Lane is not a great character at all. She has been leeching off of Rory and Lorelei: food, garage, living with them. She dropped off of college she hated, she could have attended at least community college but she did not want growth, she preferred to work at Lukes. She falls too easily in and out of love and is submissive to her mother, instead of standing up for herself, she complains for seasons. I think she was set up for failing, the band was never plan A for her, she chose other things. I still do not know how she learned drums just by playing in that shop once a week or so in season 1. Unrealistic af. Being enthusiastic and excited is not necessarily a sign of being most invested. Also, she is controlling, exactly like her mother. I see nothing good about her 🤷♀️

I think not wanting to attend college is normal and there are many different ways to grow that don’t include college. Now I do agree that her playing drums is random. It might help to learn about generational trauma as well as the plight of 1st generation citizens and the pressures put on them by immigrant parents and what all that entails. That helps alot to explain the relationship between Lane and her mother. Also, in many Asian cultures girls and young women and extremely submissive. That's just realistic. I think the writers did her dirty in the latter half of the show but she's still a good character and honestly her character arc is one of the most realistic ones on the show. The odds of her band making it big is slim to none. Yea her getting pregnant at 19 was a bit extreme but it happens. At the end she winds up I'm a better place than Rory that's for sure.
I think it was a mistake for Lane to get involved with Zach. Without that relationship, she could have used the band to get some exposure and move onto another group that was as driven as she was while the guys could have their low-key gig lifestyle.
I still wish if Lane HAD to end up with a band member, it would've been Brian, they always seemed the most complimentary and he took active interest in her family and was really supportive of her as a person
Lane Kim deserved SO much more. It's not even I dislike Zach but like we barely got to see them as a couple have cute moments unlike Dave...we are just told Lane likes Zach and expected to believe it instead of making them have good chemistry so we can come to the conclusion as an audience without being told. As for her music career, the end may be realistic but Lane was SO devoted to music it just stings...If Lorelai could afford an Inn as a single Mum while paying for an Ivy League school then Lane should be on world tours and the cover of Rolling Stone!!
100% yes on the lack of scenes between Zach and Lane. There was only one episode establishing Lane's feelings and then it just escalated really quickly. The show took it's time with Dave but not with Zach. It felt like an afterthought. Lane's ending does sting... I have a lot to say on it but I'm saving it for the AYITL video.
Gil 100% ❤ I love Lane and I have probably too much in common with her but now that I'm older I feel I prefer Gil perspective and attitude on things. And I love him on a meta level too, because it's so refreshing to see a guy like that in appearances seems to be a "fellow kids man" who ends up just really liking music and playing in a band. It's lovely ❤ And it's very nice to see a non conventional adult be responsible, mature and respectful for once.
I found myself identifying with Lane while making this video, especially the decisions that she made for the band. I could see myself taking over in this way. Gil is such a joy to watch because of what you said!
I could be wrong, but to me the band represented Lane's strong desire for independence and she needed something to focus on to help her rebel and break free from the "shackles" of pressure her mom put on her. I know this has been pointed out before by others, but Lane seems to have almost a mirrored plot to Lorelei's when it comes to their upbringing. Only Lane doesn't come from a super rich family, but they both come from controlling families where the mother is the main source of control. I feel like Lane having a baby so young when she just wants to explore her independence further is very similar to Lorelei's problem. Though, they both have to embrace their responsibilities handed to them even though neither are probably ready for them. I also notice Lane is closer friends with Rory when Rory is close with her Mom and when Rory starts to gain a bit of independence from Lorelei, Lane is still there, but they still don't seem as close with each other. I feel like Rory becomes less understanding of Lorelei's problems the more she starts to gain favor with her grandparents. She feels less empathy for her Mom and when Lane has more freedom, doesn't seem to be around Lane as much. Personally, I respect both Lorelei and Lane's struggles with becoming independent people. It's hard to break that, especially if you do have a strong respect for family like they do seem to. I don't think either of them wanted to break their mother's hearts, but they needed to protect themselves and do what was right for them, by attempting to grow. For those that think Lorelei doesn't have a strong respect for family, I do think she does, or else you wouldn't see her doing all that she does for Rory. I think she wishes things were different with the relationship she has with her Mom and Dad, but she has to radically accept the reality of it. That's probably why she coddles Rory so much. She also protects Lane because she knows what she's going through.
To be fair to Zach, I knew A LOT of guys like him when I was an arts major in college. Most of them mellowed out eventually. Which us not to excuse his bad behavior, but it's true to life. And Brian IS adorable! And so are his parents. They brought cartot sticks to the gig!
I also think Zack didn't like Gil due to jealousy, on the superficial level like you pointed out Gil is one of the prettiest people on the show I'm not even into blondes and I see it. Gil also because he's older has more experience with music, not only has he been playing longer he's seen and done things no one else has because they were too young or not even born yet. Gil has as the oldest and most experienced not to mention his knowledge and clear head has a very legitimate claim to be band leader. Zack is also confident but in a very insecure way while Gil is just confident, confident all these things combined is why I think Zack didn't like Gil at first. Also my mom who is into music says that as far as the bands go the music is slightly above average and has potential but more than anything else she said they're a personality band the kind of band that doesn't have the greatest music but has great personality and a really fun stage presence think Grateful Dead they're music is not amazing what made them amazing is that they built a whole culture WITHIN a culture!
That's an interesting point, I haven't thought about it that way but it makes sense. There can only be one long-haired blond in the group. 😆 Gil seems like he is hitting it out of the park with the guitar playing and he is a singer (this is not canon for the show but Gil is also a stronger singer). I like what your mom said about a personality band. The energy and culture surrounding a band can go a long way.
It's been a long time since I've watched, and I've only been through it once so far, but I remember thinking the same thing the first time I saw that episode. I also thought that Zach thought Gil was maybe too over the top so combine that with the jealousy and that's enough for Zach to be cold to him. The fact that Gil was so much older was kind of the nail in the coffin. Looking forward to my re-watch to see if I pick up on anything differently

