally bc I know I’m gonna update my equipment and quality of my videos as time progresses but some people get so triggered by seeing mistakes. Thank you for this comment btw! It helps to know specifically what’s working and what’s not and you were very kind about it 🤍
I love this video! I think you did amazing. I totally agree about enjoying super animated characters in both television and real life. I don't understand people who dislike them. Thanks again for the great content :D
I absolutely love this perspective! I honestly noticed this and thought a lot about it while watching the series, and I agree on how it’s overlooked. I felt connected towards her character though I don’t exactly relate to it. I like what they did with her in the beginning (besides the stereotypes which are ehh), but as it got further I’m not a fan of what the writers had her end up. I still love her nonetheless, but they definitely could’ve done her better. Thank you for your thoughts and this video! The difference between Mrs. Kim and Emily are evident. It was nice to listen to this video!
i could absolutely go for some more longform videos. you've got a great voice and sense of presentation. please do the gilmore girls series review idea you have, i'd eat that up !!
First time watching! I loved everything about your video. Would love for it to be longer. I’m building a deck and could listen forever about this topic
I totally agree with you about how realistic the characters are, these people do exist. I am from a small town myself and I have known all kinds of people, including odd ones. That's why I love this show as well since I relate.
I absolutely love your commentary and couldn't agree more - there are such strong parallels with Emily and Mrs. Kim as well as parallels between Lorelai and Lane. I really like that you broke down the difference in how they mother their daughters, particularly that Mrs. Kim was always using her control for Lane's safety and wellbeing (in her eyes) and Emily's was just controlling because she seemed fearful of losing her again or of the judgement of others if their family wasn't perfect or purely for controlling her. I have never noticed the parallels in Christopher in Rory but as you were explaining it, it made complete sense. Christopher never shirked the privileged life the way Lorelai did. When Rory is introduced into that life, such as with her coming out, we can see she enjoys it as well. We also know Christopher was a failure many times before finding his success, we see Rory in that same sinking ship in A Year in the Life. Lorelai, however, we know had to really work hard to be successful, including being a single mom and putting herself through business school alongside working. Rory was handed a lot and Christopher was as well. Lorelai chose a path of hardship and I think, as a result, was more successful and, overall, relatable and likeable.
Lane is one of my favorite characters, so underrated to! Loved her scenes, story and relationship with Lorelai in the first few seasons. I so wish she'd moved to LA and became a rockstar! Cliche but would have loved it, it's what she deserved. Also, as an animated person myself, gotta love her and all those characters.
You explain really well, first time I see a video of you. You're voice is by the way also really nice to listen to. Oh, and girl I feel the same about everything you said. Hell yes, I know these characters in real life. Lorelai and her mom reminds me of me and my mom. I loooove the show because of that.
This is the first video I've ever seen of yours but I'm now a subscriber! I've never thought about it this way before but you make some really great points. As for the question at the end, even though I just found your channel, I love long videos in general 😅 I think making a combo of both would work well, but honestly doing what feels right for you/the topic is what's most important! I'm happy to see what you come up with in the future (now to check out some of your older videos!) 😊
Your channel was recommended to me by TH-cam and I’m really glad that I clicked on this video. I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fan and really enjoyed listening to your perspective. You have a new subscriber and I’m off to watch your other videos.
You made a lot of really good points that I hadn’t considered! If I may offer one piece of advice, maybe don’t mention the audio issues/voice cracks/etc as much. Doing so just draws more attention to them. Anyway, thanks for making this!
Thank you but I get alot of people in my comments that like to point out every single mistake or flaw so if I don’t address it like that it only brings more of those type of comments Also my audio stuff is mostly fixed at the moment this is just back when I was having issues.
@@kierralovestv Well then don’t listen to me I guess. 😂 But I stand by everything else I said! I’ve loved Gilmore Girls since it first aired, and I think it’s awesome to hear people’s differing perspectives on characters I’ve grown up with.
I really enjoyed this video! I keep rewatching GG and I never saw it that way. Of course I caught up on the difficult mother daughter relationship but I never dreq the same parallel so this was very interesting to watch, and I also loved the format, you have an amazing voice-over sound.
Personally I love the longer videos I listen to then while I go on long runs! I love gilmore girls and sex and the city! So happy I found this channel.
I'm new to your channel and I'm already subscribing. So good. I love this length of video but I also love hours-long videos. It just depends. Sometimes with the extra long ones I'll watch them in sections so it doesn't make a big difference to me. The deeper the dive, the better.