Honestly everyone but Zach. Brian is lovely (should have ended up with lane and I will die on this hill) Lane is driven and responsible Dave is diplomatic and kind. And Gil is just amazing in every way. He is gorgeous and I dare anyone to not smile when he is in a scene.

Zach is actually one of my least favorite characters on this show not only because he derailed Lane’s career and halted her development dead in its tracks, but he also derailed Hep Alien’s career. He pisses me off seriously. Lane settled for Zach instead of him truly being the love of her life, and that makes me sad.
Gil (Sebastian Bach) is definitely my favorite character in the band. He is a true asset. Even if he doesn’t play the guitar in the real life as well as in the show, wow! He knows how to sing and how to be on stage. The fact that he is older, who cares? We shouldn’t care. If Mick Jagger wanted to create a band with me, I wouldn’t say: you are too old, I would be so flattered because talent has no age. Lane is, that’s right, very success oriented regarding her band, as is Mrs Kim actually. But the most important is that this band continued playing and enjoying music, in the reboot as well. And that’s how it should be. A lot of bands are touring locally and sometimes not locally only, touring all the time, selling tee shirts and CDs, and still are not famous nationwide or internationally. It doesn’t matter, these bands exist, they do some music, they are appreciated by a lot of people. As long as an artist manages to emotionally touch at least one person, it’s a success in itself, whatever the art is.
Gil is my favorite and he was just such a fun addition to the show in general. My unpopular take is that Lane's ending is not sad at all. It's reality, a lot of us have dreams of making it big but the reality of fame is not great. I see Lane maturing and still having music in her life, but also having a family. I think that's a rich life; that's my life and the life of most of the population.
I thinknits realistic, but it also feels like some aspects were just to punish lane lol. Like she grew up under a controlling, opressive religious mom just for her first time to suck, which is normal in those circumstances but instead of making her get pregnant with one kids let's make them twins! Like Idk if Amy was trying to make a point (although, it would be pretty bad due to the circumstances) or just wanted to bully Lane some more, lol.
As a watcher, we’re rooting for Lane to get what she wants and more. To summarize, it just seems sucky that she’s married to someone who isn’t as passionate over the same things as Lane (even when she’s being an idealist/unrealistic), and that he isn’t a sweet romantic. Perhaps it’s because I don’t have kids, but I feel like it’s also nicer when people can plan ahead when they want to bring kids into their life instead of the choice being made for them.

There was so much I love about this video! My thoughts..I love music as much as Lane does.I think I'm (like) her! Dave was a wonderful first boyfriend for her. I love Sebastian and Gil both. I was very disappointed that Lane wasn't a successful musician like she wanted to be, instead involved with her mother's store. Again, great video!

Honestly, I would be curious to see how the band would evolve with the onset of new technology and TH-cam. Plenty of musicians now are creating their own albums from home and posting them to the internet before they get famous or a record deal. I will say Lane does work as a good example on how priorities can change overtime and dreams can change as well. That said, I could see Lane get back into music once her kids have grown a bit. Based on your video, now I'm curious how a relationship between Brian and Lane would have gone down. Maybe the writer's decided to focus on Lane and Zach because they would have more drama due to their opposing personalities?
Gil and Brian were my favorite. Both are so sweet and have good vibes. They're both the type of guys I go for 😂 Also Lane is one of my favorite characters through the show. I rooted sooooo hard for Lane. I find the story arch of her and her mother to be sooo good because they took their time I love Lane and Zack's wedding episode. Mrs Kim's eventual acceptance and then full support of Lane was a wonderful journey.
I wonder how you feel about the lane and brian ship. I see so many people root for those too. While I love Zach and Lane, I do get curious about what a relationship between lane and brian would be.
I would have loved to see Lane and Brian together. The scene with Lane's twins makes me wish that it was the storyline that we got. If I were to rewrite the show, I would have turned her plotline into a love triangle, starting with the episode where Brian writes a song for her.
Favourite Band character on the show: Gil! Band character i'd like to hang out in life? Brian (gil is great, but someone with THAT much enthusiasm is exhausting in real life!) It wasn't Lanes show but Rorys, and i think the revival just did everyone dirty...i mean, it's realistic that Jep Alien did not get rolling stones fampus, but i like to imagine her working in music, her band being a desired wedding band for hire or something with a real practising space..not middle aged ppl still practising in a living room with lane working at Luke's..
I know! I've said this before, but I wish since the writers were going for a "history repeats itself theme," they should have emphasized the Lorelei/Lane connection. Both had an overbearing mother, both had children young, both had to defer their dreams... But while we saw Lorelei carve out a life for herself and eventually owned her own inn and found true love, we didn't get to really see Lane's happy ending. I don't know if I blame the writers' "goals" for Lane as much as I blame them just... forgetting her