READ ME BEFORE COMMENTING
hey everyone, I’m adding this right here for people who keep asking about the longer videos. I decided I’m gonna just make longer videos when I feel the topic warrants it. Don’t wanna force anything for the sake of video length.
Love your content!!
@@revidove hii thank you 😊
I appreciate shorter videos, because I'll often be like "oh I'll let myself watch a 15 min video before I go to sleep" but then they're all so long :(
WHERE HAS YOUR CHANNEL BEEN?! AHHH SO HAPPY I AM HERE.... I know these people in my life too. My mom is Lorelai Gilmore. Lane is one of my favorite characters and I agree she is so underrated
I’m still upset about where Lane ended up. I just feel like her character deserved so much better 😭

Oy with the poodles!
@@michellecollinsgalaviz2126 so what
@@michellecollinsgalaviz2126 "Rory was more like a young Emily " yea yea exactly, I also agree.
I totally meant to include this episode! Ik exactly which one you’re talking about 💕
I was hoping Emily's sister 'Sweety' was going to make an appearance. It was disappointing we didn't get to see a side of Emily who had history with a person, but one she was comfortable and happy with ☹
Wait Sweety was her friend who died... well whoever that was they said was her expatriate relative
Which is wild bc rory is so selfish she hasn’t even been there for her god kids
Emily’s sister’s name was Hopi.
Mrs. Kim showed the most growth of anyone on the show and she did it for Lane. She deserves her flowers
I loveee Lane and Paris and totally agree

id like to point out that just like christopher to lorelai, rory was sometimes very absent in lane's life, chris was avoiding lorelai and rory was too self-centered to focus or even listen about lane's problems
YES. I forgot about this too
Great article, thank you
@@anitawithag Welcome, glad you enjoyed it.
LOVE IT.
Sorry. I think this comment got attached to the wrong comment. This was a response to Rory didn’t get her act together. Why is she wandering
i think the people who claim that the characters in gilmore girls "aren't real" are probably not in any sort of community because i know so many people in my city (hell, even my neighborhood) who are carbon copies of each character.
ME TOO. I thought I was alone
Right? Who are these people and why do they lead such boring lives?
Im a hermit, I don't get out much
I know at least one like that and even I'd I didnt I wouldn't claim it's not realistic
sadly i don’t know people like this so that’s why i didn’t find the characters realistic
Ohhhh okay I can definitely see that.
I must research because I can't remember they ever mention him. I just thought he was dead or out the picture. I didn't get it.
Right he wasn't at his own daughters wedding and he shows up in revival weird
@@Marshallfamily. I assumed he was there but not pointed out as Lane's dad.
yeah i've always thought it was crazy, in the first season lane mentions her "parents" but you literally never see her father, even after lane moves out and sneaks into her mom's bedroom, her dad is not there in the bed.
!!!!
Yes omg mrs. Kim sleeping alone always made me !!!???
righttttt! we only see him once but if i remember correctly he doesn’t even speak
@@somethingbambi875 what about luke and april?
Lane is hands down the best character of the show (apart for Loelai). She carries the show in her showlders since Rory fall of grace (since Yale). They did her dirty with the final and the revival. And making her end up with Zac, what a dense guy.
Also Emily has a narcissistic personality, Miss Kim is just conservative.
Wow, Rory IS Christopher, I never though that.
I really like your takes (also agree, Logan is the wors with Rory, he brings the worst of her), the deep dive. Everytime I rewatch it with my mom we rant for ever about these things
Thank youu!
Yes to all of this! Every single point you make.
@@charoraimondogarcia
I agree, they completely forgot about Dave
i feel like another parallel for Lorelai’s backstory (in her teen years) is actually Jess Mariano. he was kind of a screw up in his teenage years, like Lorelai. then Jess went off on his own to California, like Lorelai running off to Stars Hollow with Rory. then, over the years, they’ve grown and matured into adults who seem to have it all figured out, but there’s always the one that got away (Rory/Christopher). it also helps to explain why Lorelai hated Jess when they first met; Lorelai used to be Jess when she was a teenager, and she didn’t want someone like that bringing Rory down.
there’s a video on youtube, i forget which one exactly, but it highlights more of the parallels between Jess and Lorelai and i love their parallels.
this is a brilliant observation
YES YES IVE ALWAYS SEEN IT YES
even during the "beer convo" she tellls jess that she knows alll about this shit, being the moody teenager.
How is Rory like Chris. Please explain to me.
Rory definitely became Christopher. Complete character transformation as she started out as the opposite.