My biggest regret regarding the band is that - Lane didn't do anything music related later on. She works with her mom in the new eps. Yes, the band is playing, still, but its not enough somehow? There is nothing wrong with working with your mom, but still.. Zack and Lane could've buy the music shop? Or team up with Miss Patty, and have a music school? The fact that you don't became famuos doesn't mean you have to give up everything. Would you consider an idea of mine maybe? If it would be up to you, how would you write Dean as a character? I know he is problematic, but I think its because of shitty writing. I always tought that it would've been so much more interesting if the writers just keep building him up after Jess showed up. Because that way the watcher could actually pick while Rory did. As it was the show just told us that A is bad and B is good. Like I think he could've shown a different type of intelligence to the audience than academic Rory, or artsy Jess, and that would've been interesting. Like yes, its a questionable gift, maybe, but the boy who could build a car from the ground up at 16 is not an idiot. Maybe he could've shown us somebody who really struggled with finances, and wasn't going to school for academic reasons but in the hope of a better life... Not to mention, Dean deserves a much better last apperence in the show, and since you did what if videos before I'm interested in your opinion. Okay. Your suggestion is very interesting. I would have to think about how I would change him, I haven't really considered that before. There are so many directions he could go in! i think the worst part of the revival is everything was *too* real. we all knew people in high school that dreamed of getting famous or making it big but of course it didn’t happen, like with Lane and Rory. but boy is it a bummer to watch play out with your favorite characters 🥲
I'm with you there. I understand the point when it comes to the revival, but I would have preferred a different story. I understand the people who are upset by the lackluster endings, and I understand the people who appreciate the fact that the show was at least realistic.
Watching this analysis, I think there may be a meta narrative happening with all the young characters (but in some ways with Lorelai, maybe Christopher too, because we see flashbacks of them as teenagers) between a teenager / young adult's dream and an adult's dream. All the young characters whom we follow from young adulthood to adulthood (Rory, Lane, Paris, Jess, Dean, Logan) have a youthful fantasy of their adulthood that doesn't pan out (For Jess, the fantasy was not positive) and they need to embrace the compromises of adulthood.
Off topic but pairing Lane with Zach seems so weird, even years after the show ended!! I think she would had been way better with Brian. He was sweet and kind and considerate.
I've been slowly catching up on your videos, and this one really got me thinking. What you say makes a lot of sense, even if it is still kind of sad for Lane, but I keep going back to when the band broke up in S6, and Lane moved back in with her mom and just straight up quit playing the drums. As you said, Gil and Brian kept playing together, and I guess I can see why she might not want to join them after what happened, even if Zach was out, but why didn't she try looking for another band to play with? When she was dating Zach, she might have felt like she had to stay with the band, even if they had different goals, but once the band was broken up, as were her and Zach, she would have been free to pursue other options. Instead, she just moves home and starts working for her mother. I mean, I know she didn't have much by way of money, but I feel like, a) she could find other roommates if she needed to, and b) her mother had come around more to the band at that point, so if she had to move home, maybe her mom would have let her still play. It's kind of weird, now that I think about it, that she just sort of quit on her music and her dream. Thoughts?
You bring up an interesting point. I feel like Lane’s decision to move back in with her mom and not look for another band is a way to show how defeated she felt. She invested so much time into this bad and so much emotional energy that the idea of jumping back on the horse didn’t even cross her mind. I would imagine that given enough time, she would have looked for a new band but she needed a long recovery period from what happened.
It upsets me how forgiving the show was to Mrs. Kim. She was much worse than Emily Gilmore, did not accept Lane as she was, the girl has to live in a closets for god sake! She was extremely cold and streaked and limited her freedom and her ambitions. She locked her at the house for months without any contact to the other world, simply for drink one beer and play in a band! That's children abuse. She had no choice in life there but to go to a religious college or marry a Korean. Because of this, Laine had no high education and no opportunity to learn a profession, and she also had no sexual education. This led her to a dead end that was presented too brightly in the series, when in reality it is more likely that Lane would have sunk into a heavy depression. All she wanted was to engage in music and experience things beyond her narrow world and she didn't get that. She is stuck with a baby and an unsuitable partner, without any professional fulfillment, just because she did not receive sufficient guidance and support. I'm very frustrated that Rory and Lorelai don't see this and don't help her get on the right track, especially Lorelai with all her experience. I think the show underestimates what Lane is dealing with. Her home life is very difficult, she does not receive any love, approval or horizon for the future and has to hide her real self constantly. Her life is a tragedy and it doesn't get better at the end of the show, they try to present it as a small compromise and it's even more infuriating. She got the plot line that's was planned for Rory, if it was Rory it was happends to her at the time no one would let it slide like that.
My favorite character is Brian, he's such a good camper. I think we all agree that Zach and Lane's romantic relationship was a mistake. It would've been better for all of us if they just stayed bandmembers. One thing I resent about the show is that everyone has to have a relationship, I mean, we had all that from Lorelai and Rory, so why not make Lane a career driven character, not only because it would've been different but also because it is an unusual career itself. It would have been far more interesting than that terribly pregnancy plotline.
I wonder if maybe the writers didn't want any characters to be "abandoned" or "left behind" so to speak. Perhaps they thought fans would judge the show for not giving the best friend a guy. Although I guess Rory did end up single at the end of the series.
I like Gil. He's super cool! I like the band because I interpret them as an example of when inter-band politics can go wrong if you don't have at least one musician who's level-headed, mature, and nuanced.
I don’t think the band failed. I just think we didn’t see them play in a venue so we don’t know what they are doing professionally and that’s important. But this is a band that has been together for over a decade. That’s more that just a hobby or garage band. They’re just working artists with day jobs and families who haven’t achieved the big time. It’s very realistic for working artists, including very skilled ones.
I agree, Sebastian Bach is soooo beautiful! Haha, I love him and Skid Row. Easily one of the best voices in rock n roll, probably one of the best ever. Gil was my favorite on my first watch but I didn't realize at the time who played him. I'm sure I'll have even more fun when I do a re-watch! I'm hoping to like Zach more too actually. He was fine for the most part but he was annoying pretty often and I thought the writers really did Lane dirty by pairing them together. While I can forgive that, the fact that they wrote her to be pregnant so soon and to not have any sort of career in music was so disheartening. I'd love to see her as a studio musician, teaching music, or even just running a record store. She she had to put up with this super strict lifestyle and put on a front to appease her mom for so long, and then finally when Mrs. Kim chooses to just love and accept her daughter as she is, Lane still ends up getting stuck in way.
On the next VH1's Ajacent to the Sound: The saga of Hep Alien is an honest depiction of how childhood dreams very rarely survive adulthood. But would it survive Gil's inevitable bout with obesity, and one band member's hospitalization due to an overdose of cracker jacks?
Idk why people think it's odd that Hep Alien stayed in the garage phase. That's the norm. The arts are HIGHLY competitive. It doesn't matter how good you are; without a heavy dose of luck, it won't happen. Also, they worried too much about their image and didn't advertise much. Sure, they had one tour that Lane's mother got them, but without her, they never would have left Stars Hollow. They needed a manager who understands the business. They didn't have a manager at all. A good manager and a heavy dose of humble pie would have made them more seen and more marketable.
I can understand Zack as a character cause I’ve been there. Now I of course haven’t done the same things he has done but I can understand him as a character because I’m in a band and often don’t like some of the ideas my band mates come up with because I’m not a fan of change. However that is something I’m working on. Zack is a control freak and when he isn’t in control he screws up. Part of the reason I like him because he is realistic in that sense. He makes mistakes however his big mistake was really out of character.

Help Alien was never good enough to become famous. at least not good enough for them to make a living off of it. least of all with Zack as lead singer. That being said, the band should have been used as a stepping stone for Lane to work towards getting a career in music. she could have a music maneger, or radio host, or a talent scout.
You know, I was invested in Lane's story when Dave was on the show. And when I say "invested", I mean to say that I'd be into it when the show gave her moments during the show. When Adam Brody left the show they botched it; I simply never bought the reason they gave. That level of botched-writing extends to Lane, where you can see them stumbling to try and reorient what to do with her. I'd have preferred they cast an entirely new person as an entirely new love interest instead of Zach. It reached the point where I'd mentally zone out a bit during Lane's portions on the show.
the label showcase episode where Zach acts so awful is a reference to the documentary 'dig' about the rivalry between the two bands Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols. I think he is supposed to be acting as arrogantly as the front men of those bands (Joel - the new member Zach invites - is the real tambourine player from BJTM, who is also in the same documentary).
Lauren is absolutely stunning. I don't mean to imply that she is not gorgeous. Once you hit this level of beauty, the question of who is the most beautiful becomes a matter of preference.
The older I get, the less I like Luke, Zach and Jess. They are rude, angry, selfish, violent men who will occasionally do something sweet for the women who put up with their nonsense. In real life, there’s nothing cute or fun about living with these guys.

Gil 100% ❤ I love Lane and I have probably too much in common with her but now that I'm older I feel I prefer Gil perspective and attitude on things. And I love him on a meta level too, because it's so refreshing to see a guy like that in appearances seems to be a "fellow kids man" who ends up just really liking music and playing in a band. It's lovely ❤ And it's very nice to see a non conventional adult be responsible, mature and respectful for once.
I found myself identifying with Lane while making this video, especially the decisions that she made for the band. I could see myself taking over in this way. Gil is such a joy to watch because of what you said!

I could be wrong, but to me the band represented Lane's strong desire for independence and she needed something to focus on to help her rebel and break free from the "shackles" of pressure her mom put on her.
I know this has been pointed out before by others, but Lane seems to have almost a mirrored plot to Lorelei's when it comes to their upbringing. Only Lane doesn't come from a super rich family, but they both come from controlling families where the mother is the main source of control. I feel like Lane having a baby so young when she just wants to explore her independence further is very similar to Lorelei's problem. Though, they both have to embrace their responsibilities handed to them even though neither are probably ready for them.
I also notice Lane is closer friends with Rory when Rory is close with her Mom and when Rory starts to gain a bit of independence from Lorelei, Lane is still there, but they still don't seem as close with each other. I feel like Rory becomes less understanding of Lorelei's problems the more she starts to gain favor with her grandparents. She feels less empathy for her Mom and when Lane has more freedom, doesn't seem to be around Lane as much.
Personally, I respect both Lorelei and Lane's struggles with becoming independent people. It's hard to break that, especially if you do have a strong respect for family like they do seem to. I don't think either of them wanted to break their mother's hearts, but they needed to protect themselves and do what was right for them, by attempting to grow.
For those that think Lorelei doesn't have a strong respect for family, I do think she does, or else you wouldn't see her doing all that she does for Rory. I think she wishes things were different with the relationship she has with her Mom and Dad, but she has to radically accept the reality of it. That's probably why she coddles Rory so much. She also protects Lane because she knows what she's going through.
I rather imagine in my head that if Lane got famous, she would be somewhat similar to Mitski, but a Rock n' Roll Mitski

I also think Zack didn't like Gil due to jealousy, on the superficial level like you pointed out Gil is one of the prettiest people on the show I'm not even into blondes and I see it. Gil also because he's older has more experience with music, not only has he been playing longer he's seen and done things no one else has because they were too young or not even born yet. Gil has as the oldest and most experienced not to mention his knowledge and clear head has a very legitimate claim to be band leader. Zack is also confident but in a very insecure way while Gil is just confident, confident all these things combined is why I think Zack didn't like Gil at first. Also my mom who is into music says that as far as the bands go the music is slightly above average and has potential but more than anything else she said they're a personality band the kind of band that doesn't have the greatest music but has great personality and a really fun stage presence think Grateful Dead they're music is not amazing what made them amazing is that they built a whole culture WITHIN a culture!
That's an interesting point, I haven't thought about it that way but it makes sense. There can only be one long-haired blond in the group. 😆 Gil seems like he is hitting it out of the park with the guitar playing and he is a singer (this is not canon for the show but Gil is also a stronger singer). I like what your mom said about a personality band. The energy and culture surrounding a band can go a long way.