omg, i never thought about the connection between lane and Lorelai before! love ur video! :)
Thank you!
I want a backstory for Mrs. Kim. She’s one of the most interesting characters.
!!!
Your Christopher theory has blown my mind!!! Ah!
As for video length, I’d say that you should make your videos long enough to explain your ideas on whatever topic that you choose and not be too concerned with the length. Then again, what do I know? You did a great job with this and I’m going to be thinking about it.
Thank you! 🥰🥰
Oh wow I never heard this about Lane’s character, and I agree!
Disagree with your Christopher points but yes to all the Lane stuff.
I love this Lane as Lorelai, Rory as Christopher theory! I totally see it.
I completely agree the show is realistic camp
The character interactions are real for the most part but the circumstances are camp
A single mother and her daughter: VERY real
Stars Hallow a very campy small (almost cult like town)
The citizens behave like real people with the occasional campy eccentricity
And I live for every minute of it.
Lane loves Zach, and persued him. They have a loving home with their sons, and fun playing music together.
I love your unique commentary. You made me realize a lot of the themes in the show!!
Thank you!
i disagree that mrs kim listens to lane and takes what she has to say into account. she says several times that parents can’t trust their children and that they have to do what is right regardless of how their children feel. but the key difference between emily and mrs kim is that mrs kim grew up in the same household as lane with a mother that didn’t understand her religion or understand her. she also can be swayed by logic or dedication like with dave and zach. so she was able to save her relationship with lane. emily grew up in a world where children listen to their parents and it worked out for her. she also has that “my way or the highway” attitude regardless of the situation.
I meant in the future she does when Lane is older. I’ll try to be clearer next time but I do agree with some of these points !!
I love that you love talking about Gilmore Girls. I’m currently watching the series now and love the commentary you’re providing.
i always thought this! great emily vs kim analysis. i like emily’s character but im so tired of people calling her “an icon that just tried her best and loved her daughter”. finally someone who sees it as i do.
yes I want longer videos; and you mentioned Cristopher, could you do a video about him-the downfall of Christopher or something. He was a mediocre father who never really showed he cared.

So happy to have found you! Great deep dive into Lane; I appreciated your thoughtfulness and great editing. Thank you!😊
Emily’s control is fueled by her need to keep up appearances. Emily needs to control how she appears to society.
I could see her change in the revival giving up the DAR society thing and just moving away.
Thank you!
You are so wrong.
I don’t think she was a bad mother but I think she tried to be Rory’s freind and live vicariously though her a little to much
You're so right!
Wait this makes sense
@@kierralovestv right? It fits Lane so well! They were playing at the bar, I think Lane and Zach run it.
Hmm. I never really thought about Rory ended up like Christopher when it comes to being indecisive and job hopping. Very insightful!
Thank you for your videos!
hey i just wanted to say that i absolutely love you for all your gilmore girls content, thank you!!
Thank youuu! 💗
This is one of my comfort shows!! I’m so excited for your season review videos!
I like the length of your videos just as they are, but if you did do some longer ones I’d watch those tooo!!
You’re inspiring me to do a Gilmore Girls podcast talking about each episode and such!
So happy i found your channel!!! I love this video thank you!!!
I love your videos because they're intelligent and help me feel so calm. I really enjoy your corner of the Internet x
Thank you!
loved the parallels you drew between characters in this video! haven't seen any other commentaries on GG that think about the show in this way. Subscribed and will be watching all your other GG commentaries!
Thank you!! Welcome welcome
I think you should make them as long as you want! This is a great video!!
Thank you!
You have a such a great narration voice!
Tysm
This was fun!! Can't believe I never made that connection between Lane and Lorelai!! Makes total sense, the way Lorelai covers for Lane and wants to foster her rebellion and independence. Makes me want to watch again from the beginning with fresh eyes! 🤔😲👍😁
💗 so happy to hear this
I feel like this miiiiight have occurred to me as I watched it for the first time like, seven years ago, but if it did, I’ve totally forgotten.
!!!!! & ty I’ll take that into consideration
This is very possible imo
my head canon is that dave & lane ended up together & had a successful music career & got married in their late 20s
Thank you!
i love how lane was respectful but still brave to do her stuff and talk to her mom about what she wanted while i feel like it never happened with lorelai and emily since they didn’t have a relationship at all! also i think lane wasn’t so pushy or stubborn as lorelai used to be and maybe that’s what changed things for her? the more she obeyed more her mom trusted her! i love how whenever her mom tried to match her with someone she said no but when she was able to choose her own partner she did get married by choice! i’m not actually about her getting married and everything but about how it was done! what makes me mad is that her love life was kinda weird after dave left and they weren’t able to build another great relationship to her! but she was capable of doing what she wanted the way she wanted and also made her mom proud and happy because she was raised right and she understood her mom’s motivation, she is so smart and strong i’m really proud of her character and i love her a lot! she was capable to have her life without losing connection with her family and that’s beautiful!