It's been a long time since I've watched, and I've only been through it once so far, but I remember thinking the same thing the first time I saw that episode. I also thought that Zach thought Gil was maybe too over the top so combine that with the jealousy and that's enough for Zach to be cold to him. The fact that Gil was so much older was kind of the nail in the coffin. Looking forward to my re-watch to see if I pick up on anything differently

Zach is actually one of my least favorite characters on this show not only because he derailed Lane’s career and halted her development dead in its tracks, but he also derailed Hep Alien’s career. He pisses me off seriously. Lane settled for Zach instead of him truly being the love of her life, and that makes me sad.
Gil (Sebastian Bach) is definitely my favorite character in the band. He is a true asset. Even if he doesn’t play the guitar in the real life as well as in the show, wow! He knows how to sing and how to be on stage. The fact that he is older, who cares? We shouldn’t care. If Mick Jagger wanted to create a band with me, I wouldn’t say: you are too old, I would be so flattered because talent has no age.
Lane is, that’s right, very success oriented regarding her band, as is Mrs Kim actually. But the most important is that this band continued playing and enjoying music, in the reboot as well. And that’s how it should be. A lot of bands are touring locally and sometimes not locally only, touring all the time, selling tee shirts and CDs, and still are not famous nationwide or internationally. It doesn’t matter, these bands exist, they do some music, they are appreciated by a lot of people. As long as an artist manages to emotionally touch at least one person, it’s a success in itself, whatever the art is.
That is true, there is a lot to a band beyond a record deal. A lot of bands enjoy playing locally and connecting with their small community.
Gil is my favorite and he was just such a fun addition to the show in general.

My unpopular take is that Lane's ending is not sad at all. It's reality, a lot of us have dreams of making it big but the reality of fame is not great. I see Lane maturing and still having music in her life, but also having a family. I think that's a rich life; that's my life and the life of most of the population.
I thinknits realistic, but it also feels like some aspects were just to punish lane lol. Like she grew up under a controlling, opressive religious mom just for her first time to suck, which is normal in those circumstances but instead of making her get pregnant with one kids let's make them twins! Like Idk if Amy was trying to make a point (although, it would be pretty bad due to the circumstances) or just wanted to bully Lane some more, lol.
There is a big differece between not making it big, which is fine, and what Lane got.

As a watcher, we’re rooting for Lane to get what she wants and more. To summarize, it just seems sucky that she’s married to someone who isn’t as passionate over the same things as Lane (even when she’s being an idealist/unrealistic), and that he isn’t a sweet romantic.
Perhaps it’s because I don’t have kids, but I feel like it’s also nicer when people can plan ahead when they want to bring kids into their life instead of the choice being made for them.

There was so much I love about this video! My thoughts..I love music as much as Lane does.I think I'm (like) her! Dave was a wonderful first boyfriend for her. I love Sebastian and Gil both. I was very disappointed that Lane wasn't a successful musician like she wanted to be, instead involved with her mother's store. Again, great video!

Honestly, I would be curious to see how the band would evolve with the onset of new technology and TH-cam. Plenty of musicians now are creating their own albums from home and posting them to the internet before they get famous or a record deal.
I will say Lane does work as a good example on how priorities can change overtime and dreams can change as well. That said, I could see Lane get back into music once her kids have grown a bit.
Based on your video, now I'm curious how a relationship between Brian and Lane would have gone down. Maybe the writer's decided to focus on Lane and Zach because they would have more drama due to their opposing personalities?
Gil and Brian were my favorite. Both are so sweet and have good vibes. They're both the type of guys I go for 😂
Also Lane is one of my favorite characters through the show. I rooted sooooo hard for Lane. I find the story arch of her and her mother to be sooo good because they took their time I love Lane and Zack's wedding episode. Mrs Kim's eventual acceptance and then full support of Lane was a wonderful journey.
I really like their story arc too. I think the relationship between Mrs. Kim and Lane goes through the biggest transformation on the show.
I wonder how you feel about the lane and brian ship. I see so many people root for those too.

I would have loved to see Lane and Brian together. The scene with Lane's twins makes me wish that it was the storyline that we got. If I were to rewrite the show, I would have turned her plotline into a love triangle, starting with the episode where Brian writes a song for her.

It wasn't Lanes show but Rorys, and i think the revival just did everyone dirty...i mean, it's realistic that Jep Alien did not get rolling stones fampus, but i like to imagine her working in music, her band being a desired wedding band for hire or something with a real practising space..not middle aged ppl still practising in a living room with lane working at Luke's..
I know! I've said this before, but I wish since the writers were going for a "history repeats itself theme," they should have emphasized the Lorelei/Lane connection. Both had an overbearing mother, both had children young, both had to defer their dreams... But while we saw Lorelei carve out a life for herself and eventually owned her own inn and found true love, we didn't get to really see Lane's happy ending. I don't know if I blame the writers' "goals" for Lane as much as I blame them just... forgetting her

My biggest regret regarding the band is that - Lane didn't do anything music related later on. She works with her mom in the new eps. Yes, the band is playing, still, but its not enough somehow? There is nothing wrong with working with your mom, but still.. Zack and Lane could've buy the music shop? Or team up with Miss Patty, and have a music school? The fact that you don't became famuos doesn't mean you have to give up everything.
Would you consider an idea of mine maybe? If it would be up to you, how would you write Dean as a character? I know he is problematic, but I think its because of shitty writing. I always tought that it would've been so much more interesting if the writers just keep building him up after Jess showed up. Because that way the watcher could actually pick while Rory did. As it was the show just told us that A is bad and B is good. Like I think he could've shown a different type of intelligence to the audience than academic Rory, or artsy Jess, and that would've been interesting. Like yes, its a questionable gift, maybe, but the boy who could build a car from the ground up at 16 is not an idiot. Maybe he could've shown us somebody who really struggled with finances, and wasn't going to school for academic reasons but in the hope of a better life...
Not to mention, Dean deserves a much better last apperence in the show, and since you did what if videos before I'm interested in your opinion. Okay. Sorry, for being long, and thanks for the band vid, its so cool!❤

i think the worst part of the revival is everything was *too* real. we all knew people in high school that dreamed of getting famous or making it big but of course it didn’t happen, like with Lane and Rory. but boy is it a bummer to watch play out with your favorite characters 🥲
I'm with you there. I understand the point when it comes to the revival, but I would have preferred a different story. I understand the people who are upset by the lackluster endings, and I understand the people who appreciate the fact that the show was at least realistic.
Rory is the definition of "peaked in high school"
Watching this analysis, I think there may be a meta narrative happening with all the young characters (but in some ways with Lorelai, maybe Christopher too, because we see flashbacks of them as teenagers) between a teenager / young adult's dream and an adult's dream. All the young characters whom we follow from young adulthood to adulthood (Rory, Lane, Paris, Jess, Dean, Logan) have a youthful fantasy of their adulthood that doesn't pan out (For Jess, the fantasy was not positive) and they need to embrace the compromises of adulthood.
Off topic but pairing Lane with Zach seems so weird, even years after the show ended!! I think she would had been way better with Brian. He was sweet and kind and considerate.
I agree, it was an odd pairing. I have some theories as to why the writers went that direction but it's all speculation.

I've been slowly catching up on your videos, and this one really got me thinking. What you say makes a lot of sense, even if it is still kind of sad for Lane, but I keep going back to when the band broke up in S6, and Lane moved back in with her mom and just straight up quit playing the drums. As you said, Gil and Brian kept playing together, and I guess I can see why she might not want to join them after what happened, even if Zach was out, but why didn't she try looking for another band to play with? When she was dating Zach, she might have felt like she had to stay with the band, even if they had different goals, but once the band was broken up, as were her and Zach, she would have been free to pursue other options. Instead, she just moves home and starts working for her mother. I mean, I know she didn't have much by way of money, but I feel like, a) she could find other roommates if she needed to, and b) her mother had come around more to the band at that point, so if she had to move home, maybe her mom would have let her still play. It's kind of weird, now that I think about it, that she just sort of quit on her music and her dream. Thoughts?
You bring up an interesting point. I feel like Lane’s decision to move back in with her mom and not look for another band is a way to show how defeated she felt. She invested so much time into this bad and so much emotional energy that the idea of jumping back on the horse didn’t even cross her mind. I would imagine that given enough time, she would have looked for a new band but she needed a long recovery period from what happened.
It upsets me how forgiving the show was to Mrs. Kim. She was much worse than Emily Gilmore, did not accept Lane as she was, the girl has to live in a closets for god sake! She was extremely cold and streaked and limited her freedom and her ambitions. She locked her at the house for months without any contact to the other world, simply for drink one beer and play in a band! That's children abuse.
She had no choice in life there but to go to a religious college or marry a Korean. Because of this, Laine had no high education and no opportunity to learn a profession, and she also had no sexual education. This led her to a dead end that was presented too brightly in the series, when in reality it is more likely that Lane would have sunk into a heavy depression. All she wanted was to engage in music and experience things beyond her narrow world and she didn't get that. She is stuck with a baby and an unsuitable partner, without any professional fulfillment, just because she did not receive sufficient guidance and support.
I'm very frustrated that Rory and Lorelai don't see this and don't help her get on the right track, especially Lorelai with all her experience.
I think the show underestimates what Lane is dealing with. Her home life is very difficult, she does not receive any love, approval or horizon for the future and has to hide her real self constantly. Her life is a tragedy and it doesn't get better at the end of the show, they try to present it as a small compromise and it's even more infuriating. She got the plot line that's was planned for Rory, if it was Rory it was happends to her at the time no one would let it slide like that.