I love this series! Pls review more of Gilmore girls. Would LOVE a Logan slander video. And I like longer videos
Thank you for your videos. I have watched Gilmore Girls all the way through at least 3 times and did not think of the Rory/Christopher comparison 🤯
Definitely hope they harp on diversity more if they bring the show back again.
Another parallel between them is also that Lane became a young mother and had to navigate that while still figuring out who she was as a person.
Thank you!
And heavy on the “maybe over 25 times in a row”
@@kierralovestv Also Lane deserved so much more! There is a point in the series where she should have cut Rory off! Rory was not a good friend to her. She deserved a better friend, husband, band, career, and life!
@@clownfashion yessssss
ive been rewatching this show since i was 14. im now 21 and lately my favorite character is lane. i adore how she adores music. every time theres a scene with her being an awesome music freak, it makes me happy. like when she was making her ads for the band & she included all her favorite music inspirations in alphabetical order.
anyways i have been watching this show for ages but ive never really gotten into the online community. i’ll watch some more of your videos :-)
Kirk is one of my favorites lol he's so animated 😂
Right
I’m a new watcher and I just got to the part where Mrs Kim sets up the tour for Lanes band and I cried my eyes out 🥹 Emily could never
Thoughts: I loved the video!
It helps to know specifically what’s working and what’s not and you were very kind about it 🤍
@@kierralovestv Yeah, I guess you're right. People would comment just to complain.
I love this video! I think you did amazing. I totally agree about enjoying super animated characters in both television and real life. I don't understand people who dislike them. Thanks again for the great content :D
Thank you!
Thank you!
Yeah i noticed it constantly. It was always an interesting parallel.
i could absolutely go for some more longform videos. you've got a great voice and sense of presentation. please do the gilmore girls series review idea you have, i'd eat that up !!
Thank you!
First time watching! I loved everything about your video. Would love for it to be longer. I’m building a deck and could listen forever about this topic
A+ video! always make the videos you want to! Though I'm always a fan of longer videos. TTFN
Love this take!! Would love if you did a series on GG… im here for it!!!
Thank you !
Love love love this video! You're great and this is all so good. I definitely have felt the loving care from Lorelei toward Lane.
Thank you!
Thank you
Your channel was recommended to me by TH-cam and I’m really glad that I clicked on this video. I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fan and really enjoyed listening to your perspective. You have a new subscriber and I’m off to watch your other videos.
☺️☺️ thank youuu
hi this its the first video of yours that I have seen, love your style and opinions❤️
You made a lot of really good points that I hadn’t considered! If I may offer one piece of advice, maybe don’t mention the audio issues/voice cracks/etc as much. Doing so just draws more attention to them. Anyway, thanks for making this!
Thank you but I get alot of people in my comments that like to point out every single mistake or flaw so if I don’t address it like that it only brings more of those type of comments
Also my audio stuff is mostly fixed at the moment this is just back when I was having issues.
@@kierralovestv Well then don’t listen to me I guess. 😂 But I stand by everything else I said! I’ve loved Gilmore Girls since it first aired, and I think it’s awesome to hear people’s differing perspectives on characters I’ve grown up with.

"Children ought to be free to lead their own lives"
I really enjoyed this video! I keep rewatching GG and I never saw it that way. Of course I caught up on the difficult mother daughter relationship but I never dreq the same parallel so this was very interesting to watch, and I also loved the format, you have an amazing voice-over sound.
This is the truest thing I’ve ever heard. Thank you!!!
I personally like videos with this type of length!! Also you are so underrated! I love hearing your opinions and watching your videos.
Thank youuuu sm for watching
Personally I love the longer videos I listen to then while I go on long runs! I love gilmore girls and sex and the city! So happy I found this channel.
I wish they would do a Lane spin off where she starts a new life in a big city chasing after her dreams. She deserves it!
I'm new to your channel and I'm already subscribing. So good. I love this length of video but I also love hours-long videos. It just depends. Sometimes with the extra long ones I'll watch them in sections so it doesn't make a big difference to me. The deeper the dive, the better.
Welcome! & thank you