My favorite character is Brian, he's such a good camper. I think we all agree that Zach and Lane's romantic relationship was a mistake. It would've been better for all of us if they just stayed bandmembers. One thing I resent about the show is that everyone has to have a relationship, I mean, we had all that from Lorelai and Rory, so why not make Lane a career driven character, not only because it would've been different but also because it is an unusual career itself. It would have been far more interesting than that terribly pregnancy plotline.
I wonder if maybe the writers didn't want any characters to be "abandoned" or "left behind" so to speak. Perhaps they thought fans would judge the show for not giving the best friend a guy. Although I guess Rory did end up single at the end of the series.
I like Gil. He's super cool! I like the band because I interpret them as an example of when inter-band politics can go wrong if you don't have at least one musician who's level-headed, mature, and nuanced.
I don’t think the band failed. I just think we didn’t see them play in a venue so we don’t know what they are doing professionally and that’s important. But this is a band that has been together for over a decade. That’s more that just a hobby or garage band. They’re just working artists with day jobs and families who haven’t achieved the big time. It’s very realistic for working artists, including very skilled ones.

I agree, Sebastian Bach is soooo beautiful! Haha, I love him and Skid Row. Easily one of the best voices in rock n roll, probably one of the best ever. Gil was my favorite on my first watch but I didn't realize at the time who played him. I'm sure I'll have even more fun when I do a re-watch! I'm hoping to like Zach more too actually. He was fine for the most part but he was annoying pretty often and I thought the writers really did Lane dirty by pairing them together. While I can forgive that, the fact that they wrote her to be pregnant so soon and to not have any sort of career in music was so disheartening. I'd love to see her as a studio musician, teaching music, or even just running a record store. She she had to put up with this super strict lifestyle and put on a front to appease her mom for so long, and then finally when Mrs. Kim chooses to just love and accept her daughter as she is, Lane still ends up getting stuck in way.
Maybe Lane was meant to be a foil for Rory, and that's why Lane could never leave Stars Hollow.

The saga of Hep Alien is an honest depiction of how childhood dreams very rarely survive adulthood.
But would it survive Gil's inevitable bout with obesity, and one band member's hospitalization due to an overdose of cracker jacks?
Idk why people think it's odd that Hep Alien stayed in the garage phase. That's the norm. The arts are HIGHLY competitive. It doesn't matter how good you are; without a heavy dose of luck, it won't happen. Also, they worried too much about their image and didn't advertise much. Sure, they had one tour that Lane's mother got them, but without her, they never would have left Stars Hollow. They needed a manager who understands the business. They didn't have a manager at all. A good manager and a heavy dose of humble pie would have made them more seen and more marketable.
I can understand Zack as a character cause I’ve been there. Now I of course haven’t done the same things he has done but I can understand him as a character because I’m in a band and often don’t like some of the ideas my band mates come up with because I’m not a fan of change. However that is something I’m working on. Zack is a control freak and when he isn’t in control he screws up. Part of the reason I like him because he is realistic in that sense. He makes mistakes however his big mistake was really out of character.
The show did lane so bad… i mean really all se got out of life was being a mom. The only asian youngster in the main cast and she just gets pregnant. 🤢🤮
Help Alien was never good enough to become famous. at least not good enough for them to make a living off of it. least of all with Zack as lead singer. That being said, the band should have been used as a stepping stone for Lane to work towards getting a career in music. she could have a music maneger, or radio host, or a talent scout.

You know, I was invested in Lane's story when Dave was on the show. And when I say "invested", I mean to say that I'd be into it when the show gave her moments during the show.
When Adam Brody left the show they botched it; I simply never bought the reason they gave. That level of botched-writing extends to Lane, where you can see them stumbling to try and reorient what to do with her. I'd have preferred they cast an entirely new person as an entirely new love interest instead of Zach. It reached the point where I'd mentally zone out a bit during Lane's portions on the show.

the label showcase episode where Zach acts so awful is a reference to the documentary 'dig' about the rivalry between the two bands Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols. I think he is supposed to be acting as arrogantly as the front men of those bands (Joel - the new member Zach invites - is the real tambourine player from BJTM, who is also in the same documentary).

Lauren is absolutely stunning. I don't mean to imply that she is not gorgeous. Once you hit this level of beauty, the question of who is the most beautiful becomes a matter of preference.

The older I get, the less I like Luke, Zach and Jess. They are rude, angry, selfish, violent men who will occasionally do something sweet for the women who put up with their nonsense. In real life, there’s nothing cute or fun about living with these guys.
